This is an excellent book that does a great job of providing interesting and delicious recipes that will help control blood sugar levels (for both type 1 and type II/prediabetes/gestational diabetes). You don't have to be a sufferer of a chronic ailment - you just have to want to prevent, put in remission, or easily control that situation.
The book's heart is that you don't have to count carbs or nutrients or have any precise nutrient calculations these days - managing diabetes is easier than ever. The book breaks down as follows: Plant Filled Tips and Tools for Diabetes (following a plant forward diabetes friendly lifestyle, a Well Stocked Pant Based Pantry, Tips to Punch Up Plant Protein, 12 no Recipe Required Vegan Recipes, Sample Plant Based Menus); The Recipe Collection For Diabetes (party apps and snacks, main dishes (breakfasts, brunches, lunches, Dinners, burgers sandwiches, wraps), bowls and skillet meals, salads (bean, grain, leafy green), sides (bean, grain, vegetable), soups and stews, desserts and drinks, glossary, index.
The thing that sets this book apart is that it is chock full of very useful tips - I have read a LOT of cookbooks and still learned quite a bit here from those tips. A lot of tips were especially relevant to eating plant based, and therefore make this an excellent book for those wanting to explore eating healthier. But note that the book is mostly black and white, with only a few color photographs of some of the recipes in the middle.
There are a wide range of recipes, especially main dish meals. Including: minty kibbeh-inspired 'meatballs', squashed chickpea 'eggs' with plant based goat cheese, BBQ stovetop popcorn, plant-based breakfast sausage patties, dark chocolate raspberry pudding, portabella 'steak' fajitas, black bean/poblano/tortilla soup, California cannellini chili, and many more.
Each recipes features large type. A heading and nicely detailed introductory information below that. Serving size, servings, prep time and cook time. Bullet point ingredients and then short numbered paragraph steps. Nutrition info (choices/exchanges), calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, carbs, dietary fiber, sugars, added sugars protein, phosphorus). At the bottom of each recipe are tips - everything from serving suggestions, substitutions, explanations of ingredients or terms, and even additional recipes if called for (which is nice so you don't have to go hunting for an ingredient that has its own recipe).
There are some excellent recipes here that I enjoyed making. What's more, there is a lot of information on why the recipe is particular useful or effective for diabetes - helping to educate and motivate to keep diabetes in check and under control. In all, very pleased with this book. One could only want more color/photographs. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
I read this book for multiples reasons. I adore and read cookbooks like many read novels, enjoy trying new recipes, am concerned about staying healthy and eating cleaner, am involved in the care of family members with type 2 diabetes and I'm always looking for new ways to use vegetables and grains. There is some important educational info as well as a broad spectrum of recipes for all meals. Some really simple and others a bit more involved, but all delicious. I also liked that it used many items in many kitchens and gave great suggestions as to what to add to the next staple shopping list. This isn’t just for people with diabetes, but for those who just want to eat healthier and tastier.
Thank you for the opportunity to read your plant based diet for diabetes book. I'm trying to change my husbands diet to prevent him from turning diabetic seeing how he's borderline. I've learned so much and the recipes are delicious and easy.
I have multiple family members who have diabetes and are trying to move away from a primarily meat-based diet. I liked the quantity of recipes in this cookbook, and felt like they were well written. I can't wait to try some of the out.

Even if I don't suffer from Diabetes nor vegetarian, it's never too soon to take care of your health. This book is great to have, to be able to diversify your meal plans, even if you do eat meat. I am impatient to try out quite a few of these recipes.
I have been trying to find recipes that are good for me using ingredients that I eat as a type 2 diabetic. There are some good recipes with simple ingredients and easy to follow instructions. The author shares information on how to follow a plant based diet for type 2 diabetes.

As a Type 2 diabetic, I have been trying to determine if a Plant-Based diet is a way for me. The recipes did look interesting and the concept was sound. I honestly struggled to make some of the recipes.
