This calendar is an extensive catalogue of crochet stitches. It has clear instructions to follow and I liked the photographs of a swatch of the stitch. I would have liked to know the names of the stitches but other than that, a really great resource.
What an interesting book of ideas very different to other crochet books on the market. I love all the different stitches to try out. It’s well written and easy to follow which is great as to many are hard to follow, I’d definitely recommend this book and buy myself
A Year of Crochet Stitches: A Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar

There really is 365 stitches in this book. The stitches are grouped into categories and each month you will tackle a new category. The stitch is well explained. There is an index explaining what different terms mean. I do not crochet often and usually have to reteach myself every time I pick up my crochet hook and thread. This book will make a great gift for any crocheter regardless of their experience.
As a beginner crocheter, I find this calendar slightly confusing, but by the end I am hoping to full understand. I know most(all!?) crochet patterns have shorthand or abbreviations for everything but I still struggle with them. I love that there is a reference guide at the end with the abbreviations and also the different yarn weights and fiber content. The few "recipes" at the end are a fun addition too!
I also absolutely love the variety of stiches and the idea of doing a new one each day for practice. The pictures are bright and colorful. It is great planning to start with the basic/easy stitches and work up to the hard ones. I've scrolled to look at all the stitches in the calendar and those in December look beautiful but difficult!
Thank you NetGalley, Globe Pequot and Creator Jill Wright for this fun ARC.
This is an excellent collection of crochet stitches for those of us who enjoy making up our own patterns or just want something different and all our own. In this collection, stitches are nicely organized by type of stitch (e.g. all kinds of bobble stitches). Perfect for the intermediate and advanced crocheter and an excellent gift idea.
Thanks NetGalley, Globe Pequot, and Stackpole Books for this fantastic arc!
4.5/5 stars rounded up!
I'm not a very strong crocheter yet, and this book will be absolutely invaluable to my knitting and crochet library! The images of the patterns are very clear, and the instructions very easy to follow. I just really wish it included the stitch names, as while I'm learning each new thing it would be nice to know what one I'm doing, not only just to know but also so I can find patterns that feature that specific stitch on them, as there are already a few I'd love to make hats and scarves out of! Otherwise, this is really fantastic!
I love this! Being a new crocheter myself, I don't know many stitches so this is so helpful! I loved learning about all the possibilities.
The idea is great, and many patterns here are great. There are a lot of beautiful stitches there.
Some are new to me, some are good old friends. it is a one pattern a day calendar - date is marked but the day of the week is not, so it will work for any year.
But I really do not like the photo quality - in many samples you cannot see clearly what is going on. Sure, the yarns are pretty, but many of them have poor stitch definition, are too fuzzy of have no contrast against the background, so I am not sure why they were chosen, really. Like January 5 and 6 - it is a wall of yarn, and I cannot see what is going on without having to read the pattern and trying a sample myself, but this is not what one expect from a stitch dictionary. Some of the pattern samples are better - mostly the ones with open work. I understand that making all the samples was a huge undertaking, but why not choose a good and appropriate yarns for it so the result would be worth the effort?
The patterns do not have charts, it is all only written down, sadly. They do explain some of the stitches and abbreviations used, but no pictures. There are pattern recipes for a shawl and a cowl at the end of the book.
Pros: I taught myself to crochet a few years ago and still consider myself very much a beginner. I love books like this that help me learn more about crochet and inspire me to try new stitches. This really is a stitch-a-day book with a new stitch for each day of the year! I appreciated that each page had a photo of what the stitched pattern should look like. I also liked how each month had a theme.
Cons: As a beginner, I still struggle with the patterns and abbreviations used in them, so I found this book not to be very beginner friendly (even though there is a glossary of abbreviations at the back of the book). That's not a bad thing! I think it's important for readers to know if the book is for them, and this is a great book for more experienced crocheters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Globe Pequot, Stackpole Books for the opportunity to read this book.
This book is perfect if you are in a rut and not sure what to do. I love that every day has a different stitch. I will say as a beginner, some definitely seem a bit out of my comfort zone. But this is a book I can tell I will continue to go back and pick up. The directions are easily labled, pages aren’t riddled with unnecessary things to distract you. I do with that there was more than one photo as example.
A Year of Crochet Stitches : A Stitch-a-Day Perpetual Calendar is a lovely collection of 365 different stitches complete with a coloured photograph and very clear step by step instructions. I love the concept and browsing through the book, but the stitches don't have names so its difficult to identify your favourites (apart from naming them by date). I wouldn't pick it up and have a go everyday but I would look for the patterns I like visually. Overall a good book.
Whilst I’ve not read this cover to cover (for obvious reasons), I’ve had a go at a few in the piece I’m working on. The instructions are easy to follow and I love that the instructions include a stitch count (e.g. multi of 4 stitches + 4), so dropping them into a pattern is easy. There are stitches and also edges/trims. The only thing I don’t like, only a minor point, is that they aren’t named (e.g. bubble stitch) which would make it easier when writing a pattern. I read an e-copy, but think this book would be easier to use as a paper copy. I’d recommend this book to anyone who loves to crochet and make their own patterns.
Thanks to Netgalley and Globe Pequot, Stackpole Books for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This book is a golden mine of stitches ! With the multiples given, it's so easy to plan out what I could do. If I wanted to do a scarf or a blanket, it would be so easy. Only improvement would be to have the names of each stitches.
While a cool concept, I do think they overreached with this one. 365 stitches is a lot, and when many of them are well-known stitches, I did wish that each one had the stitch name. I'm sure they had to create some stitches for the book and maybe the reason they didn't include names was because of this, but it wasn't very fun to look at the stitch instructions and try to figure out whether January 1st was one I knew or not (moss stitch, for those in the know ;^))
A cool idea, and maybe something I'll come back to if I'm trying to decide on a stitch for a blanket, but not something I feel the need to purchase for my personal collection. The only thing I can really think of that would be cool for this book is somehow finding a way to do a temperature blanket dealio with each day's stitches, but that would be difficult when each stitch requires different numbers of multiples.
What a great idea this is! I absolutely love this perpetual calendar of crochet stitches! Each month has a different theme, and each day of the month has a color photo of the stitch pattern for that day. The day has instructions for that stitch pattern. The instructions are clear and straightforward, and most are complete on the day's page. There are a few that run to the next page, but those are rare. I am really enjoying this "sampler" of all kinds of different textures and patterns. It's great practice between projects, and many of the days' stitch patterns will inspire the creative crochet-lover to make new projects featuring those patters. The end of the book also includes a glossary of abbreviations used in the daily instructions. There is also a guide to blocking your work, and some advice on how you could use the individual blocks or motifs you created as you worked through the days. There are even a couple bonus project patterns that allow you to use what you learned to create something beautiful. I really like that this is undated (from a year perspective), so you could really dive in whenever you want to start working with it. Or you could revisit year after year. I'm a bit rusty and am looking to rebuild my crochet skills--this is perfect for that, starting with more basic stitches in January and building in complexity as the year goes on. I am really enjoying A Year of Crochet Stitches. Each month's theme is fun and helps you build new skills to add to your repertoire. For example, in April, we work on ripples and zig zag patterns. In August, the focus is Motifs, stitched in the round. In November, we get into working with different colors. I think there is a lot here to entertain any crochet lover. This would be make a great gift!
