4.5* I am enjoying the gentle allusions to fairy tales in Melanie Dickerson's Dericott Tales! Although this is part of that series, it stands alone. I enjoyed the gentle growth of a relationship between Charles and Louisa, the de-villanization of the giant at the proverbial top of the beanstalk, and the strength Louisa finds on her journey.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Melanie Dickerson never disappoints, she has a way of making history come to life. I love that she focuses on bringing the heroine's story to life.

It’s a good historical novel that has a heroine strong enough to keep the reader invested. Due in part, I suppose, to the 1388 setting, there are many many Christian references throughout the novel, which could be off putting to some readers. I do enjoy historical novels, as they provide a good inspiration for some investigations by teen readers. Hopefully this novel spurns some interest in understanding the short reign of Richard III and what early English life was like,

Lady of Disguise, by Melanie Dickerson, introduces Louisa. This young girl, living in the year 1388, feels she must protect her younger sister after her father passes away. Her greedy uncle has plans to marry both girls off to the highest bidder. Soon Louisa disguises her self as a young boy to go in search of a treasure her father had always talked about!

Sir Charles is a knight, who quickly sees through Louisa’s disguise, when they meet in the woods early one morning. As Charles and Louisa journey together, a friendship and maybe something more slowly grows!

You will be surprised by what Charles and Louisa encounter as they climb the mountain to find the treasure. A treasure will appear in a place neither would have imagined!

Lady of Disguise by Melanie Dickerson is a great historical fiction that is the sixth book in The Dericott Tales series.

I have read almost all of the books prior to this latest installment, and while they ar definitely not needed to understand and enjoy this novel, I still recommend reading the stories of each sibling within the Dericott family.

This one takes place in late 14th century England and is told in alternating views between the two main characters: Charles and Louisa. Their paths cross as they are attempting to solve their own challenges and through one another, faith, and hope, they work together to overcome the obstacles that have come their way.

I have enjoyed this series. They are all easy and entertaining reads where good triumphs over evil, and HEA take place. Sometimes one just wants to find some positivity in this world.

And interesting story, but not up to the author’s usual standards. There is a blatant mixing of periods and fashions without regard to historical accuracy.

LADY OF DISGUISE by MELANIE DICKERSON is a delightful romantic “fairy tale” which takes place in England in 1388, and in which we come upon the Dericott family again, with Sir Charles Raynesford of Dericott coming to the rescue of Louisa Lenton of Maydestone, who has run away from her wicked uncle who wants to marry her and her twelve year old sister Margaret to the highest bidder. Dressed as a boy, she sets off to Yorkshire to find the Viking treasure she has heard so much about. The characters she and Charles come across are interesting, and I love to see how they interact with the simple truth of Christ’s love and compassion flowing through the story…….
I like this description of Charles, a knight dedicated to his king and “going about the English countryside seeking wrongs to make right, damsels in distress to rescue, and other good deeds and noble quests,” and that of Louisa, who, as she left on her jourey, “hugged her sister, praying silently, God, help me come back to her with enough money so I can provide for us both.”
I found Lady of Disguise most enjoyable and inspirational - a “breath of fresh air” in its simplicity and truth.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Thomas Nelson. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

A lovely tale of love and mistaken identity, this gem takes place in medieval times, and at its heart is the love of a sister for a sister. Melanie Dickerson writes charming romances that warm the heart, and this one is no different. I found it a very engrossing, enjoyable read that I will return to!
