“Not all scars we earn are skin-deep, Freya Born-in-Fire.” “There is no less honor in them.”

I’ll be honest, I knew I was going to enjoy this book, before even reading the first page. When one of my favorite authors announced she was writing a Norse inspired Fantasy Romance, with a shield maiden named Freya, as the main character… I immediately preordered it. But I wasn’t expecting this to have everything I could ever want in a book, and some how even more.

“I will be at your back until I cross the threshold to Valhalla, Born-in-Fire, whether you want me there or not.”

The banter, with absolutely ridiculous humor (I’m pretty sure I actually snorted a few times), to the phenomenal Norse mythology elements, made me devour this book. I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, and fell asleep clutching my kindle, because I just couldn’t put this book down. And don’t even get me started on the incredible sexual tension, the mutual pining, forbidden love, enemies to friends to lovers, SHIELD WALLS, and the revenge plot.

“In our world, power is most often achieved with violence.”

This entire book was a thrilling adventure, with exceptional pacing, that barely gave me a moment to catch my breath. Considering the fact I was punching the air and yelling “F*CK YEAH” by chapter 2, I knew this was going to be great. The rage and absolute need for retribution I felt from these characters, was noticeable very early in the story. But the devotion, determination, bravery… and yet, heart breaking self doubt, you see through especially Freya’s perspective, made her one of my favorite and most relatable characters I’ve seen in a while. And Bjorn… he’s got BVDE, and I fell in love with him the second he stepped out of the fjord.. The tension and respect between these two, was a delicious slow burn at its finest.

“Freya used to be a good and loyal woman.””She still is. You’re just no longer worthy of her loyalty.”

If you’ve read The Bloodsworn Saga by John Gwynne, and loved it… but thought what if this was sexier? Or possibly you’ve enjoyed, another one of my favorites Wolf of the Sands by Amy Kuivalainen, or maybe you love the show, Vikings?!? This book is for you. It’s filled with strong female characters, epic Norse mythology, and although quite different writing styles, they all feature characters with “gods blood” or that have been touched by the gods. I truly think this is a phenomenal book, and have already preordered the hardback edition with gilded edges and a bunch of other stunning extras, from my local Indie bookstore.

“They say being given the blood of a god is a gift,"I whispered. “But it's a curse.”

Thank you to Danielle Jensen, and Random House Publishing Group, for the opportunity to read this ARC from NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.

P.S. I absolutely recommend a glass of dry mead while listening to Hozier’s “Blood Upon the Snow”, after finishing this incredible book.

Thank you to NetGalley for the arc of the book!

I truly enjoyed reading this book! To start this book has a little bit of everything. Captivating characters that you easily grow attached to? ✅
World building and lore that isn’t overwhelming? ✅
Tons of action? ✅
Romance✅
Twists and turns?✅

All of the characters within this book, whether they are the protagonist or antagonists are phenomenal! Freya, who is the fmc, is incredibly strong given everything she has to deal with. Her character is easy to get behind and follow. Beyond the amazing characters, the use of Norse mythology is spectacular! As someone who doesn’t know much on the topic, it was really accessible. I would also argue that the world building is quite minimal within in the book. There is enough to set up the use of the Norse mythology, yet it wasn’t so heavy it took away from other aspects of the book. This book was full of twists and turns! While reading I had to face the brutal reality that things were not always as they seemed. The ending of this book truly embodies that!

I cannot stress how amazing this book was! The characters, lore, and twists are what made this book. I’m definitely going to go check out some more of Danielle L. Jenson’s books now!

A Fate Inked in Blood, by Danielle L. Jensen, brings readers on a journey through a world of Norse mythology and fantasy. Book #1 of the Saga of the Unfated series, brings together components of fate, romance and betrayal. If you liked Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla on TV then this is the book for you.

I rate this book a 4.5.

If you aren’t huge into fantasy, this is a good start for you. The magic system is easy to understand and the world is very realistic. Within the first few chapters you are pulled in, conflict from the start.

What I loved most, Bjorn and Freya’s banter and tension, and the pacing was spot on, never a dull moment.

My only issue with the book is I think there was so much going on and being fast paced that details were missed.

Thank you, NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Danielle L. Jensen has done it again. She absolutely captivated me.
Her Norse inspired novel kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.
I’m a big Thor fan and this played right into my wheel house.
From the star I was rooting for Freya to escape her abusive husband but he just kept getting more and more despicable. Freya is witty and all around a well written character. You feel her pain and her drive to achieve more. Be more than just a fish gutting housewife. She’s a born warrior.
I absolutely recommend this book.

I received this book from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Very nice writing. Everything felt believable and the main character was caring without being weak which can be a hard balance to strike. Lovers of Fourth Wing will love this book. It is reminiscent of H.M. Long's "Hall of Smoke" but with more romance.
4.5 stars

5 STARS!

What a ride this was! Jensen draws you in and spits you out, and I'd do it all again. Her writing is easy to read for those just getting into fantasy, with a load of romance that has you invested the whole way through. The use of Norse mythology is done in a digestible way for anyone to jump into. Don't forget the plot, because she does not spare you a moment to breathe. In the best way possible! It is action-packed the whole way through!

