A lovely book that offers a marvelous journey though not just illustrators' sketchbooks but also through their thinking and craft. Highly recommended for artists and anyone who loves art, illustration, and storytelling.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
I'm in love - I feel like an art voyeur with a small museum in my lap. I'm not all illustrator aficionado, but this book made me want to learn more. Being able to hear from some of the illustrators directly on how they utilize sketchbooks was fascinating as well.
We often see finished pieces hanging in museums or on the page of a book, but being able to see the process behind the final product was illuminating, I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in any type of art or illustration!
Salisbury offers us a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the private sketchbooks of 60 illustrators. Many of the artists were familiar to me like Edward Gorey, Tove Jansson, Beatrix Potter, Ronald Searle, Brian Wildsmith, and Shaun Tan. Others were brand new, and it was a pleasure being introduced to their work. There are brief bios of all the included illustrators.
This is a lovely book that begs for repeated viewings.
This is a great foray into the mind of the illustrator which comes to life through a visual journey. This is intriguing as it compiles real examples from illustrators and gives insight into their thought processes, personalities, and visions. The book is organized by illustrators instead of chapters. Several pages are given to show you their specific views. Illustrators include Takako Aoki, Thomas Bewick, and Emma Carlisle. The artistic expressions showcased are breathtaking and original with each containing a different style. Highly recommended for illustrators, artists, and students exploring these mediums.
I was mesmerized by this book. I didn’t know most of the artists but I was so amazed at all the different styles and techniques. Some were simple sketches, while others were so extraordinary. This was wonderful and I don’t have enough words to describe how much some moved me.
I can’t wait to browse this amazing book in person! Definitely one for the shelf of an artist, illustrator or anyone who loves a book full of art!
The artists featured are varied and interesting and I discovered some illustrators new to me as well as some I recognized.
I absolutely cannot wait to get a hard copy of this book for my classroom. This book of artists sketchbooks is so well organized, researched and put together. This will be an amazing classroom tool to give my students a look into the art and thought processes of other artists.
This was an interesting book to read. I enjoyed the sketches and illustrations and the various styles of art. It was also interesting to learn a little bit about each artist.
Illustrators' Sketchbooks gives anyone interested, students, artists, and admirers, a look into various artists' sketchbooks. These looks are accompanied by prose that places the sketchbook in a time and place within the illustrator's life and how that artist used their book to grow their career and start projects. This book would be great for any aspiring artist or student looking to get a glimpse into the creative process of people who are noted to be successful.
What an interesting book! I loved reading a bit about each illustrator and getting glimpses into their sketchbooks and seeing different artistic styles. It was quite remarkable.
This was a fun look through sketchbooks of different illustrators, along with some background info about them and their careers.
