Really tried to start this book multiple times but could not get into it the storyline enough to enjoy it.
Beth Katz is an FBI special agent who's skill to tracking serial killers. She developed this skill after living with a serial killer, her father. Now she tracks them, but also kills them, when she can, a vigilante. The ones she kills are predators, those who prey on young girls. When the book opens, Beth rescues a child and kills the kidnapper, but tells her partner that when she came upon him, he was already dead. She is not believed, and the next thing she knows, she has been transferred to Rattlesnake Creek, Montana to work with (ie train with) FBI Senior Special Agent Dax Styles. She has to learn how they do things out west, but before long, they are tracking down the "Pied Piper" a serial killer who is killing children throughout the state. What Beth realizes is that this killer always takes two girls, one is found dead, the other disappears. Her goal is to find the second girl and find out what has been happening to them. When she comes face to face with the killer, will she turn him over, or will she end his life?
I wasn't sure when this book started how I would feel. I am not a fan of serial killers, even vigilantes who are killing bad people, but something about Beth's character called to me. This was an extremely interesting plot, one that was a bit convoluted as one thing led to something else. I really liked seeing how Beth and Dax would work together. He is different from other partners she worked with as he is a bit of a maverick himself. He plays the game with other law enforcement, but supports Beth and believes in her. Styles has always been a loner, so working with Beth was a bit out of his comfort zone. He didn't completely trust her, and rightfully so as she was keeping secrets and plans from him. The investigation into what happened to the second girls was dark, and nasty, but unfortunately, it was also believable. I'm not going to say much more, except that this was a creepy story, one with twists, extremely tense moments and great characters. The audiobook was narrated by Lauryn Allman and she does an amazing job with the characters, their voices and the storytelling. She pulled me into the story even more. This book is a police procedural, crime thriller and mystery all rolled into one. I am looking forward to the second book in this series. Shadow Angel.
My husband and I listened to this audiobook on a road trip. Neither of us wanted to get out of the car as we wanted to see what happened next! This book had great characters, perfectly paced twists and turns and an amazing story.
An addictive listen and excellent introduction to a new series. I would highly recommended!
I want to thank NetGalley, D.K. Hood and Bookouture Audio for the ARC audio of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
This was an excellent introduction to a new series, and straightaway you buy into Beth and what she is doing, even if it isn’t by the book! This book moves along at pace and you just do not want to put it down. I can’t wait for the opportunity to continue with this series.
This was my first book by this author but based on the excellent plotting, characters and the storyline it certainly won’t be my last. You shouldn’t like what Beth is doing but she quickly has you on side and you are supporting her all the way. I also felt the narration in this one was very strong, with a good narrator and for me this only added to the book.
I am happy to recommend this book to others, especially if they enjoy high quality crime fiction.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a great start to a new series. I felt a familiarity as I started to read this one. Not sure if it was the writing, if it was Beth being introduced in the Kane and Alton books or if just reminded me of something, but I felt instantly connected with her. And honestly I couldn’t decide whether she is good or bad with her vigilante justice. Ridding the world of the scum of the earth, but without an investigation and trial. This cat and mouse that the author sets up with her and her partner Dax is quite intriguing. Chapters from both main characters POVs added to my interest.
Both Beth and Dax are strong and independent, which makes their partnership of interest, and they do complement each other as they work together on the case, whether they believe or realize it. They are searching for someone taking pairs of girls. And while the case it straightforward, I was interested in to watch the pair work together and see how Beth would handle her urges with a partner.
Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.
I liked this one a lot! I was a little worried at the start that the main character would end up being too "I can do anything without any training or trying" but she was actually really well written and I enjoyed every second. I would definitely read more in the series or by this author. The narrator did a good job as well.
I loved this book. I gave me "Dexter" Vibes. I loved the main Character Beth Katz. There was great character creation. I couldn't wait until the next time I could listen to the audiobook. This is a great book for crime junkies. I kept wondering how Beth would react to in scenarios. I loved the dynamic of Styles and Beth. I feel like Styles also may have a secret he is keeping. I will definitely be reading the next book!
I absolutely loved this book! The narrator was amazing and the plot was perfect. I absolutely loved Beth’s vengeful side and the relationship she builds with her new partner was so heart warming
Dark Angel by D.K Hood Narrated by Lauryn Allman is the first book in the new brilliant Detective Beth Katz series and it was a gripping and unputdownable FBI agent crime thriller that will have you hooked from the beginning till the very end. Detective Beth Katz has a knack of finding serial killers, well she did have a good teacher - her father. So when she joined the FBI she wanted real justice for all her victims!!!
