Cale Casey moved to Hawaii to sell luxury real estate to get away from the haunts of his past. His brother Ambrose stayed home and built up a construction company. Nearly 30 years ago, Ambrose and Cale buried a secret in the local pond. Now a development company is planning to drain it, and the secret may be found out.

This was a beautifully written, haunting novella with well written characters. I loved how each of the characters were deeply connected by the past.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me this free arc. All opinions are my own. This book was not for me. I had a hard time getting into it and it just never picked up for me. Thank you for the opportunity to read it.

Blew through this novel in a day. Solid characters. Beautiful writing. Heartfelt. This is the story of two brothers, Caleb "Cale" and Ambrose "Am", now adults but haunted by a sudden act of violence with tragic consequences from their youth. It's also the story of Lily, who'd grown up somewhat tangentially to the brothers and is darkened by her own tragedy from the past. It is the story of how these character's lives collide in the here and now, how the darkness of the past allowed little light into their lives, and how they deal with those past traumas. The flashpoint of this reckoning is news that a local river will be dredged for a shiny new construction project. Terrible news for the brothers because the past can never truly be buried, and with that dredging literal skeletons from their childhood are sure to resurface. Their lives forever changed. Highly, highly recommended!
