There are so many wonderful tips and techniques in this little guide to Finding Your Calm, from meditation to mindfulness, aromatherapy to Chakra work, and so much more. I was particularly intrigued by the section about the vagus nerve, as it's something I've heard many Doctors and practitioners speak about.
The following is a quote that really jumped out at me.
"Self-care is what gave me my own wings and the power to save myself. Learning to fill my own cup is what set me free from the pits of despair of anxiety and depression. It was that monumental for me and it can be that monumental for you too!"

This book gives a lot of different ways to find your calm. Especially if you are an empath. I found it calming just to read this book.

I was disappointed in the content and writing style of Finding your Calm: Twelve Methods to Release Anxiety, Relieve Stress & Restore Peace. Several of the chapters lacked references and contained overly simplistic and generalized descriptions and claims. The frequent use of second person language, making assumptions that may not be applicable to every reader, could result in a disengagement of readers from the material. The final chapter, “Amplifying Joy and Gratitude Through Mindfulness,” was particularly difficult to read, characterized by an incoherent structure fleeting from one disparate subject to the next. On the whole, there is a certain lack of credibility in the authors' assertions. However, I found the chapters that described the vagus nerve and EFT to be insightful and practical; each of these sections included citations to back the authors' claims, useful exercises for the reader to practice, and a more professional tone and style. The inclusion of these elements in the remainder of the book would have increased its quality.

Thank you NetGalley and Llewellyn Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I recently had the opportunity to explore "Finding Your Calm," a compilation of self-care techniques designed to promote relaxation and serenity, courtesy of some prominent New Age authors. I read this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Overall, I like the book, and I invited a few of the authors on my podcast to chat.

The book's premise is undoubtedly promising, as it boasts contributions from twelve of Llewellyn's top authors, each introducing a distinct New Age relaxation technique. The intention is clear: to present readers with a variety of methods, both scientific and spiritual, to help achieve a state of calm. Yet, like any compilation, certain chapters and authors resonated with me more than others.

One of the primary issues I encountered while reading "Finding Your Calm" was the lack of a cohesive thread that could have linked and united all these concepts more fluidly. While each essay delves into different aspects of self-care, it often felt like the same ground, emphasizing the importance of self-care, was repeatedly covered. This led to some redundancy and could have been alleviated with more skillful editing.

Additionally, I would have appreciated more citations in some chapters, as they would have lent greater credibility to the authors' claims and recommendations.

Regarding the individual chapters:

- "Body Wisdom" by Emily Francis: Covering such a vast topic in one chapter felt rushed. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with this author on my podcast and want to explore her other works in which there's more space to engage with her topic.

- "Empaths" by Kristy Robinett: This chapter offered some practical insights and tricks for empaths, which I found useful. I didn't consider myself an empath when I read this one, and after my discussion with Kristy on my podcast, I am reluctantly considering that I may be one. Whether or not you identify as an empath, there are useful techniques in this chapter.

- "Aromatherapy" by Gail Bussi: Bussi provided specific recipes and guidelines for aromatherapy, making this chapter highly practical.

- "Visualization" by Chanda Parkinson: Some useful visualization techniques were presented here; I have yet to try them specifically.

- "Chakra Work" by Jiulio Consiglio: As expected in one chapter, this chapter offered a surface-level explanation of chakras. A bit more grounding in history and the yogic tradition would have been nice.

- "Astrology" by Leah Patterson: Unfortunately, a significant error was noted in this chapter, which stated that Scorpio was a mutable sign, when it is a fixed sign. Otherwise, it is a helpful way to think about self care.

- "Vagus Nerve" by Cyndi Dale: This chapter felt chaotic and largely unrelated to its main topic, the vagus nerve.

- "Meditation" by Shai Tubali: This chapter provided useful insights into meditation. I have been thinking about those principles off an on ever since reading it.

- "EFT" by Amy B. Scher: The chapter on Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) was practical and informative. I love EFT, and I think this is a good intro to it.

- "Good Sleep" by Angela Wix: This chapter offered useful tips for achieving restful sleep.

- "ASMR" by Shannon Yrizarry: The inclusion of this "newest" information was a unique and interesting addition.

- "Mindfulness" by Melanie Klein: I would have preferred a clearer distinction between mindfulness and meditation in this chapter.

"Finding Your Calm" is a mixed bag of self-care ideas, each with its own degree of usefulness. While it offers a diverse range of relaxation techniques, some chapters lacked depth and clarity. If you are open to picking and choosing from the various self-care approaches presented, you may find value in this book. I would have liked a more cohesive structure and greater attention to detail in some places.

Quote from the Introduction: "This book aims to provide you with a wide range of new ideas, perspectives, and practices available in your back pocket so you can be even more empowered in this challenging world."

Finding Your Calm : 12 methods to release anxiety, relieve stress and restore peace was an absolutely interesting book.
I marked a lot of things and learned so much more even.
There's so much going on from different perspectives - no matter if you look at your body or your brain, what kind of human you are and so on.
It really fascinated me to read about all those things! The things that can influence you although don't notice it right away and how you can deal with stress, anxiety and the peace.
It's a really important topic nowadays because everything's so fast and everyone wants more - more fame, more money, more love, more acceptance or just a purpose.
When you know how you can deal with all that, you can concentrate on your health, your happiness and believe in yourself.

Although there were a lot of good chapters, I also had a few chapters I honestly skipped because they didn't catch my interest.
All in all a really enjoyable read!

Thanks a lot to Llewellyn Publishing for this ARC via NetGalley.
This is my honest review in my own words.

This is a great compilation of techniques for relaxing. Who doesn’t need to relax with how things are so crazy in the world these days?

What I like most is that there are a collection of approaches and each author takes you through their selected practice and leaves you with tools to help you find the peace within.

I could not have received this book at a more apt time in my life. I am recovering from knee surgery and it has been a long, challenging battle. Reading this has opened my eyes to many different ways of healing. From the first few pages, I found myself highlighting many key phrases, quotes, and insightful ideas. I hope to take many of these positive techniques and exercises and apply them to my everyday life. I thought it was a great concept to have 12 different experts write 12 different ways of finding calmness. I was amazed at how emotional I got whilst reading certain chapters. I am not that kinda lady. So take it from moi, it is a powerful read!

Great introduction to various techniques and practices. The information here is basic so those familiar with any technique may be bored, but it's a great overview for beginners and a good start to learning more.
