Never ever pick up this book if you want a light and easy read. Never ever pick up this book if you want a book that you read on a Friday night and never think about it again.
Also, never ever pick up this book if you want to read something that resembles anything normal.
This is not dark. This is not even pitch black. This is a black hole meets Vantablack dark.
If you are like me and have an inner psychopath who jumps for joy when it gets to read real crazies, this book takes it a step further, and then one more step further and then it feels gone so far away from what your normal book crazies are that it joyfully squeals weeeeee! and runs away into the wilderness. No sense of any normalcy to be seen or heard from ever again.
I dislike happy endings. This one has the saddest, the most heartbreaking happy ending ever. It is happy, yet there is nothing happy about it. Do you like books that grab your heart, and never let it go only to shatter it into a million pieces later? Yeah, this book does it and then feeds those million pieces into a vacuum cleaner and throws the said vacuum cleaner into a woodchipper just to make sure it is all destroyed for good and none of your heart is ever coming back.
Do I want to scream from all the rooftops about this book? Hell yeah/hell no, both at the same time.
Hell yeah, because it most definitely is one of the absolute best books I have read this year.
Hell no, because I can see most people not going for Vantablack black holes with the same joyful weeee! I had. This most definitely is not a book for everyone.
On a side note: I wonder where the author gets facts for writing? Where does she get all the emotions and all the experiences? Those are freakishly authentic. How does one who hasn’t lived through it can write it so life-like? Ok, this is me here hoping the author hasn’t lived through any of it.
Also, I have no idea what I am going to do now and what do I read next. What does one read after having read THIS? I’m afraid I have nothing, absolutely nothing on my TBR that could feel even like a remotely ok read after having read THIS.
Good Half Gone by Tarryn Fisher takes readers on a chilling journey as Iris Walsh, haunted by the memory of her twin sister Piper's abduction, navigates a world of secrets and shadows. The author crafts a suspenseful narrative, compelling Iris to take matters into her own hands by interning at the enigmatic Shoal Island Hospital for the criminally insane. As Iris unravels the mysteries within, the story unfolds with a sinister undercurrent, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Such a compelling and gripping psychological thriller!
I was really excited to receive this book. I always enjoy Tarry Fisher's books. This one was hard to stop reading, I finished it so fast. The setting of the asylum on the island was so creepy and gave off the perfect suspenseful vibes. I loved Gran's character. Iris's obsession with her twin's kidnapping was so well written, felt like you were missing Piper as well and I was so invested to get to the end to see how it all turns out. I was not expecting the crazy twist at the end. Well done !! I highly recommend giving this one a read.
Thank you Netgalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the digital arc in exchange for my honest review.
I wasn’t aware when I requested Good Half Gone I would be receiving the first two chapters. It’s not the complete book. Based upon the two chapters I read I cannot give a complete review. My review is limited to two chapters. Since a rating is required I’m forced to choose the middle of the road. I’m unable to make a solid decision. I need more chapters to gain a better understanding of what is happening.
This was getting so good and then it came to an screeching halt! I didnt realize it was just a sample, waaa waaaa! I was juked, lol! But I cannot wait to read this entire book!
Thank you NetGalley and HTP for this teaser!
Fisher has been a hit-or-miss author for me but i always end up checking out her books hoping for another hit - this one lies somewhere in the middle.
it starts off following Iris, whose twin Piper went missing a decade ago, and she has been trying to get justice for her ever since. The book really started to take off for me once Iris takes a job at a facility for criminals (where she suspects Piper’s abductor resides), this provides a really interesting setting and i personally really enjoy books set in hospitals and facilities. however, once we start to reach the last half of the book, things kind of wound down for me as a bit of a romance plot is introduced and some other side plots that really didn’t feel necessary - I kept wanting to go back to the main story of Iris trying to find out what happened to Piper.
I didn't realize going in that this was only the first two chapters so that shocked me just a little bit. I do love this author and so far the writing is on course to make an excellent novel, can't wait to be able to read the rest of this one.
I can't wait to read more of this book. I really like it so far. Tarryn Fisher is one of my favorite authors.
Many thanks to the publisher for letting me read the first few chapters.
