Be prepared to stop breathing until the last page...
Double Take has got to be one of the best Lynette Eason books that I've read in quite awhile. It started off in a whirlwind and didn't let up for even a moment afterwards. Just when you think you might have it all figured out you can almost hear the words 'plot twist!' And you realize that you still know next to nothing.
One of the things that I found quite interesting, and I appreciated, is that both lead characters deal with PTSD. This gives each of them an understanding of the other's struggles. I also liked how they helped one another instead of just trying to fix the other.
Not only is it a solid start to the Lake City Heroes series but it is quite the novel all on its own. The story is contained and there is a resolution to the mystery by book's end. I spent a lot of time guessing while reading Double Take and I can tell you that in spite of that Lynette Eason still surprised me a little bit by the time I turned the last page of book one in the Lake City Heroes series.
Double Take was a great read, very enjoyable as a romantic suspense, and kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. Now I can't wait to find out where Lynette Eason will take her Lake City Heroes next when book two comes out...
(I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
Double Take by Lynette Eason comes right out of the gate swinging. This story has twists and turns and you may just find yourself holding your breath. Eason gives you just enough information to keep you guessing who-dun-it. This action-packed romantic suspense will make you doubt what you think you know, and leave you questioning...dead or alive. An intense and attention-grabbing start to the new Lake City Heroes series.

Whoa!! This new series by Lynette Eason is off to a stunning start in Double Take! It’s delightfully twisty and mind-bending with some psychological thriller elements, harrowing suspense, and a swoony romance, too. Not to mention the complicated family dynamics, solid friendships, and the separate traumas that both protagonists are still working through. There’s so much to sink your reading teeth into in this book, and I’m still thinking about the wild ride that Eason appears to effortlessly direct from beginning to end.
The prologue kicks us off with a bang, getting my heart rate up right from the start and barely letting it get back to normal until I had turned the last page. If it wasn’t because of the creepy guy who by all appearances seems to be Lainie’s ex … the ex who tried to kill her in the opening scene & who she knows she killed in self-defense that night (except… maybe she’s not so sure after all now) … then my heart was pitterpattering from the delicious chemistry between Lainie and James. Or the gunshots. Or the going-off-of-cliffs. Or the … well, needless to say, you will want to keep reading this book (perhaps with the lights ON) once you start, so be prepared to stay up until the wee hours of the night to finish if needed. I consistently went back and forth between ‘yes he’s definitely alive’ to ‘no, he can’t possibly be’ and finally settled on ‘i don’t even know’ and enjoyed the process.
Lainie and James make a great team, and I loved that they had a long history as friends, practically growing up together with James’s sister & Lainie being BFFs (and Lainie having a crush on James all that time). This allowed us to get past the ‘getting to know you’ formalities and on to the ‘hey I’m seeing you differently all of a sudden’ shift that James is experiencing, and it also lets them be more vulnerable with each other than they might have been otherwise. Considering their respective family issues and PTSD (neither of which go away while trying to keep Lainie safe), having a familiar and safe place to land is critical. Eason has given these two protagonists such deep layers and dimension, and the fact that their relationship brings out the best in each other (and smooths out the rough edges in each) is icing on the cake.
Bottom Line: Double Take is Lynette Eason at her best, and readers are sure to be captivated by the race to figure out who wants to see Lainie dead and why. Smart plotting, action-packed suspense, well-developed characters, and sweet romance made this a truly enjoyable reading experience for me, and I devoured it in one sitting. Which is a good thing because I could not have put it down if I’d wanted to. The faith threads – including some life lessons applicable to anyone – stayed organic to the characters and never felt preachy or forced, allowing the story to flow smoothly from the adrenaline-pounding prologue to the sweetness of the last chapter and every part in between. In short, I absolutely LOVED this book and I think you will too! Already eager for the next one!

This book was a keep my on the edge of my seat mystery. Eason forced me to stay up too late reading, and wondering what was going to happen next. I enjoyed every moment of suspense. Double Take was not one of the books where you can easily guess what’s going to happen next. Solving the mystery of who is after Lanie wasn’t easy either. I enjoyed watching the romance grow between the two main characters. This is a great story of faith, family, and friendships that last a lifetime. I can’t wait to see what Eason writes next! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishers and was in no way forced to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
"Double Take" is the first book in Lynette Eason's new "Lake City Heroes" series. Eason is known for writing gripping mysteries with a bit of clean romance, and this book is no exception! "Double Take" is centered around Lainie Jackson, whose deceased abusive ex-husband doesn't seem to be as dead as previously thought. With the help of cop and former soldier James, Lainie has to uncover the truth behind her husband's reappearance. Along the way, Lainie and James discover that there's more than just friendly feelings between them.
