This classic is one that should be in every home.
It's iconic and such a masterpiece.
The cover on this version is gorgeous.
This is one of my favorite classics to read.
I also very much loved the illustrations through the book.
thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this review opportunity.
The Great Gatsby is one of the greatest pieces of literature of all time. I cannot recommend it enough generally, but if you do want to read it, I highly recommend this version.
The bold, vibrant illustrations ate beautiful she bring Fitzgerald's text to life even more.
Excellent.
Many thanks to F. Scott Fitzgerald, NetGalley, and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this copy.
One of my favorite pieces of literature, I’ve read and reread Gatsby probably more than any other work. Enjoying it again with Robert Nippold’s gorgeous illustrations was wonderful. Bold, vibrant, and capturing the essence of the work. Experiencing them via ebook I’m sure doesn’t do it Justice and I’m excited to add this edition to my physical library when it comes out.
I remember reading Gatsby in high school and thinking, what’s the big deal? As I’ve gotten older I’ve come to appreciate more Fitzgerald’s lyrical writing and his own tumultuous history with his wife Zelda.
Perhaps the brilliance is in the way our heartstrings are tugged by the story of an ill-fated romance, with main characters that we can’t quite like and a narrator who’s there for it all but still at a distance. It’s all uncomfortable but unforgettable.
I was curious what an illustrated edition would be like, and I’m quite excited to see this in print! The art is beautiful and evokes the decadence of the roaring 20s while staying true to the key moments of the book. This is a beautiful edition meant to be savored and put in a prominent place on your bookshelf!
A story we know by heart, enriched by bold and colorful illustrations. They could be less shouting though, more easy on the eyes. But they were nicely placed and easy to follow. Thanks!
I love illustrated classics. I am always intrigued by the twist an illustrator can give to an already beloved novel. This one lived up to every expectation with art deco chapter openers and duochrome illustrations in black an a different accent color for each chapter. The illustrations conveyed mood and illumination brilliantly and enhanced the story. I can wait to see the print version and feel the texture of the pages as well. Lovely book.
The Great Gatsby
By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Illustrations By Robert Nippoldt
I really love this Art Deco-Style designed edition, this edition includes illustrations, maps and foldout pages.
I first read The Great Gatsby in high school at the the time I don't think I really appreciate or really enjoyed myself, but as I got old I found a new love of the classics.
This edition is beautiful the illustration and maps capture the time of the 1920s and the themes of the story about the American Dream.
I will be buying this as a physical copy as soon as I can.
Rating: 5 Stars
I've seen the movie twice, but never read the book until now and I wish I had done it sooner.
If you're not familiar with the story, it centres around the mysterious self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby, who in the summer of 1922 lives at West Egg, where the nouveaux riches have built their mansions. Across the bay in East Egg are the beautiful residences of the old-money folks, including the wealthy Ivy League Tom Buchanan, husband of the beautiful Daisy, whom Gatsby courted during WWI. Gatsby now attempts to reclaim her after losing her to Buchanan due to his lack of funds.
When I first started the book, I expected this to be a reasonably 3 star. It wasn't until the plot takes a tragically unexpected turn, that I was a lot more invested. The final few chapters are a lovely and tear-jerking break from the remainder of the story's nonchalant humour.
I didn't give this five star, because I don't consider this my favourite book yet, but it definitely deserves all the hype, a true cult classic.
The Great Gatsby is one of the few books I actually read in high school for required reading and read again because I wanted to. The illustrations help paint a picture of the 20s in New York. They match up really well what I’ve always had in my mind while reading, especially the flappers and cars. This is not a photo book so you can’t rely on the illustrations to tell the story- they are there to enhance it as you read.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love this classic any more than I do I am blown away by the beautiful illustrations in this edition. The capture the spirit of the American dream for the time period. I thought the illustrations created more depth and enjoyment. The chapter headings were stunning. I am so excited to see this version in person when the book releases.
