Oh, let me tell you about the e-ARC I snagged in August, "I Hope This Doesn't Find You" by Ann Liang. Huge shoutout to Kathleen, the publisher and NetGalley for hooking me up! Man, oh man, did I gobble up this book like my favorite snacks. Academia, academic rivals turned lovers – that trope really hit the spot. Julius and Sadie going at it like rational champs, duking it out in the academic arena? Sign me up! The whole school setup, the race to be the academic big shots – it's all like a finely tuned symphony.
I practically devoured this book – couldn't tear my eyes away. If I had to sum it up, it's like the ultimate YA romance blended perfectly with a rom-com. Watching Julius and Sadie shift from sparring opponents to falling head over heels was just heartwarming. The book had moments that made me smile, others that made me roll my eyes, and plenty that made me believe in silver linings.
Remember her book "This Time It's Real"? Yeah, I read that in July and it was a total hit for me. No surprise I was itching for more Ann Liang goodness. Waiting till February 2024 was not an option, my friend. And boy, am I glad I jumped on this early train!
Picture this: Sadie spills the beans – all her frustrations, gripes, and rants – in some drafted emails. Oops, they weren't meant to be sent, but guess what? That slip-up brought Sadie and Julius closer than ever. Life works in mysterious ways, right? Overall, this book had me grinning like a goofball...All in all, I'm slapping a solid five stars on this gem.
Thank you to NetGalley and Scholastic for this DRC.
In I Hope This Doesn’t Find You Sadie Wen is a completely in her head teenager trying to deal with all the responsibility that she has heaped on herself. In an attempt to always present a smiling face to everyone she vents in emails that she has saved as draft, ever since she was 8 years old. Of course, they get out, and the majority of them are to the boy she believes is her nemesis.
I related to Sadie’s being in her head so much and spending way too much time staring at her nemesis. Enemies to lovers is always a good trope, especially when one of them doesn’t know they are enemies! I also liked that she wasn’t just an academic achiever but ran track. I would have liked to know more about that. Overall a fun and absorbing read.

To All the Boys meets Never Have I Ever! If you loved Devi and Ben's rivals to lovers story arc, and the truth getting out with Lara Jean Song Covey, you'll adore this book just like I did!
This super sweet YA romance explores learning to be true to yourself, enjoying your youth, and discovering your first love...and it shows that sometimes love and hate are a lot closer than you might think!
ANN LIANG DOES IT AGAIN!!!! I absolutely adore Ann Liang's novels. Her characters and the plot in general are always so sweet and well developed. I don't read much YA romance anymore but I'll always read anything Liang releases!
Thank you SO much to the publisher and netgalley for this arc!! I was and still am so excited to have received it!
It's a cute Rivals to Lovers set up that will go over well with the younger young adults. It seems fine for middle grade. I stopped at the end of chapter 1 (4%).
Thanks to NetGalley and Scholastic for the ARC.
"I Hope This Doesn't Find You" by Ann Liang is a captivating romance that unfolds in the realm of Teens & YA literature. The book skillfully weaves together a tale of love, friendship, and personal growth, resonating with readers on multiple levels. With its relatable characters and genuine emotions, this novel creates a deep connection, leaving an indelible mark on anyone who dives into its pages. Ann Liang's storytelling prowess shines, making this a delightful and memorable read for fans of heartfelt YA romance.
I love this book, and I really enjoyed all the characters in the story—a nice book about academic rivalry, which is more refreshing than just a hate-to-love story.
wow. this book. there hasn't been an ann liang book i haven't liked. she's an author whose writing style i find myself gravitating towards and just appreciating deeply.
sadie. oh sadie. i genuinely don't know how ann was able to get into my brain and perfectly execute how my school experience went. she's able to put every thought and insecurity i've had into words. she poured her heart into sadie and anyone reading can see that. the way she handled sadie's story was visibly emotional and done perfectly. <b> sadie is for the "pathological people pleasers"<b> and nothing may ever change that. she wants to be liked. she NEEDS to be liked if it's the last thing she can do. ann's description of the physical pain people not liking her brings to herself both physically and mentally was so accurate and brought me to tears.
i think what was so perfect about this book was the fact that it was only through sadie's point of view. we lived her story with her. the initial confusion and anger of why julius must dislike her so much, making ourselves question what sort of grudge he has on her, to then slowly and surely along the way falling in love with him and understanding him. ann slowly shows the cracks into his cold standoffish persona and we see a sweet boy who cares so deeply for sadie but doesn't know if she feels the same.
school and doing your best to live up to expectations is such a consistent issue in so many people's lives and i think this book executed and handled it extremely well.
i am so thankful to have received an arc of this boom from netgalley and i absolutely can't wait to buy this book next year. it's a special one (,:
4.5!!! This is top runner for YA romance of 2024, highly recommend adding this to your tbr and pre-ordering. 'To all the boys I've loved before' but with hate emails instead of love letters.
