I liked this book more than I thought when I started reading it, and I cannot wait for the rest of Freya's story.
Taking a somewhat different approach to Norse saga's, some of Jensen's characters have magic bestowed upon them by the different gods at birth, the unfated of which the FMC, Freya, is one of the chosen. Freya is both a strong and weak MC throughout the book, which strangely makes her more believable. The will they won't they romance between Freya and Bjorn is, for me, whatever, but I can see how the steamy parts will appeal to many. I am more interested to see what Freya will do with her fate, especially given the ending of this book.
The world building is well done, the pacing is for the most part done well, and the writing kept me interested throughout the book.
Readers that enjoy fantasy, magic, Norse mythology, romance, and saga style stories will enjoy this newest work by Danielle L. Jensen.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for the eARC of this work in exchange for my honest review.
I am already a fan of Danielle L. Jensen so was super excited to get an early cope of A Fate Inked in Blood. I was engaged in the story from the first page. There was plenty of action and I really enjoyed all the elements from Norse Mythology. Lots of forced proximity if that is your jam. It is definitely insta-lust in the beginning but builds some angst along the way.
Reader beware it ends in a cliffhanger! I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book.
Check this one our romantasy fans.
Why is the world of the Vikings always so fascinating? Is it their desire for battle fame? The finicky and trickster gods conniving and changing fates? Only living for the protection of your family and surviving in a brutally harsh climate and raids? Maybe it’s because they actually existed and the Norse myths surround them is riveting. Whatever the pull, A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen (author of one of my favorite low fantasy duologies, The Bridge Kingdom) gives us a Viking romance treat with her latest installment in a new duology. I’ll be honest, based on how this book started, I was nervous this was going to be all insta-love/lust, which I’m not a fan of. While it does have insta-lust I could have done without (a personal preference), Danielle took us on a winding journey of tragedy, forbidden romance, love, and betrayals. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. While this story definitely feels like something you may have read before, and the reveals are obvious if you’re paying attention, if you’re a fan of Norse mythology, badass female main characters, and romance with some spice, you’ll probably enjoy this book a lot. The action is wonderful, and at no point was I bored, because the pace really doesn’t let up. There are some very minor spoilers below, so beware!
Things to Know:

We meet Freya, a young woman in a fishing village, who’s in a abusive marriage and I was pleasantly surprised when Vragi met his just end so rapidly. I was honestly cheering. Her friends and family though—what a bunch of horrific lowlifes. I honestly couldn’t believe how much they didn’t care about her or how selfish they were. Everyone in her life uses her, and I was just rooting for her to gain control over her own life. At the same time, I wanted to throttle her for her loyalty to people who deserved none.
Snorri is such a snore. I hate him. I mean, you’re supposed to. He and Stilgar a la Dune are the same person in a different font. Freya does or says literally anything, and he’s like, “OMG it’s a SIGN! It’s a TEST!” Except in this case, Snorri thinks he’s destined to be King and will plow over anyone and anything to get what he thinks he deserves. Rarely have I met a more annoying character so hungry for power. And his wife is just as bad.
Bjorn is the perfect book boyfriend (well…no spoilers). He’s protective in a “touch her and you die” way, he’s got banter, and we love a man who knows how to use a weapon, especially one gifted from the gods. It was a little convenient Snorri saw a ‘sign’ that Bjorn had to become her protector, but hey, we love a bodyguard trope, and this was done super well, without Freya losing her own initiative and capabilities.
The action sequences were amazing, and while I wouldn’t have minded a bit more worldbuilding surrounding the gods and their magic, Danielle writes in a very accessible way for people just getting into fantasy. Everything is super easy to follow. Side note: as a LOTR fan, I was absolutely loving what I assume is a nod to the paths of the dead moment, as Freya and Bjorn travel inside a mountain on another test. We are absolutely left on a cliffhanger steeped in betrayal, and I’ll be impatiently waiting for more answers coming in book two!
Quotes I loved:
“It’s hard to keep one’s wit when faced with a woman as beautiful as the sight of shores to a man who has been lost at sea.”
—
“You’ve never been alone…I will be at your back until I cross the threshold to Valhalla, Born-in-Fire, whether you want me there or not.”
