I thought this was a super cute easy read book. This book is the perfect beach, poolside, or back porch read. I thought it would also be funny/cute for a girls book club.
The fun bright cover and exciting plot line gave me high books for this book, but it was a struggle to push through. The book was hard to connect too.
"The Breakup Vacation" is a cleverly crafted story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The plot was engaging and kept me hooked from start to finish. The characters were likable and relatable, adding depth to the narrative. What I loved most about the book is how it transported me back to the nostalgia of 2000s MTV – it was a delightful throwback in a good way.
The writing style was easy to follow, making it an effortless read. There were no particular scenes or moments that I didn't like, which is a testament to the author's storytelling skills. It's the kind of book you can breeze through in no time.
I would certainly recommend "The Breakup Vacation," although I'd note that it's more suitable for an adult audience. Overall, it's a fun story of a girls' trip that unexpectedly turns into a romance. If you're looking for an enjoyable and easy-going read, this book is a great
I have mixed feelings on this book. I did finish it quickly, and I liked how it was written and wanted to see how it ended. However, the content of the book was a bit political and racist at times. Things like "ACAB" and putting down white and asian people through sterotypes is not something I enjoy reading. The main charachter being down bad for a guy who is clearly playing games does nothing for feminism. The premise was something that could have been redeeming but all she did was find her way in ..........another man.
So unfortunately this did not live up to my expectations as the cover and summary made it so promising and felt it could have improved so many archs in the plot. Grace and her friends are younger for sure but the way they think or behave was a tad too immature and they were all a bit annoying/unlikeable. Grace being biracial and having some major thinking about it could have been better explained but her using her friends and being very manipulative made her thoughts less relevant. It could have been such a fun book but was a let-down for me!
Review:
Firstly, the cover is slightly deceiving. The characters on the cover look nothing like the characters described in the book. So that’s a LITTLE upsetting. But it’s a cute cover either way!
But getting passed that…
This is a cute rom com that really is like the description “Girls Trip meets Forgetting Sarah Marshall”. But it does fall short in some areas.
I love the relationship between Grace (the MFC) and her friends Tiff and Camille. They are fun and have great personalities. Their conversations and interactions are always fun. Sometimes it may be a little overdone for comedy’s sake but still fun nonetheless.
Josh is…Josh. I’m glad he’s the ex and I’m glad Grace meets Daniel so she can see she deserves better.
Speaking of Daniel, he’s the hottie with a body love interest she meets in Cancun. It has her questioning everything.
The two have great banter and lots of 🌶️🌶️ but I would have liked to seen more emotional development between the two rather than just sexual chemistry. However, I still think they are great together. Way better than her and Josh, haha.
Another key part of the story is that Grace is biracial. She’s white and Asian mixed. It is brought up several times that Grace compares herself to other Asians, including her friend Tiff. She never feels “Asian enough” in a way. I think that serious topic could have been delved into more but it wasn’t. However, her being mixed raced is something she can relate to with Daniel (the love interest) as he is also mixed asian. So it at least ties into the plot in that way.
This is a story of love, loss, self discovery and friendship.
It’s a fun light and quick read. I don’t always recommend 3 star reads but if you like romcoms this is one that you can check out.
I think this is the case where the cover and plot seemed promising, but the actual story and characters were a letdown. The characters were a huge disappointment to me. They were written in a way where I just could not connect any of them. Grace would say one thing, but her actions would lead the reader to believe the opposite. Her friends, especially Tiff, didn’t seem to have a grasp on reality and lived in a fantasy world where they thought they were acting like adults but came off childish and immature.
The plot lacked substance and development. There seemed to be a disconnect in the writing that made me left with the feeling of not understanding what I just read. There was no true character growth for Grace and at the end I felt like no true “lessons” were learned. I couldn’t feel the story and I truly would forget that these friends were on a trip to a tropical location. I couldn’t picture the scenes from this book because of its lack of vivid imagery.
I think this book had potential but the outcome couldn’t match the promising cover and plot. Thank you to NetGalley and MTV books for the ARC
Thank you to Netgalley for this early copy but unfortunately it was a DNF for me at 40%. It had the cutest description but had unlikable characters who were too immature and bratty for my tastes. Hoping to enjoy this author’s next book more!
this book unfortunately fell super flat to me. i didn't connect or find myself loving any of these characters. i found grace and her friends to be very annoying and childish. i know they are about to start their senior year of college, but it was just insufferable and i had a hard time finishing this one. i think the idea for the plot could've been executed a lot better. daniel was a great character but i just wanted more time with him and to learn more about him. it felt rushed.
