Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I am still not sure if I like this author. I both loved and hated Wells at the same time. He treated Josephine like she didn’t have type-1 diabetes and like she was capable of anything, which I loved. But when Josephine left the tour for two days and he acted like a giant man baby? Josephine stepped off the plane to frantic voicemails from Wells’s manager to come put some fires out. Ridic. Get it together, bro. I also don’t think it deserves a full three stars because of one scene in particular—vom city no thank u bai. I did enjoy meeting Tallulah and hockey star Burgess in preparation for the next book.
Enjoyed this one, I will always read Tessa Bailey! The female MC was really hard to like, she was a bit too earnest and I usually enjoy the grumpy/sunshine trope.
I’ve read several of Tessa Bailey’s books and this is a new favorite. Wells and Josephine are unexpectedly great together.
Wells is down on his luck. He’s had a rough childhood and upbringing. Run-ins with the law, and no one to count on until his golf mentor steps in and changes his life. He became a star and had a bright future…until he didn’t. He lost his touch, his special stroke. He spirals…
Josephine was raised on golf and knows her stuff. She’s Wells biggest fans and calls herself “Wells’ Belle”. He definitely knows who she is and she’s been nothing but an irritation especially because he’s failing.
She becomes his caddy and then they become much more to each other…
I love that Wells recognizes his faults and how his behavior has been shaped by his past. He has to face his demons and mistakes. He has to open up and let people in. Accepting him whether he’s a success or just himself—no questions asked.
Josephine is strong and smart, a really good FMC. She does make mistakes (don’t we all) and unfortunately some of them are pretty huge. She has to learn to ask for help and not be so prideful. She’s also type 1 diabetic (like my best friend) and it’s hard. Like no joke, really hard. I really appreciate the representation and the struggle to live and cope without feeling like an invalid. Like no one trusts you to care for yourself and anytime you go high or low—you must need help! *smother*
I get it. I think it’s also because she’s an only child and only daughter. But she’s more than capable of turning things around in her life and taking ownership of herself.
The spice was very good. One of the first times I felt that it was portrayed more realistically (albeit, compared with romantasy). They couldn’t get enough of each other and I was on the edge of my seat.
I have become a big Tessa Bailey fan, and Fangirl Down did not disappoint. This is the first book in her new Big Shots series and I wasn’t sure I would like this one because I am not a big golf fan, but I was pleasantly surprised.
This book is about Wells Whitaker, who was once the most promising name in professional golf, but his career has recently taken a big hit and his bad boy image is not helping. His biggest fan, Josephine Doyle, has been there through it all, and is not willing to give up on him. Something about her inspires Wells, and he hires her to be his caddy to help improve his game and his reputation. As they work together sparks fly, and they both see that there is more under the surface to each other than they realized.
Fangirl Down was a perfect grumpy/sunshine relationship. Tessa Bailey always creates relationships that are so connected that you just can’t help but root for them, and this one was no exception. I originally thought Josephine would be annoying, but I really loved her and her optimism. Wells was really hot and the juxtaposition of his bad boy image with the clean-cut world of golf was a fun twist. The plot was super engaging with a great bad-boy redemption arc and it was a really fast and easy read. Their banter and fighting was incredible, and set up the spicy scenes so well. Speaking of the spice… it was amazing. There is a lot and I give it a 4 out of 5 on the spice scale. Hot Hot Hot. She also gives us a little peek into the characters of the next book and all I can say, is that I am excited. 4 out of 5 stars.
Tessa Bailey's new sports series is a love song to my brooding soul, making even golf enjoyable! Most importantly, it made me giggle like a schoolgirl with the endearing interactions between Wells and his "Belle" Josephine. This saucy, steamy love story left me feeling incredibly good.
The high chemistry, palpable attraction, and perfect intimacy were spot-on! Tessa Bailey nailed the grumpy-meets-sunshine trope, seamlessly blending opposites-attract, workplace romance, and forced proximity into an adorable love story.
Wells Whitaker, a struggling golf star abandoned by sponsors and fans, finds solace in the beautiful, sunny Josephine Doyle, his biggest supporter. When he lets her go and realizes his mistake, he follows her during a crisis where a flood ruins her family business. Wells offers her a job as his caddie, giving him the moral support he needs while she earns money to repair the store. Sparks fly, and it becomes harder to keep their hands off each other.
Wells, seemingly brooding and self-sabotaging, hides a big, caring heart. As Josephine sees his true self, she falls for him just as hard as he falls for her. What will happen when their arrangement ends?
I loved this book and can't wait for the second in the "Big Shots" series, featuring Tallulah and Burgess. This series is my new addiction!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Voyager/Avon for the digital review copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Tessa Bailey can be hit or miss for me, but this one was a fun sports romance - even better that it featured a sport that hasn't been overdone in romance, golf. The main characters were written well and the heat between the two was believable.
The copy was kindly given to me by publisher and Netgalley for review; all opinions are my own.
Tessa Bailey has done it again!! Like, am I a golf girlie now?!