"You then wrote three hundred words ranting about my hands. I had no idea you paid such close attention to the way I held my pen.." "I think you're obsessed with me Sadie Wen."
I LOVE 'I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU MORE' FLIRTING!!!!!!
Sadie and Julius are academic rivals to lovers. Sadie succeeds at everything she does and feels immense pressure to do so. Her world gets flipped upside down when all her private emails where she rants about Julius go public and she has to try her best to make amends not only for her image, but to the boy she hates most.
The banter was amazing, the characters were all so likable. This was just such a fun read!!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC and a chance to early read this.
i always rave about ann liang to anyone who will listen -- normally her books aren't the kind i'd go for, as i don't really care for YA romances. but oh my god. every time she releases something new, i'm the first to the shelves. there's just... something magical about the way she writes characters. i can't handle it.
i hope this doesn't find you follows sadie, who has a compulsive need to be perfect at everything. she feels immense pressure to be the absolute best, and she succeeds, for the most part. the reason for her dubious success has a name: julius. the only person more perfect than sadie, he exists to make her life a living hell. sadie's coping mechanism for julius's unfair perfect-ness is drafting emails to him that she'll never send. until, one day, when they do send. with julius's attention on her now more than ever and half the student body having their feathers ruffled by her explosive emails, sadie does what she always tries to -- fix it.
i read this in a day after a months-long book slump. once i started, i just couldn't stop. my advice: come for the romance, stay for the characters.
sadie is a painfully-relatable character to any teenager who has ever felt like the responsibility of the world weighs on their shoulders (and i certainly was that teenager). she strives to achieve every level of perfection possible, and resents julius for being able to achieve it seemingly effortlessly. their dynamic is a tangled web that liang takes her time to unravel. it's not just academic rivals to lovers (even though it is and it's incredible), it's two teenagers that are truly hurting and attempting to put one foot in front of the other, even if they're unknowingly destroying themselves and each other.
I am convinced that Ann Liang will never write a book that I will rate anything less than 5 stars now that I have read 3 of her works in the span of a week.
IHDTFY is another masterpiece under the Academic rivals to lovers subgenre. It follows the story of an embattled people-pleaser, Sadie Wen, who learns how to navigate high-school social life after several (and by several I actually mean a lot) distasteful email drafts that contain her snarkiest, meanest thoughts were sent to the entire school. Worse, a majority of these emails were directly addressed to her arch-nemesis, her sworn academic rival - the infuriatingly attractive Julius Gong.
I love how flawed and real Sadie is. Who doesn’t savour academic validation or just validation in general. Who doesn’t feel the weight of the world on their shoulders when you think that you’re the root cause of all problems? And who can resist a boy like Julius Gong - hot, smart, tall, and did I mention he’s hot? No but seriously, Julius is another complicated character, with a backstory I’m sure many Asian kids with overachieving siblings would empathise with.
The way Ann Liang writes, she sucks you in, pulls you in so deeply into this world she has created, and masterfully convinces you that these characters you never knew existed are suddenly your long-lost BFFs. By the end of 300-odd pages, you’ll reluctant to leave this fictional universe, you’ll unwilling to let go of these characters who you now understand through and through, and you’ll find yourself wanting for more. This is the magic of Ann’s works and I am blessed to have experienced the beauty of IHDTFY several months before January 2024. Sadie and Julius’ story is one you must read - one which “I am completely, helplessly obsessed with”.
A captivating, swoon-worthy book! I did not except to love this book as much as I did, as I was intrigued by the cover first. The academic rivalry between the two mains was believable, as well as their witty banter. The author’s prose is both easy to read for younger audiences, but not too immature for older YA readers. I believe fans of “To All The Boys I Loved Before” would love this book.
I wanted to love this. I really did. I loved that it had a To All The Boys vibe. However, this was kind of shallow and wooden. I didn't feel sparks, get in my feels, nothing. I was so uninvested in this. Not for me.
The ultimate academic rivals to lovers.
Sadie Wen’s need for perfection and to be adored by her peers is conveyed from the very first page. Her need to beat Julius, aka my newest book boyfriend, in everything she does and her fury when he one ups her makes this one of the best academic rivalries I’ve ever read. I read it in a day and quite literally could not put it down. Sadie’s leaked emails is the internal dialogue of the student who strives for academic validation. Her wit when writing that Julius is living up to his namesake had me dying.
