Lauren is a girl with a dark past. When she and her mother move to Happy Valley, theyr'e both looking for a fresh start. Lauren quickly begins hooking up with Robbie Crestmore, a boy with a dark past of his own. Rumor is, his girlfriends die. And so do his brother's.
This was a fast pace read that was well balanced. I enjoyed the tension throughout and guessing what was happening. I really enjoyed trying to figure how who the bad guy was, and I was wrong! This book gets points for that alone.
A great story for those fans of twisty, turny, murder mysteries where you don't see the ending til it has you hanging over the railing by your feet!
Overall I ended up enjoying this book. It's a YA mystery, and it did take a while before I was interested and invested in the plot and the characters. The main character Lauren is the new girl in town, and she is troubled after what she did in her previous school relating to someone being killed. She starts a situationship with Robbie who is the rich boy in their school. She finds out that Robbie and his brother have ex-girlfriends who both died under suspicious circumstances and everything in town thinks they did it. Lauren starts investigating the murders, and there is so drama, drugs, romance, parties, and complex high school students. The main character is very troubled, she annoyed at times especially with how she talked with her mom who was trying to help. These are high school students so I expect them to act like that lol. The twist was a good one I had started to guess who the murder was, but the way it came about and was wrapped up was interesting. If you like YA murder mysteries with complex characters, you should read this. Thank you to the publisher for this arc.
A thrilling story that takes place in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania. Joining the soccer team as the new girl, Lauren finds herself as the outcast, but soon gets wrapped up in the death of a previous student. Leading to the answers everyone has been searching for.
Be careful who you fall for...
Robbie and Trevor Cresmont have a body count—the killer kind. Handsome and privileged, the Crestmont brothers' have enough wealth to ensure they’ll never be found guilty of any wrongdoing, even if all of Happy Valley believes they're behind the deaths of their ex-girlfriends.
A thriller that isn't predictable?? Sign me up!! With characters to love, relationships to question, and a twist to die for, this book can’t get out on the shelves soon enough!
The story begins with two troubled kids finding comfort in one another. Both have experienced recent tragedies that have consumed them, leading to massive upheavals in their lives. Lauren and her mom moved across the country to escape Lauren’s past and start fresh her senior year. She finds solace in Robbie, a young man haunted by his girlfriend’s death. His brother also lost his girlfriend under suspicious circumstances, so a lot of the book is figuring out if they did or did not play a part in those deaths. I have to say that I didn’t figure out the twist, which always makes me happy. It’s a solid YA read for older teens and worth your time. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
This was a good easy read. It kept me guessing, every time I thought I knew who was behind it something else would happen than would change my mind! I would definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for a good, quick, mystery!
I enjoyed The One that Got Away with Murder. This was a very well written debut novel by this author. The story flowed well and it was easy to follow. I really enjoyed the character development and enjoyed the representation showcased.
Well. Let me say Trish out did herself with this debut novel. I loved how fast paced this book was kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. The way when you're reading this book Trish keeps you guessing and guessing. Once you think you know who the killer is SIKE! you don't. I love how the plot twists came out of nowhere because I thought I had it in the beginning and then when I got to the end it was totally different and I adored that.
I am usually not a fan of YA thrillers but let me tell you, this blew me AWAY. The tension throughout was masterful and I did not guess a damn thing. I fear if I keep writing about this I will give everything away, so just trust me when I say to read it.
**A huge thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and Trish Lundy for the opportunity to review an ARC of this book**
This was an amazing debut novel!
This was incredibly fast paced and kept my attention the entire time, I was literally at the edge of my seat.
I kept thinking I guessed the twist, and I would be wrong.
4.5 stars!
I really enjoyed Trish Lundy's THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY WITH MURDER. It had a little something for everyone... a good murder mystery, mean girls, a bad boy (who wasn't so bad after all), great LGBTQ rep, and redemption and healing for multiple characters. It was very entertaining and I'd consider it a real page turner (I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what happened!)
