I was immediately intrigued by the idea that this was based off of Norse mythology! I found myself drawn to learning about these gods and the mythology surrounding them.
I will say I hate love triangles and while this isn’t a true love triangle I hated the idea that she was promised to Bjorn’s dad. Ewww! Can’t wait for the next!

From snowy hilltops and icy fjords, Jensen crafts a new romantic Viking-inspired fantasy—full of thrilling action, heart-pounding twists and turns, and a simmering forbidden love story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Freya has always dreamed of fighting alongside her brother as one of her jarl’s esteemed warriors, protecting their people from any outside threats. But, when she finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage, she has almost given up all hope in her childhood dream—until fate intervenes in the form of a mysterious, handsome stranger—who helps spark the magic Freya has kept meticulously hidden. Now, she must fight for her survival, her family’s future, and her heart.
Jensen does it again and creates an all-encompassing fantasy, epic in scale, action, and plot. She weaves together an exciting new tale in her signature style of combining fast-paced action, an intriguing plot, deeply layered characters, and a passionate romance, making me as a reader, fall aimlessly for this new story.
With all of the thrilling elements Jensen brought to this story, the romance was a big highlight. Add witty banter with brewing tension and a dash of the forbidden, and I am completely invested in this love story. My favorite part had to be Bjorn *swoon*! Jensen writes her love interests so impeccably to challenge and truly see the strong heroines they fall for, and Bjorn was literally on fire most of the book with his sarcastic remarks and passionate demeanor. And speaking of strong heroines, I’m excited to see how Freya’s journey will continue.
If you are in the mood for a fantasy escape, definitely keep this read in mind!
4.5/5

***POTENTIAL SPOILERS***
A Fate Inked in Blood brought me to a whole new world I could get lost in. I could visualize the characters, the weapons, the gods. What a great fantasy to follow!
Freya is our main character, who starts the novel a fishmonger’s wife but has always dreamed of fighting as a warrior. Her husband is abusive and cruel, but she’s accepted that fate in order to protect her family…until her true identity as a shield maiden, being born with gods blood is revealed. She’d been told her entire life to hide her gods blood and powers because a seer in the past had said she’d unite Skaland under a king. After she’s found out, her journey begins. She weds Jarl Snorri but wants his son, Bjorn, who also has gods blood in his veins. Through trials and battles, Freya struggles to understand her destiny and who controls it.
I loved all the Norse influences and mythology throughout this novel. The battles scenes were so descriptive I could easily see this world and what was happening. I also enjoyed to relationship between Bjorn and Freya, the angst and want, the witty quips, the visual descriptions. While I got lost entirely in this world, and loved Freya’s character, her protectiveness over loved ones, her belief that she wasn’t worth war and death, towards the end, she started to drive me crazy. I understand being torn between hard decisions, the back-and-forth between hard choices, but right up until the end of this book, she would turn hot and cold. Even after we get a few things we want, a few decisions are taken away because of outside influences making certain scenarios happen, and she is finally realizing she doesn’t have to do something just because she thinks a man is supposed to control her, she STILL would regress.
I can’t wait to continue the series, but Freya needs to mature a little bit more and think for herself.

Holy shit this book y’all! I couldn’t put it down! I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about Danielle’s books and now I know why. Her writing style is phenomenal and will keep you hooked!
I loved everything about this book. The story, the romance, the characters, all of it was incredible. The banter had me rolling on the floor while my husband looked at me like I was crazy. The Norse mythology elements added an amazing touch to the story as well.
This book will definitely be in my top favorites of the year. Thank you so much to Del Rey and Netgalley for the e-arc!
The fiery romance, compelling characters, engaging twists and turns, and absorbing world of Danielle L. Jensen's A Fate Inked in Blood kept me up all night. Freya's courageous and daring heart make her a heroine readers can't help but root for and Bjorn's belief in Freya and his unwavering support of her are *chef's kiss.* The back-and-forth banter between Freya and Bjorn create both steamy tension and such an irresistible dynamic that always left me wanting more.