My junior year of high school The Great Gatsby was a required reading. I didn't expect to love this story nearly as much as I did. I became fully immersed in the life and the world of Gatsby. That year for Christmas the only thing I wanted was my own copy of the book, since I had been reading the schools copy. My English teacher even gave me permission to keep the book as long as I wanted if I promised to returned it by the end of the school year. At this point (5 years later) I've read and reread The Great Gatsby more times than I can begin to count. It is beautiful and messy and real. I have a friend who hates the book because none of the characters are 'likable,' but I think what she's really getting at is the the characters feel real. They lie, and cheat, and pretend to everything together, but don't we all, at least a little bit. This story is sad and a little twisted, but it's perfect and dazzling.
This version of the book transforms the beauty of F. Scott Fitzgerald's words into a visual beauty. The illustrations are gorgeous and do this story such justice. If a reader struggles to create the images a of world in their head, this book is perfect for them, allowing them to SEE what's happening on the page. I cannot recommend this version of the story enough, you get the classic writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald with the beautiful Art-Deco Illustrations by Robert Nippoldt.
Robert Nippoldt captures the beauty of the 1920's with beautiful artwork that sets the scenes of the story.
The additional supplements that are included, documents the post-war era that includes the prohibition and a time of social upheaval. This edition of the iconic classic novel is a must have!
A pretty embellishment to the great classic. The illustrations are beautiful and really set the mood for the roaring 20s setting of the book. There is an art deco style chapter page, each one in a different color, so each chapter has its own color scheme, which I really liked. A detail I also appreciated was that some of the more pivotal scenes of the book had black backgrounds, which made them stand out and make you pay attention, because something is important is happening.
Just like the one I read earlier this year... I just don't think classics are my thing. But don't worry because the story isn't that bad... just i am!
This was my first re-read of The Great Gatsby since high school and after watching the movie. Interesting to see how characters change in your mind: I used to think Daisy was the worst, but now I find her much more interesting. I still hate Tom, though. I understand the symbolism much more as well. I am now wondering if I actually read this book when I was supposed to in high school. It's a lot better than I (don't) remember. There are some truly beautiful sections - it's hard not to love. It has a 1920's American setting, glamourous parties I wish I could attend, unrequited love, scandal, and a tragic hero.
This edition updates a timeless classic with gorgeous illustrations that effortlessly and vividly capture the decadence of Gatsby.
The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books ever. I got this book because I wanted to reread. This edition is stunning. I will always love this book.
Pros: I don't think the text of this modern classic needs a review, so instead I will focus on this beautiful new edition. I have loved seeing classics reprinted in different collections, so I hope this is the first of many in a collection. The illustrations fit the time period of the 1920s perfectly. The art deco-inspired covered will pop on bookshelves and bookstagram.
Cons: None except I think readers will want more books printed like this one!
Illustrating any novel is tricky business: be overly prescriptive and you risk preventing the reader from using their imagination as they read; be overly ambiguous and you risk perplexing the reader. Nippoldt struck the appropriate balance between these extremes, building an atmosphere with his images that make 1920’s New York come alive without telling the reader how to think or diminishing the creative exercise of reading the text. Here are images of the the New York City skyline, the infamous green light at the end of Gatsby’s dock, and the spectacles of T.J. Eckelburg but also lots of images that move beyond the novel’s most salient symbols. As a high school English teacher, I’ve probably read this novel at least 30-40 times along with my students. The included images were comforting and familiar and immediately evoked the characters, setting, and—most importantly—the mood of the Fitzgerald’s novel. Perhaps most refreshingly, while this edition of The Great Gatsby would be an excellent tool for those reading the novel for the first time (including high school students), it was also a unique and original work of art in its own right. You could tell that it was a true labor of love for the illustrator.

I have no clue why The Great Gatsby is considered an American classic. I read it in grade school, I've watched the movie, and I read it again and I still go no entertainment value from it whatsoever.
This book being popular is just a case of the hive mind telling the masses what they have to consume and people liking to feel superior by saying this is one of their favorite books.
The only reason I am giving this book one star is because of the illustrations. They are great, but even they can’t make this dud of a book interesting.
**Thank you, NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.**
So excited to see the story with the illustrations to bring the story to life. Just wish it was available on the kindle app. Great to reread a nostalgic story
