thank you to the author, publishers and netgalley for allowing me to read in exchange for an honest review.
i'm so glad that despite seeing the other reviews previously, i was able to read and enjoy this book on its own and form my own opinions. while i agree with some other comments, i do not agree with all.
my only issue with this book is leonie's lack of backbone when it comes to her annoying step brother. like dear lord ... why did she allow him to belittle her relationship with the family throughout the entire book? and then tell her that jack was still a married man (he just didn't have money for a divorce), making it out that jack was still in love with his wife ... when eric was "secretly" boning said wife ?? just an odd person. i disliked him so much.
i think other reviews are a little dramatic when it comes to jack. perhaps it is because i read dark romance and know love interests can be a lot worse .. but he was not that bad ?? the more frustrating part of their relationship was just the miscommunication. jack himself was just a grumpy dude who had bad past experiences with wealthy women so i got
why he distanced himself.
this was a cute angsty strangers who meet
for a one night stand in paris but end up having to work together book. while i didnt understand a lot of the technical aspects, i still enjoyed the romance.
thank you again to the author, publishers and netgalley
I went in expecting great things and unfortunately that wasn't achieved. I DNF'ED the book at 8% because I just could not get into it.
For that reason I am unable to give a suitable rating.
This book wasn't for me. I lost interest with the characters and found the story slow. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book.
I found this book really hard to get into. For me it was the characters, I just didn’t like them from the start. Sitting in a pub talking about lockdown like is was a Harry Potter theme “he who should not be named” just put me off them from the start. Unfortunately this was definitely not for me
First of all, my thoughts were a lot of WTF when I gave up at about 4%. I know that seems really quick to give up, but my long review here will explain that if you finish it all. I was so excited for this one, it sounded good, especially the STEM since I love Ali Hazelwood's books and I am a former science teacher. I even found a line on the very first page that totally clicked with me: "Some people find love in times of crisis; I couldn't catch a cold in a pandemic, must less a relationship." By about 4% I was thinking it wasn't going to be for me though. I don't mind if authors talk about the pandemic in stories. I mean it's real, it happened. But the characters in this story called it LD - short for lock down, and made jokes that they didn't say the full words because it was like saying Voldemort. Also, they didn't shake hands or touch each other, these are a group of what seem to be best friends mind you, all because of the pandemic. Still. This book is taking place after the lock down. But what finally made me stop reading, was one of the characters was basically described as becoming a lesbian because she couldn't touch anyone during the lock down except for her female roommate, so now she is engaged to her? WTF? I have nothing wrong with same sex couples, or bi-characters, none of that! But the way the author did this was just weird and felt off and I didn't like it. So yeah, then I went to Goodreads and noticed it only had a 2.5 star rating, and started reading the other reviews, and no longer felt like I was overreacting, and so decided not to waste anymore time on that when I have so many other books I want to read! Whew, that was a long DNF review. But I definitely feel very strongly on my thoughts for this one.
Received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I kept reading hoping it would get better…. it didn’t.
The main characters had no chemistry and it was so dry. Also, the big plot twist almost made me quit reading.
Super disappointed because the description of this book sounds so cute but it really missed the mark.
This book was a big miss for me. I generally love trope-filled romances, and I've read a lot of tech romance that I've enjoyed. But the execution of this novel was so very poor. It wasn't funny, and there was hardly any romance at all. No chemistry. A lot of the side characters were extremely irritating and hard to read. I had to DNF this once the "twist" (ugh) happened because it was just impossible for the book to improve from that point. Sorry to be so harsh, but this is not one I could ever recommend.
I made it about 40% in before I decided not to finish. Leonie’s friends are terrible- super pushy. A lot of the tech talk is boring and over my head. I just could not focus. Wish I could’ve pushed though but this just wasn’t for me.
Thank you for the ARC for my honest review.
I appreciated how the book connects the dots between the history of algorithms and their real-world impact today. O'Connor skillfully weaves in anecdotes and examples that resonate with the digital age, making the content relatable and relevant. The author's neutral tone allows readers to form their own opinions on the ethical considerations surrounding algorithms.
While there are moments when the technical details might feel a bit intricate, O'Connor does a commendable job of breaking down complex concepts into digestible chunks. The book's exploration of algorithms is not just informative but also thought-provoking, prompting readers to reflect on the role these algorithms play in our daily lives.
Ugh I just so wanted to rate this one higher but I can’t. Never in my life have I wanted a third act breakup to stick until now. They sucked together! He is literally a married man, with a major chip on his shoulder about wealth-yet drives around in his Aston Martin and complains about not flying business class *major side-eye”!
I genuinely wanted better for Leonie-he dicked her about, ran hot and cold throughout, and threw so many tantrums for a supposed grown man.
And don’t even get me started on the ending “you love me.” “It’s possible” oh what lovely lukewarm sentiment 🙄.
