Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy. This was my first time reading from this author. I really enjoyed the book and the two timelines for past and present. It has been a long time since I’ve read a book where I didn’t know who did it. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
I did enjoy this and it was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon as I had to keep reading to find out what happened. The start was a bit slow but I got dragged in and wow the last quarter was amazing., the ending especially.
This author does deliver.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and bookouture but the review is entirely my own.
Standard thriller fare about dark high school secrets. Grows rather implausible by the end, but overall, a fun read.
a great who did it that jumps then to now so you get to know the characters are they were as kids and as they are now as adults but have any of them changed….
was slow paced in some parts but towards the end i couldn’t put it down. will look for others by this author
I don't know what to say about this book. It was nothing special, to be honest. The first half was slow and nothing happened. The other half was more interesting, but not that much. The whole book was a really slow read for me because I didn’t get attached to the story. Nothing special happens, even the plot twist (which for me was not something to make me wow) wasn’t anything special.
I gave this book three stars, just because it wasn’t good, but it wasn’t bad either.
4.5/5
"Prom Queen" by Laura Wolfe is a gripping psychological thriller that takes you on a rollercoaster ride of suspense and intrigue. With its cleverly woven plot and a cast of complex characters, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
The story revolves around Bailey, a prom queen whose life takes a tragic turn when she is found dead just hours after receiving her crown. Told from the perspective of Bailey's best friend, who is haunted by the events of that night, this tale unravels two decades later as she returns to her hometown to confront her past.
Wolfe's writing is immersive, pulling you into the small lakeside town and its secrets. The author masterfully creates an atmosphere of tension and suspicion, making you question every character's motives. The sense of paranoia and unease is palpable as the protagonist navigates the suspicious glares of former classmates and uncovers disturbing clues.
The plot is filled with unexpected twists and turns, and just when you think you've figured it out, Wolfe throws in a curveball that will leave your jaw on the floor. The pacing is spot-on, keeping you engaged and eager to uncover the truth behind Bailey's death. The author skillfully weaves past and present, gradually revealing the layers of the mystery.
What truly sets "Prom Queen" apart is its characters. Each one is flawed, relatable, and harbors secrets of their own. As you delve deeper into their lives, you'll find yourself empathizing with even the most enigmatic figures. The intricate web of relationships and hidden agendas adds depth to the story, making it a thought-provoking read.
In conclusion, "Prom Queen" by Laura Wolfe is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. It's a tale of secrets, betrayal, and the darkness that can lurk in even the most picturesque of settings. With its compelling narrative and jaw-dropping twists, this book will keep you guessing until the very last page. If you enjoyed novels like "The Woman in the Window," "The Wife Between Us," or anything by Lisa Jewell, you won't want to miss this hauntingly captivating story. Grab a copy, settle in, and prepare for a suspenseful journey into the heart of a chilling mystery.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
This book was great!! It was fast paced, and had enough suspense to keep me reading and reading to figure it out! It bounced between the story of 20 years ago when things happened and the current day story. I was stumped most of the story and didn’t even have a guess of who it was! I was surprised in the end! Very great writing and I loved all the little twists and surprises along the way! I hope there’s another book in the works to continue this story as it left a great cliffhanger to continue it! 10/10 recommend!!
This story sucked me in from the start. We alternate between the past and present to find out who (if anyone) killed Bailey. Brooke has always been blamed for her best friend’s “suicide,” and when a podcaster comes to town hoping to find the truth of Bailey’s death, Brooke is forced to remember what happened 20 years ago.
The twist got me! I like being surprised and this book definitely did that. Kudos, Ms. Wolfe! The last chapter was a game changer.
Thank you to Laura Wolfe, Bookouture, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review. I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
"Prom Queen" was a fast-paced thrilling read. From start to finish my attention was caught and I read the book in one session.
I really enjoy when an author incorporates a True Crime Podcast into their Thrillers, so I had a feeling that this was going to be a good fit for me. I thought that this storyline was well developed and the characters were interesting and it kept me turning pages. The ending which I won't spoil especially was very well done.
Overall I would recommend this anyone who enjoys reading books in the Thriller genre.
Thank you Laura Wolfe, Net Galley and Bookouture for providing me with an ARC of this book.
Bailey returns home after her mother’s passing and runs into a podcaster named Hannah who's investigating the death of her high school best friend, Brooke. After Prom, Brooke's death was ruled a suicide but Hannah thinks someone pushed her. If so, who did it and why?