I appreciated the originality of the storyline and enjoyed the clean romance between Lainie and James. However, there were some plot points that I felt were a bit unrealistic and hard to believe. However, I still look forward to reading the next book in this series. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
There are novels that follow a predictable path, then there are the ones with some twists. This book would fall into the latter category with drama, action, angst, and even some romance sprinkled in. The only reason I didn’t give it the final star is because there were a couple loose ends of family drama that I would have really enjoyed seeing closed, perhaps they will be in the next book of the series though! I can’t wait to read them all!! If you enjoy mystery, or want something not so fluffy, this is an excellent choice!! Once you are finished reading it you can even sign up for reminder emails for the next one!
I received a copy of this book as a gift. All options expressed are my own & I received no financial compensation for my reviews
Lynette Eason's main character here, Lainie, feels like dancing for joy. That is how I feel when I find out that this outstanding author written another book! Lainie works in the medical field, and she should know how to tell if someone has died. When her former fiancé learns that Lainie wants to break up, he attempts to kill her, but she turns the gun on him in self-defense. Yet his family thinks he is still living, and she keeps seeing him after he seems to try to attempt to kill her! What could be going on? James works with the police department and he happen to have been the one Lainie has had a crush on for her whole life, as he is her best friend's brother. How the characters grow, with faith, and face multiple deadly situations makes for another excellent book by this wonderful and creative author!
I am so grateful to be able to read this book, compliments to the publisher. The thoughts expressed are my own.
Great book! Clean, engaging, entertaining and will keep you guessing til the very end! Love Lynette Eason and the suspenseful books she writes!
How can I describe Lynette Eason’s latest book Double Take?
Exciting? Yes.
Suspenseful? Absolutely.
Page-Turner? Definitely.
An easy to figure out mystery? Not on your life!!
When someone who is supposed to be dead keeps turning up in the heroine’s life, many questions beg to be answered. It was almost impossible to put this book down while reading because as one question was answered, another one surfaced.
Eason is a master at continuing to write intriguing romantic suspense that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end. I love that the main characters in this novel already knew each other before the story began. Their attraction to each other was easy to believe because they had a back story. The mystery part of the novel was thrilling, extremely puzzling, and often creepy. Eason brought the entire story to a satisfying conclusion which is what I look for in romantic suspense. The inclusion of a faith element added to my enjoyment of the story.
Double Take is not to be missed by readers of clean romantic suspense. It will take you on a thrill ride that is heart -pounding to the very last chapter!
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
It was interesting. Eason always creates a good suspense novel. I would recommend this book to others.
I have read most all of Lynette Eason’s books if not all and this book is certainly one of my favorites. She is after all the Master of suspense and mystery. She’ll keep you guessing from the first chapter until the very last chapter. Her characters are well formed, her descriptions are such that makes you see with the mind’s eye as if you were right there as it is happening…. Lania shot and killed her ex, shooting him in the throat, she watched him as he fell, she checked his pulse he was dead. The police took the report, Self Defense. She attended his funeral, saw the grave. But now he’s back but he can’t be, it’s absolutely impossible but yet it is, she’s seen him, she saw the puckered scar on his throat. She talked with his parents and his brother, they say he is alive he never died, but that cannot be possible. Who is in his grave? She knows he is dead she saw him when he fell. It is impossible that he’s alive… but is he? Has he come back to finish what he started? So much suspense and mystery contained in the pages of this novel that you will certainly enjoy reading it. Thanks to the publisher And NetGalley for the E copy that was given me and I am very happy to leave a review for this great book.
This story was a thrill ride every second. When PA Lainie gets in with the wrong guy, it becomes a fight for her life. She is doing better after he is dead, or is he. This whole story had my head reeling and trying to figure out how it was possible. James Cross is her best friend's brother and on the police force. He tries to help her unravel the mystery of why she is still a target.
What follows is a mind-stretching thrill ride that maintains tension throughout. If you like Christian Romantic Suspense, this book hits all the high notes.
Lynette Eason creates a fantastic and believable world in Lake City. I was sucked in and the book didn't let go of me. I have been thinking about it since I finished it and even when I was forced to put it down for things like work and sleep.
This story was so good and it looks like the first set in this particular world so I look forward to reading more.
I received an early copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
So, this review starts off with a big WOW. I was significantly engrossed in this story and how the characters were going to make it. I had a hard time putting this story down as the characters were presented with scenarios that just didn't make sense. I mean how could it. The man who is causing Lainie to fear for her life, and for good reason, is supposed to be dead. And at Lainie's own hand. Is this her ex-boyfriend who wouldn't take no for an answer, or someone who is trying to finish what he started?
