I know when I read Tessa Bailey's books that there will be more spice than I normally am comfortable with, but I continue to pick them up because I love her characters and how they develop. This title is no exception and I am excited to read the next in the series when it's available.
Here we go! This is the Tessa we all love and miss. All the funny banter, an emotionally constipated MMC, and sprinkled with some dirty talking sexy times.
Drive by summary:
He is a professional golfer that has lost his swing. She is his number one fan until he manages to push even her away. Feeling guilty, Wells gives Josephine a proposition: come be his caddy on the tour until she can ear enough money to fix up her golf shop. Lust becomes love and we all are happy at the end.
I will say, that generally I am uncomfortable with sport star/fan romances. It always feels a bit creepy. Tessa managed to make me forget this fact and just enjoy the ride. I will say, the last chapter is one of the most romantic ones I have read in a long time.
I will be a Tessa Stan until the end.
Thank you #NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Tessa Bailey is usually hit or miss for me but I definitely think she’s onto something with sports romance. This was such a fun read, the romance, sports and banter were so well balanced and I really enjoyed their chemistry between Wells and Josephine. I’m already excited to read the next book in this series and get more of these characters!! I definitely appreciated a more relatable MMC who wasn’t just a two dimensional stereotype (aside from a few quotes from his internal dialogue that made me roll my eyes)
I’d really like to see more like this from Tessa Bailey in the future!
This book was absolutely phenomenal!
I’m a sucker for good banter and this one delivered on a whole new level. I absolutely love the entire relationship journey of Wells and Josephine. It was built on mutual respect and just so so fantastic.
The mental struggles of Wells and the chronic illness rep for Josephine were perfection. Bravo!
I loved everything about this one yall. Please excuse my pun but Tessa got a hole in one with this one!
Fangirl Down was an okay read. I liked the premise of the story and enjoyed the tension between Josephine and Wells. Tessa Bailey never disappoints with her dirty-talking heroes, but I will say, there were some sexy moments in this book that I could have lived without. Some of the other issues I ran into with this book were third-person POV & the pacing. Third-person POV is always a struggle for me. Sometimes, I'm able to make it work, and at others like this one, I definitely struggle. As far as the pacing goes, it started strong and I did find the idea of a golf star making a comeback to be intriguing, but somewhere along the way, the pacing got off and I found it a struggle to keep reading.
Overall, this book was a bit hit-and-miss for me.

Starting 2024 off right! I was weary starting this one, because well…it’s golf, but having faith in Tessa Bailey I gave it a shot, and boy am I glad I did. Truly one of the best sports romances I’ve read, and I’ve read A LOT. I like to think all romance book couples stay together after the last page, but I know these two do. They have a true partnership. It’s magical.
Thank you to the publisher, netgalley, and Tessa Bailey for an advanced copy of this book. Josephine really knows what it means to be a fan girl. There until the end.
i LOVED this! This was an adorable and sexy romance between a golfer and his super fan, who becomes his caddie! i loved how hard he fell, he was such a goner and i loved every second. i loved their friendship, their banter. and how intense and emotional their relationship turned out to be. This was a super fun, funny, spicy, emotional romance.
Honestly, these books are just a fun, sexy time. I did enjoy the character growth and seeing how crazy Wells was for Josephine. I always appreciate when the guy falls first. The characters were great, the lead in to the next book in the series worked for me) and the sexy times were sexy as always. I couldn't care less about golf, and even though it was a huge part of the story, it says something that I didn't mind those parts, either. I love that we have a competent and confident female lead who can give as good as she takes....all puns intended. Yet another book for my shelves when it releases.
This is my first ever Tessa Bailey book and I think she’s become an auto buy author for me. I absolutely LOVED this book! Fangirl Down has everything I love in a romance; a broody, yet likable MMC, a relatable and inspiring FMC, and killer intimate scenes that’ll live in my head for weeks to come (if you know, you know). This was the first time I’ve ever read a book where a main character has type one diabetes, and as someone who lives with the illness everyday, I was a little nervous how it would be depicted. Tessa did a fantastic job not only explaining the illness, but showing how it doesn’t stop someone from living life or being capable, despite how most people unaffected would picture life with diabetes. Being represented so well really meant so much, and I’m over the moon that my first experience reading a character with the same condition as me was a positive one. I also literally ship the heck out of Josephine and Wells. I would read a whole series of them just being cute and in love - I have so SO much affection for them and their dynamic. This book is just cute as hell and I had a great time.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Voyager, Avon, and the author for providing an early copy. I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced reader copy of Fangirl Down by Tessa Bailey.
This was a fun read. It reminded me quite a bit of the movie Tin Cup if Kevin Costner had been a young player and Renee Russo was his caddy as well as his therapist - but a lot steamier.
This one has all of the best elements of a great Tessa Bailey book. Characters who evolve and and improve because of their love for each other, some laugh-out-loud funny bits, and a whole lot of heat. I can’t wait to read the next in this new series.
Wells is a famous golfer, who has been off his game for a while. Even though he has been performing terribly, his number one fan keeps showing up in the crowd to cheer for him, until he manages to ruin that too. Then one day, Wells shows up at Josephine’s family golf store and asks her to caddy for him…and sparks start flying all over the place.
The banter between Wells and Josephine is fire and the spice is spicyyy. Wells is such a sweet guy underneath his grumpy exterior and I adore that SO much. He seriously went out of his way all of the time to make sure she had everything she needed and felt safe. Josephine has the type of personality that just makes you want to be friends with her in real life. She’s fun, but also independent and great at golf without Wells. I absolutely love them together.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
I love anything Tessa Bailey writes but at first I was hesitant because golf is not sexy but jokes on me because Tessa made golf Sexy!
