Agent Kim Maxwell is working under cover in France during the Second World War. She is investigating the death of Bernard Leblanc, a local SOE leader. It's made to look like an accident, but Kim's experience tells her it is not.

Reporting to her lover and fellow agent Foxy at the Bistro Le Renard Rouge (The Red Fox) she is progressing her investigations of the suspicious death. As she and Foxy start digging, the uncover a German operation with code name Enthaupten. Beheading.

Not knowing who to trust, Kim and Foxy work together to get as much information as possible before it's too late.

Fast moving, engaging and unexpected including Foxy managing to get married and buried in less than a week.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written historical novel. Hilary Green is amazing at bringing history to life (adding a fictional twist, or two)!

PS. This is the second book in the series, and it worked as a stand-alone, although I'd suggest you read Operation Lighting Bolt first to get the full the back story (but that was my fault for not having read the first one).

The second in a series featuring two SOE agents, Kim and Foxy, working with La Résistance in France during World War II. At first it was much like the first book - traitors, Gestapo, torture but then the two main characters managed to get back to England - one badly injured from being tortured and the other having escaped from the Gestapo after having determined who the traitor was but caught while trying to radio the information back to London. The plot then becomes one of potential threat to the King by German sympathisers who want Edward back on the throne. Fast paced action, some more deaths, the traitor evades them for a while but intriguing plots and satisfactory ending. Not quite a 5* but not far off. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

British Agent Kim Maxwell has been assigned on a mission to find out how her friend died in France during WW2. Kim knows it was no accident and uses her skills to investigate the murder of her friend. Kim is linked to another agent called Foxy, both of them get caught by the Gestapo in France but also getaway. Brilliant S. How they use their contacts using codes gets them out the country back to UK for another special mission. Both conquer the mission and put the enemy's away for good. Well written storyline, couldn't put the book down. Thank you Netgalley

Rating: 4.5⭐️

Summary:
Agent Kim Maxwell is sent to the South of France to investigates the death of a local SOE leader i. With her lover Roland at the Bistro Le Renard Rouge, they hide in plain sight as German officers become patrons. Whispers of "Enthaupten" hint at a deeper Nazi plot, risking the King's life. Amidst spies and danger, Kim must unravel the truth to save the war effort.

What stood out to me:
The plot intrigue, the quality of writing, the enigmatic mystery, the well-developed characters, and the author's deep understanding of the time period..

My thoughts:
I loved this book! I haven't read many mysteries, but after reading the blurb I thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed! I especially enjoyed the author's writing style and the plot which seems to almost be like two stories perfectly melded together to give this book. The only thing stopping this from being five star book it is that at some time I found the writing rather long, and so I ended up skipping lines here and there. This may be because I am less familiar with mysteries and historical fiction and so didn't enjoy the minute details the author was describing as much as I could have. But to summarise my thoughts I loved this book and would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to read a nice historical mystery!

Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this WW2 story.

It has you hooked from the beginning wanting to know what happens next.

The characters were well-developed and there’s so much happening throughout the story about what the men and women did towards the war efforts during WW2.

I highly recommend this book.

This is a nail-biting follow-up to Operation Lightning Bolt, which I loved. This one has some of the same characters but could be enjoyed as a standalone novel. It begins in January 1944 and is set in France & England, with the Allies preparing for D-Day. Historical figures include Klaus Barbie in Lyon & King George VI in London. The author is adept at including real events and people smoothly with her fictional characters and storyline. SOE agents Kim Maxwell & Foxy continue to fight for king & country but they don't get through adversity without damage. Although brilliant and brave, they aren't written as superheroes escaping without a scratch which makes these books believable to me. Since the war will continue for another year, I sincerely hope that Hilary Green will write a third book in this series.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the opportunity to read the digital ARC. All opinions and the review are my own.

Love this book , twists and turns, characters ‘visible’. Well researched historical novel. Very active drama that keeps you interested.

This was kind of a hybrid cozy mystery/spy/romance novel that didn’t really succeed in any of the genres. The uneven tone was confusing, the heroine’s espionage suspect.
The whole thing was both predictable snd far-fetched

A gripping WW2 story! It keeps you engaged from page 1 and doesn't let up (in all the best ways). Although I'm not a history buff (and can't tell how accurately things and events were portrayed), it felt very authentic. The plot is face-paced, and characters well-developed. Books like this make me want to dive into the history books and learn more about the many men and women that aided war efforts during WW2. I definitely recommend this book to history lovers, but do take note that this book isn't the start of the series. Just for continuity sake, I'd suggest starting with the first prior to reading this. That said, I'd happily pick up another novel by this author.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book and for the eARC copy. I am voluntarily leaving this review.

historical-novel, historical-places-events, historical-research, France, resistance-efforts, undercover, espionage, WW2, 1944, mystery, suspense, suspicion, threats, murder-investigation, thriller, camaraderie, subterfuge, unputdownable

This is the first I've read by this author, but now I think that I'll have to do a binge read! Seems to have either done a deep research dive into WW2 French resistance or read similar nonfiction or fictionalized biographies to those I've read. This tale is fiction and centers on one Brit agent who also happens to be involved with one of the resistance agents. The first question is whether the death of a fellow agent was the accident it seemed to be or clandestine murder by person or persons unknown. And so the investigation begins.
The characters are well explored and the plot not only believable but unputdownable.
I requested and received an EARC from Joffe Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

I really enjoyed this story. I don’t know how realistic is was to what actually happened during the war, but obviously there were a lot of very brave men and women working behind the scenes like Kim and Foxy doing all sort of amazing, impossible sounding things to help bring the war to the end. I really enjoyed the relationship between Kim and Foxy and it was something different that they were able to be near each other during the whole operation, rather than being separated, which is what we usually hear about partners during the war. There were many women doing great things during the war, like Kim, and it was nice to read about the role that she played and how she was respected by many men as she should have been. There are other Kim Maxwell thrillers and I am now very keen to get my hands on them to read too.
