Tessa Bailey can do no wrong!! This was such a cute and fun premise. I loved the introduction to the characters for the sequel.
Tessa Bailey is one of my top authors and I was ecstatic to receive this ARC courtesy of NetGalley and Avon & Harper Voyager. It was everything a Tessa Bailey book is known to be - hilarious, HOT, emotional, and heart warming. Josephine is extremely relatable with being down on her luck and Wells is personably relatable to myself with his history of alcohol and recovery. I was also approved for the sequel to Fangirl Down - The Au Pair Affair - and both were perfection.
This was fun and cute. Somehow, I just didn't connect with the characters, so I had a hard time sinking into the story. Perhaps, the female mc felt a bit like a caricature. I really appreciated the disability rep. As a mother of a type one diabetic, I loved seeing a romcom with a mc with diabetes. Overall, recommended, but I just didn't connect with the romance.
I think I might like golf now.
Josephine Doyle has been a fan of Wells Whitaker his entire career. That includes the downside he has been on for the last two years. That is until he insults her and tells her to find a new golfer to like. She leaves that day feeling so dejected. This is an all-time low for her until a hurricane ruins her family's golf business.
Wells feels incredibly guilty for his actions and offers Josephine a job as a caddy to help him through the tour. They become the unlikeliest of allies.
Why I loved this book:
~Dual POV
~Forced Proximity
~Diabeties Rep
~Comeback Kid
~Flirting to make him a better player
~Females in sports~
Thank you, Tessa Bailey, Avon, and Netgalley for the opportunity to arc-read this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.
Obsessed with this! I loved wells and how he fell first! This was just such a great read and I think I care about golf now
Thank you to Net Galley and Avon and Harper Voyager for an ARC! I love a good sports romcom and couldn't wait to read this one by Tessa Bailey!
Wells Whitaker is a golfer in a slump with a bad attitude, but he still has his number one fan, Josephine Doyle. After a bad encounter on the course that leads to even Josephine giving up on him, Wells shows up at her family pro shop with a once in a lifetime opportunity to caddy for him. Josephine decides to take Wells up on his offer - hoping to get Wells out of his golf slump while splitting the prize money to renovate the pro shop.
I loved how fun this book was, and Wells and Josephine's chemistry and banter was amazing! It was fun to see the book lean onto some hilarious "fangirl" behavior while pushing back on sport/fan stereotypes. It was also very sweet to see how under his rough demeanor, Wells, was just a softy who wanted to take care of Josephine and encouraging her to chase her dreams!
If you're looking for a fun, sporty read this is perfect for you!
I have always felt like Tessa Bailey's books are great beach reads. They are easy going and no-nonsense. I enjoyed the golf aspect of the story. it is always fun to be introduced to activities and lifestyles that you don't know a whole lot about.
The underlying plot of an MC with diabetes is also one that I have not read before and it was so interesting getting to understand that lifestyle and also the feelings of pity that others may have.
The romance was started as a "kind-of" enemies to lovers, even thought I was more-so strangers to lovers. I am always down with a grouchy romance - sometimes relates to my own life and my grouchy man.
I did enjoy the witty banter and an independent woman who takes on the whole male dominated caddie position.
Another hit from Tessa Bailey! This was so fun and funny. As a "golf widow" myself, I loved Bailey choosing a sport not often represented in fiction, especially rom-coms! I laughed out loud so many times while reading this, and really fell in love with Josephine and Wells. I'll definitely be recommending this to friends looking for a fun read this spring - it will be a perfect companion for the Masters in April!. I'll be looking forward to Bailey's next release!
Tessa Bailey literally sprinkles drugs in her books. If ANY OTHER AUTHOR wrote a romance book about a GOLFER (??????) I would never have picked this up. I loved this book and it was SO CHEESY AND SO CRINGE AND SO PERFECT!!!!!!! These characters omg. Grumpy sunshine, number one fan turned love interest, man who thinks he doesn't deserve her but clearly does. UGH all of the feelings.
10/10 must read especially for the golf girlfriends out there. it was so fun and hilarious. If you've read it, the toes scene...sent me into orbit I literally think about it once a day and it still makes me laugh.
To no one's surprise, Tessa Bailey always writes the best romcoms so this is a must read.
I wanted to love this one so much, I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it’s because golf isn’t my thing; but I didn’t feel a connection to any of the characters.
Wells Whitaker was a golf player at the top of his game. Recently his bad temper, bad attitude, and bad golf game have plummeted him from popularity, except for one lone loyal fan - Josephine Doyle. Josephine runs a golf shop that has recently been flooded by a hurricane. Without health insurance for her insulin needs and flood insurance for her family business, she cannot turn down the opportunity to become a caddie for Wells. When they start traveling together and getting to know each other, their relationship will take a turn neither of them expected.
This book is a perfect Tessa Bailey novel. It has the drama, the romance, the angst, and the spice! If you are a Tessa Bailey fan, don't miss this one!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for the ARC of Fangirl Down.
This story will live rent free in my head in a way that no other romance book has. Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed pretty much all of Tessa Bailey's body of work and have become a fan of the contemporary romance genre in the last few years, but very few have left me thinking, "yes, this is a real problem" rather than screaming at the book "omg use your words!" While Wells does turn around his issues and become a more self-aware man in a very short time without the massive amounts of therapy this would likely require, I was rarely bothered by this because the dual POV provides the reader so much access to his inner dialogue and thought process. It felt like we were working through the issues together.