Josephine is witty and Wells is a grumpy golfer with a great butt and put them together and you get the beat grumpy sunshine book.
Who would’ve thought an author could make me extremely invested in and care deeply about golf? Tessa Bailey is the only one who could. And damn did she make me LOVEEEEE this golf romance. Truly god tier. This has Tessa Bailey’s beautiful signature touch: dirty talk, man obsessed over his woman, and the most entertaining (amazingly unrealistic) plot to match.
I had been in a huge book slump and then this beautiful book landed on my kindle (and a physical ARC copy… thank you Avon!!!). I binged the heck out of it and now I’m in yet another book slump because of this book again. I truly adore the hell out of this book. Tessa Bailey is an auto-buy author for me and she really did an incredible job with this one. I feel like I spent my entire reading time smiling like an idiot, screaming happy screams randomly, and kicking my feet back and forth. I just simply adored this book and immediately wanted to start it over and read it again and again and again.
This will absolutely be a book I reach for to reread time and time again as a comfort read because of my insane amount of love for it. My top Tessa Bailey books since I first started reading her have been It Happened One Summer, Secretly Yours, and My Killer Vacation; and Fangirl Down absolutely made its way to my top favorite Tessa Bailey books.
One of my favorite things about Tessa’s books is the way she manages to write men who are absolutely feral for their ladies. It just brings me such comfort reading about men fawning, worrying, caring, and loving these women the way they do when Tessa writes about them. Going into a Tessa Bailey book, I always know I’ll be reading a book with this happening and it’s always just written so perfectly. I really don’t know how she does it. She seriously puts some sort of crack in her books or something.
Also, as a side note: the set-up for the next book was truly *chef’s kiss* and I absolutely can’t wait to devour that book when it comes out!!!
I’m always one that likes going into her books somewhat blindly, so I don’t want to write any sort of potential spoilers or even “soft non-spoilers” here so other people can do the same if they want. Overall, this book has become incredibly precious to me and I already can’t wait until I reread it because I just love it so much.
*Thank you Avon and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
All of the stars for Tessa Bailey's latest romcom!
Prior to reading this book I was apathetic to golf at best. Post Fangirl-Down, dare I say I'm a devotee? If anyone knows of a badboy golfer in need of a caddy-- please hit me up.
Anyway... Tessa Bailey's books are always a hit for me and Fangirl Down is certainly no exception. This book is SO ENTERTAINING. I felt like I was watching a fantastic romcom and my attention was grabbed right from the very first page. The main characters have explosive chemistry, leading to one of Bailey's more spicy novels in a while (in my opinion! this is always subjective!). I devoured this book in 48 hours and I cannot wait to reread it again soon. Fangirl Down will be one of those books I make all my friends and family read <3.
If you told me a few days ago that a golf romance would be one of my top reads of the year I would've laughed, but I honestly can say this may be one of Tessa Bailey's best rom-coms yet...
This is the truest grumpy-sunshine, but the grumbling grump is the BIGGEST softy even if it takes alot for him to even get close to admitting it. The diabetes representation in this is amazing, and something you can tell Tessa poured a lot of care and thought into, being something that is personal for her family.
Also in true Tessa Bailey fashion the dirty talk is immaculate and the chemistry in this pairing is off the charts.
SERIOUSLY, A GOLF ROMANCE? Yes, yes, and more yes....
I cannot wait for the 2nd standalone in this world, and you get a great intro into those characters in Fangirl Down.
If you are a Tessa Bailey fan, get ready for another steamy rom com that follows a professional golfer who falls for his biggest fan turned new caddy. As a sports romance fan, I never thought I’d be reading a book about golf (team hockey over here), but TB knew exactly how to make the sport less boring and sexy.
“Fangirl Down” by Tessa Bailey is a golf romance I didn’t even know I needed! In this spicy romance, Josephine, bad boys Wells Whitaker’s last fan, has finally walked away after Wells quits the tour mid round. But when he shows up unexpectedly at her door at her worst moment, he hires her as his caddy. Can the duo turn his golf game around?
This book kept me turning the pages and finishing with a day and a half and that was in between holiday celebrations! I had a hard time putting it down. I am a fan of golf, but don’t think you have to be to enjoy this book. The character development was great and the heat was turned all the way home.
First of all what else is there to say other than... it's Tessa Bailey? Like seriously. You really shouldn't need much more than that since she gets. It. Right. Each. Time. BUT! If you need further convincing
- grumpy/sunshine
- opposites attract
- forced proximity
- excellent banter
- 👀👀👀👀
The only thing she did wrong was make me invest in golf and that's something I swore I would never do.
Tessa Bailey does it again! I loved the main characters, even though I know barely anything about golf… I also really liked that there was representation for diabetes. Very well done, and absolutely adding to my sports romance recommendation list!
THIS! this is the book that we have wanted from Tessa Bailey since we went to Westport. I was a little reluctant to read another sports romance, but Wells and Josephine blew all of the competition out of the water. She is down on her luck when her favorite golfer is not only failing but miserable. Then her family's pro shop gets flooded and her insurance is cancelled and everything is going wrong.
Wells needs a reboot, but also really wants to prove to his #1 fangirl that he can do better. She needs his help and it's just the right motivation to change things up. The tension and heat and almost instant but reluctant lust between the two of them is fantastic. He is grumpy and terrible until you get to know him and then he is the very best kind of cinnamon roll hero. I was a reluctant reader for this book but am so glad that it proved me wrong.