—
“Don’t underestimate my tongue, Freya. Especially in the dark.”
This book is perfect for people who are already Danielle L. Jensen fans, as well as those looking for an engaging Viking fantasy romance . Danielle’s books are one’s I always recommend to get out of a reading slump, and A Fate Inked in Blood is no exception. Many thanks to Del Ray for sending me a review copy (all opinions are my own). I cannot wait to read the next installment and find out what the future holds for Freya, Born-in-Fire, and my favorite fire-axe-wielding book boyfriend, Bjorn! 4.25 stars

To be honest I'm getting very picky with the fantasy romance books I read and this book just wasn't for me. Nothing was inherently bad, I just wasn't vibing with it. The start was intriguing but ultimately the plot was moving too slow for me. I also just wasn't invested in Freya and Bjorn and so I didn't care about their romance. I thought the Norse-inspired setting was well done and immersive so if you're a fantasy romance fan and are looking for a story with a more unique setting than some of the other stories in this subgenre this will likely work well for you.
I also did enjoy Danielle L. Jensen's writing style from the bit that I read so I am interesting in trying The Bridge Kingdom series which I think will work better for me personally.
VIKINGS! I mean do I really need to say more?
Freya is married to an awful man and she's hiding a huge secret, she's the shield maiden, one of the unfated who's been marked by the gods and given a gift. When her secret gets out she finally has her wish come true, to fight as a true warrior, except she's forced into another unwanted marriage to the Jarl who claims she's his to control. Now Freya has to choose between protecting her family and her country or falling into the arms of her new husband's son, Bjorn, the charming and attractive unfated son of Tyr.
Plot: 4/5
Characters: 4/5
Romance: 4/5
I've been looking for a spicy vikings book for so long and this was everything I wanted. Freya and Bjorn have the perfect angsty, slow burn, forbidden will they won't they relationship. The plot is fast paced and entertaining with battle scenes and visits from gods. Freya grows throughout the book and learns to take real ownership of her decisions and begins to put herself first even with enemies all around. Bjorn was extremely understanding and supportive even when he knew Freya was making a bad decision. He allowed her the space she needed to develop and realize she could be whoever she wanted to be. He loved and supported her despite her flaws. I can't wait to see where the next book takes them.
There are a ton of good things and a ton of bad that I don't care too rehash. This was a novel that went in too many circles, felt so singular and the romance was too annoying for me to continue. As I've said a million times, I am not a romantasy girly and this book continued to reassure me that I am not. I think our MC was so whiny, asking too many questions and all the decisions she made were annoying as hell. I didn't like her so it took me out of the narrative a lot. A lot of the characters are dumb and rude for no reason. Idk I could go on but if you took the romance out this book you would have 2% of story left. And that doesn't sit right with me.
Although this is my least favourite series of hers, it was still good. Normally I am not a fan of insta love, but this was more insta lust that developed throughout the book into insta love. There was also enough deception and manipulation thrown in to make it interesting. I think why I don’t like it as much as her other series is because I find it hard to love viking books. I think it is the reliance on the gods and the unpredictability of that. Such as the gods can just decide to do something on a whim and change the whole plot. I will say for this one it was refreshing that the gods actually showed themselves and weren’t just beliefs. The twist was a bit predictable, but I am interested to see where it goes in the second book. Her friend and family were terrible people and I didn’t understand why she had so much attachment to them after they did dumb and betraying things over and over again. I am a bit annoyed that the fmc will probably forgive the mmc and just move on. I would give it 4.25 stars.
Really enjoyed this one! This is my second Danielle Jensen and I really preferred this one to Dark Shores. Looking forward to book 2!
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group- Ballantine for a eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was engaging from the beginning. The focus is on Freya's experience and self discovery. The use of prospective is unique in that we see the event through Freya's eyes and then learn the perspectives of others along with Freya later. There is back story and things we learn along with Freya which is the way to go in story telling.
My only complaint is the spicy scenes are placed in the story in illogical scenes for them. Example would be the characters would be hiding and need to be quiet and spice would happen.
Overall, an interesting read and I look forward to the next book in the series as this ends with an enticing cliffhanger.

