I received a free copy of, My Unexpected Life: Finding Balance Beyond My Diagnosis, by Jennifer Gasner, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Jennifer Gasner knew there was something wrong with her body, she found out she has Friedreich's Ataxia, which is a rare inherited disease. Jennifer found her diagnosis in her senior year of high school, she had to change her dream college for another one. This is a good memoir, I enjoyed reading about Freidreich's ataxia, and how people with disabilities cope.
Jennifer Gasner's memoir "My Unexpected Life: Finding Balance Beyond My Diagnosis" is an amazing tour de force! Gasner skillfully depicts how she grew up with Friedreich's Ataxia, a rare progressive disability. Friedreich's Ataxia eventually leads her to using a wheelchair.. This turn of events, something Gasner had dreaded for years, proves to be illuminating as readers learn how empowering it can be to use wheelchair. Ultimately, Gasner smashes many stereotypes people have about wheelchairs and the disabled. Her story is honest, remarkable, and inspiring to say the least—the author took me on a journey that I looked forward to reading every night. I also loved her 80's music references and her wonderful connection with the rock star Dave Matthews. Gasner demonstrates how it is possible to not only live with a profoundly challenging disability, but to thrive with it and take pride in who she is as a human being. Her story is appealing to everyone. I truly loved this book!
