Coyote Lost and Found serves as the compelling sequel to The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise. In this poignant narrative, Coyote and her father, Rodeo, grapple with their profound grief stemming from the loss of Coyote's mother and two sisters. An emotionally charged discovery occurs when Coyote stumbles upon her mother's ashes. Following a heartfelt conversation with her father, they come to the realization that they are both prepared to bid a final farewell and scatter her ashes as per her wishes. However, an unexpected obstacle arises: Coyote had inadvertently sold the book containing her mother's last wishes the previous year. This predicament sets the stage for another gripping cross-country road trip as Coyote and her dad embark on a mission to locate the missing book. True to Coyote's adventurous spirit, their journey is filled with unexpected twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Coyote Lost and Found is a worthy successor to the original, offering readers a deeper insight into Coyote's character. Both books seamlessly intertwine, creating a rich and emotionally resonant narrative experience.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This sequel hit it out of the park! I first fell in love with Coyote on the first book and this book made me love her even more. Without spoiling things, Rodeo and Cowboy are on another epic journey along with some old and new friends. There are tears, laughing and dancing. There is heartbreak and mending. What a magnificent story!

What an absolute joy it was to step back into Coyote’s world. When I heard there was a follow up to Coyote Sunrise (my favorite!), I thought - yippee! But…how can Dan Gemeinhart possibly follow up one of the best MG books of all time with a second story that will come anywhere CLOSE to the beauty and heart and magic of the first?? Well, HE DID IT! This book is perfection. Coyote and crew are even more endearing, somehow, than in the first adventure. Maybe it’s because I already consider them friends? Or maybe it’s just because this book is so remarkable. Thank you, thank you, for giving the world another powerful and funny and thrilling Coyote story. I loved it.

Wow! A sequel that was every bit as good as the first book!
After settling down for awhile, Coyote and her dad Rodeo decide to hit the open road again, this time with a very specific, and important purpose…

Memorable Quotes:
“I realized something. I realized how very, very lucky I was. I mean, for goodness sake, I outlived my knees! I outlived my hair, and my eyes, and my skin…And that’s a lucky thing, because there are plenty who don’t, dear; too many. People I’ve known and loved, wonderful people, who didn’t get to outlive very much. Didn’t outlive their parents. Didn’t outlive their childhood, even…How much would they give to have more time? To outlive their knees?”

What a great followup book! I enjoyed the adventures that the crew goes on. It's crazy to think books today will have COVID... and we loved through it.

Sometimes a sequel to a book is a disappointment. This is not the case for Coyote, Lost and Found by Dan Gemeinhart. Occurring approximately a year after the conclusion of The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise, Coyote Lost and Found continues Coyote's story with another hilarious cross-country journey on a school bus filled with interesting passengers, including her old pal, Salvador, her cat, Ivan, and of course her Dad, Rodeo. The reason for this cross-country trek is to put her mother's ashes to rest, but there is a slight problem. The place her mother wanted her ashes to be scattered was written in a special book that Coyote accidentally gave away to a thrift store. However, Coyote's father, Rodeo, doesn't know this and Coyote wants to keep it that way. So the quest is to find the book, without letting Rodeo find out that she lost it to begin with.

I loved the interesting characters and the relationship between Coyote and Rodeo. A great book all around!

Thanks to NetGalley for an eARC of this book.

It’s not often that I find a sequel as good or better than it predecessor, but in the case of this follow up to Texas Lone Star book THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF COYOTE SUNRISE, it happened. Following grieving Coyote and her father on their journey cross-country in Yager, their tricked out bus, was heart-warming, funny and surprising. Now that the two have settled down in a brick and mortar home and are working and attending school like regular folks, the pair is still grieving but differently. Then Coyote discovers a box with her mom’s ashes and a new journey begins to scatter those ashes as her mom intended, but the book in which those wishes were hidden was sold/given to a used bookstore somewhere along the original trip. The adventure resumes with new friends and old on board. Coyote learns a few more life lessons and middle grade to younger YA readers will, once again, have their heart warmed, laugh at the absurdity, and maybe not as surprised, but just as satisfied with every page. Excellent choice for grades 5-8.

4.5 stars!

