A mother knows best.
Wow this was a super fun and quick read. It is a short book (only about 130 pages) and gets right to the point. It was thrilling and it really had me thinking what the outcome would be.
We follow our main character, Magnolia who is giving birth in the middle of a storm on an island and she’s alone.. But she’s a midwife so she’s got this right? She births a beautiful baby girl but when she wakes up.. she’s holding a baby boy.. but where is her baby?
What I Liked:
- Quick and Easy Read
- The Twist
- Unreliable Narrator (in a sense - I mean she just gave birth okay & has some birth trauma!)
What I didn’t like:
- Lots of mention of stillbirth
As someone who struggled with prenatal & postpartum anxiety, this was a little triggering to read due a big plot point in the story being that she is a loss mom. So I would definitely keep that in mind if you are sensitive to that kind of stuff, but all in all, this was a great read!
Thank you to Net Galley and Joffe for an e-ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review.
This story had me hooked from the moment I started - Not My Baby (formerly The Midwife’s Mistake) follows Magnolia the night she gives birth to her beautiful daughter home alone during a terrible storm.
After delivering a still born last year and spending time in a mental health facility as a result, no one (including her husband, midwife, and friends) believes Magnolia that when she says that the bouncing baby boy she is looking at the morning after her labour is not hers.
The story is fast-paced and takes place during Maggie’s first week post-partum. Its psychologically gripping as you cannot tell if Magnolia is simply an unreliable narrator or if someone really did switch her baby at birth.
I give the story 4.5 stars but rounded down because despite being already originally published under a different name, it still had some editing errors that seem a little unforgivable (a red car that is one sentence later now black, for example).
I loved this book, I literally didn't put it down till I finished it. A mother's love is the strongest in the wordl and a woman's and mother's gut against the world... I loved the plot full of twists. I highly recommend this book
