This is my third book by this author and I have thoroughly enjoyed each one. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing until the end.
I have always enjoyed a good whodunnit and this doesn’t disappoint. The characters are unique and the plot is engaging. The mystery is spread throughout the story. A good atmospheric book!
This sounded like a great premise for a mystery & I was excited to receive it. And the writing definitely lived up to the blurb, it pulled me right in. None of the invitees have a happy life, they all have trouble from their pasts to varying degrees of severity. Their sadness & desperation leads them all to having to try & make it through the night, for money & more importantly the answers. This has a House on Haunted Hill mixed with Agatha Christie vibe that I really was into. Its writing is precise & fast paced. Honestly, I really enjoyed it. There’s enough revelations along the way to keep readers happy & a decent surprise conclusion.
Thank you NetGalley and One More Chapter for my approval to read and review this book.
The story is centred around 6 people receiving an invitation to a crumbling home called Beechwood Castle near the town of Rock Hill in Indiana. In 1996, there was a brutal incident where 3 teanagers were killed by an ax murderer, and one teenager was left alive. The invite asks them to stay the night for a share in one million dollars and those who survive will be paid. The story is told in the 6 characters point of view in a chapter each. The descriptions of the building and the individuals were well written. No spoilers but I do recommend you pick up this book. A classic locked room mystery.
I never get tired of reading stories like this! It was very much like the slasher TV show. Her characterization was spot on. You can’t help but hate the characters for the most part, and it’s entirely by design. Part of you wants everyone to survive because you know they don’t deserve to die like that, but the other part of you knows that they are all terrible people. And just when you think they might have some redeeming characteristics, they go and do something horrible again. I’ll be honest, I was so wrapped up in the drama between the characters that I didn’t guess the killer until the end. That’s pretty rare for me, so kudos to the author for her talent at misdirection! I’ll definitely be reading more from her!
Huge thanks to HarperCollins UK and NetGalley for sending me this ARC for review! All of my reviews are given honestly!
Perfect for the spooky season, the story revolves around six people who receive invitations to spend the night in a house where one of the most brutal crimes, and history was committed. An ax murderer killed three people in the house, now, the soul survivor, and five others are back to spend the night. None of them are who they appear to be, and one of them intends to make sure the rest do not live to see the light of day. Yes, this is a clichéd plot, but I still found it to be tremendous fun.
The Traitors is a fast paced murder mystery not for the faint of heart. A little bit of Clue, The Westing Game, Nancy Drew, and Agatha Christy all rolled into one book.
An axe welding serial killer has brought 6 unlucky people to a haunted house for one last night. Each character has their own troubled past and none of them are expecting murder. To their surprise, death is a lot closer than they think.
My only critiques are that the characters were annoying in their own way (maybe so the reader doesn’t become attached?), and that the story, while fast paced, could have been drawn out a little bit more so that each character could have been fully exposed and so the reader could feel more heightened emotions while reading.
Thankful to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was, unfortunately, a miss for me. With so many characters to choose from, not one of them were exactly likable, and some were even off-putting. The story was a bit clichéd and whether it was meant to be or not, it was borderline corny towards the end. The atmosphere, however, was eerie and haunting. The first half of this, as we are getting to know everyone, was intriguing and well done. It was after about the halfway mark that it didn't work for my personal taste any longer, and I slowly found myself losing interest. It was a quick read, so if this peaks your interest, go for it. Three stars.
Thank you Netgalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for this ARC.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the invitation to read this book.
Years ago Lolly was the last girl standing when 3 of her friends were killed by a crazed axe murderer. Now years later she is invited back to where it happened. Also invited are: the ex cop who investigated, a true crime author, a cold case wannabe internet star, a shamed fortune teller and an architect. All they have to do is survive the night to collect prize money…
This book is told by all characters, taking chapters each. It seemed most chapters ended with snorting out of the blue happening and causing a twist and new direction to the tail. I enjoyed this for the most part and read it quickly. I’ve knocked a star off, as the actual killer and post reveal part of the story seemed to fall a bit flat compared to the build up. Still a decent read.
I love locked-door mysteries, especially ones with really atmospheric settings, but The Traitors was a miss for me. I struggle to stay engaged with books that have multiple narratives, especially as many as this one does. The format doesn't allow me to get to know the characters as well, and I find that I spend more time trying to sort them all out. I was trying to give this book a chance despite that, but Cornelius' narrative was way too off-putting, Yes, I understand the point of unlikable characters, but some of his commentary was so strong that I didn't want to read any more of it.