My daughter (4th grade) was fond of this story about a girl trying to move on from the loss of her mother. Neither she nor I read the first book in the series, but it did not negatively impact the enjoyment of this novel.

The story begins with the main character, Coyote, who has relocated to a new town with her father after the death of her mother. She discovers her mother's ashes and learns that her mother wanted them scattered in a particular place, but she wrote her preferred location in a book of poetry. Unfortunately, Coyote gave away this book without her father's knowledge prior to their move. When the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic occurs and the lockdowns begin, Coyote devises a plan to convince her father to embark on a cross-country road trip so she can attempt to locate the missing book. Overall, this was a touching, heartwarming, and bittersweet novel about grief and new beginnings.

Thanks to NetGalley, Henry Holt and Co., and Dan Gemeinhart for an advanced reader copy of this book!

A million stars! What an absolute joy to be back with Coyote and her rag tag crew as they head out on a cross country quest for a lost book. I loved that it's set during the early days of Covid and think young readers will deeply connect to those moments. Gemeinhart is a master at crafting authentic, flawed, endearing characters and moving the story along at a good clip, making every word necessary. If you loved the first book, you'll adore this one.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the e-ARC of this middle grade sequel.

I loved The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise. I was completely invested in Coyote's grief and in her journey. I fell in love with Rodeo, and loved every traveler who hopped on their bus. When it was over, I was completely satisfied with her ending, and closed the book feeling wishing her the fondest of literary farewells. I never felt like it needed a sequel, that is until I knew it was coming. When I heard a few months ago that there was a sequel coming, I simply could not wait. I routinely checked e-ARC sites hoping I'd be able to snag a copy. Opening the approval email, I was thrilled, but couldn't bring myself to dive in. I wanted to know what happened, but didn't want it to be over. So first, I listened to the audiobook of The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise to close the gap since I first read it four years ago, and I'm so glad I did.

When I finally started Coyote Lost and Found, I picked it up and put it down a few times, just re-reading the first few pages each time. As much as I was dying to read it, I wasn't ready to know how it ended. I finally dug in, and savored it. Reading a few chapters each time, I tried to stretch it out as long as I could. Simply, I loved it. I love Coyote. My heart breaks for her over and over, but swells just as often. She's strong, kind, has a kind of heart that you can't help but root for. Though this ending was equally satisfying, I want another sequel. I want to here about every journey and every pothole. I want to know where this crazy crew heads next. I want to know about it all.

Dan Gemeinhart spins a heartfelt tale of hope and loss, friendship and breaking cultural barriers. The first was amazing and this one is even better!

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise is a book I think about often and fondly. So, when given the chance to dive back into Coyote and Rodeo’s world, I couldn’t have been happier. From the very first page, the words of Dan Gemeinhart are absolutely beautiful and draw you in to the experiences and emotions. I read a little at a time over several days so that I could savor this one. The cast of characters are easy to care about, relate to and learn from. It feels like a privilege to be a part of their stories and to go along for the ride. Both books have a special place in my reading journey and I know that will be true for many more readers to come.

Reviewing a Dan Gemeinhart book always comes with a certain amount of dread. That's because I know there's zero chance I'll be able to say what needs to be said for such an amazing work of art. Maybe calling it a masterpiece will do. No. That just sounds pretentious. Ok, let me just say, this is my 5th Gemeinhart book. I've reviewed lots of authors. I haven't read 5 books from too many authors, because once they let you down it's hard to get excited to read another. Gemeinhart is the ONLY author that's NEVER received anything less than 5 stars from me. And that's saying something. I don't give 5 stars easily. Pretentious or not, his books are masterpieces.

So this is Coyote part 2. It's what happens after the famous cross-country bus ride in The Remarkable Journey. Coyote and her dad have settled down in a house, but Coyote still likes to hang out in the bus. It's a good thing, because her hanging out in the bus is the reason the box containing her mother's ashes is discovered. But to her dismay, she's also the reason the book that says what to do with those ashes will NOT be discovered. It's not on the bus. It's somewhere between Washington and Maine. In a thrift store. Where Coyote accidentally left it. And she's going to find it.