This book was a struggle for me. I wanted to like it, and I felt like the premise had lots of promise! I just could not connect with the FMC Grace, and I felt so frustrated with her through a most of the book. It's hard to root for someone who keeps making one bad choice after another, and I felt like there was too much focus on her idiot ex. I really liked the MMC Daniel, but I felt like not enough emphasis was put on their romance in comparison to her romance with the ex.
Thanks to Simon and Schuster for my ARC!
I originally wanted to read this book based on the title and the description - I thought this would be the perfect book for me but unfortunately it fell short… way short.
I kept waiting for more back story, for the characters to be explained in more depth, or for some sort of reasoning to be given to let me know why the characters are the way that they are but everything seemed lack luster.
There was no story arch, no character archs, no build up or depth of any sort. Everything felt very surface level.
The only upside was it was easy to read and the words flowed easily enough that you could speed read through the book .... which also sort of sucks because there was nothing to focus on and no details you needed to remember.
Overall…. It was disappointing.
Grace is immediately dislikable. Plans a trip to follow her ex to Mexico all on her friends dime while lying and manipulating them into staying behind at the rental so she see her ex? Ick.
I appreciate the inside look of racism but her being a terrible friend is overshadowing everything for me.
Yeah I hate the FMC. It’s hard to resonate.
Ok so this book surprised me a lot, I actually loved it. It was a very quick read for me. Once I got a few chapters into it I didn’t want to put it down. Daniel and Grace 👌 tiff and Camille provide all the goody moments & really represented so many best friends. This was a wonderful read- thank you !
This book was such a messy, and drama filled book! But in the best way possible!! It was so much fun to read!
It is about Grace, who gets dumped by her boyfriend. She’s super upset about it and decides to plan a girls trip with her best friends to the place that her ex “just so happens” to be at too. Grace plans to win him back any way she can. But meeting Daniel makes that hard to do.
The Break Up Vacation was such a fun book to read. It really captures the drama in relationships and friend groups. And how to navigate through them.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Unfortunately it felt like not much happened. I appreciated the diversity of the characters and the discussion of the FMC's experience as a biracial white-Asian woman. I honestly might have DNFed if it were not an ARC; I wanted to give it a chance. Additionally, the characters read as much younger and less mature than they were written as. I did like the spice!
Absolutely fantastic plot! Could not put the book down once I began reading it. Cannot wait for it to be released. I will recommend it to everyone I know!
The Breakup Vacation by Anna Gracia presents an intriguing premise, but unfortunately falls short in execution. While the backdrop and setting promise a journey of healing and rediscovery, the pacing and character development leave much to be desired. Some plot points felt rushed and lacked depth, making it hard to resonate with the MCs emotions. Although Gracia's writing has potential, this particular book was a miss for me.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with an ARC through NetGalley. As always, my opinions are entirely my own.
I was worried that this one might be too-young-with-low-self-esteem for me, and wow, was I right.
Grace is a next level clinger. She's so hung up on a filmmaker guy that she's been dating for six months when he breaks up with her and starts dating the daughter of someone in the industry who gets a job for him in Cancun.
Her friends decide to cheer up with travel. The lure of a breakup vacation, only Grace plans it all solely in the hopes of getting her ex back - same destination, seeing ex as much as possible.
Until Grace decides to fixate on someone new who shows interest.
…
* While not every book needs all likeable characters to be a winner for me, I do require that characters have at least a few redeeming qualities. I found none here.
* The alcohol consumption in this one is concerning.
* Proclaiming the MFC a feminist when her behavior isn't is an issue for me.
* During my reading, I also had questions. The answers to which, I did not read in the book.
* Where was the much hoped for character development? Alas.
* A whole lot of stereotyping.
Unfortunately, for me this one was a waste of reading time.
Thank you to MTV Books and NetGalley for the DRC
AHH! I wanted to enjoy this but unfortunately it wasn't for me. It was honestly hard to connect with the characters and even Gracie. Obviously no one is perfect, but I could not help but find no sympathy for Gracie because she was just a messy gal all through out. The other characters could not spark some sort of connection to me either. I just wasn't convinced that the characters who were supposed to be love interests were actually in love/like each other.
what did just read?!?
The cover, the tile and even the description looked so good. That's what drew me in but the characters come off as young kids instead of college kids.
There was too much side stuff happening with the characters and not enough depth to them. They all seemed surface level and very very cliche. They're always drunk and there were so many pop, cultural references, and not enough actual storytelling, and progression to keep me interested
Overall, the story and characters lacked depth for me and that's why it's a two star
