Double Take is the first book in a new series by Lynette Eason. Be prepared, this is one heart pounding, roller coaster ride from the very beginning. It is also a book that I found almost impossible to put down. I was on the fence with the idea that the man who has attempted to kill Physician Assistant Lainie Jackson, nearly succeeding was alive. As more and more characters decided he must be it became more difficult to believe that Lainie was right.
Never does this action and emotional pack story slow down. I now find the enigmatic plot along with the conclusion to be unforgettable. The development of the characters, especially Lainie and Detective James Cross was excellent. Now I hope that there are many more books in this outstanding series.
The publisher through Net Galley provided a complimentary digital copy. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, my personal opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
Great beginning to a new series. This starts off with a horrifying scene of attack and Lainie acts on self defense, something she will always question. She is left to live peacefully as a Physician Assistant until someone dangerously taunts and stalks her. Her gut tells her it’s not Adam, her attacker, but who else could it be? Her friends are with her the whole time and she relies heavily on James and Cole for their investigation techniques. James and Lainie have been childhood friends but these events have put them into a different category. I was on pins and needles the entire time, the story twisting with new clues it was easy to enjoy and get lost in the puzzle. There are thoughtful lessons on God, relationships and trusting yourself. Eason is an author I always enjoy reading as her style is highly entertaining. I got to enjoy an early copy and have written this review voluntarily.
Double Take by Lynette Eason will take your breath away. It kicks off what promises to be an intense and action-packed series!
Lainie Jackson is seeing ghosts. After her stalker ex was killed, Lainie starts seeing him pop up in places. But he’s dead, right? Police detective James Cross, also her childhood crush, comes to her rescue to make sure her ex can’t hurt her, whether he’s alive or dead.
Double Take brings action and suspense with every flip of the page. I love James and his over-protective family. But James has some relationship issues to deal with and Lainie needs to learn to trust again. I love the high stakes physical danger and emotional drama woven throughout the story and I can’t wait for more in this series!
I received an ebook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I received a complimentary copy of Double Take and it was fabulous. I was not disappointed in it as always by Lynette Eason! Her books are suspenseful and exciting to read. Great storyline of action, romance and trusting God through it.
Hands down Lynette Easons best suspense book ever! With so many twists and edge of your seat nail biting moments, this book should come with a warning label to not start it at midnight… stayed up until 4 in the morning to finish it lol!
HEART-STOPPING THRILLER!
Double Take (Lake City Heroes, Book #1) by Lynette Eason is a heart-stopping thriller! This is one of those novels that will take you in from the first sentence, and you will not want to put it down until you have read the last word. It is dynamic, entertaining, engaging, brilliant, and compelling. Eason has chosen her two main characters, Detective James Cross and Physician Assistant Lainie Jackson, to be realistic characters, and they exhibit vulnerabilities that enable them to learn the importance of depending on each other. While running for their lives, will they learn to run to each other? Do not miss this heart-stopping thriller!!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this novel by Revell and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own and without influence.
Double Take" is a book that has it all from suspense, romance and will have you guessing on who was really after Lainie Jackson. Is it her ex alive or died. She hopes that with the help of James Cross, her friends brother, they can figure it out together.
Double Take is a easy read and you get pulled into the story by the very first page! It was very hard to put the book down to do the housework. The characters were well written and the writing style of the author had the storyline flowing nicely! I liked the fact that Lord was very important throughout the story. I highly recommend that you put "Double Take" on your must read book list for 2024!
I received this complimentary copy from the author through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone.
Double Take by Lynette Eason takes readers on an exhilarating journey with ideal pacing through suspense, faith, and romance, leaving them breathless and craving more. From the very intense opening scene, the narrative seizes attention, refusing to loosen its grip until the final, satisfying conclusion.
