Mindblowing, there are no words to explain how this book grips you and keeps you in it's clutches.
I have a few books by Helen Fields on my tbr, they will be moving up my list quick sharp because after reading Profile K I want more and more!
I have previously read Helen Fields' work of DI Luc Callanach but didn't finish the series. What I did read, I enjoyed and was glad I got approved to read Profile K, and had a fun time reading this too.
Midnight (a really cool name actually) is just a girl who wants to take care of her twin sister, Dawn (see what the parents did there?) until she comes across a Profile K at Necto.
I really liked how Fields portrayed the (extreme) corporate culture that is exhibited when a company is threatened with exposure of their misdeeds - it gave a true-to-life Black Mirror-esque feel and was a realistic deterrent to Midnight doing the right thing. I think the plot unfolded really well, even told from 3 POVs. The applicant's initial anonymity was presented in an intriguing manner and a few twists kept me guessing.
It would have been good to unravel the backstory of the applicant a little more to have a better emotional understanding (as much as one could have with a character like this anyway) as to the key turning point in their life.
I would recommend this book and I can see another book set in this world.
This was good. An interesting concept. It was suspenseful and at times hard to read because it was intense.
Ooh this is a dark book but I liked it! You follow the story of Midnight Jones who works in a high profile company who seem to be interested in expanding their virtual world. Without giving away the story this is a really gripping book - be prepared to go without sleep near the end!
Thank you netgalley for an advanced ARC of this book
In this dark gripping thriller which for me was a page Turner, you get to see inside the head of a serial killer. The looks we get into his head are very Graphic thoughts that will leave people feeling unease or even terrifed but for me I was facasnated seeing how his head can be so dark and Grim etc.
In the beginning of this book u are seeing a woman be murdered and though the writing I could sense her pain. For me this book is very well and greatly written (I love horror and thriller and I see both in this book mixed together in a harmonious tone which glides so well together).
With the main character being a character profiler for criminal cases she dives deep into the wrong one which makes her get to close to the killer and now she is the next target.
I was stuck to my.chair and I definitely will be reading From this author again
4.5 stars
Ooft, the opening chapter just gets right into it and gives us an intro into the bad guy then we meet Midnight. She works in a powerful business that offers profiles to help colleges/businesses with applicants/suitability. When midnight comes across a profile K - basically someone who is off the scale abnormal like ticking all the boxes for being a killer/psychopath in their responses to what they see. When it becomes apparent that someone is killing women in a horrific way but also one that Midnight recognises who can she turn to? The business is all about the business, money, power and with that corruption is rife because the business/reputation must always comes first.
Very much a cat and mouse as Midnight tries to learn more about who she is convinced in a killer and the killer now has Midnight on their radar but very little information to go on apart from her name. The book breaks down really three fold, Midnights pov and happenings, the killers pov and outside the company ie Midnight's private life, being carer to her twin and why she does what she does like everything revolves around her and her care.
Creepy, atmospheric, the killing aspects is horrific and not for the faint hearted. In between all of that what have family, friendship and relationships. I tutted and NOOOOOOOO/FGS Midnight what are you thinking, don't do/say that, ahhhhh. That being said sometimes people behaving daft/questionable is very reflective of real life. Stalking has a big part in the book too so just an fyi/headsup for you. We have read Fields before and will read her again, she has a knack for creating bad guys/creeps and Profile K is no exception, 4/5 from me.
Quite easily one of the most intriguing psychological crime thrillers that I have read in recent times. I had begun reading with the generic prospect of an engaging thriller, perhaps about a serial killer, but this turned out to be much more complex.
Medical profiling these days has attained the level of being scary for people. The fiendish idea that it can be used to manipulate and resurrect a Frankenstein is portrayed in a creepily immaculate way in this book. At the centre of the vortex are two (and more) women who strive to even realise who is after them and why. Midnight Jones is not a detective here but her ability to analyse and reach at the ultimate source of the problem is wonderful to read. I have turned into a fan of Midnight and just hope the author would continue writing more books around her life.
'Gripping thriller' has turned into such a cliché that I would rather say this was an 'unputdownable' read. Even gave me a nightmare after reading!
Another great novel from Helen Fields!. I loved the alternating points of view between Midnight and the Applicant. I thought Helen Fields did a great job parceling out the information to the reader, letting you come along for the story but keeping you guessing the whole time.
Looking forward to reading more of Helen's work in the future. I know it is always going to be an excellent read.
4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
✨psychological thriller
✨different / not usual plot
✨ midnight jones is our main character here. She is working for a bio tech company that reviews profile. Definitely not something normal when a profile k just got an alert .
Then suddenly a woman got murdered in the neighbourhood, until it gets weirder and weirder that it might be a connection.
✨ this is quite a different story from what I use to read for a psychological thriller.
It was great but I got to be honest it’s not my cup of tea.
✨ Thankyou netgalley for the opportunity to review this arc for a honest review.
✨Helen , you are an amazing author. First time reading this book and for sure not the last.

