Listening to Being Henry is the best way to consume this book because Henry Winkler’s story should be heard in his (and his wife’s) adorably funny voice. From his family beginnings in Nazi Germany to his glittering Hollywood career, He tells the painful at times story of how he landed in Hollywood and navigated his way through an incredible career conquering his unique challenges one at a time. Tales of encounters with the Hollywood elite are peppered chaotically throughout this story, making it feel choppy and disorganized. Ultimately this is a charming book that holds some lovely lessons about life within it.
The was a delightful little read with a first hand glimpse into the life of The Fonz! There are moments where his insecurities definitely come through the page, but the over reaching theme is Henry Winkler’s gratitude for what he has accomplished. It’s a distinctly appreciative view of Hollywood. The parts that tripped me up in the story I attribute to the ever moving attention span of Mr Winkler. I think there is so much in his brain that he jumps around a bit. Grateful for the read from NetGalley and the publishers.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of the audio version of the book in exchange for an honest review. Being Henry was mostly read by the author, but a few passages that were especially relevant to his wife were read by her. That was a lovely addition.
I am honestly not familiar with most of Winkler's work post Happy Days, and I was astounded at the depth and breadth of his career.
He was brutally honest about his family relationships and career, but never mean-spirited. His struggles with reading and his later in life diagnosis of dyslexia helped me really feel what it might be like to have that experience more than anything else I have read.
Thank you MacMillan for the audio of Being Henry to go with my complementary the copy from Celadon. I really valued hearing Henry Winkler read his memoir, it made it more engaging for me to listen to him tell his stories. This is a joyfully open celebration of a person with a memorable career, I loved that this felt relatable and honest, filled with feelings of insecurity and uncertainty but the ability to recognize a lot of success and happiness in life. It's a lighter celebrity memoir but that suits the actor and his style and makes for a really nice audiobook to listen to. I think this is a great gift option for the holidays for fans of this author, for anyone who likes a lighter memoir around the holidays.
What a great book. I listened to the audio book and enjoyed hearing him
tell his own story. I learned so much about Henry Winkler and his life, things I had no idea about. The struggles of being typecast as Fonzi, his dyslexia and then his age were all obstacles he was able to overcome. I am anxious to rewatch Happy Days and will look for his other shows on streaming. My only disappointment with his book is that he did not talk about "Better Late Than Never" which I loved!
Thank you Net Galley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
My thanks to Net Galley and Macmillan Audio for this wonderful advanced Audio copy to enjoy.
Like any kid in the 70s I had to tune in every Tuesday night to see The Fonz. I was excited to see Henry Winkler had an autobiography out and was the narrator! He was a joy to listen to and relive the nostalgia. I loved the way he included his wife narrating as well. Highly recommend.
I love Henry's favorite quote: 'Don't put a period on the end of a negative sentence.' I totally enjoyed reading about his life, how he felt about his parents, his upbringing, and his dyslexia diagnosis at age 34. He turned his dyslexia diagnosis into a series of children's books, helping so many other families and children learn to thrive with their own different abilities and limitations. Always being told he's a 'dumb dog' led to many years of therapy which he openly discusses. Henry Winkler and his family seem like the kind of people you would want for your neighbors, so kind and caring, and putting out fires as needed, especially during the teenage years with his children, just like the rest of us. If given a choice, listen to the audiobook, Henry Winkler narrates it himself and he has a great voice.
3 stars.*
Having grown up primarily in the 1980s my childhood was definitely impacted by Happy Days, the 1950s "trend" influence, and, of course, The Fonz.
I have enjoyed seeing cameos and most recently Henry Winkler's performance in Barry, so when I saw he had an audiobook version of his memoir available on NetGalley, I was intrigued to hear him tell his story.
Self-narrated memoirs are amongst my favorite non-fiction books and this one is good. I knew little to nothing about Henry Winkler and this book made me feel like he's a pretty great guy. He seems genuinely grateful for his opportunities and his scandal-free personal life was refreshing.