The characters in Double Take are not merely ink on paper; they come alive with authenticity and depth. Lainie's unwavering resilience and James' protective instinct capture the reader's heart. Lynette Eason skillfully intertwines their personal struggles within a riveting plot, achieving a delicate balance of heart-wrenching emotion, pulse-pounding action, and profound faith. As we witness Lainie's intimate prayers, such as 'God, give me strength. No, be my strength, Please,' and James' acknowledgment of human limitations—'… I can't save everyone. It sounds harsh, I know, but all I can do is the job I’ve been assigned – and called to do – in that given moment and pray that God takes care of the rest.'—the narrative delves into the profound intersection of humanity, vulnerability, and the direction and solace found in the Christian faith. These moments add a layer of relatability to the characters, making their journey all the more compelling.
The plot is a rollercoaster of unexpected twists and turns, keeping me guessing at every corner. Eason's skill in crafting suspenseful narratives is on full display, and the psychological depth of the mystery surrounding Lainie's past kept me on the edge of my seat. The incorporation of the Christian faith adds the perfect foundation and essential layer to the story, reminding readers of the strength found in trust and reliance on God.
One of the standout features of Double Take is the exploration of PTSD, bringing a level of realism and relatability to the characters. Eason delicately addresses this topic, weaving it seamlessly into the threads of the story, enhancing the characters' complexity and the overall narrative.
The romantic aspect of the book is beautifully executed, adding a sweet and tender layer to the fast-paced suspense. The relationship between Lainie and James is both heartwarming and realistic, creating a satisfying emotional payoff.
Double Take is a riveting page-turner that seamlessly blends suspense, romance, and biblical truths. Lynette Eason has once again proven her mastery in the genre, delivering a must-read for fans of thrilling mysteries with a faith-focused touch. I wholeheartedly recommend Double Take to anyone seeking an immersive and satisfying reading experience.
I received a digital copy of Double Take from Revell via NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased evaluation. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on this story’s spectacular content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
Laine Jackson survived a murder attempt at the hands of her ex when she managed to grab the weapon and kill him instead. Eighteen months later, she is starting to piece her life back together except now she keeps seeing his face everywhere, and someone is trying to kill her.
Detective James Cross joined the Lake City Police Department after being honorably discharged from the military due to wounds sustained on duty. He is working on figuring out life after the military and navigating family dynamics. When it becomes evident that someone wants Laine dead, he determines to find the threat and keep Laine safe at all costs.
It’s been a while since I picked up a Lynette Eason novel, and after reading Double Take, I’m wondering why. She’s a master at creating page turners. I zoomed through this fast-paced mystery. Intriguing characters, vivid settings, and riveting suspense left me clamoring for more.
My one issue is that the villain and his motives remain hidden until almost the end so the reader doesn’t really have the opportunity to uncover his identity. While I love reaching a reveal and not knowing whodunit, I want it to be because I didn’t figure it out, not because the clues are lacking or come too late. Nonetheless, that didn’t keep me from enjoying this story as attested in the fact that I read it within 24 hours. I definitely recommend this to mystery and suspense fans who want edge-of-the-seat but not gruesome. Personally, I can’t wait for book two.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this ARC publication for an honest review.
This was a great on the edge of your seat book with mystery and romance. Our main characters, Lainie and James both suffer from past trauma and share a history (James is Lainey's best friend's brother) I enjoyed their reconnection as adults and how they supported each other spiritually and physically as they fight to stay alive. The romance was not forced, and the relationship seemed a natural progression. You truly root for them as a couple. The burning question: is Lainie's ex the one trying to kill her even though she shot (and killed him!) in self-defense the last time he tried to kill her. A lot of twists and turns and a satisfying start to a new series!
4 stars
Double Take by Lynette Eason opens with a prologue that keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you completely invested in this story and these characters! It was unexpected and completely shocking! Shortly after, we are introduced to James and his job. This was such an intense situation that I’m sure I was once again holding my breath the entire time I was reading it. Whew!
Once we truly get into the meat of the story, desperately trying to figure out who is trying to kill Lainie, I flipped back and forth between Adam is for sure dead and Adam is for sure alive. I couldn’t wait to figure it all out. While I really enjoyed so many aspects of this story, by the end, I felt like I was cheated a bit with how everything played out and a few questions that plagued me throughout the story were left unanswered.
