This short story is so weird. But the writing is brilliant and immersive, and even though the story was so short, there was tension throughout. I felt as though I was living in this other world, and I wasn't sure even at the end what was real, was there magic? Thanks again NetGalley

This book was a spooky fairytale... haunting and creepy and the story enraptured you from start to finish yet... I was expecting something more of the likes of The Beautiful Ones likes something magical but spooky and I didn't get it.
Still I enjoyed this a lot.

The lover by Silvia Moreno Garcia is an Amazon original story. It is a short story which can be read in one sitting.
It is like a fairy-tale retold. Silvia is really good at setting a chilly, gloomy enchanted atmosphere with her words. This too felt like her other works.
This is story of a girl, a young girl Judith who believes in folklores. Her life isn't easy, her overbearing grandmother and sister look down upon her. And then enters a handsome man who might change her life and he does but in unexpected ways.
It is good for one time read. Although I haven't necessarily liked the ending of her books, I have definitely enjoyed her books and this one is no exception.

3 out of 5 stars.
This was not my favourite Silvia Moreno-Garcia story, but it was a fast read and I'd definitely be interested if she wrote something longer in this fairytale-esque genre.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC
I really liked this short story! I was pleasantly surprised at how well-developed the characters and the plot were despite the short length. It also gave perfect fall and winter vibes. This was my first time reading anything written by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and it definitely makes me want to pick up some of her novels. I would recommend this to any fiction reader who is looking for a quick seasonal story.

The Lover is a short but effective Grimm fairy tale.
Silvia Moreno-Garcia always delivers the lush, dark stories and this is no exception. At only 40 pages, we still have a rich world and characters that pop off the page. It’s a real credit to the author that such a vivid image is painted in such a short amount of time.
I don’t want to say too much due to the length of the story, but this is a great short read. Definitely an adult fairy tale but worth it, especially for fans of Moreno-Garcia.

This was a very enjoyable read. Even though it was a short story, Silvia manages to write the main character in a way that you completely connect with her. You can relate to her feelings and frustration toward her older sister.
The ending totally surprised me.
It's worth the read.
I love Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I was seeing if her new novel was up when this one appeared. Its fast and great and I freaking love it!
This short story is an enjoyable snack of a read. It’s a sort of adult fairy tale, complete with shape shifters and an evil sister. For readers who like their happy endings on the gothic side, this might hit the spot.
It’s too bad this is an Amazon-only release; the author’s fans at the library would probably like to come across this there.
a slightly different version of little red riding hood - or at least that’s how it felt to me.
written in the typical style of this author this book is a nicely done short story that is so much more then expected from first glance.
i would go into this story just expecting a typical slightly dark easy but wonderful to read story.
highly recommend!
This was such a good read. I was looking forward to this one for a while so I’m happy I got a chance to read it. It was dark and short but still pretty cool. I liked the twist and the way the author wrote the MC. It kept me eager to find out the way it all ended. I enjoyed it and would suggest others check it out.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the arc.
This is a captivating and fantastic short story. It sucks you in right away and the atmosphere and vibe is set within a few pages. This reads like a classic gothic fairytale and I loved it! You learn so much about the characters in a such a short amount of time and the story is short but not rushed at all. You watch Judith go from a meek girl to the epitome of female rage in this short 43 pages. I do wish we had a gotten a few more pages after that ending but also can appreciate the vagueness. I loved the author's writing style and will definitely be checking out their other work!
This short story by "Mexican Gothic" author Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a dark fairy tale. We have a hungry wolf, lustful married man, lonely mistreated sister & a mean older sister. Overall, this was an extremely quick read but it kept me engaged. There is a bit of spellcasting, sexy times and a nice wrapped-up ending.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for providing me with a copy of this story to review.
Silvia Moreno-Garcia is unmatched! The fairytale writing, the tension building, the characters and creature! So much in such a short story, I loved it. She never disappoints.

The Lover is a novella, only 43 pages. I felt that it wasn't quite enough to get attached to any of the characters or the story. It was enjoyable and quick but left me wanting more.
It seems tat every so often Silvia Moreno-Garcia decides to take a break from writing awesome horror and thrillers and veers into fantasy land. Specifically here something like fairy tale romance fantasy. Which I find very weird.
I mean, take this short tale: the writing is still there and still good, but the plot is just gushingly girly not to mention wildly predictable. If that’s your thing, go for it. Otherwise pass and read one of her many terrific novels. Thanks Netgalley.
This was a very immersive and entertaining short story. It hooked me in from the very beginning and kept me hooked until the end. I liked the writing style and the kind of Grimm fairytale vibes of the setting and characters. I really wasn’t sure how the story was going to go for most of it, but I have to say I am pretty satisfied with the ending, I think I may have actually cackled out loud when reading the final line.
This is actually my first time reading Silvia’s work (though I have two of her books on my tbr) and I really enjoyed it.
Final rating would be 4.5 stars but since I can’t do half stars I round up.
Thank you to netgalley, the publishers, and the author for the arc I read.
I will never skip a Silvia Moreno-Garcia work. She captures more in this intriguing and haunting novella than most writers. She is truly a gift to the literary world. Thoroughly enjoyed.

I read this book in a day and I never looked back! The twist and the plot were pretty easy to identify but the different POV's kept me intrigued to see how everything was going to unfold. A couple of the characters were so unlikable that it made it hard to feel bad or connect with them in any way.
Overall I give this 5 out 5 because it really was a great book and I will definitely read more from this Author. I enjoyed the thrill of the plot and its twists.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC copy of the book!
Silvia Moreno-Garcia never misses and she didn't with this one either!
This story was the perfect length and had such a strong vibe. Her books always hit around 4 stars for me and this was no exception.