You won't find any big surprises or Hollywood intrigue in this one but it is sweet and he is truly likeable.
*with thanks to NetGalley for the audio ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
In this memoir, Henry shares his life difficulties from his childhood, the pressure he felt from his life-changing role, and how hard it was for him to move on from this iconic role. Filled with profound heart, charm, and self-deprecating humor, Being Henry is a memoir about so much more than a life in Hollywood and the curse of stardom. It is a meaningful testament to the power of sharing truth and kindness and of finding fulfillment within yourself.
I absolutely adore Hendy Winkler (I have known him for roles post-Fonz), and it was fun to dive into his life. Not only did he write this, but he also narrates the audio book, which I loved.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
So wonderful hearing Henry Winkler read his new book along with thoughts here and therefrom his wife. He takes you on the journey of his career and it’s a fun ride, I love hearing the back story of things that happened and how shows came to be. Even his getting fired fromBig was comical. I had no clue he had directed so many things . If you loved his in Happy Days or in other shows or movies his been in then you will enjoy this book. I smiled and laughed through a lot of the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this early.
I really loved this memoir. It struck the right balance between telling a story of a career and a personal life. There wasn't too much celebrity name-dropping, which always turns me off when reading a memoir. The story was organized well and an easy listen.
Two things stood out to me as I listened to this audiobook. First, I liked that they had Henry's wife Stacy narrating her parts of this book. It gave a great perspective into Henry and Stacy's lives and thoughts. The second thing I noticed is what a huge part dogs play in the Winkler family. I love that this detail was added. It made him more relatable. Great decisions on everybody's part.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for an ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
What an absolutely touching and inspiring story, the life and career of Henry Winkler, as told by himself.
As a young child sitting in the floor in front of my grandparents’ television as they watched reruns of Happy Days, I had my first introduction to Henry Winkler. Not a film since that I have seen him in, did I not say OMG Henry Winkler is in this. He just always felt like such a wholesome person, and that totally rings true from hearing his depiction of life.
Told in such a sincere and humble manner, this book truly touched my heart. He explains his idiosyncratic ways with such a beautiful humor, not shying away from embarrassing moments. I loved learning how he champions for children with learning challenges, taken from his own life experiences.
Henry Winkler is a real honest to goodness treasure and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to listen to him voice this in his charismatic way. This remarkable book is a real gem.
Being Henry just soared to the top of my favorite book of 2023. I can barely contain my emotions regarding how much I love this book; I just want to give Henry Winkler the biggest hug for writing this one!
Henry mentions so many actors and folks in the movie industry. Such fun reading. But more importantly, we see Henry's struggles over the years with anxiety and low self-confidence (it was pounded into him by his parents when dyslexia made it impossible for him to do well in school ... especially since it wasn't diagnosed until he was in his early 30's).
I loved reading about his role on the Mary Tyler Moore set and sleeping on folks couches and hallways.
The very best part of this book is Henry's advice to NEVER finish a negative thought. "when a negative thought comes into your mind, you literally say out loud, "I have no time now." ... Release the negative thought before you put a period on the end of ... " (that sentence) Replace that negative thought with a positive one; not going to spoil it, but I love, love, love what Henry suggests. (Get the book ... or better yet the audio ... to find out for yourself.)
I HIGHLY recommend the audio. It is co-narrated with Henry Winkler by his wife Stacey. They make an awesome team (they have been married for over 46 years.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to request Advance Read Copy books and audiobooks in exchange for honest reviews. Thank you to publishers Macmillan audio and Celadon Books for approving my request to listen/read Being Henry. I really wanted to review this one and requested both versions (separately). The audio was approved first so that was the one reviewed.
I had not realized that Henry Winkler wrote children's and YA books; the Hank Zipzer series, The Ghost Buddy series, Tha Alien Superstar series. Spoiler alert to my young niece and nephew, there will be some books by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver for you this Christmas!