Thank you, NetGalley and HCI Books. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a very interesting and informative cookbook. It really brings to life that health cooking and eating is enjoyable and tasty. Great nutritious and enjoyable recipes and I look forward to working my way through this book and trying as many recipes as I can.
The recipes are easy to follow and easy to make, the ingredients are fresh and healthy and the book is a great way to get started on a healthier approach to food and cooking. Great information within the book and this is one cookbook that should be on everyone's bookshelf.
Thank you NetGalley and HCI Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Everyone assumes that eating a healthy diet means eating a bland, boring diet. Jackie Newgent has proven that theory WRONG! My family's history gives them the predisposition to diabetes, it has impacted almost every family. I am determined to lower the chances of diabetes in this family but I also pride myself on serving nutritious, balanced meals that taste good or even better, delicious, so I spens alot of time looking for recipes that will fill this requirements. I'm happy to say that weve tried 75% of the recipes in this cookbook and everyone has asked for more. My neighbors are all happy to serve as test subjects too. The reipes are easy to follow, use pantry staples and give clear nutrition guidance, If you are a baseball fanatic, like I am, this book bats 1000. Start correcting your family's eating habits or enrich their daily lives now.
Some good recipes with simple ingredients and easy to follow instructions. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
Thanks to netgalley for this book that has lots of recipes and ideas for cooking - A delectable plant-based cookbook and eating guide for preventing and managing diabetes and pre-diabetes from award-winning cookbook author and registered dietitian Jackie Newgent. This book was helpful.
I just reviewed The Plant-Based Diabetes Cookbook by Jackie Newgent, RDN, CDN. #ThePlantBasedDiabetesCookbook #NetGalley
Love trying new recipes. This is full of great plant based ones that I’m so excited to try. It’s crazy how many recipes derive from strictly plants. The world would benefit from using this book as a tool for sustainability.
You don't have to have diabetes to enjoy using this cookbook. It has a wide variety of clean and green menu items for anyone that is interested in a healthier lifestyle. I loved that the book includes everything from breakfasts to desserts. The recipes are easy to follow and I had most of the ingredients on hand. I don't personally have diabetes, however it does run in my family and this cookbook provides a great way of being proactive in your food choices for overall better health.
Great cookbook, even for those who are not diabetic or vegan. I loved the variety and simplicity of the recipes, as well as the clear instructions. I don’t always follow recipes well, so having very simple instructions is a must for me; I also don’t love to cook so the simpler the better!
Synopsis (from Netgalley, the provider of the book for me to review.)

A delectable plant-based cookbook and eating guide for preventing and managing diabetes and pre-diabetes from award-winning cookbook author and registered dietitian Jackie Newgent.
Diabetes is an epidemic in the United States. More than 11 percent of the population is living with diabetes, and 38 percent of U.S. adults have prediabetes. Diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and lower-limb amputation. Recent research has also shown a connection between diabetes and dementia, hearing loss, and some forms of cancer. Experts point to diet as a key component in preventing and treating diabetes and prediabetes—particularly one featuring fruits and vegetables. That’s where The Plant-Based Diabetes Cookbook comes in, helping people with diabetes—or at risk for developing it—enjoy more plants. The key word is “enjoy.”
Here, Jackie Newgent, RDN, CDN, an award-winning cookbook author and classically trained chef, offers 100 percent plant-based recipes that are full of flavour with fresh, modern appeal. At the same time, the dishes appeal to all eaters, not just vegetarians. The book is packed with more than 125 recipes, plenty of hearty main dishes, tasty menus, and hundreds of helpful tips. Following today’s current nutrition therapy guidelines, readers can follow a flexible plan without being overly focused on calories, carb-counting, or other strict macronutrient or micronutrient parameters. People with diabetes and prediabetes—and their families and friends—will benefit from the deliciousness The Plant-Based Diabetes Cookbook brings to the table, and the good health it brings to their lives!