That being said, there are a lot of suspenseful situations in this story that will keep you on the edge of your seat all while trying to figure out who’s alive, who’s dead, and just who’s trying to kill Lainie and why!
I received a complimentary copy of the story. All opinions are my own.
Double Take by Lynette Eason
This book was action packed from the very first page. I seriously could not put it down and I was so invested in finding out what would happen and how it all would end. This story was well written and the characters felt real. This story line was full of twists and so much suspense. I loved it.
This is the first book in the Lake City series and I will definitely be lining up as soon as the next one is out!
I highly recommend this book and loved every minute of it.
This book does have Christian elements and romance all wrapped in an intense suspense story.
#DoubleTake #NetGalley
Lynette Eason is an absolute master at creating romantic suspense stories that will keep me on the edge of my seat and Double Take was no exception. Right from the very start, I found myself drawn into the story and it kept its fast pace and excitement right through to the end. After a car accident, Lainie sees her ex-fiancé... the only problem? He's supposed to be dead. But is he really? There were so many twists and turns and signs pointing in all directions that just when I'd think I'd figured it all out, I'd find myself doubting again... in the very best way possible. There were definitely some twists that I did figure out fairly early on... but still plenty more that kept things interesting. I absolutely love that in a suspense read!
Both main characters were dealing with PTSD which not only added a great element to their story... but I think is also something that we need to see more of too, so I really appreciated that. The romance was balanced beautifully with the suspense, and I found I really enjoyed these two together. There were also some really good messages of faith and setting boundaries as well.
If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense, you'll absolutely want to check this one out!
**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Lynette Eason has delivered a can’t-put-it-down start to her new Lake City Heroes series with “Double Take.”
When physician’s assistant Lainie Jackson starts thinking she sees her dead ex-fiance, and near tragic events keep happening, she starts to question her sanity, and her safety.
Cole Garrison, Lainie’s best friend Steph’s brother, finds himself under Lainie’s care after being shot while on duty. He quickly learns of what’s happening to Lainie and offers to help her solve the odd case while he recovers from his injury. As they search deeper and deeper into if her fiancé Adam is truly still alive, and if not who is going through the effort to act as him and harm her, they begin to draw closer to each other. Can they overcome past issues from their lives and learn to trust and rely on each other?
Eason, as always, does an incredible job of developing a plot full of twists and turns, always leaving the reader guessing and wanting more. She also adds just the right amount of romance, all while creating great characters.
She also fills “Double Take” with some great themes, like learning to trust; overcoming one’s past; shouldering burdens and what happens when we take on too many; don’t quit and do what it takes to never give up; and rely on God for help.
Fans of romantic thrillers and authors like Irene Hannon, Colleen Coble and Patricia Bradley will love “Double Take,” which is due out Jan. 9.
Five stars out of five.
Revell provided this complimentary copy through NetGalley for my honest, unbiased review.
Lynette Eason has done it again, another edgy, suspenseful read with a romance brewing amidst danger and action. PA Lainie Jackson has PTSD from her former fiancé Adam Williams. He tried to kill her but as they fought, she got the gun and shot him. He died. Why is he now showing up at the hospital or different places. He even ran her off a mountain road. Her best friend's brother, Detective James Cross, is someone that she has had a crush on since she was a young girl. When he showed up in the ER after being shot at a hostage situation and she treated him, she mentioned what was going on. Thankfully, his vest took the brunt of the bullet. Former military, James also suffers from PTSD. He and Cole, his partner, set out to keep Lainie safe and find answers. Someone wants her to think that Adam is alive by erasing all records of his death. She knows he is dead. Right? James and Cole have doubts. This book has twists, turns, and quite a mystery to solve. I am looking forward to the nest in this new series where we read Cole's story. Highly recommended.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. All thoughts are mine only.