The inspiration that Jensen drew from Norse mythology as well as some of my favorite components and tropes of romantasy -- forbidden romance, interesting world building, divine powers, one horse, and explosive battle scenes -- make for such a riveting and fantastic read that many fantasy/romance lovers will thoroughly enjoy. I couldn't put A Fate Inked in Blood down and I am so excited for the continuing of Freya's journey in the second installment in the Saga of the Unfated series!
Thank you to the author, NetGalley, and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for this ARC copy.
Having Gods blood in your veins means to have your fate unwritten by the Norns. Being unfated is viewed as a blessing, but is it a curse? Reading the journey that Freya goes on to discover herself and the prophecy is a rollercoaster. Who controls her fate? Herself? Jarl Snorri? Bjorn? The gods?
The banter between Bjorn and Freya is fantasic. It made the chemistry between them seem a little more real. Getting to see others' characters with Gods blood was an aspect that made it more interesting. The world building was fantastic. The only thing I would say I didn't like was how Freyas' family treated her. It made no sense to me. They didn't really have a good reason for it besides driving the ending. It didn't feel believable. The sex scenes were sizzling. I was not expecting that ending, though. I can't wait for the next book!

What can I say? I devoured this book. I posted a couple of stories right away when I started this book because I could not keep the emotions at bay. Page 4 had me reeling already.
This revolves around Norse Mythology and Scandinavian history. There are terms and gods that I needed researching in so keep your Google closeby when reading the first few parts. The plot/premise and conflict source were all simple enough but very solid. I liked that a lot actually. It didn't need to be so complicated. The writing style, actual missions/adventures and character interactions shined through, and they are what makes this book amazing and beautiful.
Freya (FMC) was sassy, sharp-tongued, but she was depicted as the classic "woman" from history- weak and just a wife. But unlike other female heroins I've read before, her transition to being strong was gradual, realistic. Not frail then immediately badass. The character growth was really good. There's also a mystery of her god parentage since she seems to present differently than what she originally was supposed to be.
I will talk about the romance. The banter and flirting between Freya and Bjorn started early on. Page 4. And it was peppered throughout the book. It didn't leave me wanting for their interactions for there were plenty. I was giggling, kicking, squealing and dying. Forbidden romance. Slow, but very VERY good burn. And usually I skim over the smut. I did not this time. Read every single word. Yes it's spice but the way it was written was not in anyway off-putting.
Chapter 35, with so little pages left to finish, bomb after bomb were dropped. Revelation after revelation! I knew it was going to leave me with a massive cliffhanger. It actually ended on a good spot. But knowing what was revealed, it did not curb my hunger for the sequel. I am upset. Nobody talk to me over the next few days while I recover. Or I might not recover until book 2 is in my hands.
Five stars. But I'm extremely frustrated and upset.
It’s nice to see a new fantasy series meet what I consider the level of epic: Epic in story, epic in scale, and epic in feel. You can’t just call a fantasy book or series epic and call it a day. “Epic” means something: Spanning time, lands, battles, revelations, marriage, deaths, betrayals, and more. Epic means gods, monsters, humans, magic, and a greater sense of purpose are involved for everyone in the story. A Fate Inked in Blood may be a spicy (but not too spicy, and definitely not smutty) Viking romantasy, but it’s also the start of a very good epic fantasy series.
Danielle L. Jensen isn’t an unknown name for me, though I’ve never read her books before. The cover, title, and author name of this book all caught my attention when I saw it on NetGalley. Even though I’m usually not down for Viking fantasy, I was intrigued enough to request it. I’m so glad I did, because this was well worth the read (sadly, I’m still not converted on the Viking thing).
The best thing about this book is our FMC, Freya, who has a mercurial temper mixed with a compassionate nature. The second best thing about this book is Freya’s relationship with Bjorn, the son of her husband. Bjorn is Freya’s constant and the one willing to risk her ire when her compassion risks her own safety. Their chemistry is insane from the moment they meet on the page and every time they are alone together their banter is a delight to read.