It was written well though-it would have to be to make me still be angry at a fictional characters actions 5 days after finishing. And I needed to know what happened so I raced through it.
I’ll definitely check out the author again but please no more OW drama and I beg for a likeable MMC.
I am not a fan of cheating and had I known this would of had cheating in it I personally would not have picked it up. I found the parts I did read to be a lot, it felt like when you are in a room and everyone is talking over one another and you are trying to figure out what is being said. This was just a no for me.
I was very intrigued, the blurb really pulled me in but it did disappoint.
There were a lot of elements that annoyed me.
Like Leonie's so-called friends were just horrible, they just kept pushing and pushing. Like it is true sometimes you need a push to get out of your comfort zone but not like this.
She is supposed to be in her late 30's but you can't be that clueless at that age. Nothing is ever her fault. Leonie seems immature.
I could not get a clear read about Jack, one minute he is a golden retriever nerd that is insecure but the other he is a tech person that is so inappropriate that is cheating on his wife. There was too much switching between the 2 personalities, which did not work.
However there where entertaining moments.
But there was more potential with the tech start up arc ....
One hour...
In Paris, American Leonie is set up with Jack. He does not possess anything on her list.
He's younger than her, she's pushing forty, he's closer to thirty.
He's Irish. He's her best tumble in bed.
And he's her boss.
I wish there was more STEM angle to this book.
I wanted to like this one and I really struggled with finishing it. The premise sounded cute but alas the execution was, umm, not great. There was a lot of coding references. I mean a lot. Which is all fine and dandy but when there’s pages of it and then the two main characters have zero chemistry it makes for a challenging read. Then the fact that they are workplace rivals that turn to lovers but again, they have no chemistry between them, added another challenge to get through it. I can usually read a book in a day but this took me almost a week to get through because it wasn’t too much fun to read. The FMC was kinda annoying and then we find out the MMC is married like 75% of the way in!?! Nope. Not cool.
Anyway, there may be some that will enjoy this story. I just wasn’t one of them.
Thanks to One More Chapter and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.
I wasn't sure about this book when I started and I'm still not sure now.
I feel a lot of it was very cliched and standard book tropes.
I enjoyed it wasn't a story about 20 year olds and was closer to my age, but it felt like the only difference was the ages, some characters still acted like your standard rom-com characters. Making decisions and acting like they don't have life experience on their side.
This is such a great STEM romance. Leonie and Jacks chemistry is off the charts. I loved the Paris setting for a portion of the novel and the lesson how sometimes are best laid plans end up surprising us!
Firstly, a huge thanks to NetGalley UK and One More Chapter for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It took me a while to start this book because I had the chance to read some reviews beforehand (which also unfortunately spoiled a significant part of the plot). The initial feedback wasn't positive, and it's rare for me to witness such a unanimous opinion. However, despite the general ratings, I try not to let reviews influence me entirely, as my experience with other books has shown me that my opinion can sometimes be the complete opposite.
I have to admit that this book initially gave off positive vibes: the cover is adorable, and I expected a cute, funny rom-com with a bit of spice. However, it didn't quite live up to expectations. The first few chapters were decent, as they were giving off the impression of a romance with great potential. However, it slowly started to become SO boring. While I usually enjoy the workplace setting in books, this one didn't kept me interested at all (I also skipped a few pages ngl).
In a rare occurrence for me, I found the MMC to be odd and disrespectful throughout almost the entire book. I don’t know if it was solely due to my knowledge of the awful plot twist regarding him, but I don’t think so: that made me hate him even more for sure, but I think I wouldn’t have liked him since the beginning anyway. He just gave off an uncomfortable vibe, so I really couldn’t connect with him at all.
The FMC was definitely better than the MMC, but the potential that the couple showed - especially in the beginning - failed to ignite that spark I seek in romance book couples.
I really didn’t want to agree with the many negative reviews I’ve read, but unfortunately I can't bring myself to rate this book higher than 1 star.
So, a nice read.
It had a bit of too much work in it so it was paced a lot, but..
▫️ wish it had MMC pov
About this book:
📕 her brother is an ass who sleeps with his business partner wife, use FMC for his benefit
📕 MMC isn’t really cheating when his wife has someone else - it’s not cool, but they had an agreement
📕 she stands for herself, I liked that
In the end, it should have his pov, things would be more understandable and loved more.
Thanks NetGallery for this arc.
Absolutely brilliant, loved it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an advance copy, I will definitely be recommending.
I tried so hard... but DNF at 75%.
I was really enjoying myself. The writing style was fine and the characters were relatable enough. Up to the point where it was revealed that the male character was already married and therefore CHEATING ON HIS WIFE, I had a relatively good time.
This just was a point for me where I stopped reading and lost all interest. I'm very sorry to have to DNF this, but this just isn't my cup of tea -- no matter how much they may love each other.
