Many thanks to both Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Her Lonely Bones. This book is #6 in the Detective Madison Harper series and the expected publication date is October 5, 2023.
The house is deathly silent. A couple and their young twin boys have been brutally murdered. It's up to Madison to find a cold-blooded killer, not to mention needing to identify the victims, too! No phones have been located, nor a single piece of paper with their names on it. Their car is missing, too.
The storyline kept me on my toes and the pace was incredibly quick. The characters were well-fleshed out and the case was truly baffling. A few of the chapters went back in time 15 years, which made things clearer.
I didn't love this book like I did the previous one. It almost felt as though it had been written for young adults, rather than a more mature audience. So many times I found myself feeling that whatever Madison was saying or asking or thinking sounded and felt too young for a police detective.
I know, I know. I'm totally an outlier here!! The other reviews have been absolutely GLOWING, so take mine with a grain of salt!!
I love this series and even though you can read this book as a standalone, it is better if you read them in order. Madison Harper has a very complicated backstory, as does her friend Nate.
When a couple are discovered murdered, along with their twins, Madison soon realises that this is not a simple case at all. When DNA is taken, the results surprise everyone.
There are many people in Lost Creek who are keeping secrets and Madison will get to the bottom of it, with the help of Nate and his dog, Brody.
Having a dog in the book really endears me to the series, it has to be said. Brody is great and Nate is pretty good also ;)
The book is well crafted, as all of this author's books are, and the surprises keep on coming at a steady rate, although I had guessed some of them. It didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story, however.
4.5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
Her Lonely Bones is the 6th book in the Madison Harper series. I have enjoyed them all and this one is no exception.
I love how this series just keeps getting better and better.
The current case is a family who is murdered just after moving to a new home. I loved the tension throughout the book. The fact that there was a family member not found with the rest of the family kept me glued to the book wanting to know more.
The progression of her personal relationships throughout the series is satisfying. I could feel her angst of Owen going off to college. Given their history that is completely understandable.
Looking for fast paced and intriguing reads? Start this series today!
Please write faster Wendy. I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the arc.
Detective Madison Harper is investigating a brutal family murder - both parents and their twin boys. They were new and town, and no one knows them at all. When she discovers a small t-shirt in the house that indicates the family also had a little girl, she feels the clock ticking as she does everything to solve the murders and find the little girl.
I love the flashbacks in this story. At first, it's a bit confusing, but as the puzzle pieces start to come together, it begins to make sense. This story is well-written, and there were lots of things I didn't see coming. Quick read. I couldn't put it down!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced digital reader's copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review!
This series is just superb!
Every book that I have read (since the beginning) has been suspenseful, intense and engaging.
Once you pop you can't stop! There is always so many layers to unpick and get your teeth into and this one is no different it draws you in and spits you out in a good way!
Wow what a wild ride! I loved this one. Super fast paced it runs at breakneck speed. More twists and turns than a rollercoaster. Wonderful characters that feel like friends. A store that will chill you to the bone. Gruesome and gritty. The writing is superb and you are able to fully immerse in this. This isn’t just a book… it’s an experience. You feel like you are living the story. The detail is amazing. A resounding 5 stars!
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Lonely Bones, the sixth novel to feature small town detective, Madison Harper of the fictional Lost Creek, Colorado Police Department.
A mother, father and two young sons have been murdered in a rundown house on the day they moved in. They have no identification or identifying information so Madison is at a loss as to why, but looking at the house she’s fairly sure it isn’t a home invasion gone wrong - there’s nothing to steal. Then she discovers they also have a young daughter and she’s missing. Once the family is identified it changes the nature of the investigation as they had a big secret.
I thoroughly enjoyed Her Lonely Bones, which is the best so far in the series as it offers a very engrossing plot with plenty of developments, twist upon twist and even a hint of romance. It is told mostly from the investigative point of view, including Madison’s PI friend, Nate Monroe, who is working a cold case with a tangential link to the current murder scene. This is a good approach as it lets the reader guess along with the detectives and fall for all the red herrings the author inserts. I can cheerfully admit to not having a clue, falling for all the misdirection and being gobsmacked by many of the twists/revelations.
The plot is mostly placed in the present with a few chapters going back to events of 15 years ago. I didn’t get their impact at first, but as the revelations keep coming I was astonished at how it all played out. This is no run of the mill police procedural, instead it is a thrilling, meticulously plotted story that will surprise the reader at every turn.
Obviously as the novel is plot driven characterisation takes a back seat. This means that they have little depth and are there to service the plot. I didn’t miss the depth and felt that I had enough information to make the read work. There is an extremely complicated back story to Madison and Nate, and while I can’t judge, having read the previous novels, I think there is enough of a recap for new readers to enjoy the read.
Her Lonely Bones is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
My favourite book in the series so far, it has a gripping storyline and Madison Harper is a great character. I look forward to reading more
You need to start reading this series now!
Her Lonely Bones was an intense, intriguing and definitely could not put down book!
There are so many layers weaved throughout the story! You will be shaking your head and saying WHAT????????
Madison and her team are called to investigate the brutal murder of a family. What they find shocks them. Can they figure out what happened and get closure to this horrendous murder?
I love the growth in Madisons and Nates relationship. I wonder if Madison and her new partner, Detective Adams, is going to be a positive one. One minute he seems to be a good guy and next, he is being weird.