Only Coyote would hatch the bizarre plan that follows, and only her father, Rodeo, would fall for it. She's going to backtrack across the country, revisiting thrift stores, to find that book, without anyone suspecting what she's doing. Of course a whole slew of interesting characters are going to be invited along for the ride and a ton of valuable lessons are going to be learned. It's all done with Coyote's adorable, smart, funny, pragmatic voice. There's no one like her in all of children's literature. The only criticism someone could possibly give is that the plot follows too closely to that of book one. Another road trip in a bus named Yager. Another menagerie of characters with lessons to bestow. Another amazing scene in a gas station.

I, for one, will take it, if that's what I have to do to spend a little more time with an endearing girl, named Coyote.

Coyote captures the hearts of young readers. Gemeinhart does a fabulous job making connections between his characters and our children. Many students can see themselves in Coyote and relate to her complexity in one way or another.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. Coyote is a favorite in our third grade classroom. Keep writing characters that young kids can relate to!

Coyote Sunrise is one of my all-time favorite characters, right up there with Anne Shirley. I’ve read The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise to myself and aloud to students multiple times and never fail to vacillate between laughter and tears. When I heard there was a sequel, my stomach dropped seeing the March 2024 release date. I checked my email at bedtime last night and was over the moon to receive the publisher’s email that an egalley was ready for viewing. I was soooo first week of school teacher-tired that my “I’m just going to close my eyes for a minute so I can read” was indeed more than a minute.
At 4ish this morning, I couldn’t stay in bed another minute because I had to read the entire book before school started this morning. Oh, Coyote! Her relationship with her Dad, Rodeo, her best friend, Salvador, and the bonds she makes with the new friends along the way are heartwarming. Her quest to find a special book belonging to her mom with wishes for disposing of her ashes turns into a journey of discovery and healing. I was so grateful to be reunited with my long-lost friend, Coyote. It’s a book I was sad to see end. I hope there are more adventures ahead for her.

I am a big fan of The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise and I wasn't sure how Gemeinhart could follow up. In Coyote Lost and Found, Coyote and Rodeo are adjusting to a 'normal' life. The adjustment is particularly rough for Coyote. When a pandemic hits, it is the perfect excuse for Coyote, Rodeo, Salvador, and some new friends to hit the road. Just like before, Coyote and Rodeo are working on coping with their grief while navigating life changes.
Coyote's struggle and growth ring true and her journey really takes center stage more fully than the first book. Gemeinhart always does a fantastic job of delivering emotional punches with surprising life-changing moments. The punches didn't hit quite as hard as they did in the first book, but it still works. I don't think this book stands on its own, but is a lovely continuation of the last book.

You love Coyote, you say? You're scared that the sequel won't live up to your outrageously high expectations? Stop worrying. It will!

Don't even think about reading this book without reading the first one. Coyote's whole journey is vital - I think - to really connecting with this novel.

This one begins when Coyote makes a surprising discovery: her mother's ashes. Her discovery becomes the impetus for yet another awesome group journey, and like we all expect from these characters, the journey isn't just physical. These characters grow emotionally, and readers can't help but do the same.

Gemeinhart has created such a great character with a strong voice in Coyote, and he does her justice again here. This is a fulfilling sequel, and I hope it's not the only one.

Coyote is one of the best characters ever written! Often times sequels just aren't the same as the first book, but this hits all the right marks. Another fabulous adventure with new and old friends on a bus named Yager.

Dan G. you hit a home run again! This sequel/companion Coyote Sunrise is just as delightful, moving, inspiring and tear inducing as the first. So many great quotes and teachable moments for parents, mentors and teachers to use with kids. I absolutely can’t wait to add to our library collection or have you back for a third time in the near future at our school.

I cherish the story of Coyote and Rodeo that Dan Gemeinhart so beautifully created in "The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise". It easily sits in my top 5 most beloved stories of all time. When I heard that we would be able to return to their story in "Coyote Lost and Found"...I was giddy.

Coyote and Rodeo are still navigating loss. And in this story- a literal loss of a book that is essential to bringing about closure. Their lives have started to move forward, and we begin to see that in several aspects.

These characters are so unique, so brilliant, so wonderfully, wonderfully weird, And I am so thankful that we were able to see one more time their lives back on Yager and doing what they do best- sharing open-hearted kindness, generousness. and goofy adventures. Which may or may not involve injuries and the police. Because of course it could. And- should.
