It was great hearing Henry Winkler narrate his story and his wife narrate the sections of the bok she gave her view point.
I felt like I was in the same room as Henry and he was telling me his story.
It was interesting to hear about his childhood. It was also interesting about how he got into acting and how he got the "Fonz" character. It was fun to hear the behind the scenes of the acting world.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan to preview the audio book for an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for my gifted audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
I am a child of the Happy Days generation.....Ehhhh...Arthur Fonzerelli was my first introduction to the bad boy reputation, with the huge heart and humor to go with it. Hearing Henry himself talk about being the Fonz and how it effected every aspect of his life was, at times, heartbreaking. I can't imagine being thought of as anyone other than who I am, while actors go through it daily. He said many times during the recording that he would respond to people who called him Fonz with "my name is Henry". How often we only see the star in front of us and never see the human.
I appreciated Henry's blunt honesty and the fact that it didn't always show him in the best light. Sharing the things that obviously hurt the people he loved most, could not have been easy.
His search for love, recognition, and acceptance is something I believe we can all relate to. In the end of the book he states that we are all the same. When we reach the end of our journey here, we will find that all we wanted the same things.. to be loved, for our children to be happy and healthy, a roof over our head and food in our bellies. And many of us will find that we have all that, in abundance. Thank you, Henry, for reminding of us of what is important in this life.
Yes, some people will always see him as the leather clad boy from Wisconsin, this character opened so many doors for him and he touched so many people. I am glad that he finally accepted his character as The Fonz and the love surrounding him.
While I never rate a memoir, I can tell you this one is worth reading.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for accepting my request to read and audibly review Being Henry: The Fonz . . . and Beyond.
Narrator: Henry Winkler
Stars 2.5.
Winkler narrates which adds to the experience. Voice recognition allowed me to go along with him visually.
"The Fonz" spoke on his life from early childhood to the present, and everything in-between. I found a different person than what I expected. Here was an incredibly hardworking man whose self-confidence lacked. He freely shares memories of his notable characters and positions in entertainment, and drops a few names of friends along the way. In addition, he is dyslexic further fueling his ability to work within his assuredness.
My problem was that for every minute I learned something about him, there were two minutes of reiterated whining. And this really grated on my patience. His wife does narrate parts of the book related to herself. That didn't work for me either.
Another irritant. The importance of family and respect for people with no regard to his profane vocabulary outside of a daytime script.
A physical or electronic book may have provided me with a better experience. For the record, I am not a fan of authors reading their own work; Being Henry is my perfect example.
Henry Winkler is a National Treasure! What a joy to hear Henry, himself, narrate his own story. I highly recommend listening to this memoir today. You won't be disappointed.
If you look up the word “exuberant” in the dictionary, you might find a photo of Henry Winkler. His autobiography, releasing on October 31st, is a charming, funny and self-deprecating story filled to the brim with anecdotes about his decades in Hollywood.
The son of German Jewish immigrants, Henry grew up in Brooklyn and struggled for years with dyslexia, a condition not diagnosed until adulthood. That made it very difficult during auditions for acting jobs but Henry compensated by becoming a master at improvisation.
I was very surprised to learn that despite his massive fame from his iconic role as The Fonz on “Happy Days”, Henry later struggled to find work when the show ended. That role had an indelible impact on both Henry’s personal life and his professional life yet it goes to show just how fleeting fame can be.
If you love inside stories about Hollywood, you’ll devour this book. It is filled with funny and sometimes poignant tales about the life of a working actor. Henry comes across as a truly devoted family man and loyal friend and just an all-round great guy. If you grew up watching “Happy Days” or even love Henry’s work now on “Barry”, you’ll love this book.

Oh my gosh, I'm not surprised that Henry Winkler reading his autobiography would be amazing, it absolutely is! Being Henry: The Fonz...and Beyond is an utter treat!
Literally laugh out loud funny, and endearing, and heartfelt, do yourself a favor and enjoy Being Henry in audio.
Mr. Winkler has a marvelous voice, and is quite a talented narrator. (His voice when he's quoting Ron Howard, had me in stitches, he sounds just like him.)
I've adored Henry Winkler since I was a teen during the Happy Days show. Then as an adult watching him play Barry Zuckercorn in Arrested Development. Though I have to say, my absolute favorite of his performances is as Adam Sandler's father in Click. (I cry every time I watch it.)
A truly stunning autobiography, I can't recommend it enough! Five huge stars to Being Henry: The Fonz...and Beyond.
Even though I only found Happy Days through reruns on TVland growing up, I did indeed fall in love with the show like everyone else. Obviously, I love the character of Fonzi and have enjoyed seeing him pop up in other shows over the years. I had to grab this opportunity to learn about Henry Winkler straight from the source, also there is nothing quite like the author reading the audio version to bring it to life.
Winkler does a great job of telling his story, not shying away from difficult feelings or experiences. He is surprisingly reflective and introspective throughout; and it is so refreshing! I loved it and would recommend.
I grew up watching Happy Days. I enjoyed all the characters so when I saw this book was being released I had to read it. I was very interesting to read and learn more about Henry. I appreciate the advanced copy.
