Thank you to Daniel Hurst, Bookotoure Audio, and NetGalley for an ARC of this audiobook.
The Doctor's Widow is a sequel to The Doctor's Wife. I was initially hesitant to read this book because I did not read The Doctor's Wife, but boy, I am glad that I did! Hurst did a great job summarizing the first book in the beginning chapters.
The Doctor's Widow is about a dead husband, a wrongfully accused mistress, and a Fren, a widow who will do anything to protect her secret. But when Roger enters her life and Fern falls madly in love, will she be able to keep her secret?
I loved this book and was invested from the beginning. I loved that the story was told from different POVs and loved the narrators for all the characters. So many twists and shocking secrets throughout the book left me wanting more!! Will there be a part three??

The Doctor's Widow (The Doctor's Wife Book 2)
by Daniel Hurst
Narrated by Luke R. Francis, Sarah Durham
I wouldn't say that this book is unputdownable, but it was decent listen. Though it's Book 2 in a series, you don't need to have read the first one to read this one. Fern has gotten away with killing her husband, the doctor. Now she's free and looking to move on with her life. Her enemies are all taken care of and out of the picture. Plus, she's met Roger, who she quickly decides will make a great father for the baby that she's now wanting. Only thing is, not everyone is who they say they are and secrets will come out...
This isn't my first book by Daniel Hurst. He continues to craft engaging stores that kee you listening. This one wasn't quite as twisty and turny as some of his others, but it was a good listen nonetheless. The narrators did a good job, though I wasn't over the moon for the male narration.
Thanks so much to the author, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the chance to listen to and review this ARC!
When I finished the first book "The Doctor's Wife" I had higher hopes for book two. Although it was quite an interesting read I would have loved a little more thrill. I am aware that not everyone's taste is the same, but personally I appreciate if the book makes me want to look at the wall and create my own version before the book ends, trying to find answers. I felt that the book was missing that thrill and mystery. The ending was not bad, but I also feel like I can predict what might happen in the next book. I enjoyed how well everything was described, it made me feel that I was present while the characters in the book were going on with their lives. A little drama -twist that I did not expect was when the character in prison found out she was pregnant from the Widow's husband. I look forward to reading more of your books!
I downloaded this AudioARC from NetGalley to listen to while doing some admin.
Three stars from me means that I believe the author has achieved their aims and it’s a good book, but that I personally didn’t fall in love with it.
In this case, I just found both narrators to be absolutely horrible people. One has killed her husband and the other is obsessed with entrapping her to admit she did so. He masquerades under a false identity to become her lover and seduce her. I know cognitive dissonance is just part of the human condition but how he can think that’s OK behaviour is beyond me.
If you are less bothered by the morality of the methods used to bring a killer to justice, then you may well love this book. It’s certainly well-written and the characters, with all their flaws, are frighteningly believable.
Three word review: Murder and entrapment.
She's back! The Doctor's Wife (now a widow) is back with vengeance. She's got a new house- curtsey of her deceased husband's life insurance-- and plans for a while new life with her new partner, Roger. Unfortunately for her, the person Roger seems to be is as far from the truth as the person she's pretending to me.
I absolutely loved this one. It's more of a cat-and-mouse style story and you're not really sure who will end up on top. I couldn't put it down! I'm so glad there was room left for a third book!
Thank you for yet another Daniel Hurst book. Following is my honest and unbiased opinion of The Doctor's Widow. Wow, what a fun sequel! I thought this was better than the first in the series and I can hardly wait to get my hands on the third one to come in December. In this installment, the reader is quickly caught up on the outcome of the first in the series and it was very easy to dive into the second. The pacing was speedy, and the drama was just as luscious as always. I enjoyed the deception and the cat and mouse aspects of this story; just when you think you're safe...think again! It ended on a crazy cliff hanger, leaving the door wide open for even more fun ahead. Please approve The Doctor's Mistress!!!
Pick this one up and you will not put it down. How to get away with murder and some. The chilling coldness and the macabre sense of "getting away" makes for a great page turner.
Wow! This book was incredible. It might even be better than the first one! It’s a toss up! The narrators were excellent! Thank you for allowing me to read this book! I will recommend it to everyone!
In this story, the main character was working through the aftermath of her husband passing away with twists and turns a plenty! She is figuring out who to trust and how to survive.