OMG I LOVED this audiobook!! First of all I love Henry Winkler. Every year my husband and I have to watch The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It's one of my favorite Hallmark movies, His character was just so fun and loveable. I have followed him through his career. Yes I grew up watching reruns of Happy Days with my mom so that's how I learned who he was. I loved hearing stories about his career and life that I didn't know. Listening to this audiobook was like listening to him have a conversation with you. I just couldn't stop listening. If you want a great audiobook please listen to this one!!
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to this ARC in advance for my honest opinion.
I always enjoy a celebrity memoir, and that was no different with Henry Winkler’s. His tough relationship with his parents, ups and downs in his career, his struggle with anxiety and dyslexia, I continued to root for him!
Thank you for providing me the opportunity to review the audio book “Being Harry” prior to publication. Henry Winkler narrating his own publication made it all the more special! I am appreciative and leave my sincerity review voluntarily
I was excited to get access to this book as I have been a fan of Henry Winkler for more than 40 years. Listening to the audiobook that is narrated in his own voice was truly a pleasure. His charming and humble personality comes through. He brought to life a character that is the epitome of cool, but he is so much more than that. He is a genuinely nice guy and he has worked very hard over the years to show that he was more than his most recognizable character.
This memoir begins with Henry’s childhood, as he struggled in school due to his dyslexia and failed to meet the expectations of his Jewish parents who immigrated from Germany to escape the Nazis. He honed his acting skills and attended prestigious schools and was trained in theater performing before he ventured to Hollywood.
I loved the chapters pertaining to his time on Happy Days. (I recently visited the “Bronz Fonz” statue on the riverwalk in Milwaukee near where I grew up that commemorates his iconic character, Arthur Fonzarelli).
I was familiar with a few other of his acting credits for television and movies, but it was interesting to learn about his versatility with directing, producing, and doing voices for animated series. I was especially impressed with his ability to co-author numerous children’s novels based on a character like himself as a boy. Henry also shares intimate details about his marriage, parenting his children and the joys of grandchildren, and all their beloved family dogs over the years.
His dedication to his craft was finally rewarded later in his life for his acting on the HBO series Barry. But Henry does not fail to acknowledge all the people in his life along the way (including his therapist) who contributed to his success.
I am a Henry Winkler fan I still enjoy watching whatever he’s in so when I seen this audio I wanted to hear about all the things he did before and after becoming one of the top icons of the 70’s and on America favorite TV show Happy Days.
Happy Days had 7 spin offs that’s how popular it was.
I enjoyed listening to Henry talk about his life behind the scenes and how he had to live after Happy Days and The Fonz became famous he was only 27 at the time. And what a life he has lived and His body of work will live on.
I also liked the added chapter from his wife of 44yrs she tells how she meet Henry and more. This is a great memoir and in his own words which just gave it that extra touch.
If you’re a fan a must listen if you’re not sure watch his work then buy the audio.
Thank You @netgalley
That someone as iconic and utterly unique could despise himself, have crazy self esteem issues and still fan girl over Mick Jagger amazes me. This book was fabulous. What a look inside the mind of a great...and his wife.
The humor and heart was especially impactful as audio and I found it so cute when Stacy performed her parts and Henry performed his.
I'm so glad I chose to listen to this book.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for an ARC of this audiobook.
I have always loved Henry Winkler since his days as "The Fonz" on Happy Days, so I jumped at the chance to request this audiobook when I saw it on NetGalley. Not only do I love memoirs of celebrities, but I love when they narrate it themselves, which Henry Winkler does fantastically. While listening to him tell his story, I felt his honesty and sincerity come through. He tells not only of his successes, but also very honestly of his struggles. It was also great to have his wife narrate some of the parts to tell her side of what it was like to be a celebrity wife. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys memoirs and make sure to listen to the audiobook. When I think back on the book, I hear Henry Winkler's voice in my head telling his story. I know that will stay with me.
