Everyone Is Watching by Heather Gudenkauf.
The new reality show, “One Lucky Winner” is streaming everywhere. It has everyone watching and wondering “what would you do for $10 million?
Heather is a personal favorite author & did not disappoint with this virtual story!’
A really different thriller. Didn’t think I would like the reality show storyline but it was well written and kept me guessing. Fast read and great thriller
This book is so unique! Think locked room mystery meets reality TV show. I was guessing every chapter at a different bad guy. Five people are selected to be part of a new game show at the chance to win a significant amount of money. However, the challenges associated with winning the money get more and more unethical/dangerous. The book asks the question, "how far will humans go for 10 million dollars?".
This is my first Heather Gudenkauf book and I immediately went to download all her others. Highly recommend this.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I should've known better: I enjoyed Gudenkauf's previous novel, so I for sure wanted to give this one a try, but I have almost never enjoyed any book centered around a reality show, for a variety of reasons. This one didn't break my streak, sadly, though there were twists and other elements that I could appreciate and that were fun.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of “Everyone is Watching” in exchange for an honest review. I was really excited to read this one after my first Gudenkauf: “”The Overnight Guest.” I thought this was an interesting thriller. Contemporary and engaging. I was intrigued by each character’s backstory and it kept me hooked until the end. The resolution was a bit of a turbulent landing for me. I felt like it tried to wrap up things a bit haphazardly, and I would have enjoyed a bit more time and space dedicated to wrapping up everyone’s story. TW for sexual assault.
All I have to see is the name Gudenkauf on a cover and I know that is a book to buy. This latest thriller asks how far would you go to win a fortune? With dynamic and relatable characters in an intriguing setting, Everyone is Watching keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very first page. Gudenkauf's mastery of the genre gets better and better with every book.
I found Everyone Is Watching by Heather Gudenkauf very different from her other books.
Contestants are invited to compete for $10 million dollars on a reality show all of which is live streamed. All of the contestants really need the money and so are very motivated to win no matter how difficult or dangerous the task and no matter whether it can be done fairly or not. The plot was enjoyable and fast moving but I found the resolution difficult to buy.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this digital ARC.
Super interesting premise to the book for sure! Can’t recall a time when I’ve read a game show like novel so it was definitely unique. I did find it a little predictable and guessed the ending before I was there. There was a huge typo where they mixed up the names Nan and Fern around 48% of the book and a few other errors that need edited as well that I hope are caught before the finished book releases. However a solid read, a 3.5 in my book.
<i>"You managed to bring your own Roman Colosseum to life and we're just your unwitting gladiators, turning on each other for personal private enjoyment." </i>
As a huge Big Brother fan as well as thriller fan, this was one book I couldn't put down. The theories kept flying and my eyes were peeled. I also liked the theme/discussion of violence as entertainment (some commenters were demanding the game be stopped while others found entertainment in seeing others in danger). It reminded me of Hunger Games a bit, though less dramatic.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this book!
Everyone is Watching was certainly like nothing I have ever read before. It's a very original thriller - a sort of locked room mystery with a reality tv twist. Five people are selected to be a part of a new game show for the chance to win ten million dollars. With such a big prize at stake, the contestants are willing to do just about anything to win - perhaps even kill.
This is only my second Heather Gudenkauf book and while I think I liked The Overnight Guest a bit more than this one, it was still an entertaining and unique story. Highly recommend - especially if you are a fan of reality tv shows.
This book had multiple narrators, multiple time periods (alternating between current events and past events/flashbacks), and a simulated online response/comment threads, but I was never confused about what was happening! It also felt like an addictive reality show in that there were lots of dramatic reveals and cliffhangers, but with good writing so you really felt like you were there and truly wanted/needed to know what would happen next.
The resolution was also well done without being overly neat or too unrealistic, which is always hard to do when you have to share a big reveal about how everything matches up and what all the characters have in common.
I felt like some of the characters were better developed than others. The "best friend" character felt really well written and genuine, but some of the others (especially the obvious "bad guys") felt a little like caricatures. But maybe predatory men are often such a clearly distasteful type in the real world so it is hard to see beyond that in a book? That was my one complaint - I read faster for some of the scenes with the creepy man because he seemed so predictable and such a clear type (and of course, creepy and disturbing).
Overall, an addictive read with a lot to offer!
This was a wonderful book. A great Thor ill er that kept me guessing the whole time. I would recommend this to all thriller lovers!
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for my honest feedback.
This was quite different from Gudenkauf’s previous work, but no less enjoyable. It was faster-paced for sure and while her other books seem more focused on family/relationship-based mystery, this was all about a live-streamed reality show gone wrong. Fun and full of twists and turns.

"Everyone is Watching" is another great thriller from Heather Gudenkauf. I loved "Overnight Guest" so had to read this immediately. The premise is interesting of a reality show involving revenge and retribution with many twists and turns. Recommended for mystery/suspense lovers. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
This was fine. I don't understand all the subterfuge about the filming location, but get it needed an isolated setting. Some of the motivations of revenge were not great and some of the crimes were not the same.
Wow, this was a very in the moment thriller. I really enjoyed it and have now made Heather one of my must read authors. The premise was very unique with the five contestant reality show. I’m normally not a big fan of reality shows with eliminations but did enjoy this one. At many times during this book I was gasping and quickly turning pages to see what happened next! Thanks for the chance to read an ARC!
This was fun! Reality game show backdrop with of course a little murder mixed in. Flew through this one and was hit with twist after twist. Fans of the genre will enjoy this fast paced thriller!
Thrilling and exciting! I previouslg read The Overnight Guest. I had let it sit for ages before I picked it up. I won't do that with one of Heather Gudenkauf's books again. So I was very excited to received the ARC of this one, and LOVED it. I wish it was longer, I didn't want it to end!
Wow! That was a fun ride! Heather always does a great job with her mystery books. I loved the suspense and I read it really fast because I just couldn’t put it down. Thank you for letting me read this book!
