Ezekiola lives on planet Circa. There he attends classes and prepares for his graduation, when he will be given a colored belt and begin the more specialized lessons for his chosen field. As he is gifted with mind reading abilities, he knows that a blue belt is in his future. However, everyone is shocked when Ezekiola is given an emerald belt, the first in years at his school. Emerald belts denote the warriors on Circa, and apparently Ezekiola is destined to unearth a power long buried. Thus begins his journey, in which he will travel the planets and face unexpected foes.

This was a quick read; a fun little adventure. Definitely skews more middle grade than YA. I'd love a more in depth look into the lore of the world. It seems interesting but not fully fleshed out yet. The magic system seems fairly unique, so I'm curious to see more. One of the strengths of this story is the great friendship between Ezekiola, Atlas, and Nohlan. Excited to read the sequel and see where the story goes next.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this.

This is a very interesting start to a book series for The Fountain of Fire Series. We follow Ezekiola, who finds himself marked as a warrior for the mystical order of the Emerald Belt. Along the way he meets Leanne, who has her own mystery surrounding her, and they form a connection of sorts.

As noted earlier, this is book one of the series, so I find it hard to give an overall feel of the book, but I can say that this does have an interesting start and I am curious to see what unfolds next.

This was a fun teen/YA fantasy read! Ezekiola and Leanne were great characters to root for, and Atlas and Nohlan were awesome, funny supporting characters. Watching the plot that unfolded between Ezekiola and Leanne, as well as with the core character group and Zeke was a good time! I will definitely be continuing the journey in the sequel.

Review of Advance Reader Copy

At Cypress School on the planet Circa, Ezekiola Astrid and his friends, Nohlan Eridanus and Atlas Pleione, are preparing for the graduation ceremony at which they will receive their belts. Since Ezekiola has telepathic abilities, he expects to receive a Blue Belt while Nohlan will receive the Brown Belt for those studying nature and the macrocosm and Atlas will receive the Red Belt of logic. There are no surprises until Ezekiola, instead of receiving the anticipated Blue Belt, receives the Emerald Belt of the warrior.

Ezikiola plans to speak with the headmaster, Nomi Antares, and explain that he’d received an Emerald Belt in error, that he hadn’t trained for the warrior path. But he changes his mind after an unexpected slip into another world and a meeting with an enigmatic girl named Leanne.

As Ezekiola discovers new abilities, he finds himself facing a dangerous rival determined to destroy him. Can Ezekiola prevail? And what of the mysterious Leanne?

First in the author’s Fountain of Fire series, the targeted audience for this book is the teen and young adult reader. However, those who enjoy science fiction and fantasy are sure to appreciate this mesmerizing tale of friendship, tradition, and self-discovery. Well-developed, believable characters, impressive world-building, and an inventive plot pull readers into the telling of the tale from the outset.

Unexpected twists and revelations keep the suspense building while the imaginative tale offers tantalizing hints of romance. Strengths of the narrative include Ezekiola’s resolve as he faces new and unforeseen obstacles and the strong bonds of friendship between Ezekiola, Nohlan, and Atlas.

Although the narrative is more show than tell, readers are likely to find this unique tale difficult to set aside before turning the final page.

Highly recommended.

Also included here is Chapter 1 of the next book in the Fountain of Fire series, “Ezekiola and the Rising Sons.”

Fantastical, captivating and mystical!

I DEVOURED this book! I actually had to hold myself back from reading it too fast, I didn't want it to end. This was such a refreshing read, perfectly paced, and unlike anything I've read in a while. There's something deep about this book, it's almost a new genre in itself. It has excellent worldbuilding, I loved the storyline, the entire cast of characters, (yes ALL of them), loved the originality of the names, the humour, and at times, I had goosebumps for there's a mystical feel to this book. I enjoyed the connection between Leanne and Ezekiola and what's nice about their romance is that it doesn't overhelem the story.

It's one of those rare books where the story lingers with you for a while after you read it.

Can’t wait for the sequel.

Definitely a must read, I highly recommend it! Perfect for all ages.

This book is beautifully written and had me pulled into the story right away. The storyline is unique and the characters and worldbuilding especially were just amazing. This was a breath of fresh air from what I've been reading lately, and this book definitely stands out from the fantasy stories that are out there. For anyone who is a Harry Potter fan, I highly recommend this book to young readers and adults alike.

Ezekiola and the Emerald Belt
By Lucy Kyan

Another book that I’m torn on!

The premise is really cool. I enjoy a good academic setting. The world and the magic system are intriguing and I’d love to dive into it even more. The main character is good, but the drawback kind of segues into my main not-so-good.

This book is very tell and not show. I’m told a lot about each of the characters but I don’t feel like I really get to see them show those qualities. The writing style doesn’t lend itself to giving the characters that space.

A smaller quibble would be the constant perspective jumping.

So I’ll have to make a decision on whether the pros outweigh the cons when the next book comes out.

Thanks to @netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