However, she has a dark side and has to keep this side hidden from everyone including her colleagues. After her last case she was she was sent to Rattlesnake Creel and she has to work closely with her new partner Dax Styles. This is going to be tricky.......as Dax is watching her every move and she likes working on her own.
This new book is excellent and full of great twists and turns throughout. A brilliant start to a new series.
The narrator Lauryn Allman was excellent.
Big Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
An interesting ensemble of characters that keep you reading.
Fascinating lead with huge potential that is not quite reached or explored in this first outing for Detective Beth Katz, however it is ONLY her debut so you’ll find that you will wait for a follow up with bated breath.
Chilling and quite horrifying, the story is terrifying and is very well written so you rapidly continue, reaching an explosive ending that you would never expect.
I finish wishing that the back story of the characters were more in depth and detailed yet this story is recommended for all fans of the crime genre.
Holy Smokes.
This is my first book by this author. And I was reluctant because I’m not a fan of this trope but since it was an audio I thought why not.
And I’m so glad I did. This book was break neck fast paced. I’m not sure about Beth yet. But man it was a good read. I’m intrigued to see what’s next. I’ll be diving into book 2.
This is the first book in the series of Special Agent Beth Katz. I listened to the audio and the narrator did a great job narrating the book. It was an amazing story filled with great suspense. I was hooked from the start and didn't want to get out of my car so I brought it into my house and continued listening until the very end. This is one you don't want to miss listening to. If you like suspense with your thriller reads then you will love this book.
Loads of trigger warnings on this one. It’s dark, disturbing and distressing. But it it’s so well written that I was immediately hooked on this first of a brand new series.
A detective who is the daughter of a serial killer and also a psychopath herself? Sounds like a reach. But my god she’s well written and believable, and she’s only killing the really bad guys! The story is fast paced, it’s eerie, it’s creepy, it’s fantastic.
I can’t wait to read the next in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookature Audio for the opportunity to listen to this Audio book in return for an honest review.
Holy cow this is a great way to start a series. It is perfectly rolled over from the Kane and Alton series. The plot is very unique and interesting, without being over the top. I absolutely love her new partner Dax Styles. I look forward to watching their partnership grow and see how she keeps dark half hidden from him. Can't wait for the next one!
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator is fantastic! This is a new to me author and this will definitely not be the last, loved their writing style! The mystery was interesting and I couldn’t get enough. Can’t wait for the next one in the series!

It was Beth Katz's serial killer father who made her like she is: a successful FBI agent and an unstoppable vigilante dedicated to hunting down murderers who have evaded capture. Beth will push herself to the limits to deliver justice. Even if it means killing those who deserve to die.
When the body of missing schoolgirl Brooklyn Daniels is discovered in a secluded patch of woodland on the outskirts of town, Beth and her partner Dax Styles race to the scene. Brooklyn and her best friend left home to pick wildflowers a week ago and vanished without trace.
Taking in Brooklyn's body carefully laid on a blanket and the dress neatly folded next to her, Beth suddenly freezes. She's seen this before: in the files of a cold case. The perpetrator takes two girls-one vanishes, the other is killed and left with her clothes beside her. Now Beth knows she has a twisted serial killer on her hands, she'll stop at nothing to catch him. Even if it means going against Dax's orders...
Desperate to find the other missing girl, Beth's heart pounds as she puts herself up as bait and walks into the secluded forest, knowing evil is lurking nearby. With Dax watching her every move, Beth prays the gamble pays off. Can she outsmart the murderer, or did she just walk into a trap? And when Beth finally comes face to face with the killer, will she hand him over or serve justice of her very own?
My Opinion
I have no idea what originally appealed to me about this book but from the beginning I was hooked. This was such a strange concept to me. This is a well-written, faced-paced, great introduction to the Special Agent Beth Katz series. I already have the next book in the series lined up to read and I am sure it won't be long before I get around to it.
This reminded me of Dexter (not that I watched a lot of it) so if you enjoyed Dexter then it looks like this will a series for you.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'Dark Angel' by DK Hood.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for DK Hood, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 12th September 2023.