I really enjoyed this book so much! You could really tell that DLJ has grown as an author since her Bridge Kingdom series started. I am so excited to see where this series goes, I still have so many questions!
The magic system was interesting and the idea that everyone is fated, except the children of gods is an interesting way to approach the system.
The FMC was torn between her selfish nature and wanting to protect others. It’s such a real struggle that I was rooting for her and frustrated by her at the same time.
The plot was fairly steady. I didn’t feel like there were many lulls in the action, even when there was a break from fighting. The twists and turns were foreshadowed well and left just enough for me to still be surprised by the nature of the ending.

This book has put this author hot on my radar. I’m going to need to consume other books they’ve written cause this was amazing. The characters, the lore around the Vikings and the plot line itself were so interesting and engaging that it was hard to put the book down. I had to force myself to put it down so I could sleep it was that good.
We meet Freya who is the wife of a cruel fishmonger that dreams of a better life in battle. Like her husband she is the child of a god but she keeps it secret due to her father forbidding her to speak of it. Betrayed by her husband her secret is exposed and she’s forced from her home. She’s taken by a Jarl who claims her as his shieldmaiden and we follow Freya as she battles with herself and those around her about the fate she was foretold would come.
I was never bored reading this and the world building was super interesting as it was grounded in Norwegian folklore. Freya, a strong minded woman is exactly what I love in female characters. There were moments where she was too self sacrificing that would get annoying for me but overall she’s such a strong main character. I enjoyed when she was fierce and hope we get more of that in the next book. Bjorn, the male main character was an instant hit for me and I loved their banter with each other and their dynamic overall.
I was worried in the beginning with the two of them mainly because I’m not a fan of instant love but it worked out quite well with this book. The romance actually grows gradually and has a good pace along with the overall plot.
The story itself had me all over the place and just when I thought I had it figured out it yanked the rug out from under me. The ending literally broke me and had me raging so much. I was livid reading those last few chapters and I eagerly await the next book and have such huge high expectations for it as this one blew me out of the water.
“You are mine, Born-in-Fire. Even if only the two of us know it."
This was my first Norse mythology and forbidden love viking book despite already being acquainted with some of the gods mentioned and I had a good time with it. The world building here didn’t feel difficult to get into but instead easily comprehensible at least for me and the author did great in laying it all out. I also have to note that I did put this on pause initially for a bit given that i wasn’t in the mood for it at the time (ignore how long) but i binged the last 35% like my life depended on it! The slow burn was so real here that when something finally happened I wasn’t left disappointed 🤭
“I used to dream only of fire and ash," he whispered, running a thumb over my cheek as I lifted my face to meet his gaze. "Now when I close my eyes, all I see is your face.”
Bjorn & Freya.. the banter, tension, push and pull and angst between them was everything. I was eating up all the crumbs we got of them throughout this until the very end. Bjorn was such a grumpy brute towards everyone but so soft & charming to freya and that type will always do it for me. I loved how protective he was of her (he was giving warrior bodyguard vibes) while also encouraging her how she could forge her own fate for the most part. And his power and axe? I couldn’t help but imagine a different even hotter version of Thor with how he’s described to look like which made my impression of him even better
"Her fate is inked in her blood," "It's carved in her bones. This power is Freya's destiny."
Now Freya, just as bjorn put it how the part of her that he hates the most is also the reason he loves her because same lol she wasn’t always given a choice in life with the family she was dealt with and those around her other than because she was the shield maiden. She was completely selfless and protective over those that didn’t deserve it and it equally angered and bothered me but i did admire her whenever she stood her ground as she had to navigate this world of men in control as they were even being the powerful warrior that she’s portrayed to be. I can see the potential for more character development on her end and can’t wait for what’s next for her
Aside from Freyas family and others, Snorri was completely delusional and egotistical in his quest to become king. this man was such a joke of a character and I need someone to really humble him in the next book
some thoughts:
The immediate mutual attraction between them kinda felt like insta-lust? but I considered her past circumstances with her ex husband so I excused it as it didn’t bother me given the connection that was there. At times it felt like nothing was happening yet things were happening if that makes sense. it was also slow in the middle to me but once it picked up I couldn’t put it down with everything that was happening that made it shift to a more thrilling experience
The cliffhanger and twists towards the end I was able to pick up on except one through earlier foreshadowing but had no idea how it was gonna unfold. it was still enjoyable and has me eagerly anticipating book 2 and all that’ll happen there. I’m also holding out hope for dual pov and some groveling
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review
Some other quotes:
“I wanted you the moment I first set eyes on you. I wanted you in Fjalltindr. I want you now, and tomorrow, and all the tomorrows, Freya.”