Jensen has done a wondrous job writing a Viking fantasy world that’s robust with well-explored magic, rich mythology, expressive world building, and fascinating characters. The storytelling is artful and the writing is compelling. I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment!
I was provided a copy of this title by NetGalley and the author. All thoughts, opinions, views, and ideas expressed herein are mine and mine alone. Thank you.

I received an advanced readers copy of this book a few months ago, and I'm mad at myself for just now getting to it.
The story had me hooked right from the beginning. VIKINGS. Honestly, that's all that needs to be said. Mostly kidding. The storyline was extremely compelling thanks to the Norse mythology undertones. The magic system was new to me as I had never read anything like it. I'm intrigued with how people were blessed by the God's and would like to take a deep dive into that.
Freya's character got stronger with every chapter. We love a strong FMC, but what made her character strong was not brute strength. She was selfless and kind. We saw her battle herself and her own inner demons. She took it upon herself to care for people who didn't deserve it, and we get to watch her take control of her own fate.
Bjorn (again VIKING ) was a perfect MMC. Protective, grumpy, and somehow so sweet. The witty banter between him and Freya really brought their story to life and made me smile A LOT. Bonus: he says the most absolute dreamy things and I. AM. HERE. FOR. IT.
The reason I didn't give it a full five stars is because I did predict most of the plot twists pretty early on in the book which I usually don't like. However, even knowing what was to come, I was fully engrossed. I devoured this book.
It does finish off on a bit of a cliff hanger, and I'm so excited to continue the series. I think this book will become pretty popular.

I would also like to add that pronouncing these names is not easy, but on Danielle L. Jensen's website, you will find the audio pronunciation guide. I found it extremely useful and love that I was able to read them properly because of it.
A woman bound in an unwanted marriage finds her secret, that she has god's blood in her and that she is secretly a prophesied shield maiden, revealed and that she is sold off to another power hungry king... except she is now falling in love with her new husband's son and the lives of thousands rest on her shoulders. Freya is stuck in an unwanted marriage, spending her days gutting fish and her nights with a man she doesn't want any part of... all so her family can reap the wealth of it while she endures. Yet she dreams about becoming a warrior and when her husband betrays her to the region's jarl and sells her off to him... she now finds herself in a fight to the death against the jarl's son, Bjorn. To survive she is forced to reveal her secret: she possess a drop of a goddess's blood, which makes her a shield maiden with magic capable of repelling any attack. There is a prophecy that states that such magic found in a shield maiden will unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath the one who controls tbhe shield maiden's fate. The fanatical jarl believes that he is destined to rule Skaland and forces Freya to marry him (despite him being the age of her father and him already having two other wives). He binds her to him with a blood oath and orders his son Bjorn to protect her from their enemies. Freya must now learn to fight and survive and control her magic while enduring tests from the gods as well as the worst test of all, her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. Freya must manage her lust for Bjorn, but it gets harder and harder when she spends so much time next to the charming and kind hearted viking. Can she find a way to survive the war and the people who want to use her while falling for the one man she can't have... or was she doomed from the start? This is the first book in the duology and it had a lot going for it. I found the world to be interest and I liked the romance my only big issue was Freya herself, all her decisions had me wanting to tear my hair out in frustrations. If you can get past some of her decisions then I definitely think you'll have a fun time with it. This is definitely for fans of shows like Viking. Freya kind of reads like an 18 year old girl who doesn't really have a backbone but is learning for the first time in her life. I am excited to see where the next book goes and how it ends the duology.
