This a stitch-a-day calendar. Every day is a new stitch. I'm expanding my knowledge of crocheting and found this calendar very helpful.
Lovely book. Plenty of crochet stitches to keep you busy whether you are a beginner or intermediate crocheter. There's lots for everyone
Thank you Globe Pequot, Stackpole Books, and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this wonderful book. I really enjoyed this Crocheting Calendar with plethora of stitches from easy to more complex. Grouped by months of the year, each set includes clear directions and a small picture of the pattern. This is a great gift for any crafter!
I love the idea behind this. Sometimes, you can get up in what project to do next or just lose a bit of move for the craft. But the idea of a stitch a day is great because it keeps things fresh and interesting.
I've tried a few of the simpler stitches to see if the instructions were easy to follow, etc, and I didn't do too bad.
I would say, though, if you're fresh out the gate beginner, then you might find following the instructions a tad difficult as they are written with patterned abrieviations.
This would be a lovely christmas/birthday present
I don’t know if it was the format of the Ebook that I was kindly given but it was incredibly confusing. The patterns ran together and weren’t very well spaced out. Without reading the patterns, it was difficult to work out which pictures went together. I tested 3 of the patterns; Jan 1, Jan 8, and Feb 2 - all of which were successful and looked like their picture. However, the formatting was shocking and I wouldn’t recommend this version of the book to other crocheters. Some of the patters were beautiful and obviously a lot of time had gone in to making and writing these patterns - it is unfortunate that some were squashed together.
Good variation in stitches. One type for each day is excellent. Personally I would have liked it not to be sorted by ‘theme’ per month as it is one per day, so each month can end up being a bit boring. Some of the picture with pale yarn was not so easy to see, but most of the stitches used lovely vibrant colours, so just a minor point. There was also no schematics. But overall really good. these are all minor comments.
As an avid crocheter, I am always on the look out for new patterns. With this, I found a plethora of patterns to enjoy. The directions are simple/easy to read and the pictures are fantastic. I have picked one and am currently making a baby blanket as a gift for a relative. i know that I will use many more of the patterns.
Many thanks to Net Galley and Stackpole Books for providing me with an ARC of this book.
I'm reviewing both these stitch guides together because they will be published simultaneously by the same publisher. Like the popular stitch a day page a day calendars, these books present 365 different stitches for the crafter seeking more options for their own designs. Nicely illustrated with color photos, neatly presented instructions, with some patterns at the end as well as general crocheting and knitting information. I didn't test any of the patterns, but I read through quite a few and tried to match them to the photos, to see if I saw any errors, and didn't find any on the days I spot checked. These would be perfect gifts for the crafter in your life.
This is a great way to try out some new stitches and expand your crochet skills. What I love most are the new techniques. Secondly I love that this calendar isn’t tied to a specific year and you can use it over and over, or even pass it on to a friend when you’re done. A great gift for your crocheting friends!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
5 star review!
Love the premise of this book, I am a beginner learning crochet so it has been perfect for learning new stitches and techniques.
A Year of Crochet Stitches-Desk Calendar
3.5 Stars
I've been crocheting for years and this book (calendar) caught my attention. I was looking forward to finding a new pattern to work on.
This standing desk flip calendar showcases a new stitch pattern each day.
A Year of Crochet Stitches is structured where it starts with the basics, and naturally moves up from there. Though I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners, it is more for intermediate crocheters. There isn't a basic page identifying the names of the stitches used in each pattern like a beginner's book would.
I've found most creative people are visual learners. So, this book threw me through a loop. It failed to wow me visually. I would have loved to see seasonal colors, to match the month. Or a vibrant, fun and interesting type of yarn to hold my attention. The photography is raw; it is not photoshopped to make it easier to see clearly. So the dark, rich colors standout and it is easier to make out the pattern. However, pastel, or pale-colored yarn does not show up, nor did it picture well.
Overall, I enjoyed the variety of patterns in this book, but I didn't like the color choices made throughout. This standing desk flip calendar showcases a new stitch pattern each day.