“Freya used to be a good and loyal woman."''She still is. You're just no longer worthy of her loyalty.”
“Not all scars we earn are skin-deep, Freya Born-in-Fire.” “There is no less honor in them.”
The premise of this book was really exciting to me, but ultimately I found it a bit boring and I’m little disappointed in the lack of detail and immersion considering that Vikings and their culture are so interesting. It feels like the author had a bunch of setting options for a romantasy novel on a spinning wheel, and it just so happened to land on “Viking”.
*Mild spoilers* - although this technically happens in the very beginning - but the scene where Freya and Bjorn first meet and he offers to kill her husband for her and it’s really suggestive and horny and eye rolling right off the bat? What if we had changed the subject to “want me to kill your husband so that you’re no longer miserable?” instead of immediately trying to barrel the reader over with how much the two leads super hardcore wanna jump each other. Also, I would say this book is a slower burn. Why write your characters as so shallowly horny for each other right off the bat if you’re going to write a slower pace? I’m really burnt out on the emotionally one dimensional sex I’m seeing more and more in romances as of late.
I’m seeing other reviewers for this book use the term “insta lust” in reference to a trope and ya know maybe that’s just not for me, I guess.
All that being said, this book sold out immediately at my store and the first edition is physically lovely. It didn’t fully work for me but I can see how fans of the author’s other books or just casual romantasy fans might really enjoy this, so. Different strokes different folks
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
GIVE ME THE NEXT BOOK AND GIVE IT TO ME NOW!
Holy crap. As a Vikings/The Last Kingdom fan… THIS ATE AND LEFT NO FREAKING CRUMBS! Danielle, this may possibly be your best work yet and I’m a die hard TBK fan. Freya is a badass and the reveal in the end was 😱🤯 I love Bijorn and want to kick him in the nuts at the same time but all I can say is that man has the biggest heart ever.
I will not know peace until I have the next book in my hands.
"You are mine, Born-in-Fire. And I am yours, even if only the two of us know it."
When I tell you I devoured this.. I DEVOURED THIS. I was sucked into this story from the get go. I don't think that I had ever read a book about vikings, but I can tell you right now this won't be my last. I truly loved the way that the author was able to capture the beliefs, views, and out look from the vikings. Even the battle scenes were done so well. I truly felt like I was watching a move in my head with the way the author was able to detail things.
Bjorn is everything. that man can do no wrong in my eyes haha. But he did have his own flaws and that shows that they are real. Bjorn and Freya.. their banter and tension throughout this book was top. notch and done really well. I loved seeing their characters grow and learn.
The ending of this though.. dang it! cannot wit for the next book. This was a rollercoaster and good one at that.
This was fantastic! Thank you SO MUCH to Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC. I absolutely loved this. I cannot wait to go out and buy the physical book because it looks beautiful. This story was so compelling from page 1 that I could not put it down! I flew through this story. There was never a dull moment in the plot. I loved all the characters. Even though Freya's stubbornness irritated me at times, I really loved her arc from fisherman's wife to warrior. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and can't wait to see where the story goes!
Freya is trapped in a loveless marriage, longing for the heat of battle. One day her world is turned upside down and she has the chance to get everything she dreams of, but at what cost?
This series introduction could easily be the best book of 2024. Filled with action, magic, and plot twists. Jensen has opened the door to a world of wonder.
I loved this book from start to finish! I loved the main characters, Freya and Bjorn. They were well written and I loved their chemistry from the first page they met! The romance was a nice slow burn and it had a little spice. The world building and the magic that came from the gods were both interesting. There was lot of action and twist that had me on the edge of my seat! After that ending, I can’t wait to read the next book!
This book is unbearably slow, the concept is really interesting but it is is not hold my attention at all
