After reading the synopsis of The Registration, I just had to find out more and wow, I was not let down. This book gave me Hunger Games and The Purge vibes but combined together. I was constantly rooting for Lynell and couldn’t stop till I got to the end to find out how she was- this story had me completely hooked. I’m so pleased that I had come across this book and can’t wait to explore some of her future books.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #CamCatBooks for the audio ARC of #TheRegistration by #MadisonLawson. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. With all the drama and cat and mouse, it reminded me of hunger games/purge. Absolutely loved it and can’t wait for the movie release.
Fourteen days…….that’s how long you have to live if you are “registered”. Someone submits your name and then they have two weeks to kill you or have you killed., without consequences or prosecution.
Why would you do this? Abuse, anger, power all are emotions that could trigger someone to submit your name. If the two weeks are up and you still are alive you’re then immune. It’s a one time offer so you need to choose wisely.
The main character is in line to Register her abusive stepfather when she hears her own name being written down. She’s shocked and quickly leaves the building in hopes of staying out sight for the dangerous period.
From there it’s constant fear, looking over your shoulder, trying to figure who you could trust and discovering a family tie you never knew existed.
A suspenseful, dystopian storyline that is constantly moving and keeping the reader/listener engaged.
3.75-4⭐️
I had the audiobook read by Kathleen Mclerney who does a good job with distinct voices for the characters. I feel that the audiobook kept my attention better than reading it would have done.
I’d describe it as speculative thriller with a dash of action where the law is different but set in a very recognisable world following a civil war in the near future. I loved the premise of the book. In this world each person can commit one murder without consequence during their lifetime. As long as it has been registered and carried out within 14 days. That part of the world building was great and had me riveted. Initially I thought my rating was going to be much higher.
Lynell is at the registration centre to use her registered choice, that of her childhood abuser, when she hears Zac registering her name. As well as surviving the next two weeks Lynell is desperate to find out why this unknown person wants her dead.
Overall this had a YA feel to it for me, even though the main character was in her 20’s the tone came across as much younger I don’t know if the narrators young sounding voice for Lynell adds to that vibe. Although there are scenes that are much darker in nature, not suitable for a YA audience.
It was entertaining, more so in the first half, I found the second half tended to drag. It didn’t manage to live up to the excellent opening for me.
Lynell’s past is gradually revealed throughout the book, I found her likeable and was rooting for her, there are characters to hate too, and some that come good. There are themes of abuse of power, family bonds and their resilience, and making moral choices.
I found a couple of the scenarios weren’t convincing enough. It has a plot twist which adds another dimension.
I feel it’s left open for another book, as the ending was somewhat open. There are enough answers for the readers, just not enough explanation. Would I go for a sequel? I’m not convinced that I would.
The narrator was great! The story was also super creative and interesting. It felt a tad YA somehow, in a way that I can’t really explain. That being said, it was still a solid listen! The idea of the registration was super intriguing, but the direction this story took didn’t really focus on that unique premise as much as I had hoped.
Wow!
Like the Purge turned thriller. I absolutely loved this. Loved the characters, their backstories & the crazy twists I didn't see coming.
Absolutely amazing cuz it's RARE I am ever surprised.
I cried at one part and dude, I'm not even sorry.
Honestly, I’m not sure why I haven’t heard SO MUCH MORE about this book?!?!
It was PHENOMENAL!!
Lynell Mize is a young woman who finds herself, once again, in the line to register a kill.
Yes, you read that right.
You see she lives in a world where you are able to LEGALLY kill one person in your lifetime. You need to register the name, and perform the kill within 14 days. And there needs to be a good reason for the kill…
She has wanted to do this many times before, but this time she IS going to STAY on the line and register….her stepfather…who abused her as a child.
Until, while standing on the line, she hears HER NAME registered…by someone she doesn’t even know! And she RUNS!
We live in dystopian times, and the tale that follows is just amazing!
And while she runs, she finds solace, and help, in places she never expected! As well as horror, pain and fear in places she’d never expect.
And the twists and turns that occur will have your hair standing straight up!!
Loved both Daniel and Zach.
Wonderful, IMO…
Thanks to NetGalley and CamCast books for the audio copy of this book which I thought came out in Sept of this year, but was ACTUALLY released in 2022!!
5+ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!!!
This was an absolutely fascinating concept that had moments of brilliance, but also a significant proportion of head scratching or cringe-worthy moments. Despite a fantastic opening, and the number of fascinating philosophical issues that were raised, a lot of the plot felt like it was stuttering along. There was a LOT of gruesome torture and dialog that it was hard to imagine real people ever speaking. The characters felt a bit flat and stereotypical, and the plot would click along for a while then suddenly fall into a lull of repetitive waiting for the next piece of the puzzle to drop... It was a more uneven than I wanted it to be as a result.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of this book was so interesting and I loved the concept. This book was gripping and had me on the edge of my seat. It really gave off The Purge vibes with the license to commit murder at certain points in the year. I really enjoyed this ride.
I had to DNF this book it just annoyed me and seemed to drag. The story confused me from the get go and i didn't know what was happening
"It's funny how there seems to be a limit to the amount of guilt a person can feel. Lynell's limit was pushed and reached and expanded years ago. Now she's numb to the feeling."
The Registration by Madison Lawson takes place in a world where murder is legal. By law, everyone is allowed to "register" one person they wish to kill. This act must take place within 2 weeks of registration date and you can only register once in your lifetime. Lynell's world is turned sideways when she finds herself in line to do just that. She overhears the man in front of her register her own name. This sets into motion an exciting cat and mouse chase as Lynell tries to uncover who would want her dead and why.
