A really lovely combination of well thought out real life photographs and beautiful illustrations throughout the book.
It is a great non fiction book which is easily accessible with hugely vibrant colours.
The book takes you on a tour of the world with some specific countries such as India, Indonesia, Magagascar and Mexico. On each double page spread there is a map indicating exactly where the place is on a globe.
The book also engages readers about the important topics such as endangered animals and extinction.
Accessible to all ages
This book is adorable and would make the perfect gift for anyone who loves animals or zoos! I am passionate about both animals and zoos, so this book was right up my alley. The first couple of pages are introductory and begin with basic science on species, climate, and what it means to be endangered.
From there, we travel the globe – “a journey across the world and into the wild”-- and with each turn of the page, we are brought to a new region. The book is set up to give a bit of information about the region with a photograph of an animal, with the main feature being the wonderful illustrations. These depict several animals, generally with at least one being in motion.
Much like a zoo exhibit, all around the animals are informative blocks of information. These are bite-sized learning opportunities with some information on the region and what caused the imbalance of the animal population, along with fascinating information regarding these animals. Each section also contains a detailed look into the characteristics of the main animal discussed for that region, along with a global icon indicating location. At the end of the book, we learn of the animals that have sadly become extinct and the continued conservation efforts for the remaining threatened species.
Throughout the book, we do see a traveler in the background of the photos, and it felt like a missed opportunity to not have created some persona for that character. I’d love to see future work with that character being more involved in sharing information, which might make the learning more appealing to a younger audience that may not yet be super into animals. Overall, this is a wonderful book and would make a really thoughtful gift for animal/zoo lovers!
A brilliant book that takes the reader on a trip across the globe to meet some of the endangered species found in different countries and habitats, and exploring the different threats they are facing due to human induced climate change.
I was so impressed with the range of topics this book highlighted. Here are some to name a few: invasive species, illegal wildlife trade, palm oil plantations, coral bleaching, overfishing and noise pollution.
Trekking from the Himalayas to The Outback, all the way to the Amazon rainforest - this educational gem of a book has set a new time for children's climate books.
Thank you to NetGalley & Quarto for the DRC
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own opinions.
I must say, I never have never considered wild Hamsters. I can not believe they are near extinction. I really did enjoy this book and the reminder of the different ways humans can cause an extinction. It's a wonderful research tool to have on hand.
This is a perfect atlas for children. It breaks everything down by region and then reasons for animal endangerment within each region. It also includes tips for conservation so that we can help to heal the planet and lose less animals. I love how the colors of the illustrations match the regional climate.
This holds the place of best new book on endangered species for me! The atlas aspect is what puts it above the rest. Orienting the endangered species to a habitat adds depth to the conversation and helps the reader understand the why behind their endangered status. We learned so much from this book. It's beautiful illustrations added to the conversation and I liked that some of the endangered animals included were not ones I knew about. The box of facts on each animals added an additional layer of learning. I love books like there where you could sit down and read the main parts through or you could open it to a page and do a deep dive on that animal for the day. So many opportunities to learn and use the book again and again.
Brightly coloured and beautifully illustrated throughout, this would make a great book for creating some awareness in young children about animals that are in danger of dying out in various regions of the world. The causes of the endangerment is given but not what can be done by the individual (though sometimes implied.)
Content: Evolution is mentioned briefly.
4 stars from me.
I had so much fun reading this book, the story is so good and the illustrations were so well done and charming, there’s so many little details in every page that I couldn’t stop but be mesmerized by it all. I will definitely be recommending it! Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this early copy
Incredibly interesting and informative but also incredibly sad. Bold and colourful illustrations with some hard facts to swallow. For young animal lovers and the soft-hearted 🐻❄ 🐯
This book was beautiful, bold, and informative.
Bright and concise. The author goes over each region and displays all the animals boldly.
It really keeps the reader enticed to continue reading. This book is geared more toward children but as the reader, I can see the value of this informative for all age groups. I am a parent and showed this to my teenagers who found it informative and attractive. It held their attention for the entirety. They learned a lot, as did I.
I was unfamiliar with many of these endangered animals in many regions, so this shed some light on the teens and myself as well.
We all really enjoyed the illustrations and the way they captured attention but not overwhelmingly. (I notice sometimes with information-packed illustrated pages, they tend to seem overcrowded.)
It is clear and concise, fun, and easy to follow.
We read about the Amazon River Basin, Galapagos Island, and the list goes on.
The reasons for endangerment are discussed followed by actions to take. Climate change is brought up, as well as other thought-provoking topics. which is fuel to ignite important discussions for everyone enjoying the book.
I really liked this book. I thought it was a good intro book, and I liked how simple the artwork was. I didn’t find myself loving this book, or thinking it was an absolute necessity for our home (I have a 3 year old and a 12. Year old), however, I would check it out from the library.
I would love to see a different organizational style, and I felt somewhat confused by this one.
Such a cute book on endangered animals! The illustrations and typography are beautiful, so colorful. And each page is filled with fun, informative facts about the endangered animals organized by region of the world. I love that it helps readers learn about geography as well as the animals themselves. Also love the index and glossary in the back. My animal-loving kiddos will love this!
I received this arc via netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was an excellent voyage around the world, learning about endangered animals. The animals are grouped into habitats with each habitat given a two-page spread featuring one endangered animal and with a few other endangered animals from the same habitat given smaller sections around it. Each habitat is marked on the globe in the upper right which is a really nice detail and helped give context. Each animal has several interesting facts and statistics about it, its conservation status, and the reason(s) it is threatened.
Kiddo (9) loved it and listened rapt at bedtime, occasionally interjecting comments and questions.
The illustrations are colorful and engaging, and the animals show personality through their expressions.
The book finishes up with a section on extinct animals and a little bit about why each went extinct, and a final section on conservation as a job, various methods used, and how we shouldn't give up hope.
Kiddo and I both enjoyed it very much and I can see it appealing to 2nd-4th graders as a read-aloud and to slightly older kids who can read it to themselves. There's a lot of information packed into this book and I highly recommend it.
*Thanks to NetGalley, Quarto, and words & pictures for providing an early copy for review.
My 5-year-old really enjoyed this book. He loves animals and nonfiction and this atlas was a great combination of excellent pictures with detailed information. We’ve come back to it a few times since we downloaded it and he’s already asked if we can’t get a hard copy when it comes out for his collection.
That said, it is a book about endangered species and the author does not mince words about why many animals are endangered. You’ll read about humans killing animals and the impacts of global warming on habitats and animal populations. Reading it prompted some tough conversations about what drives people to treat animals cruelly and what we can do to protect them. Important, but parents of very sensitive kids, be prepared for those conversations.
This is a beautiful book. I love the way the book is separated into different areas. I think this helps children visualize where the animals live, seeing them all on the same pages. The colors and illustrations are bright and engaging. Definitely a great resource to teach children about endangered animals!