This is the ninth book I have read by this author. It is also the first book in the 'Detective Beth Katz' series. I have previously read 'Cross My Heart' (book 12 in the Detective Kane and Alton series), 'Fallen Angel' (book 13 in the Detective Kane and Alton series), 'Don't Look Back (book 13.5 in the series), ' Pray For Mercy '(book 14 in the Detective Kane and Alton series), 'Kiss Her Goodnight' (book 15 in the Detective Kane and Alton series ) 'Her Bleeding Heart' (book 16 in the Detective Kane and Alton series) 'Chase Her Shadow' (book 17 in the Detective Kane and Alton series) and 'Their Wicked Games' (book 19 in the Detective Kane and Alton series) and I would highly recommend them all.
This novel consists of a Introduction, 48 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
OMG!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THIS BOOK and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SERIES!!! D.K HOOD you just keep getting better and better!!!
Well, Well, Well!!!! Firstly, I must admit that being a humongous fan of the amazing D.K Hood's Detective Kane and Alton series I was a bit dubious when I realised this was a start of a brand new series. I mean, for starters how on Earth is she going to match the amazingness of Kane, Alton and the rest of the gang? How could she make another series just as good or even better that the Detective Kane and Alton books? Well ladies and gentlemen I haven't got a clue how this queen of crime does it but by God she absolutely smashed it out of the water and I fell in love!!!! Don't get me wrong I did miss some of the amazing characters from the Detective Kane and Alton series but all was not lost!!! The absolutely incredible DK Hood knows her fans so well and knew that we would be having withdrawals from them so she makes sure that this cracking series not only includes Rattlesnake Creek but we also have a crossover of some of the fantabulous characters!!! Who I hear you ask? Well, you'll have to give this series a try to find out won't you?? Needless to say you won't be disappointed and I was absolutely landed myself!!!!!
This is yet another book and series that is fantastically written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. DK Hood way of writing is perfectly evocative and she has such a creative imagination!! Even with nineteen amazing books in the Kane and Alton action packed series she is still coming up with unique and action packed storylines and another whole series that absolutely grip the reader immediately from page one to the very end!!! Hood's fantastic and evocative writing skills ensured the descriptions were so vivid and realistic I felt myself feeling the fear running through me and the hairs on my arms raise. This has got to be one of the best storylines I have ever read!!!! Just when you've read the best book in this series and it can't get any better BANG DK Hood does it again!! I absolutely loved all the crossovers from the Kane and Alton books from cases to characters to locations but one of the best things I loved about this book is our main protagonist Beth who has her own dark secrets that she must keep hidden from the rest of the characters!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!! This book really will have you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails and even covering your eyes at times!!!! Oh and did I mention the bombshell, jaw dropping and explosive twists and turns throughout??? Well I am gobsmacked that.....
Ooops I can't tell you!!! That would just be spoiling it wouldn't it? So if you want to know what the twist is, who the killer is, why they are killing and much, MUCH more you will just have to grab your copy of this epic thriller today!!!! Needless to say I absolutely LOVED the storyline, LOVE this series and LOVE this amazing author!!!. This book is absolutely perfect for any crime lovers as you are literally reading about crime, twists and murder!!! It just does not get better than that!!! Just seriously, I cannot say how brilliant all this book was!!! The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, murder, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! I genuinely thought for once I had actually worked out who it was in this amazing series but YET AGAIN DK Hood proves me wrong!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! LD.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which has absolutely shines through the Kane and Alton series along with this one which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is one of the best series I have ever read!!
This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Lauryn Allman who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Lauryn did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by D.K Hood but also to listening to more books narrated by Lauryn! I have previously listened to 'The Niece' by Georgina Cross that Lauryn also narrated and did an amazing job with that book too and I would also recommend reading or listening to it.
Do not start this until you have cleared yours schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!
It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but also any characters that may make repeat appearances during the series too.