*Spoiler: Freya is married to Snorri (the jarl) and Yvla (Bjorn's step mom) binds them in blood so she has to obey them ( she does this and agrees to it as long as Snorri never sleeps with Freya). Freya falls for Bjorn and he falls for her, (insta love). Freya discovers that her family has always used her and doesn't really care that much for her but she still cares for them despite it. She also discovers that Bjorn was held as a hostage by the other jarl Harld and that Snorri believes harld killed Bjorn's mom Saga ( Harld continues to deny this). Turns out Bjorn's mother is still alive and that Bjorn views Harld as his actual father and that Snorri tried to kill him and his mother. Bjorn wants revenge against Snorri. ( Before she finds out all fo this Freya runs away with Bjorn and fakes their deaths and they confess their loves to each other). When Freya finds out the truht about Bjorn she gets mad (like seriously girl this is what you choose to get mad over/?? It's not even your thing to get mad over he wasn't even using you he was trying to save you and then she kills a bunch of Harld's men because she's angry (she's so irritating). Then bit ends with her mad at bjorn despite him telling her he loves her and he just wants to get revenge for his mom who is alive and that he only ever wanted to protect Freya and avenge his mom ( seriously he is in the complete right).

*4.5 stars rounded up*
Maybe one of my top fantasy reads of 2024!? Quite possibly this will be in the running!
With the massive success of The Bridge Kingdom, I wasn’t sure if Danielle L. Jensen could deliver another amazing fantasy read. Spoiler: she did.
What I liked:
- Vikings!!
-Badass FMC
-Gods meddling in human affairs
-one horse trope
-the chemistry between Freya and Bjorn was *chef’s kiss*
-Bjorn’s cocky, flirtatious attitude.
-Magic system
-Forbidden love
Altogether, the banter between the FMC and MMC made this book. It presented a strong opener and continued throughout the book nicely; fizzled out a bit when the tensions grew stronger which felt organic!
*******************************
What I disliked:
These are all the reasons why I didn’t rate 5 stars because it didn’t sit well with me.
-The relationship between Freya and her family:
It just didn’t seem…believable to me, I guess? I am not sure how else to describe that. It seemed like the mistreatment was over exaggerated in the book JUST to piss off the readers.
-The mistreatment of Freya throughout the book:
Again, it just didn’t seem believable. I really feel like it was excessive and over-the-top just to enrage the reader. It didn’t make for an engaging dynamic. It could’ve stopped with the abusive fishmonger husband, but then Snorri came along, and then Ylva, and then her family started showing more and more abusive tendencies. It felt like everyone was out to get her, which I get was the idea, but it just felt SO unnecessary. Ylva was just a straight up meanie; it would’ve been better if we saw an unlikely partnership between the two or something…but maybe I just don’t like two women pitted against one another.
- Freya’s Savior Complex:
She constantly was putting everyone before herself- even when she KNEW those people took advantage of her!? I better see Freya out for blood the next book.
-Freya’s quick switch to losing control:
Idk…it felt rushed and a bit over-the-top.
**********************************
Some elements of the ending were predictable but the ultimate ending!? Omg…we need book two NOW.
Thank you NetGalley and Del Rey Books for the ARC! All opinions are my own.
I honestly cannot convey how much I LOVED this book. It was such a new take, for me at least, and it was really refreshing to have something different in the fantasy/romance genre. Ever since Vikings and The Last Kingdom gained TV popularity it was only a matter of time before a brilliant author added some magic and gave us a story that would absolutely SUCK US IN!
Danielle did an amazing job of building a beautifully descriptive world, flawed/struggling characters, and a magic system that was unique but still easily understood by the reader.
The slow burn and tension was delicious and kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how these characters were going to handle the burning heat between them and the complicated world they were navigating. When we finally got the spice, it was definitely SPICIN!
A must read, I will be purchasing a physical copy FOR SURE.
This book had me hooked from the first chapter and I loved every moment of it. I loved the fantasy and nordic mythology elements in this book. It was well written and the world was well developed and brought me right into Skaland. But beyond the fantasy the best thing about this book in my opinion in Freya, our fmc, and her relationship with Bjorn. Freya is powerful, full of hate against the world and her circumstances, and also full of love and care for her closest friends and family. I loved watching her come into her power in this book and how it also changes her emotionally. I also loved her forbidden romance with Bjorn. You can feel the tension between them and all I was waiting for was for them to finally admit that they liked each other, and it was better than expected. They also had great banter which made me root for them so much more. Although with the way things left off in this book, I need the second one immediately and cannot wait to continue!
