Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my copy of Tales of World War II by Dr. Hattie Hearn; Narrated by Ell Potter in exchange for an honest review. It published October 3, 2023.
First off, the narration was extremely well-done, it couldn't have been done better! Secondly, the production value of this book was so impressive, I couldn't believe what a great job was done!
I listened to this with my upper elementary and middle school homeschoolers, and it was a perfect history lesson. We had so many important discussions from this book and I highly value the lessons and stories from this book. I highly recommend this book, not just for kids who are learning history, but really for anyone. It is so valuable in my opinion!
Thank you Macmillan Audio, Macmillan Young Listeners for allowing me to review Tales of World War II on NetGalley.
Narrator: Ell Potter: Well done. I thought she had the perfect voice for her audience.
Stars: 2.5
Unique learning technique. Audibly Potter reads what could be the backside of a researchers index cards. I had boxes when in school: front -- Soviet Union; back -- definition with a note -- Cold War. The author has dissected World War II in that fashion. Additionally, I was reminded of my speech days, where I used the back of my cards to fill my time. The book moves seamlessly like a seasoned debater (My highest was second, in case you were wondering.).
I had two problems with the book: The first was that the music and and the sound effects were too loud. They overshadowed the points being highlighted. It was incredibly sloppy editing that this wasn't caught prior to production. Next I can't think who to gift or recommend this to --a teacher?
I liked the concept. I liked the dictionary at the end. I just don't know where to use it.
Good quick read for kids about interesting stories from WWII. I enjoyed listening to the stories and can see how my students would like the bite size history!
Dr. Hattie Hearn’s Tales of World War II is a well-curated collection of stories from around the world. It is suitable for children ages 8-10 and beyond.
I have other books in my collection from the “Tales Of” series and they are beautifully illustrated. Tales of World War II was my first exposure to a “Tales Of” audiobook and it was incredibly well done. The definitions, explanations, and descriptions of key figures/players in the war were woven into the audiobook to provide context to the stories. The sound design added interest and drama to the individual storylines. Ell Potter’s narration was absolutely perfect.
I highly recommend Tales of World War II as a way to introduce this period in history to young children and/or provide an avenue for deeper discussions about World War II.
Kind thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the ALC of this title.
Tales of World War II by Dr. Hattie Hearn releases October 3, 2023.
This was such a fun and refreshing read on the untold stories of World War II! I am fascinated with history, especially the history of everyday people and animals in warfare, and this is just the ticket! I will definitely purchase a copy to use in my classroom during our study of WWII. PLEASE do one on WWI, too, and include little Cher Ami! Thank you so much for creating this wonderful audiobook. <3
Tales of World War II is geared toward younger readers, with an emphasis on sharing smaller stories that we may not have heard before. I listened to this one with my 14-year-old son who is an avid WWII fan. While we enjoyed the stories, and the history that was shared, the music was very distracting, and at times, took away from what the author was trying to say.
Good listen, but would prefer the music to be a bit more muted, so as to really shine through the stories and history that is being shared.
"Tales of World War II" is an enthralling collection of true stories that takes readers on a captivating journey through one of the most pivotal periods in human history. With the perfect blend of engaging narratives, evocative background music, and skilled narration, this book offers a unique and immersive reading experience.
The addition of music in the background serves as a brilliant touch, enhancing the emotional depth of each story and transporting readers to the era of World War II. It sets the tone and adds an extra layer of connection to the events and individuals depicted in the book. This auditory dimension adds a level of immersion that is often missing in historical accounts.
The narration of the book is commendable, offering a clear and engaging delivery that keeps readers invested in the stories being told. The narrator's ability to convey the emotions, courage, and struggles of the individuals involved in these tales is truly praiseworthy. They breathe life into the narratives, making it easy for readers to connect with the characters and events on a personal level.
What makes "Tales of World War II" truly outstanding is its ability to humanize history. It goes beyond dates and facts, delving deep into the personal experiences, sacrifices, and triumphs of those who lived through this tumultuous period. Each story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a reminder of the enduring impact of World War II. Although made for children audiences, I was entertained and enthralled.
In conclusion, "Tales of World War II" is a must-read for history enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates a well-crafted narrative. It successfully combines engaging storytelling, immersive music, and skilled narration to create a memorable reading experience that will leave a lasting impression. This book not only educates but also inspires, making it a valuable addition to the library of World War II literature.
Tales of World War II is a gripping and informative audiobook about the Second World War for the younger generation.
This wonderful volume, though aimed at children and teenagers, will undoubtedly teach adults something new. The book is packed with information and illustrated in a way that makes complex topics digestible. Whether you're a history buff or looking to expand your knowledge, this book is a great resource.
The book consists of a series of short stories that focus on specific events and individuals from the war. Some of these individuals are not well-known to the general public. This format makes the book easy to read or listen to in short bursts. Additionally, it enables the author to elaborate on certain topics more deeply than would be possible in a traditional chronological narrative.
Ell Potter's narration of Tales of World War II is engaging and easy to follow, and the use of sound effects throughout the book adds a sense of realism and excitement to the story. However, some listeners might find the music in some parts to be too loud.
The book covers a wide range of topics, including the rise of the Nazi Party, the Holocaust, the major battles of the war, and the role of ordinary people in the war effort.
It is a good example of how complex historical concepts are explained in a manner that is easy to comprehend for younger readers.
As a whole, Tales of World War II is an excellent audiobook for anyone interested in learning more about this significant historical period. It is both informative and engaging, and it is sure to appeal to a wide range of listeners.
Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in learning more about this important period in history.
Tales of World War II: Amazing True Stories from the War that Shook the World is a riveting, comprehensive overview of World War II for anyone looking for a place to start learning about this monumental chapter in history. While billed as a children's book, Tales of World War II is mature enough that adults will also be able to find much to enjoy here. Complete with a rousing orchestral score and interspersed with real-life stories and anecdotes that help bring the war to life, this is the type of audiobook that families can enjoy on long car rides together. If anything, the only drawback is that occasionally the music becomes a bit overpowering, drowning out the speaker's voice.
Lots of great facts. Fun background music. Would be great to use bits in the classroom to help bring stories to life.
I really enjoyed this audiobook! The stories in this book are unfamiliar to me which is.exactly what I was hoping for. There was also a good cross section of representation for the tales. For instance, I had never heard the story of Shewareged The Lionhearted of Ethiopia, and I found very little information on her afterward. The narrator had great pacing and enunciation which made this very easy to listen to. The music was perfectly balanced so that it would not overwhelm the narrator, nor distract from the story. The transitions between sections could be a little more fluid, but the way they are broken up makes it easier to listen to in smaller chunks. This was also quite educational even for someone who thought they knew quite a lot about World War II. I look forward to hearing more audiobooks like this!