Clearly, this was not a fit for me, but I'd be willing to give another of the author's books a try.
The Traitors by C. A. Lynch is a locked-room thriller. Six people walk into the house. One of them is an imposter, and all are traitors; which will survive the night?
This book's atmosphere was the shining star in the story. It was creepy and added elements that the characters couldn't accomplish. The scenes hit on the senses, such as the smell of blood.
The story unfolds in a slow and anticipatory fashion, building up to revealing the final outcome. Some of the characters you love, others you hate, which is the purpose, and this has you guessing and suspecting each character.
The story has good twists, an amazing location, and good storytelling.

I just finished The Traitors by C. A. Lynch and I rate it 4/5 stars. I really enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down. I finished it in one day. I absolutely loved all of the twists in the book and didn’t see them coming. I found that this book wasn’t predictable and I loved that. This book is released February 1, 2024. Thank you to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, Netgalley and C. A. Lynch for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book.
A truly exciting and heart-pounding read. Lynch provides just enough hope for the amateur detective reader to feel some semblance of confidence they are on the right track - only to introduce yet another twist. I threw more balled up scraps of paper into my waste bin than I'm proud to admit. I enjoyed every second of this one.
Pay attention, discount no detail, and for heaven's sake, don't read it in the dark.
Thank you to Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley for the ARC of this thrilling novel.
This is a captivating and eerie gothic thriller, filled with an intense atmosphere that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story begins when six individuals discover a thick cream envelope left on their doorsteps. Inside, an invitation awaits, inviting them to spend 24 hours in a decaying manor house, with the chance of winning a share of one million dollars. Beechwood Castle, the chosen location, holds a dark past, stained with one of the most gruesome murders recorded. The scent of blood, decay, and death still lingers heavily in the air.
Throughout the book, the anticipation builds as you become engrossed in uncovering the identity of the imposter among the characters and delving into their hidden secrets. The author possesses an engaging writing style that effortlessly grips your attention.
The story unfolds gradually, dropping subtle hints and clues along the way, keeping you guessing. The sudden eruption of unexpected events adds a thrilling twist, confirming your suspicions about various characters. However, it is important to note that the major reveal may initially appear implausible, but as the plot progresses, it becomes more believable.
While some seasoned readers may find the book somewhat clichéd and express reservations concerning the ending, overall, it remains an intriguing choice for those seeking a suspenseful and quick read before bedtime.
This novel is particularly suitable for individuals who enjoy immersing themselves in thrilling narratives that grab hold of their imagination.
Thank you, NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for the copy of The Traitors by C. A. Lynch. If you love locked room mysteries try this one. Six people are invited to spend the night at a former murder scene and can win money if they last all night. It was a fun read, trying to figure out which one was the imposter and learning all of their secrets. I have always loved Lynch’s writing style and this book was no exception. The story was great and the characters were suitably unlikable. It was interesting how all of the action happened unexpectedly all at once, after we were given enough clues to suspect many characters. I’m not sure I loved the big reveal because it didn’t seem plausible until I read a later chapter.
Loved this story. Beechwood Castle is hosting 6 individuals for a one night event. All that stay all night recieve a portion of a million dollars. The problem is that the castle is the site of a violent series of murders and it's unlikely that they will all live to see the next day,
Join The Traitors and see if you can guess who is behind this event and why. Kept me guessing and kept me interested - I would love to read more by C. A. Lynch!

The Traitors by new to me author C.A. Lynch, published by Harper Collins UK / One More Chapter, is a full length mystery thriller.
Staci is a young woman who made some bad decisions already. Sorry not sorry no spoilers here. Now she's living with relatives and she respises that.
Her newest interest is unresolved crimes and she h´gets roped in sometiming potentially dangerous.
Six people become an invitation to spend 24 hours in manor with the chance to win a lot of money.
"Six people walk into the house. One of them is an imposter, all of them are traitors, which of them will survive the night?"
A story full of unexpected twists and turns that had me guessing till the very last page. While I didn't care much for whiny wingy Staci, she grows into her skin later in the story, becomes an asset and then I liked her character just fine.