I've always adored Tarryn Fisher’s creative dark side, even when she was writing dark romance novels. Lately, she has chosen a path to work on twisty thrillers, some of which I truly enjoyed, such as “The Wives” and “Honest Lie”. Unfortunately, “The Wrong Family” was a miss for me.
My expectations were so high before starting this novel, and I prayed to the thriller angels that it would be a hit. Thankfully, my prayers were answered. Especially the last twist made me scream “no freaking way”—it was an amazing touch! Well done, Fisher! This is a gripping psychological thriller with shades of Shutter Island, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Sound of Freedom. It hooks you from the first page and keeps you on your toes till the end. You barely breathe, questioning so many puzzle pieces, including where is Piper, what really happened to her, and how Shoal Island Hospital is the final piece of the puzzle. What is the thin veil between reality and madness?
Enter Iris Walsh, in her early twenties, raising her 8-year-old son Calvin with the help of her eccentric and lovable grandmother—a former stripper, librarian, caretaker, mother of a drug addict, and guardian of twins.
Iris cannot get through the day when she was fifteen, witnessing her twin sister Piper’s kidnapping in front of a movie theater. The officers didn’t want to believe her, thinking her sister had run away, but she never gave up on her. Nearly a decade later, she graduates from school to be an intern at Shoal Island Hospital because the monster who hurt her sister might be one of the violent patients there. But what if she's wrong? What if she's about to punish an innocent guy, or worse, put her life in danger to become the next prey of a very brutal man?
She finds herself developing a crush on Dr. Leo Grayson, who acts extra helpful and flirty around her. This might solve the problem of reaching the secluded unit where the monster gets treatment, but what if mixing her vendetta with her blooming romance puts more lives at risk? Could she finish the job she's planned for so long and bring justice for her sister by finding out what happened to her?
This is one of my fastest, extra riveting, and exciting reads that I devoured in one sitting. So much happens in a short time that I had a hard time absorbing each thrown curveball, but it was still a well-executed winner that I truly enjoyed.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing/ Graydon House for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.
I've been anxiously waiting for this book! Tarryn is a must read author of mine. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
This is only the first two chapters but I am already hooked!! Tarryn Fisher never disappoints and I cannot wait for March to get my hands on the full book!
This "preview" that I got of the first 2 chapters completely gripped me! I HAVE to read more to find out what happens with the kidnapped sister. I think it was a great introduction to the story where you feel the characters emotions and really want to know what is going to happen.
Tarryn Fisher hardly ever disappoints me and this one was a winner-winner! "Good Half Gone" was a great read.
Just so everyone knows, this is only a two chapter sample of the book. I was so excited when I got approved, now I guess I’ll have to wait until March 😒
The story starts where Iris is on a call with 911. She just witnessed her twin sister’s kidnapping right in front of her eyes. Years later she is traumatized from the events that unfolded that night. To help with her trauma. She also has an addiction to therapy. For years, she has been changing her personal therapist like you change your shampoo. It’s what she does.
Then the story flashes back to the past, then we are left hanging and dying for more. That is all. I definitely look forward to the release of this in March!
Thank you Harlequin Trade Publishing, NetGalley, and Tarryn Fisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Expected Publication March 19th, 2024
Wait!!! What?!? Only two chapters! I need more! I love Tarryn Fisher and I am so excited to get this and finish reading it!
Two chapters is NOT enough. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for release day. I can not wait to read the rest of this story! Tarryn has me hooked & I need more!!!!!!
She’s done it again!! I’ve read the first two chapters of this one and I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest!! I need to know what happens. As usual when I pick up a TF novel I got lost immediately in her words. The characters jump off the pages for me and I feel like I’m inside their heads experiencing what they are. I can list on one hand the authors whose writing makes me feel this way and she is one of them!! I can’t wait!!
I have been a Tarryn Fisher fan since the days of Caleb and Olivia. I am so excited for this book. What I’ve read so far leads me to believe this one will be another great one.
Two chapters aren't enough. And yet, two chapters are just enough to get me hooked and desperate to read Tarryn Fisher's new book Good Half Gone. There's mystery and suspense leaving readers (me) questioning Iris and putting us on our own path of investigating and revealing the truth. I cannot wait to read this book in its entirety.
Can’t wait for this. Tarryn never disappoints. This has sucked me in already. Making me anxious for a good, sit down, thriller binge read.
