This is my first Kate Johnson read and I really enjoyed how fun it was! This book had magic and romance mixed with with and charm and I am very impressed at how well it wound together. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review.

Hex and the City

This book put a spell on me! The Hex and the City was a cozy fall read that captured me right from the beginning. The characters in this book made me laugh, and overall worked so well together. The main character Poppy accidentally put a hex on a necklace one evening after having one too many drinks after work. Stumbling into the shop where she sold all things related to magic including cauldrons, gemstones and potions, she put a hex on a necklace in vengeance of her ex-girlfriend who had cheated on her. To her surprise when the necklace is sold to Alex a stage magician, Poppy is determined to locate the necklace and remove the hex, however, it isn’t as easy as it sounds. The hex caused havoc, something that Poppy knows all too well. She never meant to cause anyone harm, but now is left picking up the pieces. Through this story Poppy and Alex go searching for the hexed amulet and try to bring back some positive magic back into their lives. Through this adventure including some ghost hunting, the story explores different realms of magic, impulsivity, love, family, friendship, uncovering mysteries, and more so discovering the truth. What I liked most about the book, were the characters. The author did a great job and creating characters that felt so real, who were quirky and fun, and yet relatable. The author did a great job telling this story, and it is a great cozy fall read.

This was a super cute witchy rom com for spooky season, I truly loved the Sex And The City vibes I got from Hex And The City!

Hex and the City is a trainwreck - which may have been the point. Poppy's life is chaos, when she accidentally curses an amulet that gets sold to stage magician Axl Storm - she tracks him down to save him from a curse - which turns into more dramatics, questionable choices and time travel.

This book is all over the place. Is is bad that my favourite character is Poppy's hair? This is very much a manic pixie dream girl scenario, which is not a trope I tend to enjoy. Your mileage may vary.

I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.

Oh I was SO excited by this description - witches, Highgate Cemetery, London, a magic shop... this is my dream context. Unfortunately this was a disappointed. The main character is not quirky - she's just random and chaotic and pretentious and exhausting. The writing was immature and girlish - quotes like "Impatient, she grabbed his hand and shoved it inside her knickers, and he found exactly what he wanted" do not belong to a real life professional author. I would classify this as witchy chick lit perhaps?