Each Detective Madison Harper book draws me in. Her Lonely Bones deserves more than 5 stars. This story was so intense and brilliantly written. Author Wendy Dranfield has delivered a solid story that I am still thinking about. The twists and turns in the story are ingenious! This is book 6 in the series and each book just gets better and better! I do encourage you to read the books in order. There is so much back story to Madison and Nate you need to know.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and author, Wendy Dranfield, for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
I would like to thank netgalley for providing this advanced copy for the purpose of review.
This is book six in the series and having read them all I knew this would be good. It didn't disappoint and kept me turning the pages. It can be read as a stand-alone but I recommend reading the whole series to understand how the characters got to where they are. I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.
Wow this book was amazing! This is book 6 in the Madison Harper series by Wendy Dranfield. Hang on to your seats cause this was a roller coaster of a ride. I was hooked from the first chapter, there were so many shocking twists , I couldn’t put it down. It is so well written and I love all the interesting characters. I highly recommend you read this series and read it in order. Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley for this arc.
Wow! Wendy surpassed my expectations with the latest installment in the Detective Madison Harper Series!
Note for those who have not read any books in the series, make sure you start from the beginning, they really do need to be read in order.
Book 6 serves up a mystery of a family horrifically slain and a girl is missing, and I was not prepared for the twists, turns and revelations to come out. This book truly had me gripped wondering who was responsible for this horrific crime scene. It is action packed to the end!
As Madison hunts down a killer, she is also dealing with Owen preparing to go off to college and what will be next for here and Nate, I'm not giving anything away here, no spoilers, you will have to read the book to find out if they mend the rift that occurs at the end of the previous book or does he decide it's time to vanish.
Brilliant from start to finish!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
I REALLY enjoy this series! Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy.
This starts out 15 years in the past about a missing child and the mother Tiffany, making a threat to kill herself if her daughter is not returned. Then we are in present day where Madison is called to a house where 3 people have been murdered. During the search she finds another victim. These murders were hard since it was 2 adults and 2 children, but while searching the property Madison discovers that there is a child missing, a little girl. So it begins to try and figure out who murdered these 4 people, who are they and where is the little girl. Sprinkled in we are getting the story from 15 years ago. Madison is also dealing with her son, Owen, leaving for college and how she was going to handle taking him and leaving him there. I was surprised on how Owen handled it and having left a couple kids at college, one out of state and VERY far away, I wasn't cool with what Owen did. I am very pleased with who Madison turned to to help her through it. This was a really good mystery. I liked the old story mixed with the current case. Interesting to see Mike Bowers when he was a patrol cop. I will admit that I did not figure out who the killer was and was surprised. I still am not impressed with Madison's partner Adams. Looking forward to the next book!
Amazing, fabulous book, as all in this series are. Please read them in order for the full background. I love Madison, Nate and Brodi. Madison is dreading her son leaving for College but she is occupied in finding the killer of a family. I wanted to savour this book and read it slowly but that did not happen. Bring on #7. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for an arc of this exceptionally good book. I have read other books by the Author, Wendy Dranfield and with each book I enjoy her writing even more.
Detective Madison and her team are investigating the horrific, brutal murders of two adults and two children in a run down farmhouse. With no identification the task of finding out who they were and hunting the killer seems to be an insurmountable obstacle. With its many twists, possible suspects and interesting characters my attention was held to the surprising conclusion. All a definition of a good book to me.
Her Lonely Bones (Detective Madison Harper Book 6) is an intricate and hands-on police procedural. Staying on top of multiple characters requires close attention to details. Madison is a skilled investigator, but she and her team must dig deep into the past to uncover the truth about an increasingly baffling case. It is filled with twists and turns that kept me engaged until the very end.
I read all of Wendy Dranfield's books and find them highly entertaining. Intriguing plots and vivid characters make each story a page-turner, and I look forward to the next installment. The more I read, the more invested I become in their struggles, and I'm always eager to see what adventures they'll have next. This is book 6 in the Madison Harper series, but it can be read on its own.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for sharing this book with me. I am a huge fan of the Madison Harper series. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling mystery with a strong female protagonist.
Rating 4.25/5
Another amazing book in the Madison Harper series. This one is my favourite. The story is dark and made me quite sad but I couldn’t put it down.
Detective Harper and her team attend a horrible crime scene in a rundown farmhouse. With no clues as to what’s gone on they have their work cut out . I really couldn’t guess the ending.
Thank you to Netgalley and Wendy Dranfield for the opportunity to read and share this book.
Omg i get exciced everytine a new madison harper book comes out i feel i am invested in her and nates story and friendship which grows stronger throughout every book and also all the other characters throught like owen and vance.
This story does not dissapoint its quite sad when the pieces start coming in you cant imagine someone would do something like that which makes it scary because it happens.
its really gripping you have no idea who the killer is and its just full of surprises - can't wait for the next one..
This was my first Madison Harper Book. Even though I haven't read any other books I could follow easily along. Of course it also peaked my interest in reading the previous books because Madison's story is great!
I struggled a little bit with the relationship between Madison and her new Partner - how they talked to each other, really insufferable both of them.
The story itself was intriguing and fast paced and there were a lot of suspects which made it fun to guess.
Thank you Netgalley :)
What a brilliant series this is I just love Madison and Nate together just great well described characters. This book was so well written, I especially enjoyed the flashbacks and what a page turner it is, I was on the edge of my seat throughout so many twists and turns with an amazing ending.
In my opinion you need to read the series from the beginning as there are a lot of mentions as to what has happened previously.
I have nothing negative to say about this book it was just brilliant from the beginning until the very last kindle page.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC which I can thoroughly recommend.