As a Gen X woman who loved Happy Days in her childhood. I really enjoyed learning more about the actor behind the Fonz. It's hard to explain how big Fonzie was back in the day, but this book definitely describes the phenomenon. Henry Winkler's family's history, Jewish heritage, and the baggage he carried from his upbringing were very interesting and touching. Beyond the Happy Days parts, my favorite passages were about his love affair with his wife. In the audiobook, she even comes on and reads some of the text herself. So you get a little of her perspective about it all. It was also very interesting to learn about how Henry Winkler kept himself working and relevant in Hollywood even as he aged out of certain roles and opportunities. The audio recording is very well done, and definitely the way to go, in my opinion.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the complimentary audiobook in exchange for my honest feedback.
This is an authentic, warm, and honest book that shows the man behind the actor. Being Henry conveys an enjoyable man with his own idiosyncracies but one you'd treasure as a friend or just to have a beer or 3 and enjoy a few laughs. An easy read with insights into Henry and the entertainment industry. He pulls no punches, throws a few but shares his gratitude for what his life has become.
Henry Winkler, the Fonz, as he is most recognized as, shares his life as he sees it. Winkler often mentions his parents, Jewish immigrants, who fled Berlin during WWII. Winkler had a tumultuous relationship with his parents, much of he equated to his dyslexia. Not having a name for why he couldn't read or understand mathematical equations, Winkler especially struggled memorizing scripts during his career until his stepson was diagnosed with dyslexia decades later. The most introspective parts of his memoir come when Winkler examined his relationship with his parents and wife. His wife speaks from her own point of view on several occasions, and I truly enjoyed her insight into her husband's mindset and how she handled being married to him.
I felt like I was at a party with Winkler, and he wanted to make sure I knew everything. I decided that this audiobook would best be listened to in smaller increments. Though I found his life interesting, I felt Winkler was asking himself many questions about his experiences without a lot of answers.
Henry Winkler's memoir was nostalgic and brought many memories of staying up late to watch Happy Day's reruns. I would recommend for Winkler fans.
BEING HENRY
Henry Winkler, author and narrator
Memoir
Release date: October 31, 2023
With this book you get a unique look into the mind of Henry Winkler. From his days as being typecast as the Fonz to current day, he tells you the story of his life.
I really didn’t realize a lot about Henry Winkler before reading this book. His down-to-earth charm and wit really comes through on these pages. I would definitely give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
I loved learning about Henry Winkler. He's such a humble, self-deprecating man and it's fascinating to hear what he went through after Happy Days was canceled. All the doubt and anxiety he felt, you never would've guessed. I love that he's the narrator and when his wife, Stacy, narrated her part, that was extra special. Highly recommend!
Being Henry was a wonderful insight into Henry Winkler's life! He is an amazing story teller! I was so glad to listen to the audiobook and hear him tell his stories personally. It was like sitting down with a good friend and having them share their life story with you over a several cups of coffee! He has done so much and overcome so many obstacles in his life. What a great man and actor! Can't recommend this audiobook enough!
Enjoyed listening to this audiobook. I felt like I was on the same adventure as the reader(Henry Winkler). Learned a lot about Henry Winkler from his early beginnings through today. Loved the wit and funny stories shared. Would recommend this to everyone.

Review: Henry Winkler’s childhood led to internalized struggles for years–he had a complicated relationship with his parents who survived the Holocaust, he has dyslexia (though he didn’t know there was a name for it until he was in his 30s), and he has a dream to be an actor. When he landed the role of “The Fonz”, he achieved that dream–but then that leaves him to be typecast and struggle to find meaningful work in the future. This is a good celebrity memoir–lots of nostalgic moments, lots of fun tidbits and truths shared about other celebrities, and some life-introspection, though not particularly deep. I’m always a fan of someone reading their own biography and I especially appreciated that Henry’s wife joins him for certain parts to share her own perspective. I have to say I was personally disappointed, though, that he never talks about filming “Better Late Than Never”--a show I really enjoyed (it is a travel series after all) and really the show I know him most from (I was a little young for Happy Days).
I love taking a deep dive into famous people in and from Hollywood and I love when they narrate their own stories. Being Henry, written and read by Henry Winkler himself was no different. I enjoyed learning more about Henry, his parents, his childhood, and his acting career.
I did find that I had to speed up the reading and it was a little difficult to find the perfect speed, but that didn't hinder the overall performance or quality of the book.
Loved this book so much ,
First off Henry did a wonderful job narrating it and it felt like you were just sitting with him as he told you stories from his life. I enjoyed the small appearances his wife makes in the audiobook also.
Many did not know that Henry winkler struggled with dyslexia and he was very candid in this book to share how that affected his version of himself and how he overcame learning scripts and managing his career. I love how he and his wife have given back helping children over the years. I hear Henry speak publicly at an event about 8 years ago and he really is an inspiration to navigating and overcoming obstacles in your life.
I had no idea Henry Winkler had written children’s books so now I’m going to look for those.
Overall I really enjoyed this audiobook and learning so much about Henry Winklers insight into his life and accomplishments.
I liked that the author read it and did a great job. The chapters seemed to jump around a lot and was hard to follow what was happening at times.
One of the first shows I remember watching as a kid was "Happy Days" (yes, I'm totally showing my age!) and I didn't think there was anyone cooler than The Fonz. After reading 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗛𝗘𝗡𝗥𝗬, it turns out there's actually no one cooler than Henry Winkler.
This memoir is vulnerable, honest and filled with fun Hollywood dish. I also love that it includes passages from his longtime wife, Stacey, sharing what it's like living with her famous partner. Winkler tells his story in his thoroughly charming way, and his journey to understanding and living with his dyslexia is inspiring. He's done so much good in the world, and his reflections back on his life and legacy are entertaining and insightful.
