Double Take by Lynette Eason is her first book in the Lake City Heroes series and it will not disappoint. Laine Jackson almost lost her life when her fiancé tried to kill her when she broke things off with him. She only survived by killing him herself. Now, though, he seems to be back and is intent on causing her pain. With the help of her childhood friend (and crush) James Holton, can they get to the bottom of this before Laine really does lose her life? Interesting and fast paced, it will keep you guessing until the end. I had no idea what was going to happen!
Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and enjoy. I definitely will be looking forward to the next book in the series!
Lainie is witty, has regular faults plus dealing with PTSD from an abusive situation that ended badly. Along with her childhood crush, James, he tries to keep her safe. Protection as a cop stretches him to his limit in this tale of phenomenal proportions.
The suspense had me on the edge of my seat through the entire story and I was barely able to take a breath before something else blindsided me. Double Take is a story not to be missed. It was non-stop action from the beginning.
I received an ARC from the publisher and voluntarily chose to review it. A positive is not required and all opinions are my own
Nothing sucks you in quite like a Lynette Eason book. Before you know it you’re on Chapter 15 at 1am… which is exactly what happened to me! I truly enjoyed getting to know Lainie and James- two people with a lot of baggage but who also don’t know the word quit. I enjoyed their journey- not only to love, which was super sweet- but also their journey into understanding themselves and their familial relationships. Those layers gave this story so much depth! And the mystery/suspense!! So good as always- oh my goodness I was second guessing my assumptions the whole time right along with the characters. In retrospect I saw signs, but I never fully guessed what was going on until the reveal. I’m also super excited for more stories in this series about Lainie’s friend group. I already can’t wait to get my hands on book 2. If you like romantic suspense, run to the store to grab this one! I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I received a complementary copy of this book from the author and publisher. I was not asked to leave a positive review. My opinions are completely my own.
In this psychological thriller, Lainie and her former crush James are determined to get to the truth. In the process, they have to fight to stay alive. This book is a tightly written corkscrew of a race against a twisted mind that is determined to take Lainie on a twisty ride that ends in one destination: her death. Readers who love romantic suspense will love every page of Lynette's latest novel.
My endorsement of this fantastic novel!
Wow! This romantic suspense story has so many twists and turns, it almost makes one's head hurt. Just when you think you've got things figured out, you don't, or at least not quite in the way you thought, but then maybe you do, or not...and so it continues. Lynette Eason fans are going to be thrilled with this latest book, and it's kind of cool that she gave a shout out to fellow romantic suspense author Lynn H. Blackburn.
Laine Jackson is questioning just how severe her PTSD has become when she begins to see someone who appears to be her dead ex-fiance lurking about. She knows it can't be him, after all she is the one who killed him! Detective James Cross, who also deals with PTSD following his honorable discharged from the military, had always thought of Laine as just one of his sister's friends, but she had changed in his absence. Now he feels drawn to her, and drawn to protect her, but from whom? Reader's will greatly enjoy finding out the answer to that question.
I am very grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Double Take from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Lainie is a physican assistant, a job she loves. It's only been eighteen months since her boyfriend, Adam, attempted to kill her, but she was able to get the gun from him and shoot him in the neck. She watched as paramedics worked on him and he died. She had finally realized he was not a kind man-not the type of man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. Yet, his murder attempt came as a shock. Adam, obviously, did not take the break up well.
Now, eighteen months later, attempts are being made on her life, and she sees Adam's face each time. How can that be? She watched him die. She is convinced it is not Adam, but someone who looks like him attempting to scare her. The plan is working.
Lainie's best friend, Stephanie's, brother James has returned to town and is working as a Detective. His family doesn't know he's back. There is much friction between James and his father. His father feels James made career choices just to spite him.
Not only is James the brother of Lainie's best friend, but Lainie has harbored a secret crush on James for many years. Now, they are thrown together as an attempt is made to discover who is making attempts on Lainie's life and stalking her.
Great characters! I loved Lainie and James together! This story, I could hardly put down. Lots of twists and turns. It kept me wondering if Adam was truly dead or alive. And, if alive, then who looked like him and had a death wish for Lainie.
If you, also, enjoy Christian fiction, suspense, action, and romance, I highly recommend this book! This author, Lynette Eason, never disappoints!
I wish given an advanced ecopy by the publisher, Revell, through Netgalley. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.
This is the first in a new series from Eason. The plot is quite involved and seemed almost beyond belief. The villain's motive was reasonable but the amount of planning and work and the number of people that went into exercising the nefarious deed was a bit much. Eason said in her notes this was a difficult plot to flesh out and I believe it.
Nonetheless, it is a good psychological thriller. We are kept in the dark about the truth of who is out to kill Lainie and why. There are some good suspense scenes. The romance aspect is subtle, done well, and takes a back seat to the mystery. I like that. The characters are developed well and Eason's writing style is a pleasure to experience. A faith message is present but mostly vague.