I really enjoyed the fast pace of PROM QUEEN. I became invested in the podcast and in helping to figure out what really happened to Brooke. There are many unlikeable characters but I enjoyed Bailey's character and learning about her friendship with Brooke. Told in past and present timeline helped keep it flowing nicely. You'll want to add PROM QUEEN to your TBR.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my gifted copy. This review will be shared to my Instagram @coffee.break.book.reviews in the near future.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and Laura Wolfe for the opportunity to read an advance copy of Prom Queen, to be published 9 October 2023. 4/5 Stars for this domestic thriller in which the protagonist attempts to determine who killed her best friend 20 years ago, or if it was actually a suicide as had been reported. There are many characters, all of whom look suspicious at one time or another, throughout the narrative that occurs as Then and Now in alternating chapters. The real kicker is the last paragraph as it reveals the culprit whom you would never guess. Great read! #NetGalley #Bookouture #LauraWolfe #PromQueen
I think this will be loved by the right audience, which I am a bit surprised I am not.
A bit of YA and a bit of mystery, as a podcaster is in town investigating the death of the prom queen 20 years prior. We see past and present POV from Brooke, the prom queen's best friend.
The twist toward the end was certainly a surprise, I didn't see it coming but also it was a bit left of centre. I'd have preferred something I was more invested in.
I think Laura Wolfe did well with the podcast aspect - mixed media is always a win for me.
Now, what really grinded my gears throughout is that on at least three occasions this book says "I could care less". It's couldn't - if you could care less then you do care.
I think this will be a fun read for new thriller readers and people who enjoy YA drama in their thrillers.
Thanks to Bookouture, Netgalley and the author for my eARC in exchange for my honest review
I enjoyed this one quite a lot! There came a point in the story where it felt like the story was slow and stretching, but I loved the twists and the epilogue! That caught me off guard! I liked the dual timeline and the fact that I was never sure who I could trust and just when you think you can trust a character... BAM! you find out you can't! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
An absolutely unputdownable thriller that kept me up all night reading!
With a dual point of view of the past and the present we follow Brooke as she tries to solve the mystery of her friends death in high school.
This book was one that I could really feel. I could feel Brookes betrayal as Bailey ditched her after so many years of friendship. All the high school scenes felt so real and well done! It took me right back to my own high school dramas.
I love that Brooke is a complex character that have her own issues that puts the suspicion on her as well as her high school friends.
But what I loved most about this book is that I didn’t figure out who was guilty before the end, which I normally do.
All my suspicions were false and I was wrong, and it was GREAT! I love an actually hard to figure out twist!
I couldn't put this book down. The end of every chapter was a cliffhanger that I just needed the answers to. My opinion of Brooke changed backwards and forwards throughout the book, one minute I liked her, then I didnt. Then I felt sorry for her, and then I thought she deserved it. Emotional rollercoaster.
My mind changed several times as to who I thought the killer might be, there were so many red herrings and leads, it really could have been anyone.
It was extremely well written and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was exactly how a great thriller should be, interesting, intense, surrounded in suspicion and secrets.
My review will be posted to Instagram and Goodreads 23rd September and followed with Amazon on the 9th
This was a brilliant read that I read within 24 hours. It was extremely gripping with a strong premise - i completely overlooked the killer and loved how everything tied together. A really enthralling thriller, which isn’t too slow or fast placed. It was steady and Laura left a lot of little clues throughout. I had a lot of fun with this one.
I've never been much into thrillers, but when I read this description I knew I HAD to read Prom Queen!!
I was instantly hooked, and found this hard to put down! I never really had a clue where the story was going, and felt like the twists were really well done. I also really enjoyed the podcast part as well, such a cool edition to a thriller book!
Perfect read for spooky season.
A murder mystery that will keep you guessing. The story jumps back and forth in time between the present and 20 years past. There are some great suspects and twists to the story that readers will enjoy. Highly suggested for a clean mystery novel.
Stayed up to finish. Grabbed me from the first sentence and I couldn't put it down. A lot of interesting characters in a small town. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
#Promqueen by Laura Wolfe
Brooke has returned to her hometown after her mom has died and gets swept up in the mystery of her best friend in HS committing suicide on prom night 20 years ago.
Brooke is led to believe that it was murder and so does a podcaster who is in town to investigate.
There were a lot of red herrings, so I would think someone was the murderer and then I would think someone else did the deed.
This book kept me guessing until the end and I was surprised!
Thank you to @netgalley for the advance copy!