Freya is my new favorite vengeful female! Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantasy with some romance!

Pretty good. I enjoyed the characters and the unique plot. I love the strong fmc. Pretty predicable but still pretty good.

This. book.

If you’re someone who isn’t sure about fantasy, this book is for you. If you’re someone who loves fantasy, this book is for you. The world building is so digestible, the magic system is easy to understand, and the conflict is immediate. Not a single part of this story dragged and I was slinging a thousand theories around to figure out which direction Freya’s fate would go. This was my first Norse mythology book and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest. The tension between Freya and Bjorn is just *chef’s kiss* and their banter was EVERYTHING. I’ve already preordered my copy for the February release and can’t wait to see what happens next. 4.5⭐️

Thank you to Del Rey books, Danielle L. Jensen, and NetGalley for the eARC!

Despite my low rating, I have the feeling this book is going to be very popular. I wouldn't call this a "fantasy romance"; A Fate Inked in Blood belongs in the "Booktok" genre. As reading has increased in popularity over the past few years, a new genre of novels that focus heavily on tropes and catchy one-liners has grown at the same rate. Fantasy romances are beautiful books, and have been a beloved genre for years, but A Fate Inked in Blood takes all of the substance out of this genre. It lacks world-building, character development, and engaging storylines, trying to cover these fatal flaws with beloved tropes, instant lust thinly disguised as love, and smut. The author had a solid stomping ground in Norse mythology, but it hardly contributed to the actual story. Freya's and Bjorn's desire to bang took precedence over the actual story. This book was definitely not my cup of tea, but I have the feeling it will end up being loved in certain bookish communities. If smutty romances are your thing, you'll like this one.

I’m so thankful I got to read this book because I was hooked IMMEDIATELY. I was unable to put it down and was so mad when I had to set my kindle down. I’m a fantasy reader but have never dipped my toes into Norse mythology fantasy, but Danielle completely made me want to go further. I cannot wait to own the physical copy and tell everyone I know to read it! the FMC was extremely likeable and very easy to connect with.

Thank you NetGalley + team for letting me read this!

After hearing much talk about this eARC in my discord reader community, I’m so excited that I was able to read it before it’s official release, especially since I LOVED the bridge kingdom.

The concept behind this was so unique - a Norse god inspired mythology? A badass FMC who really went through trial after trial in her life? I loved reading this story and seeing all the twists and turns, but I had a few problems with the execution.

On the romantasy side of things… this felt very instalove and cheap, somehow. Our FMC is written as being tough and headstrong, but every time something happens to her the MMC is conveniently right there to be her savior. The “forbidden” aspect of their relationship gave me… a lot of ick. Several times. And I understand there’s some technicalities behind it but this could have been framed/posed so much more differently and it would have made it so much better.

I would have loved to see a little more depth with the characters so they didn’t fall so stereotypically flat. It felt like there was more talk than action, and the headstrong “I know best” attitude of the FMC to justify all of her stupid actions was an easy out.

I will definitely Continue with the series to see if book 2 is better, but for this one I have to give it 3 stars

I was drawn into this book almost immediately, something that is happening less and less for me in this genre. I loved the mix of mythology with a fantasy twist. This was everything I had been looking for in a book lately. I could not put it down.

A Fate Inked in Blood takes readers on an enchanting journey into a world steeped in Norse mythology and fantasy. This novel, the first in the Saga of the Unfated series, is a spellbinding tale that seamlessly weaves together elements of romance, betrayal, and destiny.

The story follows Freya, a young woman trapped in an undesirable marriage, yearning for a life as a warrior. Her dreams take an unexpected turn when her husband's betrayal catapults her into a fight for survival against his son, Bjorn.

Danielle's storytelling prowess shines through as we witness Freya's transformation from a vulnerable bride to a formidable warrior. The author's vivid descriptions breathe life into the richly crafted Norse world, immersing readers in its culture and mythology.

One of the standout aspects of this novel is the complex relationship between Freya and Bjorn. Their journey from enemies to lovers is beautifully portrayed, filled with tension and passion that leaps off the page. Freya's struggle to balance her growing feelings for Bjorn with her duty to her people adds depth to her character and keeps readers captivated.

"A Fate Inked in Blood" is a masterfully written blend of romance and adventure that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The pacing is impeccable, and the plot twists keep you guessing until the very end. Danielle L. Jensen has created a world and characters that are impossible to forget.

This book is a must-read for fans of Norse fantasy and romance. Danielle's storytelling is nothing short of extraordinary, and this book is a testament to her skill as a writer. I eagerly anticipate the next installment in the Saga of the Unfated series, as I'm sure it will continue to deliver the same magic and intrigue found in this exceptional series.