I liked the novel, even if I thought too much work and too many people were involved in the villain's work. I do enjoy a good inspirational romantic suspense and look forward to more in this series.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence, Stalking, PTSD, & Panic Attacks
Having really enjoyed some of this author’s recent books, I was excited to read the start of this new series! Based on Laney’s friend group I would say this is going to be a 4 to 6 book series, which is fun. Kenzie, a SWAT medic; Jesslyn, a fire marshal, Kristine, an air marshal; and maybe even Allison, a doctor, and Stephanie (who I’m not sure what she does?).
I liked Lainie because she was realistic in the way she reacted and responded to everything that was happening and what she was going through. I really liked a certain scene of her standing up for James. I do wish she would have carried her gun on her where she could, as that could have helped in some cases. She told him her story (with domestic violence) very fast, but I guess it was okay because they kind of already knew each other because she’s his little sister’s best friend? It just seems like a lot of information being thrown at us at once, but it wasn’t too much to handle, which I appreciated!
It really felt like my brain was working overtime trying to figure things out and who was bothering Lainie. I had figured part of it out (the reason) but not all of it (the who). One piece of the puzzle felt a little too convenient at the end and the ending was a little off to me (they made a decision that didn’t feel like a smart one, but it all worked out because of the people they were with), but elsewise was very intense most of the time. I’m obviously not a violent person, but I would have liked to join James in smacking a certain person. ;)
So while this book is not a new favorite by this author, I did really enjoy it. Definitely has a trigger for domestic violence, stalking, PTSD, and panic attacks, though. Because both main characters have PTSD from past events and we see it on-page. Older girls that aren’t extremely sensitive to those topics and like suspense books, may really enjoy this one. I’m looking forward to Kenzie and Cole’s story releasing later this year.

I loved this faith-based thriller which is the first book in the Lake City Heroes series.
Physician's Assistant Lainie Jackson was engaged to Adam Williams. When she realized how controlling and abusive he was, she broke off the engagement and he tried to kill her. But she ended up shooting him dead instead.
Now, eighteen months later, someone is trying to kill Lainie again and the person looks remarkably like Adam - and his family says he really didn't die. Detective James Cross comes to Lainie's rescue more than once and despite both of them suffering from PTSD, romance plays a part in the story as well.
I highly recommend this story with all its twists and turns.
I received this Digital Review Copy from Revell Books through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review. This is that review.
Lynette Eason kicks off her Lake City Heroes series with the tense and twisty Double Take, which released January 9 from Revell. Lainie’s fiancé died the night she had to defend herself against his attempt to murder her. After a year and a half of working through the physical and mental fallout, she’s doing pretty well. At least, she was doing alright until the dead man made another attempt on her life. When James, brother of her good friend and also her secret childhood crush, lands in her hospital for care after getting shot on the job, Lainie has to admit it wouldn’t hurt to have him on her side as someone who looks just like her dead fiancé is targeting her. Together, Lainie and James work to unravel the mysterious stalker’s plan and to help mend the damaged relationships in James’s family. Eason writes all of this with great skill, drawing the reader in for the duration and creating characters you’re sure to respond to strongly, for better or for worse.
Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me a copy to read and review. All opinions expressed here are my own and are completely genuine.
3.5⭐️
This book starts off with a bang. Literally.
Very intense right away with continuing sudden events and surprising twists along the way.
I enjoyed the two lead characters, a female physicians assistant with past trauma and her soldier-turned-detective counterpart. Though they both had major baggage from their families, they had strong friends for support which was nice to read about. The book is full of both action and dialogue. The conversations come off as genuine and you don’t have to read very far before another major event happens.
As far as Detective procedurals go, this book seems realistic at parts and unlikely at others; for example, the law enforcement allowing a civilian to tag along on many aspects of the investigation. I also wonder if there are actually people out there that experience this many near-death experiences and convenient life-saving moments. I was also a but surprised by how fast the romance moved and questioned its wisdom when it launched in the midst of major trauma - but it’s a story so it’s allowed to have a happily ever after ☺️.
🫣: suspenseful and tense moments, death
😇: Christian publisher (Revell), conversations about healing and forgiveness, characters praying
😍: a few innocent kisses
🤐: no language!
