Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Select for this ALC!
- If you are looking for a light, witchy rom com set in a castle in Scotland, I would definitely recommend this one!
- There is insta love on the part of the MMC, however it didn't bother me like it sometimes does. The fact that there's magic/witchy-ness makes it possible to assume that there was something to cause the instant infatuation. He then backs that up with specific parts of her personality that he likes, which also helped.
- I loved the magical creatures in this one-especially the brownie and Clyde!
- I hadn't read the first book in this series, and I was still able to enjoy this one without much confusion! I would recommend reading them in order, but it's not a requirement to still enjoy this one.
- I felt like the pacing towards the end, specifically with how the relationship progresses, was a little rushed.
- The narrators were great! If you tend to listen at faster speeds, you may need to slow the speed down for this one. I usually read at 2x, but the accent for the MMC was so thick (no complaints here!) that I was listening at 1.25x or 1.5x.
This was a cute, cozy read nestled in the Scottish highlands. If you're into magical realism and sweet romance books - then pick this one up
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of Wild Scottish Love in exchange of my honest opinion.
Wild Scottish Love is the second installment of the Enchanted Highlands series and honestly I believed this one was better than the first.
We follow Loren, a restaurant Chef that after "loosing" her job, decide to accept an offer to work in this castle in Scotland. Arriving there she will learn about the magic of the place and how her background actually is tightly intertwined with the local history.
Although I'm not the type of person that like insta-love stories, I appreciate that the author stretched the romance story by giving Loren a purpose to stay focus on her new job and making the restaurant succeed. On the other hand, I thought it was very endearing seeing Munroe, our male main character, actively pursuing and being head over heels for her.
And although in this book our FMC also had to growth and figure it out how she would be accepted by the magical order (which took way too long in the previous one), I liked the other themes that were approached here, such as when pride is hindering one's life, difference of classes, the need to prove oneself does not exclude the need to accept help, putting boundaries to family, among others
I will say, however, similar to the other book of the series, the side characters shined here almost as bright as the main ones. And I mean both human side characters as the magical beings.
Lastly, I got this ARC as an audiobook and I would like to say the narrators did such a good job! I loved hearing the difference in accents (and there were 3 very distinct ones).
Overall I think Tricia is better developing this world and I still hope to have a book just with Graham.
Wild Scottish Love is the second book in Tricia O’Malley’s Enchanted Highlands series. Lia Blackwood, a rather well known Boston chef, has been left adrift when the owner of her beloved restaurant passes away and her slimy son takes over. The final straw occurs when she is presented with a box of live crickets to add to her menu. Not happening! Lia, and some of her staff, walk that very moment.
Fortuitously, Lia receives a call that day from American Sophie MacKnight from McAlpine Castle in Loren Brae, Scotland, coincidentally where her father hails from. Lia is being offered the opportunity to develop, design, and run a new restaurant within the castle. In addition to airfare, her own apartment within the castle, and an enticing salary, she will be given free reign with the restaurant, something that has been a dream for her.
As Lia shares this news at Sunday family dinner, her father reveals that his great grandmother was a kitchen witch at that very castle. Thinking this is the stuff of myth and legend, Lia takes their love and best wishes, sublets her apartment, and flies eastward to a new future.
After settling in a B&B in Loren Brae and ready to get the lay of the land, Lia stops in the local pub to satisfy both her hunger and her curiosity for the locals. Here she meets quite a few of them, including Monroe Curaigh, owner of Common Gin Distillery and back amongst friends seeking to open a new distillery. These acquaintances will all prove beneficial as Lia becomes an integral part of the community as it is later revealed to her all the reasons she was invited to come.
This is a delightful story, and series! Suspend disbelief! Absorb the lovely myth and its charming characters, and enjoy. I very much enjoyed this book and do recommend it!
i really enjoyed this! the narrator’s deep baritone was my favourite haha. It was so very nice to listen to and relax. The romance was cute too, although I do wish it was more of a slow burn!
This started strong with a strong family and heroine. Chef that was going to Scotland to work in a castle. Sounds great, once in scotland I felt like the plot was too much and all over the place. Our hero just kept thinking about sleeping with her which just made me dislike him. The whole magical aspect felt out of nowhere and I didn’t really follow along, it was important but would be forgotten about at times. the middle just felt too muddled. Cute idea but needed to be better exacted. I did get the audio and the two narrators were pretty good, I felt the woman doing male voices was a bit old sounding but I got use to it after a while.
Lia is a down-on-her-luck chef in Boston, Massachusetts, until SCOTLAND comes to call. Specifically, she's asked to open up a restaurant in an ACTUAL CASTLE! But the endearing people of this quaint village don't just need her for her cooking skills. They might just need her for her magic! The premise is already fun, but add in some cute mythical creatures and an insanely attractive highlander named Munroe, and this book is near perfection! Munroe is the "sunshine" to Lia's "grumpy" (in this grumpy/sunshine romance). I loved listening to his Scottish brogue in the audiobook version of this tale. (Though this American sometimes had a bit of trouble understanding what he was saying, haha!) This cozy romantasy was steamy, mysterious, humorous, AND supernatural!
