This is a great psychological thriller, which is the follow on to The Doctor's Wife. I really enjoyed this book, and the two audiobook narrators did a great job.
The story is about a woman called Fern, who is living a new life after the death of her husband Drew. She has a new man called Roger, who she is in love with, but he is only out to get revenge on Fern for what she did to Drew, who was his friend.
This is a really exciting book, which is full of suspense, thrills and drama, and it kept me engrossed throughout. If you love domestic thrillers, then you will love this book. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
The Doctor's Widow is the second book in the Doctor's Wife series. I haven't read the first book, but there is sufficient backstory to make this a worthwhile standalone listen. It's a fast-paced domestic suspense focusing on Fern, who was the Doctor's wife and, after his murder, is now his widow. Fern is not a likeable character. She is driven and revenge-led and doesn't care who she destroys until she gets her desired result. Her characterisation is complex, and her narrative works well in audio. The gradual revelation of Fern's crimes and Greg's blinkered and relentless pursuit of her make this an intense and suspenseful listen.
The story culminates in an impactful twist which though not surprising, does demonstrate the evil side of Fern effectively for the reader. The final twists pave the way for another story. The story works well as an audiobook as the narrators depict the different characters succinctly and convey a sense of menace that captivates the listener. I like the story's immersive quality, the fast pace and the depth of characterisation.
I received a copy of this audiobook from the publisher.
I found this book very well written and narrated, a good narrator makes or breaks an audio book! The cover and is perfect and instantly I was drawn to request. The story is gripping and a definitely page turner. It was overall a good listen and I would recommend to audiobook lovers but I wish the story kept going as I want to know what happens next.

Audio length ~ 6 hours 54 minutes

Fern & Greg are dating, however she thinks his name is Roger.
Tomlin was the detective that put Alice away, and she gives her thoughts on that matter from the slammer.
If you read book 1 then you know Fern killed her hub and framed his mistress. Fern was acting so delusional in thinking she'd never get caught, but does she? You'll have to find out for yourself.
I love that we knew what Greg's intentions were the whole time, and he played his part pretty well.
Another exciting read from the author who likes to pump out book after book after book, which surprisingly never lack in quality.
Series notes:
A continuation from The Doctor’s Wife, so definitely read that one first. And it looks like there might be a 3rd book as there's a bit of a cliffhanger.
Narration notes:
They both did a fine job, but each one narrated 2 characters, so a differing of tones would have been nice. Sarah's male voices leave a little to be desired.
As a devoted fan of Daniel Hurst's work, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review this audiobook.
"The Doctor's Widow" is the second installment in the Doctor series, and much like the first book, it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. The author skillfully crafts suspense, creating a gripping narrative that held my attention from start to finish.
If you found this book to your liking, I highly recommend exploring more of Daniel's books. I've personally never been disappointed by any of his works, and I'm confident you'll find more thrilling stories to enjoy.
This book is very well written and narrated and had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end. The cover and the synopsis is perfect. This book is also really gripping and a definitely page turner. 3 stars cuz it was lacking something I cant really put my finger on. It was overall a good listen and I would recommmend to audiobook beginners.
My only "complaint" about this book was that it ended too soon! The narrators were great! I read the first and listened to this one. Listening really immersed me in the story. This book follows Fern as she restarts her life after her husbands death. Of course she couldnt really have a happily ever after could she? The ending was abrupt so i really hope we get a 3rd book!
I just reviewed The Doctor's Widow (The Doctor's Wife Book 2) by Daniel Hurst. #TheDoctorsWidow #NetGalley
There is barely any dialogue in this book. The story could have been wrapped up in book 1. I enjoyed book 1 but didn’t really enjoy book 2. I enjoyed the narration on the audiobook.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Thank you NetGalley and Daniel Hurst for sharing an ARC of The Doctor's Widow with me in exchange for an honest review.
I remember being flabbergasted when I realized that Stephen King published The Dark Tower II, Misery, and The Tommyknockers all in a single year (1987). I know that there were contributing factors that helped him stay intensely focused during that time, and I also know that the reviews were mixed for one of them (The Tommyknockers). But still, three novels in one year? Wow! And this was a year after It was published. Crazy times.