This is the second book in the series and it definitely felt that way. It is important to have read the first one, otherwise the book keeps you guessing on what happened. It also leaves the reader with a huge cliffhanger, leaving a lot wanting.
The plot line felt somewhat rushed while at the same time felt as though phrases or moments were repetitive. The character would think or say something and then repeat it again even though intuitive leaps could be made.
Loved the authors voice. Great read with an engaging plot. Perfect for a summer read with a glass of wine 🍷
It was good but it could have been better. I listened to the audiobook in a rental car. The volume changed with each character. I had a hard time understanding the male voice. I did not love the ending.
I received this galley from NetGalley.
In The Doctor’s Widow, we pick up the story several months after the events of The Doctor’s Wife. Fern has gotten away with it. Away with murdering her adulterous husband, framing his mistress for his murder and killing the mistress’s husband to keep the truth from coming out. She just wants to put the past behind her and move on with her life. A new life with Roger, a man she is falling for.
But Roger isn’t who she think he is. In fact, Roger isn’t Roger at all… And that’s not the only secret he’s finding.
I knew what I was getting into here. A popcorn, beach thriller that I can whizz through, like I did earlier this year when I fairest discovered Daniel Hurat. But I didn’t enjoy this as much as I hoped. I get why - the book felt like it took a long time to warm up. For a good half of the book, I was waiting for the penny to drop. For the train to go off the tracks and for this to turn into a game of cat and mouse. But it didn’t happen, and when it finally did, the climax was over far too quickly for my tastes…
But this was still fun. Don’t get me wrong. This was a fun, crazy read, but I just wish for something more from it.
Am I going to read more from this author and the next book in the series, The Doctor's Mistress? …er, yeah. I knew to know where this is going!
Thank you NetGalley for the audio copy in exchange for a honest review. This is the second book in a series but can be read as a stand alone. Following her husband Drew’s murder Fern is living the life of luxury with a new car and house. Drew’s mistress Alice is in prison for his murder. Drew’s friend Greg is sure Alice is innocent and has been framed by Fern. He starts a relationship with Fern to get the proof he needs. This cleverly written thriller had me so gripped I did not want it to end. Can’t wait for the next instalment.
Confession: I didn't realise this was the second book in a series.
Even though I haven't read the first book, I picked up pretty quickly on the backstory of the main character.
Overall, I thought this story was... okay. The ending was predictable and it kind of ruined the story for me. Perhaps it would have been better to read the first book first.
The Doctors Widow is a good listen with lots of twists and turns I have also listen to the Doctors Wife by Daniel Hurst and enjoyed this too although this is a stand alone story so you don't need to to read them as a series
When I read the first book in this series, I didn't see how the author could top it, but did he ever! I loved this one even more than the first and can't wait for #3. Twists, danger, and thrillsssss!
I couldn’t wait to read this second book in the #TheDoctorsWifeseries! It picks up right after Book 1 ended, with the same exciting pace & wicked plot with twists galore.
Book 3 cannot come soon enough!!!
I’m on pins and needles waiting for the next one.
Once again, #Daniel Hurst keeps me returning to anything he writes.
The audiobook is wonderfully narrated by #LukeRFrancis #SarahDurham!
Thank you, Daniel Hurst , #Bookouture audio, Bookouture, & netgalley for my copy! All opinions are my own.
I will have to give a better review after I read the prequel "The doctor's wife". The setup is great and I just got the first book in the series so I can enjoy this one.
Another amazing book by Daniel Hurst. This was just as exciting and captivating as the first one. I would highly suggest that you read the first book in the series to understand what’s going on in this book. You will not be disappointed!
Everything is going Fern’s way. Her husband is out of the way, his lover in prison, and she has a new-found wealth and freedom. Plus, she has a new love interest in Roger. The future looks bright. After all, none of what happened in the past is her fault. She deserves the life she now has.
So, what could possibly go wrong?
A lot it seems….maybe Fern is a tad delusional. And Roger has a big secret.
And that is all I’m going to say about the plot.
This is just as much of a riveting page-turner as book #1 in the series. It’s incredibly entertaining to be inside Fern’s head and hear her thought processes.
If you haven’t, do read book #1 first. Better yet, listen to it. Both are fun addictive popcorn reads that my reading buddy, Marialyce, and I thoroughly enjoyed!
Fern’s story is not over yet, and I can’t wait till book #3 is released.
