When you start The Buried Hours, you're going to want to make sure that you have the next couple of hours blocked off interruption free. I guarantee that you won't be able to put this one down until you finish it. It's that good!
The Buried Hours is a suspense-driven story that makes it impossible to put down. It is dark and intense. Every scene is emotionally fraught with fear and nervous energy as Signe tries to project the image of a confident and outgoing investigative journalist whilst simultaneously living a nightmare. The following through on threats to kill the people she cares about if she tells anyone what happened to her during her abduction two years previously has kept her isolated and looking over her shoulder.
There were a lot of twists and turns in this book with a few that completely took me by surprise. It wasn't easy to know who Signe could trust. I was hoping Cole would be the one person she could confide in but there were plenty of reasons to mistrust him too.
The storyline of Signe's ordeal during her abduction is disturbing and terrifying. I thought all of those involved got done away with a little bit too easily in the end. I would have liked to see the main culprits really suffer at least half as much as what Signe had.
This was a great read and I will enjoy reading more by the author.
Twists & Turns and Edge-of-Your-Seat Excitement!!
Brilliant Story! Signe Gates has lost a brutal 48 hours of her life. The aftermath left both physical and emotional damage. Video sent to her fills in some gaps, but if she tells anyone they will die. She makes her living interviewing the worst of the worst, and one has turned on her in the worst possible way. More painful, her husband /producer walks away even seeing the physical evidence.
Two years later a text comes in offering answers to her questions. She must hike into Yosemite to get them. A complex web of lies, betrayal and the more she learns the more she does not know who she can trust, if anyone.
You will feel the weight of the pack, the change of elevation, the confusion at seeing people where they should not be. Will keep you completely engrossed until the final page.
Oh, the suspense, emotions, twists, and turns kept me glued to this dark and gritty story until the end. The author is new to me, I love her writing style and I will be looking for her past and future books.
Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for access to this arc.
The Buried Hours by R.S. Grant starts with a traumatic sequence of events. Signe Gates has been living a nightmare for two years haunted by 48 hours that she can not remember except for seeing the bruises and scars. She does not know who is behind it but they seem to know her every move.
Signe is told to investigate two deaths in Yosemite Park and that it is linked to her past. She needs to be there in two days and needs a guide.
Who can she trust?
This book truly lives up to the thriller genre. It was hard to put down. Will definitely look for more books by this author.
5++ Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ THE BURIED HOURS is a thrilling and compelling journey so full of twists and turns that you will be held captive until the very end. Throughout this intriguing and suspenseful trip, the events of the past are slowly revealed, giving you hints and clues along the way. As each new truth is exposed, some surprising, some not so, the doubts Signe experiences keep surfacing. When the final shocking truths are revealed, Signe will have to dig deep within to find the strength to follow the right path. Hers is a difficult trek through a forest of intrigues and suspense that will keep you thoroughly enthralled from start to finish. There are some very intense and possibly triggering scenes that may make parts of this tale very troubling to read. But IMO, it’s well worth all the emotions it evokes.
This was a well written suspense thriller (I don't know if I would call it a 'romantic' one because while the MCs are attracted to each other, the romantic angle isn't really the focus of the story). It's action packed and the plot moves at a brisk pace.
The book addresses some dark subject matter and serious topics, so readers should be prepared for the author to, you know, write about dark subject matter and serious topics. If you are looking for light escapist fare, this might not be the choice for you.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
What a story! I am completely blown away. Grant has written something that will completely capture you and immerse you into a world that will shock and thrill you. The twists and turns will have you guessing until the very last second who you can actually trust and what is going to happen. Signe, what can I even say that will give her justice? She is a force to be reckoned with and is one of the strongest heriones I've ever read. I enjoyed every suspenseful second of reading this book and I can not say enough good things about it! Incredible!
This was another title I couldn't resist adding to my shelves after reading the blurb, because I do love a good thriller with a survival/wilderness angle. The main character Signe's background also had me fully intrigued, and I've been looking forward to dive into this story partly set in Yosemite. I'm happy to announce that I most definitely hit the jackpot here, and I ended up having an absolute blast with The Buried Hours! Dark, shocking, gritty and simply impossible to put down: this thriller means business indeed.
There is a lot to unpack in The Buried Hours, but I've decided to keep this review on the short side to avoid spoilers. Trust me, this story will have even more impact if you don't exactly know what is coming! What I can say is that Yosemite plays a key role in the plot, and the descriptions of the park and the hike were both thorough and vivid. Add the suspense and things happening along the way, and I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole time. Oh yes, the wilderness/survival angle most definitely hit the mark for me!