I absolutely LOVED meeting and getting to know all the new characters in this book along with meeting some of the amazing characters from her Kane and Alton series again and they are all realistic and I became completely invested in them. The characters very quickly became like friends to me I feel like I have got to know them so well and so quickly with the new characters and I absolutely LOVE Beth!!!! She is such a dark horse and a dark angel which makes the title for this book perfectly. She reminded me very much of Dexter from the book and TV series. If you are a fan of Dexter then you will love Beth!!! In regards to the previous crossover characters (who I won't name as I don't want to spoil the fun) every time I meet them again I am landed and every time I have to say Goodbye I am gutted I have to wait to greet them again. I cannot wait to meet Beth and Dax again. I really enjoyed seeing how the dynamics of this new team were going to go and the power struggle between Beth and Dax was definitely intriguing to "see" play out. I absolutely adore the fact that Dax has a dog called Bear as that is one of the other things I loved about the Kane and Alton series and that is Duke and Zorro (dogs) played such large parts. I am a massive animal lover and even run my own cat rescue called Golden Oldies Cat Rescue And Hospice so any animals playing main parts in books are always a huge bonus for me!! DK Hoods fantastic evocative writing skills and Lauryn's amazing narrative skills really bring all these characters off the pages and into real life and I just loved getting to meet them all!!! Anyway, before this turns into too long an essay I will wrap it up by saying I cannot wait to meet all these characters and more again in the second book in this amazing new series which is called 'Shadow Angel' which I am actually off to read now!!!
Congratulations D.K Hood on yet ANOTHER HUMONGOUS success!!! Very rarely an authors books get better but you have certainly mastered it!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books and this is exactly why you are one my favourite crime authors!!! Here's to your next guaranteed success 🥂
This book is definitely in my top 5 and considering I've read 1000's this is a HUGE achievement!!! This series is also in my top 3 ♥
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the Introduction, Prologue and first 2 chapters of D.K Hood's 'Shadow Angel' which is the second book in this series and promises to be just as addictive as this book!!! I am actually off to read that next so keep your eyes peeled for my review of it coming soon!!
Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable crime thriller that will keep you up all night. An absolutely explosive start to what is guaranteed to be an epic new series by the amazing D.K Hood

"Dark Angel" by D.K. Hood, the first book in the Detective Beth Katz series, is a gripping and unputdownable FBI agent crime thriller. The narrative revolves around Beth Katz, an FBI agent with a dark past and a hidden knack for understanding serial killers, thanks to her own father's haunting legacy. Partnered with Dax Styles, they uncover a chilling case of missing girls and a twisted serial killer dubbed the Pied Piper. Hood's writing keeps you on the edge with its suspenseful twists and turns, making it a must-read for thriller enthusiasts. The new characters and captivating storyline immediately drew me in, solidifying this book as a promising start to an exciting series.
I’ve listened to the audiobook of this story and the narrator did an amazing job in bringing up to life these characters and me being a very visual person, I found the whole experience so addictive and interesting.
Dark Angel by D.K. Hood is the first book in the Special Agent Beth Katz Series. This is my first book by D.K. Hood and it was such a great fast paced book. I can’t wait to read the 2nd book in the series!
Beth Katz is a badass successful FBI agent who is on a mission to save women and children. Beth feels like she is an expert because her father was a serial killer. She is able to think like a serial killer. Her ways aren’t always by the book or even legal for that matter, but she gets the job done. After saving a little girl from being kidnapped by a pedophile, her captain feels she needs a change of scenery and transfers her to Rattlesnake Creek, Montana.
When she gets to Rattlesnake Creek she meets Dax Styles a no nonsense former military FBI agent. They are trying to find young girls who are going missing by two’s and being murdered by a series killer named the Pied Piper. They are racing against time to find the girls and try to prevent the next kidnapping.
I love the pairing of Beth and Styles they push and test each other. It’s so interesting to read and be part of police procedures and investigations from beginning to end. The narration was so good, the book was suspenseful, and fast paced book. Thank you to NetGalley, D.K. Hood, and BookOuture for letting me listen to this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I give this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Wow! What a start to a brand-new series by D.K. Hood. Detective Beth Katz is great, I loved her and her sidekick, Dax Styles. We have recently visited Montana, so the mentions of bears and elk, and the scenery, had me invested from the beginning.
Hood brought me right into the heart of the story with her writing, describing scenes in such detail I could almost smell the metallic tang of the blood and the yummy smells of TJ’s diner.
Beth has her own unique way of dealing with serial killers, but you’ll have to read Dark Angel to discover just what that is and what happened in her tragic past.
There are lots of trigger warnings so check these out before you buy the book, but as long as you’re ok with them all and you enjoy an FBI police procedural with a difference, then I’d highly recommend Dark Angel.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review Dark Angel by D.K. Hood.