Thank you, NetGalley and globe Pequot, for an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Like the author, Jill Wright, I was taught crochet as a young girl by my grannies. Unlike Jill, I haven’t kept up the skill and I asked for a review copy of A Year of Crochet Stitches hoping to rediscover the joy of crochet and indeed extend my skills.
The collection is in the form of a perpetual calendar, which each day introduces a new crochet design. For each there’s a photograph of a completed sample, together with instructions to complete that design. And there’s a BONUS! This perpetual calendar also includes 29th February, so it even works in leap years. The designs are handily grouped according to the style of the stitches used, including simple stitches, bobbles and puffs, shells and clusters, mesh, and motifs that can be joined to create larger pieces. Finally there are various edgings and borders that could be used to finish off.
Although the first designs are simpler than the later ones, I would say that the calendar is not aimed at the complete beginner. A knowledge of basic stitches is assumed, and an understanding of crochet pattern notation is essential. The instructions get more complex as the months progress. That said, there is a handy list of abbreviations at the end. I consider myself a rusty beginner and I would need to remind myself of the basics before applying yarn to hook in order to decipher the instructions.
The author includes essential tips and tricks to ensure your finished work is successful. She encourages experimentation and I feel sure that by the time you’ve mastered all the stitches up to October and beyond you would feel confident to do just that.
My only criticism would be that photographs illustrating the finished samples that have been worked using paler yarns haven’t photographed as well as the darker yarns, making it hard to see what you’re aiming at.
This calendar would certainly lead to a year or more of daily creative activity and I recommend it to anyone wanting to enhance their crocheting repertoire.
A good variety if crochet stitches, collected by stitch varioation. Starting with simple stitches and then moving on to bobbles & puffs, shells & clusters, post stitches & cables, motifs, shells & V stitches, mesh, filet, columns and zig zag to name a few. There are 366 stitches in all with some garment patterns at the end of the book. A good book for anyone learning to crochet and also for a designer. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DRC
Great book. I love crochet and everything about it, it relaxes me and keeps my hands busy. This book is amazing full Of beautiful stitches and patterns
This book contains a great range of different stitches, including motifs and borders. It is well organised by category, which makes it easier to find particular stitches. Some of the photographs of the finished stitches weren't very clear, but that might have been due to the watermark on the available version on Netgalley.
This is a great book for a crochter. Has very detailed instructions with clear pictures of what the stitch is. There are lots and lots of lace crochet stitches, inspiration galore.. My only gripe is there are no names associated with what the stitch is usually called. Myself I usually steer away from the open lace stitches in crochet. I basically use stitches for blankets and do not want open stitches. There is also border stitch suggestions with instructions. At the end are just a few actual projects.
Overall if you are a crocheter that likes to make shawls or lacy items it is a great resource.
I love the format of this (assuming it will be in calendar, tear-off-page format) so I can keep single pages wherever I want. I also like how each month has a theme so I can quickly access the type of stitch I'm interested in. The yarn colors aren't very appealing and the light-colored variegated yarns make it more difficult to see the stitch patterns. The photography could be improved in some instances by zooming out in some cases to give a better idea of how the stitch pattern looks.
Great stitches! I do wish that the names of the stitches were given, both so you could talk about them so the other crocheters, but Aldo look up video tutorials if you would need them.
The books is structured in a nice way, starting with the basics and moving up from that. I would probably recommend it to some friends
I found this to be a perfectly acceptable crochet book. I wouldn't recommend if for super beginners but maybe for beginner-to-intermediate crocheters. There's a quick description of how to complete the stitch and then an examaple. I think this would be acute think to work on as maybe a temperature blanket of some sort. Could easily due a different stitch each day corresponding to the temperature. There were a few stithces I think would be fun to try. I think I would have liked names included with the stiches, but I don't think 365 stiches realistically all have names.
I received this book as a free e-book in exchange for an honest opinion.
This is such a cute book that would keep you wanting to try new stitches! I love finding new patterns and this book would help you as there is a new one every single day. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning new patterns or who is new to it and would like to learn new ones!