A Fate Inked in Blood
Rating: 5 stars
✅Fantasy Romance
✅Battle
✅Vikings
✅Strong world building with Norse Mythology
✅Fun Banter and romantic tension
✅Prophecies
✅ Unique magical powers
This is definitely one of my favorite new books of the year! Freya is a mere fisherman’s wife trapped in a miserable, abusive relationship, when suddenly, she is forced to reveal her powers that mark her as the prophesized Shield Maiden. This premise could sound like another rehash of the “Chosen One” trope, but Danielle Jenson really transformed this story into something much more. Freya is a character unique in her strength and resolve. She has amazing powers, but is trapped by her circumstances. I appreciated that despite having powers, Freya did not have the perfect life. The stark reality of Freya’s struggle and the painful elements of her situation made her feel real and gritty as a character. Bjorn was the perfect romantic interest- fiercely protective, brooding, and a total badass. I loved the banter between Freya and Bjorn.
I have read and enjoyed Danielle Jenson’s Bridge Kingdom Series, but I think I might like this book even more! Author Danielle Jenson really did a fantastic job building this world and defining a clear magic system. I appreciate the effort that she put into the small details, and I could tell that she really took the time to flesh out the world and make it a distinct and complex place with Viking influences. The ending left me DYING for the next book!
Note: I received a free arc (Thank you Book Sirens and Danielle Jenson!), but this review is voluntary and entirely my honest opinion of the book.

Great for fans of Vikings show or Sky in the Deep.
It is extremely rare that a plot twist surprises me but AFIIB threw me for a loop or two.
I love how Freya grows in confidence as Bjorn challenges her to be authentic. Freya is fierce, multidimensional and I love her character arc.
A rich world with a fast paced plot full of intrigue and all the romance you’d expect from a N.A. romantasy.

Jensen is a masterful storyteller. World, plot and characters are all 5 stars; it just happens this reader prefers no language & low spice but I loved the story.

Content: several on-page spicy scenes, intermittent language & gore (it’s Vikings, after all!)

This book exceeded my expectations for sure! I am pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it and every twist and turn is just so good! Loved the magic system in this. I adored the romance, a great forbidden slow burn. The twist at the end may be something some people can predict but it is still done so well and really leaves you hungry for the next book! I loved it so much and cannot wait for the next book!!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sending me this eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

A Fate Inked in Blood is a hard book for me to rate because there are parts that I absolutely loved and parts that just weren’t my thing.

I loved the world filled with Norse mythology and viking culture. The viking inspired world was exciting to read about and is filled with adventure that never leaves you bored. It had truly amazing action and battle scenes. This was fast paced and never dull. Also the Norse mythology was done so well! I don’t know a ton about Norse mythology but that wasn’t a problem at all. I think I've found a new love of Norse mythology after reading this and want to pick up other books featuring it.

What I wasn’t a huge fan of was the romance and I sort of suspected that it wouldn’t be for me before starting. I think others will love the romance and that my thoughts on it were just a personal preference more than anything. This book gets pretty heavy on the romance in the second half and that definitely affected my enjoyment in the later half. That being said, I will most likely still read the next book.

I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a Norse inspired romantasy and am excited to see where the story goes!

Wow! What a fantastic beginning to a new series! I loved the Norse setting and all of the gods mentioned. The chemistry between Bjorn and Freya was perfect. I loved the idea of fate and undated paths as well as all of the prophecies. Can’t wait for book 2!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of A Fate Inked in Blood.

Upon finishing this book, my only thought was, “When is the next book out?”. I absolutely need the next book ASAP. I firmly believe going into this book with as little information as possible is the best way to go about it. I will keep my review vague and as spoiler-free as possible.

This book had me absolutely hooked from the first page (especially the first few chapters). Freya is a shield maiden, a secret that she and her family have kept her whole life. Once her secret is revealed, she trapped in a marriage to a ruthless, power hungry jarl. As she learns to control her power, she finds herself growing closer and closer to the jarl’s son.

The author does an amazing job of describing Freya’s struggles with fate, her desires, and the rage that threatens to consume her. The forbidden romance, the magic system, the tension, and the spice are all top tier. Don’t even get me started about the twist at the end! I will absolutely recommend this book to anyone who will listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First, thank you to NetGalley and Del Ray for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The beginning is captivating and Jensen makes it easy for the reader to pick up and understand. The world building is simple and palatable. Overall, I thought she did a good job of explaining Norse mythology without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary details. I appreciated her writing style and found myself consistently impressed by her use of descriptive language. I am sure this book will satiate readers who are looking for an engaging, fast-paced, 🌶️ romantasy.

I reallllyyyyy wanted to give this book 5 stars and to be honest it started out as a 5 star read to me. The storyline was interesting but I began to struggle when it felt rushed. As much as I enjoyed the plot, it felt like Jensen tried to cram a wwwhhhooolllleeee bunch of really good ideas into 1 novel, and instead of spreading it out, she rushed the storyline and did it in a good but less than stellar way.

Don’t get me wrong…this book is still a good read, it was just missing some of the development I wished it had, markedly in the romance between the main characters.
