As someone who goes to Vegas two to three times a year, I really enjoyed this book. My husband and I have been going for twenty + years, and this was a great read about the lives of people who live and work in Vegas, as well as some of the things we will never get to experience. Absolute must read for fans of Vegas and what goes on there
Since we love to visit Vegas a few times each year, I was really interested in this book! It isn't the typical fictional Patterson mystery. This is a nonfiction about the behind the scenes look at what it takes to keep Vegas running smoothly. It wasn't what I was expecting but I truly did enjoy it!
Thank you to Little Brown and Company and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.
What Really Happens in Vegas provides a backstage look at all that shines and glitters in the place that never sleeps. James Patterson and Mark Seal have done their research and shared it with their readers. In true Patterson fashion, it is told as a story. Patterson and Seal provides descriptions and back stories that make you feel like you are walking along the strip beside them. I have seen the Bellagio but never thought about how it worked. I will never look at it the same way again. I have heard the stories of old Vegas where you could eat for days on $5. Patterson explains how and why the changes were made to provide fine dining experiences. Most interesting for me was the history of the Wynne family. Definitely a must read before going to Vegas. Thank you, NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I have never been to Vegas, but it has always intrigued me, so when I saw this book, I knew I wanted to read it. It was an interesting read, getting to know what Vegas is like, the behind the scenes of Vegas, and the people in Vegas. I have always been a country girl, and would never be able to navigate Vegas, so this was my opportunity to be there, without actually going.
It is a wonderful book, and was glad I could visit Vegas this way, because the writing made me feel I was there.
I received an ARC from Little, Brown and company through NetGalley.
I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live and work in Las Vegas. This books gives you a behind the scenes look. Very interesting.
A behind-the-scenes look into what happens in Las Vegas that you normally don’t hear about. From an initial idea to development of the drive-thru wedding venues, Elvis impersonators, yoga by helicopter ride, escort services, limos, the awe-inspiring hotels, shows, enticing celebrity chefs to open restaurants, big spenders, big losers, and more. Those who made it big and some who didn’t. An interesting read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have read every book from James Patterson. That being said this book is a little different. It is the behind the scenes of las Vegas. It tells the story behind Steve Wynns rise to fame in the hotel business. How Cirque de Sol A came to fruition. And a few other things that make you go “” hum I never knew that”.
It’s a really interesting snd fascinating book from a favorite author.

An unconventional history book that reads like a novel.
This book is filled with fascinating and fabulous personal accounts and history of the people who made and make Las Vegas.
This book gives you a behind-the-scenes look at Vegas. If you have ever wondered how something got its go in Vegas, then you probably want to read this book. I have never been to Vegas but this book makes me want to go and see the things that are talked about in this book. Never thought about all the things that have to be done to keep a city going 24/7. Things just have to do what they are supposed to or the whole city is disrupted and thrown off. Visitors expect things to be ready for them and to go as planned. James Patterson and Mark Seal give you great stories about Vegas that you never think about.

This is a book about how Vegas runs and some of the interesting stories on how it was built and developed. While this book might be very interesting to those who have spent time in Vegas or construction and the whys of different things, it wasn’t something I was very interested in.
With What Really Happens in Vegas by James Patterson and Mark Seal, I felt like I had been transported there for several hours. Filled with fun, engaging, insider-view stories, this book is captivating for those who enjoy learning more about the reinvention and re-creation of Vegas.
Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for the opportunity to read this entertaining ARC.
Prolific author James Patterson teams up with Mark Seal for a delightful non-fiction book about all the behind the scenes things necessary to keep the 24 hour city glittering and amazing. Starting with the scuba divers who do daily maintenance at the Bellagio Fountain, the book is structured as a journey: from the airport with 1400 slot machines and its expansive Liquor Library in baggage claim, to the seven high end Rolls Royce chauffeurs who take you to your fantasy destiny. This book tells a lot of incredible tales about old Vegas history and current secrets. It really is like meeting a Vegas old-timer at a bar and staying (plus drinking) for hours while the guy spins all his stories about celebrities and gangsters.
Among other tales, Patterson details the life of a VIP concierge who fulfills the last minute dreams of high rollers; a Midwest patron who hits it big at the at the Wheel of Fortune Machine while at the airport; the characters of the quickie wedding chapels; the day pool girls; the housewives on secret getaways. Each chapter is infused with the spirit of Vegas and it’s an interesting read — possibly a necessary read if you’re on a plane headed to Vegas! 4 stars!

Thank you to @netgalley and @LittleBrownandCompany for this ARC. James Patterson once again writes about something that you didn't know you wondered about until you read it. This book explains several behind the scenes parts of Vegas including but not limited to the start of Steve Wynn, how Cirque du Soleil grew in Vegas, when Vegas became a food Mecca with several chefs moving to new signature restaurants, and a story from a VIP driver and poker dealer. As someone that has visited Vegas both for work and play, this book fascinated me. #WhatReallyHappensinVegas #JamesPatterson #Dec2023 #LittleBrownandCompany
Anyone who has been to Vegas will love this book. From how the fountains work to the gambling floor to the famous Elvis impersonator Patterson and Seal has it covered - in depth, well researched and a fascinating read.
I’ve only visited Las Vegas once and wanted to hear more stories about what goes on there. This collection of short essays gives the reader interesting information especially about the people who made Las Vegas famous and infamous.
I really enjoyed this book tremendously. Wonderful look at Vegas from those who are front and center. Was interesting to read about some of the people that work in Vegas and what they do. Some of the jobs sounds like a lot of fun!!! We also get backgroung on some of the hotels, ( I want to stay at the Bellagio!!...lol). There is even a chapter about Evel Knievel's failed jump. Something for everyone can be found in this book. Very good book, a must read. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest Recieving the book in this manner has no bearing on this review.
