I'd long forgotten how dreadful my only previous experience of this franchise was, when I downloaded this. And this is actually fine – if you know what you're getting. This is a bonus book, or contract filler, call it what you will, of short addenda to the saga that others have read elsewhere. So we start with a prequel to some dragon slayer, where his father learns the destiny settled on the family he is yet to have, skip to the wordless drama of a baby's rescue from baddies, and so on. You only get five, but two of them are hefty in length and convolutedness – perhaps needed to make up for the really poor "comedy" bit in the middle. So these books aren't for me, but I can see a stalwart fan will want these world-filling exercises. They should still want them to be a lot better, mind...
This was a fun graphic novel to read. Each story had its own cast of characters, and a quest they had to take on. Some of these journeys were more dangerous than others, but the heroes refused to give up. Along the way, we saw some of these characters learn a good lesson or two. Once the last tale comes to a close, it appears these adventures are far from over.
We dove into this series not knowing it was apart of a larger series and I have to admit I've never read Beowulf! We really enjoyed this though and we can't wait to read the rest. The sagas were great and the graphic novel has wonderful graphics. They were so colorful and added so much to the story. There is European history mixed with adventure throughout the stories. We really liked the cast of characters as well.
Kid Beowulf - Songs and Sagas is a collection of stories that slot in nicely between the existing book series. Which was an assumption I took from the synopsis, because I've never read Kid Beowulf before. The style of the artwork caught my eye (rustic/ Asterixish, and children going on adventures is always a plus for me.
The stories range from action packed to character driven with some resonating more with me than others. Each tale, takes us through European history, some with notable figures and events. Thus it's ideal that each story starts with a Saga map highlighting main characters, geography and book timeline which is handy context.
The stories are full of depth, well rounded characters and humour. And just in case you were wondering, my favourite story was Shild and the Dragon, for the pathos and the dragon's personality.

A really engaging graphic novel. There's a lot of good content in need and it will appeal to children, especially those reluctant readers.
This is such a cool concept! I loved reading these additional stories to Beowulf’s take. Students are going to enjoy this concept as well. I can’t wait to share it with them!
This utterly charming installment in the Kid Beowulf series is a great example of how to introduce historical concepts to just about any kid, even those who don't love history. The concept is brilliant—weaving in European epics and ancient history as the settings for fun, adventurous stories—and this volume uses its five stories to explore origin stories and tales that might have occurred before major events in other books. The characters and stories feel complete, though, with introductions always sliding neatly into the tales. A great addition for classrooms and libraries, even for kids who are discovering this series for the first time.
Kid Beowulf - Songs and Sagas is the next book in the Kid Beowulf series. This time, it is filled with short stories that take place in between the main Kid Beowulf books - from the tale of how the Dragon lost his eye to Beowulf and Boudica's friendship and travels, and everything in between. Songs and Sagas covers all the side quests that didn't make it to the main stories.
As with the remainder of the Kid Beowulf books, Songs and Sagas is a colourful graphic novel, drawn on the classic Western style that hearkens back to Asterix and Tintin (rather than the current popular Manga-style illustration). It's witty and clever and full of historical detail.
My kiddo loves the Kid Beowulf , and this one was no exception.
~Many thanks to Alexis Fajardo and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~
This book was so adorable, I loved everything about it, the illustrations were so well done, they suited the book perfectly, the story was amazing as well, even thought is very short I could really connect with the characters. I’m sure the kids are going to be just as enthralled with this amazing book as I was. I will definitely recommend! Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this early copy
Alexis Fajardo has crafted an amazing and creative literary/visual universe with this series. Another delightful entry, this time focused on brief stories instead of a long form narrative — great for fans of the series and a scaffold for new readers.
5 short stories middle schoolers love. Kid Beowulf continues to pack its saga with adventure. Readers will slay this graphic novel with its fast-paced, action-filled hazardous tale. Graphics flow and lead readers through the story with ease. The colors are vibrant and enjoyable to view. Some gore, some violence, but Middle Grade worthy!