The plot switches between Signe and Cole, and it's a great way to both add more suspense and give more insight into their characters and their growing connection. Both characters were quite easy to warm up to, although the whole mystery around Cole does make you doubt his true intentions. Signe is a complicated and without doubt flawed character, but the fact that she doesn't give up and is determined to discover the truth shows her resilience. It makes you root for her almost straight away, although certain actions also make you want to shake her to make her see sense... Either way, I was invested in her story until the very end.
Like I said before, there is a lot to unpack in The Buried Hours, and there are a lot of different subplots, twists and secrets to be revealed along the way. This story doesn't shy away from heavy topics or graphic scenes, so it might not be the best book if you have a weak stomach... If you don't mind your thrillers on the dark and twisted side, you will fully appreciate this wild and exhilarating ride though. The plot twists themselves were mainly successful, and there were a couple that hit me completely out of the blue. What I also didn't expect was the romance, and the sexy scenes were a bit too much for me, but I loved the rest of the story too much to be truly bothered by them.
There is a lot to love in The Buried Hours, and I ended up reading most of the book in one sitting. Once you get a glimpse of the full scope of this story, it will be hard to stop reading, that's for sure! I definitely want to read more of this author now.
Her writing using a pen name, gives us a plot that is darker and grittier than her other books.
Still having mystery, secrets, lies with a touch of romance.
Signe.is a crime reporter, she never pays for these interviews with leaders and the cartels.
A text message to come to the back country of Yosemite Park, her nightmare of those
lost hours was connected to these two deaths, for answers.
Nothing was the same now, she survived, but who to trust, feeling not even herself.
What I liked was the strength Signe showed, her determination to get answers.
A great story to open this new series, once one starts wanting to finish.
Given arc by Net Galley and Thomas & Mercer for my voluntary review
Another great book by R.S. Grant. This will absolutely keep you reading. Plot twists and complicated characters will continue to surprise the reader. Signe is trying to uncover the truth behind her missing hours and does not know who to trust or who is behind the strange clues. Dark and serious crimes are alluded to and Signe faces them all head on. Beautiful setting in a national park is a plus.
There were so many twists and turns, I almost lost track. Sometimes I got frustrated that I couldn't keep up with who was good, who was bad, and all the changes taking place in the understanding of the buried hours. Overall, a good read.
Absolutely love this story! It may be an R.S. Grant first in series and a new style, but you can’t mistake Rachel Grant’s signature brilliant story-telling, meticulously researched settings and world, and relatable characters and dialogue. One of my favorite zingers is Cole’s simple but effective reply when Signe questions how he gets his information: “I do my homework and eat my vegetables.” Of course, there’s nothing simple about Cole or Signe or the obstacles they face. Signe is a fabulous mix of strength and vulnerability. Hers is a tale of struggle and survival wrapped in a mystery you can’t put down.
In a world of documentaries it isn’t all about cute animals or a dying planet, sometimes it’s about the criminal underworld and its operators. Signe is a documentary filmmaker, using sources she keeps hidden for vital information and privacy. One evening, two years prior, her world flipped upside down and she is determined to find the people responsible. She doesn’t know who to trust when she’s sent on a mission to Yosemite, told she’d find answers. I was captivated by Signe’s story and how strong she can be in the face of killers. Grant has written amazing books with strong female leads and twisty storylines. If you enjoy mysteries, thrillers, or even nature and the outdoors, this is for you. I got to read an early copy and am excited to leave my voluntary review.
Several of my favorite Romantic-Suspense authors have forsaken the genre to write just Suspense or Mystery books. I'm not a happy reader about this turn of events. I really like a good Romance to go with the Suspense. At least Rachel Grant has used a pen name, so you know going in that you are getting something different. This work is darker, grittier and rough to take in spots than anything Grant has previously written. This is a mystery/suspense with a touch of romance. I wasn't at all sure about Signe's relationship with Cole. I sure didn't trust him, and I could see why she didn't. I loved the Yosemite scenes, even the grueling hike to the site for a meet. Shades of my younger days. Signe's home in Redondo Beach is also close to my heart. Sitting on the Esplanade looking at the ocean is my favorite place in the world.
Signe Garts is a very successful crime journalist with her own docuseries about criminals and the criminal mind. She is just starting to put her life back together after she was kidnapped, drugged and brutalized losing 48-hours of her life with bruises and scars on her body and soul. And, losing the trust of the man she loved.