Her best friend's brother and her once upon a time crush, James Cross is a detective who has just moved back to town. He has made it his mission to help Lainie get to the bottom of this stalker with nefarious plans against Lainie and help her understand that she is not losing her mind. He's got her back, but what happens when the evil seems to always be one step ahead?
This was a riveting suspense that will keep the reader up at night and quite possibly make said reader make sure no one is following them. This was a story that not only offers suspense, but romance, second chances, and being able to come home again.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book. From the very beginning, we meet Lainie in a life altering moment. Surely the rest of the story couldn't keep me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Over and over, I found myself holding my breath, waiting with Lainie and James, to see how this web of mystery would unravel. I sure did not expect the ending! What a page turner! Loved getting a copy of this book!
As her life moves on she has finally come to a point where she is comfortable in her own skin. But someone is after her to make sure she doesn’t see another day. They go to extremes to make it look like an accident. Who and why would they do this? it only looks like she is seeing her dead fiancé or is she. Her past and her family need boundaries, will this period in her life help her get a balanced life. The police office that she has helped had taken it upon himself to protect her not only from this person but from herself. But who will help him with his family. Leaning on each other and on God this phase in life comes together to for His master plan.

Double Take by Lynette Eason was a winner-read for me. Ms. Eason never fails to intrigue me and keep me reading far into the night. Her novels are page-turners and keep the reader thoroughly engrossed in the story.
This book, in particular, kept me guessing to the very end. Just when you think you have it all figured out and that the heroine is safe, something else happens to put everyone in jeopardy again.
Physician Assistant Laine Jackson is eighteen months out from an attempted murder by her ex. She had to kill him to survive. Now someone is targeting her with deadly force which she thinks is retribution. Did her ex really die? Or is he perpetrating situations that could kill her?
Detective James Cross is with the police department after the Army’s CID unit gave him a medical discharge after an IED blew up and wounded him. He and his buddy team up to try to keep Laine safe, but everything they do is somehow known by the stalker who continues to try to murder them both. Excellent writing and strong characters make this book a keeper.
This is the first book in the Lake City Heroes series, I can not wait to read more from this series. I fell in love with many of the characters in this book and look forward to hearing more from them. I can only speculate on which ones will be in book 2. Lynette Eason has a way of grabbing your interest and keeping in through the entire book. They are usually fast paced, high octane and keep you up later than you want because you can not find a place to stop. Detective James Cross, whom I just loved, Has returned home with some baggage. When he finds himself helping his little sisters best friend, Lainie Jackson, will he be able to keep her alive and solve this bizarre situation she finds herself in. Lanie can not believe James has come into her work place, yet it seam like God directed his path as she really needs his help and protection. As stated already this book is full of action, mystery, drama, family, friends, energy, and of course romance. I can not wait for the next one. I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.
4.5*’s What a fantastic suspenseful ride Eason took me on! This was my first read by this author and I’m intrigued to read more! Lannie has PTSD after her abusive relationship end when she has to kill her ex Adam, to save her own life. 18 months late her life yet again becomes on the line. The only thing is everything that happens points to people thinking Adam is alive still. Lannie however, believes her gut when she said it’s not him. But has no idea who would want to convince her other wise. Lannie and her best friend’s brother, who is on the police force, set out to find who is behind the encounters with the Adam or Adam’s look a like. While this happens Lannie and James get to know each other and their families as adults.
James and Lannie also have some amazing friendships that you get to see through out the book as well. The faith was light but yet played vital parts of the characters stories.
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
There aren’t many books I like better than the start of a new series by Lynette Eason, and Double Take doesn’t disappoint. Seriously now. This book. First of all, a quick overview.
Physician Assistant Lainie is rebuilding her life after her ex tried to kill her. She only survived by grabbing the gun and shooting him. But now someone wants her to think he’s still alive and back to take revenge.
Detective James Cross is also making a fresh start after injuries from an IED forced him to leave his career as an Army Investigator. Now he must work with Lainie to figure out what is true and what’s an illusion. Before anyone gets killed.
This is a Lynette Eason books so we can take some things for granted: the characters leap from the page and have us cheering for them very quickly. The action scenes pull you right in. The love story that grows is deftly handled, just enough but it doesn’t fully dominate. But beyond this the overriding takeaway is how clever this plot is. How well conceived and delivered. I was guessing until really near the end. And all that to say, I read this in two days. That speaks volumes. I do have a busy life.
I received a copy of Double Take from the publisher, via NetGalley. The opinions and gushing are all my own.
A great psychological thriller. Lainie is seeing a dead man, or is she? James is trying to protect her from whoever is after her and also figure out who is targeting her. This book is full of action and suspense from the very beginning. it pulls you in from the first page and doesn't let go. I think this is the best story yet from the author.