Anyways, this is what came to mind when I realized that The Doctor's Widow is the third Daniel Hurst novel that I have read through NetGalley this year. This might be slightly inaccurate, but this is Daniel Hurst's eighth novel to be released in 2023, and we're about halfway through August. I thought that I was keeping up with him, but I was very mistaken. Take that as you will.
Regardless of any quantity over quality speculation, The Doctor's Widow hit in similar fashion compared to the first entry of the Doctor's Wife series. Like its predecessor, it was short, engaging, and fast-paced. Also like its predecessor, you need to take off your critical thinking hat to bypass any plot-holes that might spoil the ride for you.
The bottom line is that if you enjoyed the first entry, give this one a go.
In the end, this was a 3.5 star read rounded down for me. I didn't round up because I couldn't get past one of the central plot points that sparked the series of events that lead from book one to book two.
(The following is only a spoiler if you haven't read the The Doctor's Wife)
I couldn't get past the fact that Greg occasionally played tennis with Drew, it was made clear that they didn't hang out beyond that, and one time, Greg noticed that Drew's wife was jealous when she shouldn't have been (according to him). All that was enough for him to uproot his life, change his identity, and track down Fern because, despite the police investigation, he had a hunch that there was more to the story of his late tennis partner.
Fun Fact: In the 1970's and 1980's, the general view among publishers was that authors should only release one book a year. Because of this, Stephen King wrote a handful of books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman so that he could release multiple novels a year and not oversaturate the King name. He kept it a secret until a bookstore clerk figured it out and exposed him. At the time, he was writing Misery, which was supposed to be a Bachman book...
If Daniel Hurst was an author in the 80's, I imagine he would have a footlocker full of fake ID's and passports for all the pseudonyms he would have to have to release 12 books a year like he does today.
The Doctor's Widow by Daniel Hurst

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

She trusted him. Now she’s paying the price…
I loved my husband, Doctor Drew Devlin , but he betrayed me. And now he’s dead.
As I put the key in the lock and open the door to the luxurious new home I’ve purchased with Drew’s life insurance money, I’m certain the worst days are behind me. My secret is safe, and I can’t wait to enjoy my new wealth and freedom.
Then I meet handsome Roger . I wasn’t looking for a relationship but as we spend our evenings drinking wine on my sunny terrace, I realise he’s just what I need right now. Roger is nothing like Drew, he’s spontaneous and romantic. And most of all, he’s honest.
He thinks I’m a rich, lonely woman . He’s wrong of course, there’s so much more to me…
But then one night, when we’re curled up in bed together, Roger says something that makes my blood run cold. I think he knows the truth about my life as the doctor’s wife.
I will do anything to stop my past from catching up with me… But is Roger really who he says he is? Or is my life now in danger?
My Opinion
With a Daniel Hurst novel I always know that I am going to be taken on a journey, he packs a lot into his books even though they are relatively short. This cannot be read as a standalone as this will spoil the events on The Doctor's Wife but for once in a Daniel Hurst book it was nice to be back among familiar characters. A gripping, fast-paced novel where it seems that nobody is as they first appear. Another great thriller from Hurst.
Rating 4/5
I’m a huge fan of Daniel hurst so I was delighted to be given this audiobook to review.
The doctors widow is book two in the doctor series and once again I was on the edge of my seat the full time and loved the suspense built by the author.
If you enjoyed this you should definitely check more of Daniels books out as I’ve never been disappointed in any I’ve read.
Thanks again!
The Doctor’s wife is now a widow. Fast paced gripping plot & engaging characters.
I highly recommend to read “The Doctor’s Wife” before this one.
The audiobook’s narration was great!
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC.
Thank you to Daniel Hurst, Bookouture and Netgalley for allowing me to read this before publication date in exchange for an honest review.
This book has me torn, I certainly enjoyed it more than the first one however I didn’t love it.