Overall, this was a great start to a Nordic inspired fantasy romance that I can’t wait to continue and highly recommend!

The Bridge Kingdom series from Danielle Jensen is one of my FAVORITES from the romantasy genre, so when she announced a new series based off Norse mythology I was THRILLED! Danielle never disappoints with her stories and I found this to be an entertaining start to this series!
I’ve not read much Norse Mythology, so was really excited to get into something new for me! The premise was interesting, with everyone already having their fate set except for the few people, who have a drop of gods blood making their fates unknown They also have some magical abilities because of this. The FMC and MMC both are some of these god-touched people, with different prophecies foretold about them and mysteries about their past. The magic system and world building in this series wasn’t super complex, which made this book a pretty quick and easy read.
I loved the MMC, Bjorn. He is SOOO HOT. This man is the Nordic man of my dreams. He is protective, he is broody, he has a flaming axe. Oh did I mention he is the FMC’s husband’s son? From the get-go when we are introduced to him, he intrigued me. He has such a mysterious back story and the spice he brings to the table is top notch! The tension and banter was so much fun too!
I will say, this one was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and while I enjoyed it, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. From having read previous Jensen books, I was expecting a little bit more on the world building side of things, especially as Nordic theme is new for her and me. This book was a bit heavier on the romance side than the fantasy side, with less world building than I expected. Had the mix been a bit more even and what I’m used to from Jensen, I think that would have helped my rating be higher.
Also, while I liked the FMC, she did make dumb decisions frequently and gave me ANXIETY. I wish she was a little more badass-y and a little less rash decision-y. The plot and twists were also pretty predictable (as in, I predicted everything that happened). I’m hoping we get more from the FMC in the next book and that everything isn’t quite so obvious, but overall I think there is potential with her character and storyline.
Overall, a solid first installment to the new series! The ending did have a bit of excitement, and it ended on a cliff-hanger so I am excited to see where this goes next!
I received an ecopy of this book from NetGalley and a print copy from Del Rey in exchange for an honest review.

A Fate Inked in Blood follows god-blessed shield maiden Freya as she is married to a power-hungry jarl who intends to use her power for his own selfish gains.
I should start off by saying that romantasy is incredibly hit or miss for me. Sometimes I find it enthralling, and sometimes I find it incredibly embarrassing. Much of that comes down to its merits as a fantasy, the characters' chemistry, and certain writing choices in the spicy scenes. In this case, it was a bit of a miss. I realized reading this book that I'm not sure that Norse-inspired fantasy is something I can get into super easily, mostly because I feel like I need a lot of foundational aspects of the world's history laid out for me in order to totally understand what's going on. This fantasy didn't go out of its way to explain things, which on the one hand left room for more plot, but on the other hand definitely made me feel like I was playing catch up. That's mostly a me problem, so it's ultimately fine, but it was a piece I struggled with.
Beyond that, I just did not feel like our romantic leads had chemistry. In retrospect, I think much of that has to do with the way this book ended, because there was just something about the vibe the whole time that felt like there was no other conclusion than where this book concluded. Even so, what's the point of a romantasy if I can't buy into one half of the romantic pairing? Additionally, I felt like many of the spicy scenes in this book were more embarrassing to read than enjoyable. The spice was notably absent for the first half of the book, and when it did happen, a lot of the language used -- particularly the word of choice for Freya's nether regions -- left me feeling an odd mixture of detached and icky.
I do think that there is some merit to this book, and I think most die-hard romantasy readers will be head over heels for it, especially with the way it ends. I'm certainly intrigued enough to want to pick up book 2, which is definitely a win for me. In all, I think this will be a hit with its audience, but it was very much a mixed bag for me.
Let me start out by saying I'm a huge fan of Danielle's writing. Anything she writes, I'm going to read it. I highly encourage everyone to run and read this epic fantasy.