I could not put this book down there where so many twist and turns I wasn't sure what was going to happen next. While some of the story was calm/slow pace even in this moments made you wonder who was after Lainie. I liked Lainie even though with her family she was a "push over", I feel like we all have those moment so it made her very relatable. James was very reserved but the author made who so relatable as well. I will say I want to know more about Cole he was so active in this book it leaves you wanting more from him. Overall this book was a great read and the author kept it clean so suitable for all those suspense readers out there.
Double Take by Lynette Eason is a gripping suspense novel that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. The story follows the protagonist, Heather, as she navigates through a web of deceit, danger, and unexpected twists. The author skillfully weaves together a tale of mystery and intrigue, keeping the readers guessing until the very last page.
Eason's writing style is both engaging and fast-paced, making it difficult to put the book down. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is full of unexpected surprises that will leave readers eager to uncover the truth alongside the protagonist.
The novel's themes of resilience, courage, and the resilience of the human spirit make it a compelling read for young adults. It also raises important questions about trust, loyalty, and the lengths one would go to protect their loved ones.
I highly recommend this book.
Double Take opens a new series cycle Lynette Eason. It’s action packed with a lovely side of romance.
Lainie Jackson is still moving on from almost being killed by her fiancé 18 months ago when it starts to look like he might not be dead.
James Cross has his own demons to fight. He has become a police detective after getting out of the military. James is brother to Lainie’s best friend Stephanie.
James and Lainie cross paths and James gets involved with keeping Lainie safe from whoever it is that is coming after her - even if it might be the fiancé who is supposed to be dead.
There is a nice balance in the suspense. I was pulled in and wanted to see how it would turn out but I wasn’t tense and terrified like with some romantic suspense.
I really enjoyed reading Double Take and I’m excited for the whole series of the Lake City Heroes.
Thanks to Netgalley and Revell for the opportunity to review this book.
Buckle up! Get ready for nonstop action, suspense, romance and mystery as Lynette Eason weaves another fantastic romantic suspense story that’s impossible to put down. It’s the beginning of a new series and I’m so excited for more.
Lainie Jackson is a physical therapist who was engaged to the wrong guy. Right off the bat, the book begins with an intense scene where we find out how Lainie escapes his clutches and he dies. Or did he? Skip forward 18 months later and Lainie is just starting to put her life back together. She gets in a car accident and thinks she sees her ex-fiancé who’s supposed to be dead. It’s clear someone is out to get her, but is it Adam or someone else?
Detective James Cross has known Lainie, his little sister’s best friend, since she was a child. He’s back in Lake City, North Carolina working as a police officer after being honorably discharged from the army. When he meets up with Lainie again, he’s impressed with the intelligent, attractive woman she’s become. When it’s clear her life is in danger, he does all in his power to protect her and discover who is out to get her.
I loved Lainie and James! Both had complicated family relationships and I enjoyed how they helped each other deal with difficult family members. They were so good for each other and so encouraging. I loved their romance and watching their relationship change over the course of the book.
The suspense was so good! It was nonstop with so many fantastic twists and turns throughout. Just when I’d thought I’d figured out what had happened, I was thrown for a loop. It’s intense and I guarantee it’ll be hard not to read in one sitting. Now I can’t wait to get Cole’s story, James’ friend and fellow officer.
Highly recommend to romantic suspense fans! It’s an amazing start to an exciting new series. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.
Thank you to NetGalley and to Libro.fm for the ARC and ALC of Double Take by Lynette Eason. All opinions are my own.
Before reading this book, I had heard of Lynette Eason but had never read any of her books, but now I would love to read more.
I don’t typically read thrillers, but the premise that included a romance and the fact that the author writes Christian fiction intrigued me enough to give it a try.
I really ended up enjoying this book so much that I listened to the whole book in one day.
It’s the kind of story that you just can’t put down because you want to know what happens next. I also couldn’t guess the mystery aspect at all, so the reveal at the end was great.
The faith elements really added to the story, and I found them to be realistic and relatable.
The audiobook was excellent, and I definitely recommend it if you like audiobooks.
Overall, I would recommend this book if you’re looking for a fast-paced book with an unpredictable plot, lovable characters, and a sweet romance.