When an informant contacts her with a clue to what happened to her during those missing 48-hours and a lead to the disappearance of two men in Yosemite, there is no way she isn't going to make that meet. Desperately needing to find a guide and cameraman, Signe contacts the one man she would rather not get involved, her ex-husband Leo Starr. Leo arranges for the new star of his latest docuseries, Cole Brenner, to accompany her. Cole is uniquely qualified as he has an archeological background in Yosemite and backpacking experience. Cole also has his own secrets and reasons for going with Signe.
What they find in the backcountry of Yosemite is danger, murder and few answers. But it just makes Signe more determined to find the person behind her kidnapping and bring them to justice.
Possible triggers: rape and human trafficking.
4 1/2-Stars
My thanks to the Publisher and the Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
This book had so many twists and turns. This book put the reader right on the trail in Yosemite with this dark thriller, and it’s a journey that will keep you reading all night. I loved this book! #netgalley #theburiedhours
This book is so good! If you like suspense, mystery, intrigue, secrets, and lies you will love this book. I can’t imagine a little thing like Signe interviewing leaders of various cartels and not being so afraid that she couldn’t do it. I am sure it helped that her husband was her cameraman for awhile so she felt safe with him. That is until something so heinous happened to her that her world turned upside down, and her husband no longer supported her and asked for a divorce.
After two years of self crimination, Signe was contacted regarding a story and she felt like she could find out what happened to her where she lost 48 hours of her life. She didn’t know what to think. Her cameraman was hurt and her ex husband sent Cole to help her out as a guide and cameraman. I can understand Signe being confused as why he sent Cole to help her as her ex had not said good things about him. I was with Signe trying to determine who was truthful, who was helping her, and who was trying to hurt her. I was so surprised when everything came out at the end. This is a book you will not want to put down once you start reading. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
A awesome book filled with all kinds of switchbacks. The details are amazing, but I must admit I got a little lost at first, but did pick it up quickly with all the details about the national park. Great in-depth characters with Signe and Cole, loved that surprise character half way through and how they connected in the end. Talk about a devious villain! Thoroughly enjoyed this story of intrigue. Definitely recommend.

Wow! What a thriller! The Buried Hours by R.S. Grant is one impossible to put-down book. I know I was still reading at 2:00AM after repeatedly telling myself only one more chapter.
The book begins not too many weeks after Signe Gates’s traumatic kidnapping that totally changed her life. Then skips to two years later when it looks as if she might find some answers to those 48 hours. The search leads her first to Yosemite National Park with a hiking guide. Sagne is unsure of who to trust and rightly so. Everyone has a personal agenda with her at the center. Do not overlook any fact or person as you read, because you will be trying to find all the answers right along with Signe. Do not overlook any fact or person as you read, because you will be trying to find all the answers right along with Signe. Like her until you see into the mind of some of the other characters, trust no one.
Breath stealing, psychological thriller and action filled suspense this is one incredible read. Everything and I mean everything comes together by the end. It evens ends with Signe sitting in the same place that it begins, a circle story I love that. Not many writers can pull that off, R. S. Grant is a master story crafter. This story just blew me away.
An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Buried Hours is the 1st book Rachel Grant has written under this new pen name, but of course she brings her brilliant storytelling to the table and takes us on quite a rough ride. A thriller with just a touch of romantic suspense, the story is gripping, adrenaline-inducing and once you start, you won't want to stop reading until reaching the end. Signe is a wonderful heroine: strong-willed, compassionate, determined. And she's the only one we can be sure to be on the 'good' side from the start. Every other character's motives was being thrown into doubt, leaving me wondering until the very last who she could trust. Dealing with tough subject matters, there is more than one happy ending to the book. A definite additon to my keeper shelf and highly recommended!
R.S Grant delivers tense, palpable danger at every turn and this book had me on edge throughout. Signe is battered, traumatized and damaged beyond what most would survive. The people in her orbit are all suspect as is Cole - from their first meeting and throughout this book. When Signe slowly realizes that she was victimized by those closest to her, she is left unable to trust her memory, her judgement and herself and in doing so, puts herself in even more danger. Not only do readers get two excellently written main characters in Signe and Cole, but the writing is so good that keeping a collection of equally intriguing background characters all straight is no issue. Outstanding book with a wonderfully satisfying conclusion. I loved every heart-stopping minute of it and highly recommend!