This world is incredible. Full of baddy Vikings and a baddy FMC. The lore is chefs kiss. I immersed myself fully into this world and found it so hard to leave. Prepare yourselves for an epic cliffhanger.
Freya is so well written. I love how Danielle writes her female characters. They're so strong, warriors. I fell for her compassion. I related to her need to protect those that can not protect themselves. Her epic voyage to escape her fate is truly magical. Another character that will forever be part of my heart.
Now for that spice...Bjorn can whisper sweet nothings to me any day. The tension built between him and Freya is perfection. I chuckled out loud so many times from their verbal sparring. I loved that every spicy moment was a battle of wills. I can't wait for everyone to meet him.
Rounded up from 4.25 stars
I am still in shock that I got to read this before the publication date. I loved Danielle Jensen’s The Bridge Kingdom and couldn’t wait to dive into this new series around Norse mythology. Thank you to Del Rey and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review!
A Fate Inked in Blood follows Freya, who escapes a terrible marriage to end up married (and not excited about it) to another man who believes that she is the woman promised to unite Skaland under one ruler. Freya is god’s blessed - she possesses magic from a drop of a god’s blood. The only problem is that her new husband’s son, Bjorn, is not only more attractive but also the person his father assigns to train and guard Freya. Bjorn is also god’s blessed. The two of them fight the attraction between them as they continue to prove themselves worthy of the power granted to them through harrowing challenges and battles.
I enjoyed the world-building and would love to see it developed even more in book 2, and I loved learning more about Viking or Norse mythology. I haven’t read a fantasy book based in that period, and it was great to see another badass FMC featured in a book. Bjorn’s character was a fierce warrior who also had a soft side, and I loved that he believed in Freya’s ability and didn’t shy away from her warrior self. He was gruff and moody, but also had some good banter in there.
I also appreciate that Jensen is providing readers with an audio guide to the correct pronunciation of the words in the book, and that a native speaker will be reading the audiobook. I’ll have to get the audiobook now and listen to the book again.
My only real issues with the book were that Freya was always biting the inside of her cheek (the repetition was grating for me, personally) and that part of the plot was easily guessed. But I finished this book and immediately wanted to know when the next book in the series is going to be published because I needed to read it yesterday 😂.
Check the TWs because there are some graphic battle scenes.

Whew y’all. This Norse folklore was hot, spicy, and oh so magical. I felt like after we hit a certain chapter the intrusive thoughts won and all the spice happened every chapter. The audio was great and I could read Jensen all day.
First, I want to talk audio. A big reason I love audio is for the correct pronunciations. Nina Yndis was so good. I felt all the tension, the fear in Freya, but I also got those pronunciations I needed! Highly recommend the audio (but definitely with headphones cause spice. I was gardening and I know my neighbors threw in an extra prayer for me yesterday)
The magic system/goddess powers are perfection. I loved hearing about each god and what their children would possess. The prophecies kept me guessing true meanings, and I just got sucked in. I’d say the last 1/4 of the book was so action packed, I couldn’t put it down.
Book 1 in the Saga of the Unfated, I am itching for Book 2, even though this releases tomorrow!!
Predict: A fate inked in..
A fate inked in the last chapter of the book. 😂
I originally was intrigued by the synopsis of this book and was not disappointed. Set in a Viking community some children are born with a drop of a gods blood in their veins and this gives them powers. We follow one such child Freya, who has been married to a god child....who truly acts like a child and is all around not a good guy, but she keeps her own powers hidden. The Jarl of her community received a prophecy that she would be the one to make him King and so once she is found out we are set on our path.
The characters of Bjorn and Freya are well thought out and written, their flirtation which starts at the very beginning can be a bit overpowering at times but you have to go in knowing it is a romantasy novel. Danielle L Jensen even did a fantastic job at writing the Jarls wife and made her more than just a caricature,
The magic system was fascinating, how these children come to be and the pros and cons of these gifts, but as we see with the first husband of Freya...gods powers don't change your true nature.
Spice is 3 out 5