This is the second book in the Enchanted Highlands series. It builds nicely upon book one: Wild Scottish Knight, and prepares for what should be an epic event in the upcoming book: Wild Scottish Rose (which is being released on January 19th, 2024). The ending of THIS book, Wild Scottish Love, was satisfying on its own. It didn't frustrate the reader with a cliffhanger, which I appreciated. The pace of the story was great, very entertaining every time I picked it up. The characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, but I was still thoroughly charmed by most of the characters. I'm looking forward to reading more Tricia O'Malley in the future!
I'd like to thank @dreamscape_media Select and @netgalley for the e-ARC of this audiobook. All opinions expressed are my own.
If you are looking for a cozy, romantic, fantasy vibe (with some hunky Scotish men and some SPICE) ... look no further, i have found the book for you.
This book follows Leah, a Boston Chef who finds herself building someone elses dream. One day, enough is enough and she up and quits. Little does she know the opportunity of a life time is just an email away! This book is filled with Scottish lore, hunky men, witty banter, a strong FMC and a... Kitchen Goblin?!!
The ista-love was very cheesy, but I had a fun time. I can’t imagine how the narrators felt when they recorded the scenes but they both did an amazing job and made it even more entertaining. I LOLed at all the cheesiness. When I found out that this was the 2nd book in the series, I sought out the first one, too. You don’t have to read the first book to enjoy this one, but I think it would be more enjoyable considering that the first one outlines a bit more of the lore and “restoring the Order”. Overall, it’s a light-hearted, cute, and super low stakes rom com — so nothing complicated and easily digestible. I really enjoyed the magical elements & charismatic side characters.
3 stars if I would've read it on my own. 4 stars because of the narrators. :)
If you need something easy to consume, light, whimsical and quick- this series is for you! I saw this book described as a Hallmark movie, and I feel this is spot-on. The romance is immediate. Sure, it lacks depth, but it has magical beings and a secret magic society in Scotland- what more do you need? A unicorn? No, it has that too. Basically modern Jamie Fraser, plus cookery. It’s just a good time. I can’t recommend the audiobook enough here. Our hero’s voice is BUTTER y’all. For my American ears- it’s catnip. I could listen to literally anything if it’s his voice. Do yourself a favor and download it! 3 ⭐️
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this audio ARC, in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
I'm a sucker for anything set in Scotland so this synopsis drew me in. I didn't realize it was the second book in a series but it worked out, I don't feel like I missed anything by reading it first. First of all the audio narration is amazing!!!!! I listened to this in one sitting. I loved the incorporation of Scottish Legends and lore to make this a cozy paranormal. I wouldn't really call it fantasy since it's set in the real world. I loved the small town and that's usually something I don't enjoy in stories but these characters were so witty and charming. I thought the characters had great chemistry. Monroe is such a sweet alpha hero and I loved that about him. I though Leah had great character growth throughout the story as well. This was really enjoyable and now I want to check out other books by this author. FIVE STARS.
Here's the deal:
There were things I LOVED about this - I loved that the two main characters acted like actual adults rather than doing the whole "we can't communicate about our issues" thing. Thank you, Tricia O'Malley for that! I loved the magical elements, the ghost cow was amazing, and having a circle of bad ass magic women protecting an ancient relic was a cool premise.
Here's what I did NOT love: I felt like the conflict was just not there. I liked that the main conflict was not between the two MCs, but I would have liked for there to have been SOME sort of conflict. What little was there was less than a chapter and very anticlimactic. I wish there had been MORE about the magic circle of women protecting the ancient relic. I understand that this is one in a series, and there will probably be more about that to come, but I really wanted more of the magic. Overall, I thought it was just ok.
4 1/2 stars rounded up**
This is the *cutest* book I have read in quite a while. I adored Munroe and Lia together, and Munroe is the most gooey cinnamon roll and I will love him ‘til the Highland coos come home.
Lia leaves her job and family in Boston when she is offered a job as a chef in a Scottish castle. Here she encounters gin entrepreneur Munroe and a merry band of adorable Scottish characters. I appreciated that although this is part of a series (I have not read the others), it stands just as well on its own. I could also listen to Will Watt recite a textbook and it would be swooooony.
I was not sure about the plot being so magic-heavy, but it lended a nice whimsical touch to the storyline without being too much. I enjoyed learning the bits of Scottish folklore and mythical creatures I hadn’t heard of before. There was enough open-door spice to keep me interested without being really overbearing to the plot.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one and will probably look into the rest of the trilogy!
This series is so much fun! Perfectly and wonderfully cheesy.
Lovely Scottish setting. Cute town and townspeople. Interesting mythical creatures. A compelling larger story developing with so many cool directions the story could go.
I particularly loved the kitchen witch (chef)/ kitchen goblin storyline of this book.
Can’t wait for the next installment.
Thank you to netgalley and publishers for the chance to review an advance audio copy.