This book had the perfect blend of banter, flirtation, and sizzling romance, that I crave and I loved every moment of it. I adored the chemistry between Wells and Josephine. I’m all for good banter and this book delivered, they had hilarious moments on and off the golf course. I particularly loved the Type 1 Diabetes rep that this book had; I have never read a book where a main character had diabetes and it was interesting to see the the struggle with healthcare and the hardships of chronic illness when one doesn't have healthcare. This book had some of my favorite tropes- grumpy/sunshine and forced proximity, it also had touch her and die vibes. The chemistry, palpable attraction, verbal connection, and intimacy were perfect! Tessa Bailey couldn't have written the grumpy-meets-the-sunshine trope better:)
Unfortunately, Tessa Bailey is just not for me anymore. I liked Fix Her Up. I really enjoyed It Happened One Summer, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Window Shopping. All the others have either been a DNF or I've been disappointed I spent the time to finish them.
The premise of this book sounded so cute and intriguing. I feel like I haven't seen a ton of golf romances out there and if you know me, I'm a sucker for the grumpy x sunshine dynamic. Unfortunately, this book fell a little flat for me. I think the characters could have been more developed, they just had personas that I didn't really care for. Because of that, I found myself not invested in the romance. Overall, it was a quick simple read, but not something I would rave about. Maybe I'll have to try a different Tessa Bailey book.
The beginning was little slow for me, but I was got to about 30% I could not put this book down! It was SO GOOD! A classic Tessa Bailey romcom with the best spice 👌🏻 I will be starting the next book in this series immediately.
Finally a Tessa Bailey sports romance! I have been clamoring for this and it was worth the wait.
This had everything that made me fall in love with her in the first place including funny banter, a charming and quirky FMC, and an obsessed and wonderfully possessive MMC.
While over the top at times, it works for these characters and this premise. I can't wait for the rest of this series.
I enjoyed this book. It was light and fun and there wasn't a lot of conflict. The characters clicked from the very beginning and had a mutually supportive relationship. The T1 Diabetes rep. was top notch and hit close to home for me as my best friend has T1 and goes through many of the same challenges with people assuming physical limitations and insulin costing a ton. There wasn't a whole lot of actual story and I wish that there had been more golf in this athletic romance. I wanted to see the evolution of Wells's game over the course of a season, not just a few tournaments.
Fangirl Down By Tessa Bailey is a hilarious fun book. I loved that Josephine knew so much about golf and followed Wells throughout Florida when he was playing. This is a fun romance with all the ups and downs couples go through. Another hit by Tessa Bailey. Happy Reading!
I’m a sucker for a sports romance but until I read this book didn’t realize golf COULD be a sexy sport. Outside of this book I have zero golf knowledge.
Josephine is our FMC and she’s witty, T1D, Wells #1 fan and attempting to salvage her family’s business.
Wells is a famous golfer who has tanked his career, struggling with mental health and alcohol use as a coping mechanism.
I genuinely laughed at several moments in this Fangirl Down and was not expecting some of those spicy scenes. The witty banter between the characters was really something I had been missing in books I was reading at the time.
I will always be down for a Tessa Bailey book, but this one was tough for me to finish. The third-person POV, and the obsessed fan to start with was tough to continue. It's got the features that everyone loves from a Bailey book, romance, SPICE, and most of the time, fun banter, but this one wasn't it for me.
4 ⭐️
Honestly, I thought I would be so bored, but Tessa Bailey always knows how to make me care about random “masculine things” like golf. Josephine could really be an overeager fangirl for Wells, but learning about what truly drives her was so endearing. She truly believes and fights for the underdog! We also love to see a MMC use his clout for good despite his perpetual grumpy rain cloud. This book has some pacing issues, but if you like the spice, this is the book for you!
Warning: if you don’t like butt stuff, there is one scene. It caught me off guard so I try and warn people beforehand.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for the eARC. My opinions are my own.
Leave it to Tessa Bailey to convince me I could be a golf fan!!! This was so incredibly hot, so fun, so obsession worthy! I devoured it, and can’t wait for the next in the series, the set up for that relationship was a thing of beauty.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
4.5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Thank you Tessa Bailey, Avon Books, and Netgalley for my #gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Oh man, this was such a fun, light sports romance! As someone who is not a golf fan, I was a little worried it would be too focused on the sport but this was a great combo of the sport and romance!
Thoughts:
-I love a down-on-his-luck pro athlete who lost his mojo slowly learning to fall in love with the sport again storyline. I do wish it showed him falling in love with the sport more than just Josephine, but it was still so good
-The chemistry between Josephine and Wells leaped off the page and in true Tessa Bailey fashion, the spicy scenes were 🔥
-Josephine was a great character. She never let herself feel like she was being taken care of or that she couldn’t handle herself
-You could feel how much Wells loved her and truly wanted what was best for her

A Grumpy meets sunshine romance with the addition of some golf.
Wells' number one fan, Josephine shows up to every one of his Florida tournaments and he is done trying. At this point he only goes because he knows she will be there; she isn't just his number one fan now she is his only fan. But just when he tries to walk away from golf forever, he sees an opportunity to help Josephine.
Josephine has fought for independence from her parents by refusing to be labeled just as someone with T1D. Golf is her whole life, her family passed down their pro shop to her and she is Wells' number one fan. But when she gets to be his Caddy, she sees all the way her life can improve from a better pro shop renovation to better health insurance.
And also, you know they fall in love. So cute!
