From polio to war to bigotry to spina bifida to poverty to wearing a hijab to dwarfism becoming a refugee to segregation to ADHD these athletes have overcome and broken records in their fields and become winners in the Olympics and Paralympics as well as the Special Olympics. Each one of the athletes in this book started as children and pursued the dream, so their stories cover only this portion of their lives (with minimal exceptions). There is a bibliography at the end. Aimed for ages 8-12 but a fine read for all.
The illustrations by Allison Steinfeld are clear, imaginative, colorful, and meaningful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school or your local public library.
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Quirk Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

A lovely assortment of biographies. This is a nice choice for children who have exhausted or are growing out of the Who Was series. Sports bios are a great high interest choice, but there is a lot of text, so the kids need a bit of focus. The biographies are only several pages, though, and cartoon inserts are helpful. Plus the aspect of "these famous people were just like me when they were little" is super appealing.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

I read this book with my son and we both absolutely adored it! We previously read Kid Scientists, another book in this series, and when I saw that this book was releasing I had to get my hands on it!! We read one Olympian's story each night before bed. After the first night he was begging me for bedtime and story time, just to hear more! I am excited to have a book to teach him about past Olympic star athletes, since this is an Olympic year! This got him and I both excited and engaged, he even wanted to look up more athletes who are competing this year! I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about athletes and their drive to compete. It shows how hard everyone works to achieve their dreams! Love, love, love!

If you are looking for inspirational role models for your children, look no further.

This non-fiction book gives short biographical summaries on some incredible sporting superstars, recent and historic. It gives background information, how they overcame prejudice, broke down barriers and achieved amazing feats, often in the face of adversity.

With diversity at its helm, Kid Olympians: Summer will take any child on a journey to learn about these legends and teach them that no matter where you come from, whatever your race, gender, physical and mental challenges may be, you can achieve your dreams if you shoot for the stars and believe in yourself.

We recommend this book for any children aged 8-12 looking for positive role models and to anyone who enjoys the Little People Big Dreams series looking for more in-depth knowledge and better value for money.

We are going to be busy all weekend perfecting our Fosbury Flops!

I like these books. I have several other books by this author and in this format in my classroom library. I was engaged in each of the biographies and learned more about each person. A couple typos, yet!