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher of this book for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. This book follows Lauren, who has just moved to a new city to escape her traumatic past experience. Her mom is happy with her fiancé, and she feels a little bit unseen. She finds herself becoming close with Robbie, whose family owns the hospital her mom works at, but it turns out some of his past experiences are similar to hers. She needs to figure out if she can trust him or if she should listen to her teammates. This was a good mystery, kept me guessing until the end, and I appreciated Lauren’s character and friendship development through the book. Definitely recommend!
This book was really difficult to get into. Two handsome brothers who might be capable of murder. The body count is piling up and our heroine is trying to figure out who to trust and who the killer is - before it is too late. Honestly predictable and hard to get through. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I had a blast reading Lundy's debut! The diverse cast of characters, lovable protagonist and love interest, and ominous undertones made this one hard to put down.
The One That Got Away with Murder revolves around Lauren, a senior in high school that jumps on the opportunity to transfer from California to Pennsylvania (to get away from her past) when her mom wants to move closer to her long distance boyfriend. There, Lauren meets Robbie and gets caught up in trying to figure out how and why Robbie and his younger brother's girlfriends were murdered.
The twists were well written, albeit slightly convoluted and contrived, and I was totally invested in finding out what happened that I couldn't put the book down when I hit the last quarter. This was a really enjoyable book, despite the few flaws with how some of the plot was written! It was also nice how the romance was so so slight but not out of nowhere.
4🌟!
"The One That Got Away with Murder" by Trish Lundy is a gripping debut YA thriller that weaves a tale of suspense, privilege, and dark secrets.
Meet Robbie and Trevor Cresmont, charismatic and affluent brothers whose lives are shrouded in mystery. Linked to a string of deaths involving their ex-girlfriends, the Crestmont brothers seem immune to the consequences of their actions, shielded by their wealth and privilege. The story kicks off with the mysterious drowning of soccer star Victoria Moreno at the family lake house, followed by another suspicious death a year later involving Trevor’s girlfriend.
Enter Lauren O'Brian, the new girl at school with a tumultuous past seeking a fresh start. However, her world takes a dangerous turn when she initiates a no-strings-attached relationship with Robbie. As the plot unfolds, Lauren stumbles upon alarming evidence that could implicate Robbie, putting her fresh start in jeopardy. With danger closing in and a third death shaking the town, Lauren is faced with the dilemma of whether to trust Robbie or risk becoming the next victim.
The novel promises an edge-of-your-seat experience, blending elements of mystery, romance, and the consequences of privilege. With echoes of cautionary tales and a narrative reminiscent of authors like Karen McManus and Holly Jackson, "The One That Got Away with Murder" explores the complexities of trust, deceit, and the lengths one might go to confront the past.
Readers can expect a thrilling and suspenseful ride as the characters navigate a web of secrets, danger, and the chilling realization that not everything is as it seems.
Thank you to Macmillan for the digital ARC!
THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY WITH MURDER was a gripping take on the "true-crime-inspired" genre with plenty of twists and scandal. I appreciate these types of murder mysteries where every character is a bit suspicious because it heightens the suspense, and this book definitely succeeded. Although some reveals were predictable, a few genuinely got me. I wish the character development had been a bit stronger, but that's where a lot of books in the genre tend to fall flat.
Huh. Surprise surprise! I never saw it coming! The ending, that is. And I LOVE THAT!!! I love to be smacked upside the head with a reveal and this one definitely delivered that smack. I also really dug the shirt chapters - it really made the reading seem to fly. I liked the setting and feeling of it being unfamiliar, as if I, too, we’re just learning it with Lauren.
My only complaint is weird: who in THEE hell is Alexis? The name is mentioned a couple of times by Trevor, but I have no idea who that is. Help? Anyone?
Good read. Edgy and cool. 💜📚
i really liked this book, it was very twisty and it keeps you on your toes the whole time!!! would totally recommend.