"Profile K" is a riveting psychological thriller that grips you from the first page and doesn't let go until the very end. In just two days, I found myself completely immersed in this book and unable to put the book down. The author masterfully combines elements of suspense and intrigue, crafting a story that is both thought-provoking and heart-pounding.
"Profile K" delves deep into the complexities of the human brain and the ethical dilemmas posed by advanced technology. The plot is intricately woven, with twists and turns that keep you guessing. Each character is meticulously developed, their motivations and struggles adding depth to the narrative.
What sets this book apart is its insightful exploration of the human mind. The author's understanding of psychological intricacies is evident, and they skillfully portray the potential and perils of technological advancements. The futuristic elements are not just a backdrop but an integral part of the story, making the setting as compelling as the characters themselves.
In conclusion, "Profile K" is an exceptional read for fans of psychological thrillers and science fiction alike. Its fast-paced narrative and profound themes make it a standout in its genre. If you're looking for a book that challenges your intellect while keeping you on the edge of your seat, "Profile K" is the perfect choice. Highly recommended!
WOW what a great read !! This was one of the ‘ just one more chapter’ books ! An unusual storyline, but you can actually see this happening in the future ! Highly recommend!
Profile K is a totally different murder thriller, intense and gripping .Midnight Jones works for a Bio Tech Company creating profiles based on applications received from various companies .One day she comes across a Profile K which has never happened before ,she goes to her boss who tells her to forget it as Profile K doesn't exist but she is curious .Then local girls are getting murdered in a particularly gruesome way Midnight is sure Profile K is responsible and against all the odds is determined to find out who he is .It is a dangerous game she is up against a killer who always seems to be one step ahead .The characters were good I particularly liked Dora an excellent read .Thank you to Net Galley for my ARC.
Profile K by Helen Fields is an excellent thriller that I really enjoyed.
This is the first time I have read this author.
Her characters are dynamic and well fleshed out.
The suspense is next level.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more from this author.
Only the second novel I've read by this author, the first being The Institution, and this didn't disappoint.
A fantastic thriller with very well written characters and a great pace to the story. Characters are introduced and you don't immediately know where they are going to fit in, good or bad. Despite the indications in the book as to the identity of the perpetrator of the violence he could easily be one of several subjects in the story and are left hanging until quite late on for all the loose ends to be wrapped up. A very good take on where our information based society is heading when information is in the wrong hands.
Thoroughly enjoyable and worth the full 5 stars.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.
I normally love Helen Fields books but this one fell a bit flat for me. I found Midnights character frustrating and some of her actions didn’t match her need to protect her sister. I was slightly baffled as to why more staff weren’t suspicious of Necto and it’s weird practices. The Police’s actions were also a bit odd. I did however love Doris and Jessica and I enjoyed Dr Connie Woolwines appearance. The villain is terrifying and his crimes are gruesome. It was an interesting concept it just fell a bit short.
#ProfileK #NetGalley This book started off a little bit slow for me and it took me a while to understand what Midnight's job as a profiler for Necto actually entailed. however, once the pace quickened I could not put this down. Lots of action, plenty of twists and turns and some great writing. I loved the fact that Dr Connie Woolwine (a regular in previous books by this author) made an appearance too! A great read.
If you want a fast paced , edge of your seat thriller , this is for you. This had me gripped from start to finish. It’s the story of Midnight and her twin sister Dawn who has a disability where she needs constant care. Midnight works for a high tech company and it’s here she comes across Profile K. There is a killer on the loose who likes blood and we get descriptions of gruesome violence towards women. What follows is a nail biting chase to find the killer and Midnight does not know who to trust . People are listening to her and watching her. I loved Midnight as a character, she is so strong and feisty. She loves her sister and will do anything to protect her. There are some tender moments in this novel especially the friendship between Jessica , Doris and Midnight. Well recommended.
Midnight comes across a profile at work, a profile labeled profile k, for killer. But no one seems to care or take her seriously. Then, people begin to die, and Midnight believes she is next. How can she find a killer, and save herself, when all she knows is the profile is a man?
More gore and action than I was anticipating. Midnight was likeable enough but with the tendency to take things into her own hands which sometimes makes things worse and leaves you yelling into your book for her to stop being so stupid. A good ride with multiple perspectives, Midnight, the applicant, and the cop to name a few, but not too many to lose track of the plot.
This is the second book I've read by this author, and I've decided that she's just not for me. I did like this book better than the previous one I read. Some of the plotline read a little like science fiction to me. I never was able to really understand Necto's profiling system or what the point was. I also did not buy into some of the police decisions, such as not investigating a burglary because nothing appeared to have been stolen. I liked the way the characters were written and especially liked Midnight, Jessica, and Doris. I also thought the parts with the killer were exciting and quite dark. I did think this could have been less than 400 pages long.
This book has a 4.59 rating and rave reviews on Goodreads, so definitely check it out!
Thank you, @netgalley and @avonbooksuk, for the #gifted e-arc of this book!