I listened to it rather than read which I did really enjoy, I think the voice actors were great and told the story well, I really enjoyed Greg’s part of the story.
I could not stand Fern’s character and found her soooo whingey throughout.
I feel this book was a bit odd in that Greg barely knew Drew and took it upon himself to solve his murder, to me it seems like a lot of effort and risk to go through for someone who you were not that close to. I also feel there were no twists in this book, I won’t give away any spoilers however I think this one is very predictable. You know what’s going to happen before it does which was a bit of a let down.
However, it did keep me interested enough to continue listening, and I feel that I am very intrigued in what happens next, especially with Fern. The whole way through the book I was desperately hoping she would be caught out.
I think the author has set this up nicely for a next one and I definitely would read it. I really liked Alice’s character and hope that in the next one she says true to herself as she seems very likeable,
Overall I did enjoy this book, I would recommend it and I rate it 3.5 starts.
First audiobook that I have got in NetGalley and I can say that this is very satisfying to listen and would get you hooked for more. I have read the book and listened to its audiobook as well. It did not change anything.
The doctor's widow moves on. Love this follow-up to The Doctor’s Wife!
The Doctor's Widow (The Doctor's Wife #2) picks up after the first novel so this review may contain mild spoilers. Wait...who am I kidding? Wink wink at the book title.
Fern is the widow and enjoying her new single life. Life is good, her cheating husband is 6ft under, his mistress Alice is in jail, and she bought a lavish new house (with his money of course) and found a new man, Roger. But wait, there's more. She needs a baby to complete the picture and decides to get off her pills, Roger's baby will do.
Through it all, Fern reminds herself to act like a grieving widow and visits Doctor Drew's grave every now and then. OMG, I can't wait for karma to catch up to her. Fern is that villain I love to hate.
The Doctor's Widow is an addictive popcorn thriller. You might have to be in the right mindset to enjoy the unlikable characters. For me, it's entertaining to be inside her head. Daniel Hurst's books have become an auto-read for me and I know I'll be thoroughly entertained. This one is as good as I expected it to be.
I listened to this terrific audiobook with two narrators; Sarah Durham and Luke R. Francis were brilliant.
Thank you Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for my ALC.
I struggled to get into the beginning of this while listening to it. Maybe because I have not read the first book?
Once i was drawn in it was an enjoyable book.
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
She trusted him. Now she’s paying the price…
I will do anything to stop my past from catching up with me… But is Roger really who he says he is? Or is my life now in danger?
NO NO NO!!! I want to know how the series ends!! A great sequel-pulls you in, keeps your attention, and makes you hungry for more!! Readers/listeners/check this series out. It's amazing! Fern is free after murdering her husband and Rory. Meanwhile, Alice is in prison for Drew's murder. Drew's friend gets more intertwined in Fern's life in hopes he will get the evidence to bring her down. Daniel Hurst wrote a great book and will leave the reader MAD because they have to wait for another installment!
The Doctor's Wido was a great sequel, and I can't wait for the next book to see how the latest things play out with these two women. 5 stars
I hadn't realised when I started listening to this book that it was the second in the series following on from 'The Doctor's Wife' however it works perfectly well as a standalone title. Having enjoyed the book so much I do want to go back and read the first book now to capture the back story!
There are lots of twists and turns to keep the reader captivated and the audio book is very skillfully narrated to add to the suspense and intrigue. Fern is enjoying her inheritance and newly widowed status following the murder of her husband, Doctor Drew. She hadn't banked on meeting a new love interest in 'Roger ' who isn't all he seems. When Fern lets her guard down a little, Roger ( who happens to be Drew's old friend Greg) uses the information to seek justice for his old friend and the woman falsely imprisoned for his murder.
I was slightly disappointed with the sudden ending after a couple of bombshell moments but realise this is because there will be a third instalment in the series - bring it on!
I am grateful to the publishers and Netgalley for an advanced listener copy of this audiobook.
My thanks to Net Galley and Bookouture Audio for allowing me to review this audio book.
This is the follow up to The Doctor's Wife, only this time, the tables are turned on Fern with some great revenge!