This book was a fun read. Lawson drops us into a world much like our own but with unusual governing beliefs. It is just as eye opening as it is suspenseful. As readers we not only get to follow Lynell as she races to find the truth and save her own life, but we are hit head on with thought provoking questions about government control and right vs wrong.
I enjoyed this as an Audiobook. Kathleen McInerney did a great job at creating unique voices for all the different characters. She was easy to listen to, which is a plus because this book is pretty hefty. I would highly suggest her as a narrator and plan on seeing what other works she has done.
#TheRegistration is a dystopian suspense novel. If you like twists turns and a breakneck pace with some murder and dystopian politics you will love this and be begging for more. I wanted more at the ending.
Thank you ComCat, Madison Lawson, and Netgalley for this audio in exchange for an honest review. This dystopian thriller will keep you on edge as it’s action packed through out the story. So many times in the story I was afraid for Lynette, hoping she would get through ok. The narration was awesome and well done. Not my typical story I would normally read/listen, but an so glad I did. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 solids on this one!
I found this audiobook by chance and initially I was so glad I grabbed it. The blurb intrigued me, but the story and writing, and the narration, really drew me in and captivated me. I loved the intriguing idea of being allowed to register one person to murder - I appreciated that euthanasia and abortion were counted as murder. I was continually questioning what would happen and the reasonings behind our different characters' actions. This book went way beyond where I expected it to. It is definitely lengthy and some of my attention waned through it. There are torture scenes included also. This was an interesting dystopian idea of murder registration and its impact on society.
I received an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. This is entirely my own opinion.
I DNF'd this one @ 40%
I liked the premise of this book, no that's a lie I loved the premise of this book only to be left extremely disappointed. Lynell was one of the most (if not the most) annoying main characters I have ever come across.
The chapters are way to long with no natural breaks where you can stop listening which left me feeling very confused every time I had to start listening again because it was in the middle of the story and I had to keep going back to remind myself what happened.
Usually books written in third person is not a turn off for me, sometimes I actually prefer third person but not in this case. I felt like Lynell's name was way over used but maybe it was just the narrator's voice that got on my nerves.
With a few changes it could be a great book but unfortunately right now it completely misses the mark for me.
I wanted to like this book so much but I had such a hard time getting into it. Conceptually, it’s fantastic. But the main character was so annoying to me in the first few chapters. She didn’t even fight anything that was happening, she just kind of went along with all these people trying to kill her. She followed whoever told her to follow them and didn’t really question anything they told her. That in and of itself seemed so unrealistic, and you have to be able to suspend your disbelief in speculative fiction. Also, it read very much like a YA, even though the main character is 24 years old. It was more the tone and dialogue than anything else. I think the story has a lot of potential, but I had a really hard time getting through it. I didn’t feel a “need” to keep going. It was more like I was reading it to complete a task because it was very slow in some parts. But with a little more work and aging up the tone of it, I think this could be a really killer story!
Huge thanks to CamCat Books and NetGalley for sending me this ARC for review! All of my reviews are given honestly!
I received a complimentary audiobook copy of THE REGISTRATION by Madison Lawson – thank you to CamCat Books, Netgalley, and the author!
THE REGISTRATION is a dystopian thriller set in a world where peace is kept by allowing each person to legally register to kill one person. Upon registration, you have two weeks to complete the killing. Lynell has made the decision to register someone and is waiting in line to complete the task when she hears her name mentioned. She’s been registered by someone she doesn’t know and suddenly she’s on the run, trying to stay ahead of danger until her two weeks run out.
This synopsis caught my attention and had me really eager to pick this audiobook up! I did find the concept and the explanations to be really interesting and probably the strongest part of the book. The system of registrations was an interesting idea and an interesting take on keeping the peace. There were some things I wanted to be more clear on. For one thing the discussion of abortion as being one’s once in a lifetime registration didn’t feel fully fleshed out. I waned a bit more background on how the different rules and ideas came into being.
I liked Lynell as our central character, though she was younger than I expected going into the book. This book isn’t labeled on Goodreads for any particular age group, but it felt fairly closer to the YA end of things given the main character’s inner dialogue and her relationships. There is a bit of a feeling of teen angst to things.
This book was picked up to be adapted to screen and I can fully see why as it would make a good action thriller. I found this an entertaining read and would absolutely check out the film. THE REGISTRATION is out now and the ebook is on KU!
This book was so interesting and incredible from the very beginning to the end. I could not stop listening this to the story.
The Registration is a dystopian novel, in this world everyone can commit murder in their lifetime legally if they register the victim and accomplish their kill within fourteen days. I can’t even imagine what our main character, Lynell Mize felt when she heard a stranger register her to he killed!
It was high stakes, full of action and emotions filled novel. I enjoyed every second of it and I’m very excited to hear this book will be adapted into a movie and next year a sequel will be released as well to the book.
I highly recommend reading this book, it was such a unique sci-fi dystopian read!
Thank you to @netgalley and @camcat_books for providing me an ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review.
I received a copy of this audio for an honest review.
Man, what a story. As crazy as the plot seems in the description somehow the author sells in such a way, I'm not quite sure it's not possible. The description of why the registration was started is both plausible and frighteningly familiar. I liked the strong female lead in this story, as she was just an average everyday Jane who found herself in and impossible situation. She does NOT just sit around and waiting on her knight, although there may or may not also be a knight. I enjoyed the struggle throughout and the ultimate resolution. The subplot was good, it didn't overshadow the main storyline and gave it a little something to help connect the characters.
The narration was also good. Easy to listen to and no grating voice changes for different characters. I would both listen to more books by this Narrator and will be looking forward to other books by this Author.
When I read the synopsis of this book I was immediately interested.
I was quickly hooked to the story and there was constant action. It took a lot of turns and we got a lot of different things in this book.
Definitely a fun read/listen.