This was the perfect YA rom-com to read!! It has a prestigious school setting with academic rivalry, school drama, and teenage angst. I loved Sadie and Julius’s competitive dynamic. It was amusing to see them constantly at each other’s throats and one-upping each other. It added the perfect tension when they started to grow feelings for each other and the line between love and hate began to blur. After a decade-long rivalry and feelings of contempt for each other, they become protective of each other and hold high regard for one another. Although neither could admit their feelings when they both believed the other couldn’t possibly like them back. The characters themselves were great to follow and I could sympathize with their internal conflicts and impossible self-expectations. Sadie is a people pleaser who wants to be liked and relied upon by others. She’s been the anchor of her family ever since her father abandoned them. Sadie places a lot of pressure on herself to excel in her studies and role as class captain so that she can build a successful career to support her family. I admired her character development in finally advocating for herself and revisiting old wounds. Julius had always seen through Sadie’s perfect student persona and encouraged her to grow a spine and speak honestly. Julius struggles with self-worth and the expectations put onto him by his family and being compared to his highly successful brother who looks down on him. It has a lot of common tropes and is oftentimes predictable but I still enjoyed every bit of it. I also wanted more insight into Sadie’s brother and mother and their relationship as a whole because they were often absent in the story until the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Scholastic Press for the arc.
I don't quite have the words to express how much I adored this novel. I can certainly see this one being the perfect read for those who enjoyed To All The Boys I've loved Before. They both follow a similar plot with a focus on personal messages being sent out when the writer only used them as an outlet. During the entire reading (which I devoured in a day because I couldn't put it down) I couldn't stop from smiling. I loved the slow burn nature of the romance. The tension and dynamic between the two rivals was infuriating but in the best way possible. I just know that this will be one of those books I grab to re-read when I need an emotional pick me up.
First, thankyou netgalley and publisher for giving me the earc, and here's my review.
If you think this book would be like "If You Could See The Sun" where there are many cute scenes between the mcs, then i have to tell you IT IS NOT. At first their bantering seems cute, reminds me when i was in high school, but then they keep fighting, the keep compete at each other, no ones want to give up, and because i myself loves to absorb every feelings, it makes me overwhelmed. And the nightmare happenned, the unsent hate emails were sent, because of that Sadie and Julius became closer. Sadie and her needs to please everyone, Julius and his dislike about Sadie being people pleaser. The book reminds me that no matter how much people tell us about our behavior, if we don't acknowledge it as a bad one that we have to change, then we won't. We are the one who have contol to ourselves, not others. When the author revealed the reason behind Sadie being a people pleaser it makes me so sad :( the childhood trauma that she had :( if she's real, i want to give Sadie a big hug and convince her that that was not her fault. I wish in the future there will be some people who are going to cheer Sadie up, she seems to carry all the burdens without telling anyone. Hope she knows that she is doing her best, and some times it is okay to act like a teenager. The relationship between Sadie and Julius went well, despite "hating" Sadie, Julius protecting her behind, and it's giving-touch-her-and-i'll-kill-you- kind of vibes. Sadly, since its using first pov, we wouldn't know where Julius start to fall for Sadie, but that's okay though hehehe. Hopefully there will be bonus chapter about Sadie and Julius because i need mooreeeeee.
I love this book with my whole heart! Sadie and Julius are the kind of slow burn YA romance that everyone would adored.Everything about this book was 5 stars, from the plot to the romance. I wish it never ended.
Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved sadie, she’s a pathological people pleaser like me 😜 and I totaL relate to her stress when it comes to academics.
I live julius gong, at first I thought he was going to be like henry from if you could see the sun, but i was wrong there both different. I love both characters. And i also live Abigail, loved her character wish i had a friend like that 😭.
Writing: superb
It was great and easy, finished it one sitting, couldn’t stop reading. ANN LIANG IS MY FAVORITE AUTHOR ✍️
I Hope This Doesn't Find You damaged me. Because now I'm looking for my academic rivals to lovers arc. The sheer amount of hate and yearning and tension between Julius and Sadie was so addictive. They were a fiery pairing. Every one of their interactions was so incredibly fun to read, especially because they walked the line between love and hate so tightly. I do wish we'd gotten more of them together and happy, but the way this ended was still adorable.
Also, hate emails over love letters any day!!! I know which one I'd be more likely to accidentally send...