Wells is a dark horse. He is brooding, self-destructive, determined, and I would say hopeful as well, even if he's afraid to show it. Josephine is loyal to a fault, stubborn, self-possessed, and refuses to ask for help even to her detriment. Bailey handles Josephine's health issues in a way few authors can manage. It's part of the story, part of Josephine, but not the point of the story. There is no "overcoming a disability to succeed" blah blah that can feel very stereotypical and stifling. It is relevant, informs the way Josephine lives her life and the development of her character, but is not the point around which the story is built. I would love to see more authors handle disability and difference representation in this manner.
The spice. Wow the spice. The characters had amazing chemistry with banter and flirting until it evolved into more. Personally, I would rate the spice on this book higher than Bailey's other recent works as it starts sooner, occurs more frequently, has a bit of kink and quite a bit more language. Wells and Josephine are varied, thorough and not restricted to their own hotel rooms.
The story also sets up for another sports romance between Burgess, Wells' hockey player single dad buddy, and Tallulah, Josephine's bubbly and brilliant best friend. I am beyond excited for that one as well.
This book left me wondering if I need to start watching golf.
Badboy professional golfer, Wells, is down on his luck and growing more and more grumpy with each tournament he flops. Even though his ranking continues to drop he cannot shake his biggest fan, Josephine. Until he finally pushes her to walk away. Knowing he made a mistake and worrying about her after a hurricane devastates her family’s pro shop, Wells goes to check on her and ends up striking a deal to make her his caddie for the rest of the tour. The two cannot deny their chemistry - both emotional and sexual. As Josephine becomes Wells good luck charm the two find they rely on each other more and more.
This one is steamy and sexy and fun! I could not put it down. The chemistry between Wells and Josephine jumped off of the pages. Thank you Netgalley and Avon for the egalley in exchange for my honest review.
I love Tessa Bailey. I have read many of her books and have enjoyed them all. This book is no different. Sports romances are on of my favorite then throw in grumpy sunshine and I’m sold.
"His entire universe. His entire existence came down to her."
Tessa Bailey never disappoints me! I absolutely LOVED this book. The banter, plot, characters, the spice. *chefs kiss*. I have never read a golf romance and never enjoyed watching it, so I didn’t know what to expect or if I could enjoy it. But Tessa proved me wrong, I actually enjoyed reading about it and now might check it out when it's on tv. I also appreciated the diabetes representation in the book and how realistic it was.
In the beginning of the book, we meet Wells and Josephine at a golf event. Wells has lost his desire to play, he hasn’t played well in two years. But Josephine is still his number one fan and the only one who cares about him. After he quits and loses her as a fan, he realizes his mistake. He offers her a job to be his caddie
One reason I love Tessa Bailey books is that she writes great characters. Both Wells and Josephine are amazing characters. Wells is a bad boy golfer, he’s broody, grumpy, and hates everyone but her. Josephine is strong, caring, funny, loyal, and protective of those she loves. Wells did everything he could to push her away, but she doesn’t let him and slowly gets past his walls. Slowly he realized that she brought out a better version of himself, and worked on his issues. The chemistry and tension between the was *chefs kiss*. The spice oh my…don’t even get me started on the dirty talk! It had me blushing and fanning myself. I just love them and this book.
This book includes:
✔️ Grumpy x sunshine
✔️ Bad boy golfer
✔️ She's his #1 fan
✔️ boss x employer
✔️ Forced proximity
✔️ Type 1 diabetes rep
✔️ 'He hates everyone but her'
✔️ She falls first but he falls harder
✔️ Spicyyy
5/5 stars
2/5 spice
This book was so funny and lighthearted! I didn’t know that I’d fall in love with a book about a moody golf player, but here we are! Their journey from fangirl and has-been golfer to the adorable couple they are at the book was such a fun ride! I found myself laughing out loud so many times! Wells and Josephine had such good banter, which then translated to amazing chemistry!
This book also balanced some very emotional moments as well, such as Josephine’s struggle with diabetes and Wells’ surprisingly depressing backstory.
Overall, I loved this book!
Alright…Finished this book weeks ago…but I finally had a chance to let my thoughts marinate and solidified that this will probably be my last Tessa Bailey book that I will ever read. I had mid-feelings about It Happened One Summer but this one just wasn’t it for me at all.
This read like a trope checklist and plot was not the best but mid.
Definitely not a fan of the 🍑 scenes. The ‘Touch her and die’ trope was hilarious to read, cause the ML is a golfer…What he gonna do? Calling his lawyer? "bad boy golfer" in khaki golf pants? 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you NetGalley, Avon and Harper Voyager for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!!
Tessa Bailey is the only person who could make me smile, laugh, and kick my feet while reading a book about golf.
I'll be honest, I did not have high hopes for this book. I'm not that into sports romances, and I'm certainly not into golf or the culture of the sport. But I love Tessa Bailey and always have a good time with her books. Boy oh boy did Fangirl Down surprise me.
Is it a literary masterpiece? No. Did I have an absolute blast with it? Yes. So much yes.
Incredibly entertaining, very spicy (probably the filthiest TB has written yet), and so sweet and heartwarming it borders on fantastical and cringey. There are plenty of cringe moments, but there are also wholesome ones highlighting men's mental health, the importance of equal partnership, and even callouts of the absurdity of the American healthcare system.
This is a really enjoyable, contemporary, sports romance. It's a nice quick, light read. This will be a big hit for those who love grumpy x sunshine. I found this to be a funny read, I found myself chucking out loud a few times. And the banter between the two main characters had me kicking my feet- so good! I also appreciated the diabetes rep! I did end up speed reading through some of the spice, as it just wasn't doing it for me but to each their own.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for providing an eARC of this book.
i was a bit reluctant on this but it was very cute! i loved seeing the progression of the relationship. it's not as good as other tessa bailey books (it happened one summer is my fave) but it has the same charm that tessa bailey fans will love!