I received a complimentary ebook in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Eighteen months after she shot her ex in self defense, physician assistant Lainie Jackson is run off the road by a man who looks suspiciously similar to her dead ex fiancé. When the man continues appearing to her and leaving threatening notes, Lainie turns to her best friend’s brother, detective James Cross, for help. Despite battling his own demons after being recently discharged from the Army, James decides to do whatever it takes to protect Lainie and find out who exactly wants her dead.👥
Double Take is an exciting start to Lynette Eason’s newest romantic suspense series! This story starts with a bang (literally shots are fired on page one), and it is chock full of action and suspense. I loved how authentic and relatable Lainie and James were, and I thought their faith was woven into the story well. (I also loved that little Lynn Blackburn cameo.😉) With Cole and Kenzie being introduced in this book, I can’t wait to read their story in the next book that releases later this year!💙
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A big thank you to Lynette Eason and Revell Books for sending me a copy of this book!📘
In the book Double Take, author Lynette Eason writes about Physician Assistant Lainie Jackson who killed her husband 18 months ago in self-defense. But is he really dead? Or is he back from the dead to finish killing Lainie? Enter childhood friend Detective James Cross to help keep Lainie alive and figure out who is trying to kill her. What will they uncover? And can James defeat his own demons from his past? This was a good mystery that kept you guessing. Had some romance and relationship struggles included. I would highly recommend this book. I received a copy of this ebook from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fantastic read and I will absolutely be following this author in the future. Romance suspense is my favorite genre and add in Spirituality too??? Amazing.
Lynette Eason starts the New Year off with a bang in her new series! Double Take is a fantastic romantic suspense read with all the right stuff!
Lainie Jackson is still trying to deal with the fact that her fiancé tried to kill her and she ended up killing him in self-defense. It’s been 18 months, and she wants to move on but when she thinks she sees him at the hospital where she works, all the bad memories come back. When an attempt is made on her life, she can’t help but think maybe he is back for revenge. She receives help from Detective James Cross, the brother of one of her longest friends. James finds his work cut out for himself trying to keep Lainie safe and the more time they spend together the more attraction they find to each other and the more danger they encounter.
I’ve read a lot of Romantic suspense and this one is by far at the top of the list. The way Lynette Eason crafted this story had me hooked and wanting nothing more than to see these characters find a safe and happy ending. The cat and mouse gam that Lainie was thrown into made the tension rise with each page turned. This looks to be the start of an amazing series and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here. A lot of authors I read have gotten into the habit of writing the same types of stories that just aren’t interesting after a while; Eason is above the rest and only gets better with each book she writes!
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.
Lynette Eason is a fabulous suspense writer. The characters are well developed. There's a good plot. The action is intense. It's hard to put the book down. It's a great read no matter what you're looking for.
I liked both Lainie and James. They have known each other for years but James finally notices her as an adult woman after she helps him in the hospital. When things keep happening to Lainie, he's determined to protect her no matter the cost to himself. I like series that have a solid friend or work group and this one fits that bill. I can't wait to read more about Kenzie and Cole.
Thank you to Revell for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I say this every time, but Lynette Eason’s books just never disappoints, and this story had me guessing and confused throughout the whole book. I do not know how Lynette Eason does it, but each new series and each new book has a plot I never read before.
An author that gets this right and keeps me in suspense, is an author worth on your TBR.
With a stalker, which might or might not be a deceased ex, this story kept me up till late in the evening. I loved every second I spent time with the characters and am looking forward to the series.
Settle in to have your socks blown of with this nerve-wracking story!! Lynette you owe me a manicure, chewed my nails to try and lighten the suspense! Once you start you won't be able to stop. The suspense and questions: is he or is he not? Will keep you guessing and biting your nails till near the end. Expertly written! Suspense, drama, romance, family, friends, fear, hope and most of all faith all wrapped in a brilliant story! Cannot wait for the next release in this new series!
I absolutely loved this psychological thriller! Its great pace kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing! Loved the element of surprise and not knowing what was coming next. Each puzzle piece fit together so well by the end, I kept saying I should have seen it coming but was glad I did not.
As a reader who reads a lot of romantic suspense, it takes a lot to surprise and entertain me. Eason did a fantastic job of doing both. This story offered varying levels of intensity, a few harrowing moments that had me holding my breath and was well written.
I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters, and while I was hoping for a bit more romance than the typical “can’t-enter-a-relationship-because-I-have-to-keep-her-safe” thread, I still loved the dynamic between the love interests and their character arcs. Each overcame some pretty big obstacles. They were relatable, deep and authentic. There were solid threads of faith, family, brokenness, restoration, friendship and love. There were also some sweet, lighthearted moments that made me smile. Overall, I had all the feels during this new release and enjoyed it immensely!
Content and Trigger Warnings: PG, Clean. Mild tones - attempted murder, self-defense shooting, kidnapping, PTSD, hoarding, emotional abuse, stalking, mention of suicide.

Lynette Eason Weaved a Story That Will Keep You Guessing!
I am a fan of Lynette Eason’s book and I have to say this book has been one at the top on my list. She has pulled out no stops for suspense and I am always intrigued when I’m unsure of my “guess” and I’m not able to pin it down…. And its drawn me out to the very end.
All the characters are well developed and very interesting. Lainie is a strong woman who has a faith that shows. James is strong and swoon worthy!
I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book! I need to go find out who the main characters are!