Diabetes is an epidemic everywhere in the world where people can afford to eat…and sometimes not. Rice is cheap, flour is cheap and the incidents of diabetes in the poor of India is now an epidemic, with China not too far behind for the same reasons. (In fact, rice is so important in India that due to weather-related shortages of rice, they are now not exporting non-basmati rice and that has led to grocery stores in the USA limiting the amount of rice one can buy at the same time as there has been hoarding-level shopping going on. Toilet paper level hoarding-shopping-behaviours going on … think people trying to buy 100 of the 50 lb bags at Costco, but that may be for restaurants as one cannot tell for sure. (Curious? https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/food-news/us-rice-rush-people-in-us-hoarding-rice-after-india-bans-export/articleshow/102195629.cms?from=mdr )
I like that the author mentions carb counting but that is something to keep in mind, IN MY OPINION, as plant-based diets tend to be heavy in carbs as people rely on grains, bread, pasta and rice to fill them up. It does seem simple and as long as you focus on whole foods (why have chick’n with its 88 ingredients over chicken with 1??) and don’t go for the plant-based convenience foods that are everywhere.
The recipes are easy to do no matter what your cooking skills are: you don’t need to be a classically trained chef to make them. Nor will you get so frustrated trying to make the dishes that you will throw things around in the kitchen a la Gordon Ramsay. And best of all, they are mostly affordable…but then again, WHAT food is affordable these days??
Good book, it will take some work to figure out what will work for you and your cooking abilities: nothing incredible happens overnight when it comes to A1C levels and fighting a disease like diabetes. It took me 3 years but I went from “just over the line” diabetic to pre-diabetic readings to having an A1C that is considered too low at times (I now have blood sugar that keeps going too low!)
A Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) diet 5 days a week worked for me and it might for you: you might even want to go 7 days a week but I had to have fish or a burger (no bun) in my life as a reward to look forward to every 3-4 days…5 of 7 is better than nothing.
I like that this book comes out in October as many diets (not weight loss, diet as in eating plan) come out in December for the New Year’s Resolution Crowd: this will have you eating healthily before the new year and even on a roll by (American) Thanksgiving and Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa!
#shortbutsweetreviews (ok, not so short but I have opinions as a vegetarian relative of mine is on insulin as she cannot get her AIC below 20 as she lives on bread, pasta and rice as it is “good for her”! I, personally, blame Timmy’s Ice Capps … oh, do you know what that is as that is decidedly a #Canadian thing!)
Quick Summary: An educational guide and an inspired resource
My Review: The Plant-Based Diabetes Cookbook: 125+ Nourishing Recipes to Satisfy Every Taste Bud by Jackie Newgent, RDN, CDN is a wealth of knowledge for the person looking to improve his or her health and wellness status for the better. It is full of helpful content. It provides information on plant-forward recipes, pantry staples, serving portions and modifications, food alternatives, sample menus and more. Additionally, it gave general information on diabetes and pre-diabetes.
My Final Say: What I most appreciated about this cookbook was the variety of clean and green foods presented. From main dishes to treats, no stone was left unturned. I also liked the nutritional information that was provided per item, in addition to the detailed menu ideas.
Other: While this book did include pictures, I wish the author would have considered including more. Pictures add to the visual appeal. Also, I am of the belief that when I can see the simple beauty of a culinary creation, I can actually achieve the same result as the chef who made it.
Rating: 4.5/5
Recommend: Yes
Audience: All foodies and lovers of plant-based delights
Special Remarks: This would be an excellent resource to make available in a diabetic education class or a cooking class geared towards plant-based enthusiasts.
Thank you to the author, to the publisher (HCI Books, Health Communications, Inc.), and to NetGalley, who made this book available for review in exchange for an honest review.
As a registered dietitian myself I love this type of book and the ideas that it provides for me and my clients!
