What can I say? Minka Kent does it again; another great book! This was an interesting tale of friendship with twists and turns throughout. This was the perfect example of "you think you might know... but you dont". Well done Ms Kent, well done.
Thank you to Minka Kent, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of After Dark for me to read and review. What a twisty, dark, compelling read. After Dark was filled with so many unique and interesting details that kept the reader guessing and actually led the reader down some misleading avenues all the way through most of the book. I definitely fell for some of those red herrings hook, line, and sinker at least in the beginning. The conclusion of the story definitely was unexpected in ways, but once you got part way through the book, certain parts became a bit predictable. It was still very enjoyable since even the parts that I managed to predict played out in unexpected ways. I definitely recommend After Dark to all thriller readers!
Huge fan of Minka Kent but After Dark was just not the book for me. I have grown quite tired of the unreliable female narrative (no matter the reason!) so I was disappointed with this storyline. Nevertheless, looking forward to her next book!
Thank you so much to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was so thrilled to read this! I love #MinkaKent & this twisted #psychologicalsuspense kept me reading. It’s full of entertaining suspense that I’ve come to love from Kent.
Thank you, Minka Kent, Thomas & Mercer, Amazonpublishing, & netgalley for my copy! All opinions are my own.
ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
I liked the premise of this story and it was very well written! Unfortunately for me, I saw the main twist coming a mile away. There were some parts that caught me by surprise but overall it was just a really fun ride. I liked how the suspense was set up and it definitely has multiple unreliable narrators! If you like psychological thrillers, be sure to check this book out!
Minka Kent has been one of my favourite new authors in the suspense/ thriller genre
So I was so excited to read it and it did not disappoint, from the first page you are swept into the world of Afton and Sydney
Childhood best friends each chapter is told from their differing perspectives, along with flashbacks that eventually reveals the betrayal. This is a story that explores mental health and the ties that bind us to people. This was such a quick read because I literally read this book in one setting. If I had to say the one thing I wish Minka Kent had elaborated on was the relationship between Sydney and her mother. This was another brilliantly told story
4 stars
After Dark is a good novel by Minka Kent. I don't think this was her best work, but it was still entertaining and suspenseful. It was a quick read, somewhat predictable, but still good.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Man, first scene has some blood in it and amnesia. We started this novel cooking with fire 🔥. This was so fast paced, and relatively short too! I blew through this in a day. I felt the characters were complex and had strong stories, past and present. The twist was great, I wasn’t expecting it at all! This was my first Minka Kent novel and it won’t be my last!
This one was just ok for me. I liked it but didn’t love it. I didn’t see the twist coming so that was a plus! Easy quick read so I’d still recommend.
Afton lives in small town USA. She’s had a hard life and lives with her Gran. She has but one friend in the world and works the night shift at a hotel. She’s grateful for all of this because she should be in jail for killing her friend’s Dad. The thing is, she doesn’t remember any of it. She is a pariah in her own town. How can her friend remain a friend after all of that? Thanks to NetGalley for the read.
Thank you Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to enjoy After Dark in exchange for an honest review. Minka Kent, quickly becoming one of my must read authors, once again has written a smart and entertaining work, having me emotionally connected to the killer. The messily woven together characters are brilliantly written, giving a nod to the difficulites of living in a small town. Can anyone ever go back to a normal life after being found guilty of murder? A murder you have no recollection of commiting... But who is telling the truth? What is real? And what do you do when you can't trust anyone?
This book is about two best friends and one of them killed the others father… or did they? Chapters alternate between the friends and past and present. Everything isn’t as it seems. This book held my attention and I couldn’t wait to figure out what was happening. Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.
This book was a bit of a slow start, but I kept going and finally got to an interesting twist that redeemed the book. It deals with some heavy issues so be aware of that. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Ashton is stuck, living in a small town where many years ago she was found with a knife in her hands, supposedly murdering her best friend’s father. Her best friend forgives her but as they grow older there is something suspicious about the death that makes Ashton begin to investigate what really happened that night. This another winner for Kent, and it’s a quick read.
The storyline of this book hooked me. I was so invested. I needed to find out how things would play out. I must say I was disappointed with the reveal. Lackluster, to say the least, Overall, just okay.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the E-ARC

I loved the premise and plot of this book. Great thriller, I loved getting to know the characters. I couldn’t figure out which character to believe and there was a twist I was surprised about. This had toxic relationships, and mental health battles in it. Thank you to NetGalley abd the publisher for allowing me to read this one.
Afton Teachout is a bit of a mess. Still living in the same small town where, years ago, she was accused of killing her mother's lover during a fit of rage, Afton is an outcast. Living with her aging grandmother and working overnight shifts at a local hotel, her life is pretty boring....until her best friend's husband checks into the hotel with another woman.
I was very torn about this book. Right from the start I found the names to be really distracting for some reason. For example Afton is an interesting name but then she mom's name is Vangie, again, ok, cool, but their last name is Teachout and for whatever reason Afton Teachout and Vangie Teachout just seemed a little out there. Also, in the beginning (and in the book description) it seemed like a book about Afton exposing her best friend's husband and it kind of was but the whole thing dragged and struggled to get into it until almost 60% through when a big twist shocked me. I flew through the rest of the book (the other twist was pretty obvious from the get go) and ended up really enjoying it, but it took me a lot longer to get through the first half than it usually does with this author.
While I do think the book was a bit tough to get into, my first thought after the twist was 'Wow I hope this gets made into a Netflix movie'. It's hard to explain without spoilers, but the twist in this book would allow for a really awesome mind-bender (that's not the word I want to use but you get it :) and I think it would capture a huge audience.
Minka Kent does it again!! The story kept me engaged the entire time and I didn’t anticipate many of the twists that kept on coming. Will highly recommend reading this fast-paced exciting thriller.
. Thank you to NetGalley for this arc
Afton is trying to escape the stigma of her past. When she was in high school, circumstances implied she had committed a murder but she had no memory of the event. Without adequate proof, she was released but the people of her town never forgot and have never let her forget.
Now as an adult, Afton is trying to take care of her beloved grandmother and her best friend, Sydney. There are strange events happening that Afton is trying to make sense of. And she's pretty sure Sydney's husband may be having an affair but she doesn't seem to believe her. She feels cast adrift and out of sorts but can't figure out why.
This is a well done psychological thriller with a nicely devised plot. The characters were well-crafted and it all came together in a way that was seamless.
