I have a confession: I’ve always wanted to run my own Bed & Breakfast. It’s been a little fantasy of mine for years, so this mystery already had me at go.
It’s the opening weekend of Jess’s new B&B, The Pearl, in Hudson Valley. She, with her family and friends, have been working for a while to revamp her grandmother’s estate into a beautiful and social media worthy vacation spot. Everything is going well; the rosé is flowing, the guests are happy, special musical guest has arrived. Jess’s dream is coming true, until the next morning a dead body is found. Now, Jess has to corral the guests, find a killer, and make sure she doesn’t run out of rosé!
Can I stay at The Pearl please? This is my kind of relaxation location, minus the dead body. The author describes the location so well I could see it clearly. I like Jess as a main character, though agree with her friends that she sticks up for her ex too much. There are a ton of characters to keep track of, which made me have to concentrate extra hard when reading. However, the mystery was well done, and I didn’t see the killer coming. I would recommend this fun mystery to anyone!
It’s opening weekend for The Pearl B&B, and Jess and her business partner, Kat are all set to make their new business a success. But when a guest ends up murdered, it gives their killer vibe a new meaning!
First off, I really want to stay at The Pearl. I wish it was a real B&B that I could visit because it sounds perfect for me! The setting was perfect for this cozy mystery and was a fun aspect for the book.
Jess was a great character and I enjoyed that she was a true crime fan. It helped her with being an amateur detective and solving the crime at her job. There are a lot of characters in this book and for the most part they were all a suspect at one time or another. It was fun trying to figure out who did it, and I didn’t have a hard time keeping track of who was who at all.
It’s nice to take a break from all the darker thrillers I read and pick up a cozy mystery. The light-hearted humor was a nice change of pace and I loved how realistic and relatable the characters were. I listened to the audiobook and liked Traci Odom as the narrator. She brought Jess and all the guests at The Pearl to life and transported me to the Hudson Valley!
If you’re looking for a humorous mystery that will keep you guessing, then this book is for you. I’m excited for the next book in the series to come out. Thank you to the author and Thriller Book Lovers Promotions for the gifted copies in exchange for my honest review.

Marketed as Schitts Creek meets Only Murders in the Building, Peril in Pink is a cute cozy mystery centered on a small town bed and breakfast where a murder turns opening weekend upside down. While I could appreciate the fun the author was trying to have with the writing here, this wasn't my personal favorite. I kind of cringe out when authors overdo pop culture references. I feel like it makes the book less timeless and feels too forced - so all of the references to "My Favorite Murder" and the podcasters that made the main characters crime junkie felt a little silly and hard to get past in my opinion.
Jess Byrne has been preparing her pink-themed bed and breakfast for opening weekend for months, and after securing a popstar for opening weekend, she feels like she's finally ready for a smash success. But when her main attraction no shows for the event and two bodies are found on property, the guests are less than pleased with their opening experience. Now Jess is torn on helping the police find the murderer, especially because signs point to it being someone close to her. With the help of her best friend Kat, the two girls put on their amateur sleuthing caps to figure out who had a motive, and who committed the crime.
This book is definitely a cute-type mystery, not a sleep-with-the-doors-locked type mystery. I can see it being a good entry-level book for getting into mystery/thriller/true crime-esque stories, but if you're an avid thriller reader like me, you might find this one to be lacking as well. That being said, this was a quick read, so if you're looking for something that is fast paced this might fit the bill for you!
This is the author's debut work, so I think that explains why moments of this felt more wattpad-y to me than I would have wanted, BUT she definitely shows a lot of potential. Move away from the heavy pop culture references, and this one would definitely have scored higher on my rankings.

Thank you so @sydneyleigh @thrillersbookpromotions @crookedlane @dreamscape media and @netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book!
The opening weekend of Jess and her best friend Kats B & B didn’t go quite the way they planned. Finding the dead body of her ex-boyfriend’s step father on the property was unexpected to say the least. Jess is determined to figure out what happened. So many obstacles arise as she tries to uncover the truth.
My thoughts:
This was a cozy small town murder mystery. I loved the whodunnit vibes.
Jess and her amateur sleuthing was very entertaining. I honestly suspected different people but had no true guess of who the murderer could be until it was revealed at the end.
I enjoyed being introduced to The Pearl B&B and the cute small town feels. I’m excited to return with the next in the series.
Quick Take:
This was a really adorable cozy mystery - I enjoyed the characters and the setting of the super cute B&B especially. If you enjoy books like The Agathas or the Finlay Donovan series, I think you will enjoy this one. It didn't blow my mind or do anything super unique in the genre but I enjoyed listening to the audiobook and would absolutely read another book in this series!
This was a cute, cozy mystery. Full transparency I had no idea what the book was about and went in blind. I just liked the title!
Jess runs a B&B in upstate New York called The Pearl. It's opening weekend, and Jess's ex-boyfriend, Lars, is the headliner for a live show. When not one but two murders occur, Jess does some sleuthing to see if Lars is guilty or innocent.
This book gives you the small town, Hallmark feel with likable characters, and a hostess who is also a true crime fan.
What a fun and cute cozy mystery! Not my normal genre but I gave it a whirl and I'm really glad I did. The cover is what really gave me in because I love pink and the little spot of blood sent chills up my spine. I went in blind and I think you should to because it makes this read much more enjoyable. It was a clever, witty, a little sweet, a little sour, with lots of pizzazz. You'll start it and will want to read until you finish it. Cute and quirky read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my e-ARC of Peril in Pink!
Unfortunately this one wasn’t for me, but I hope to check out more from this author in the future!
A new B&B, a great small-town setting, music, and mimosas! What’s not to like?
I enjoyed this fresh, twisty cozy set in the Hudson Valley.
The author did a great job of setting the scene for the B&B with vivid descriptions of the property, including the refurbished VW van.
Jess Byrne makes a good amateur sleuth, and her reluctant partner Kat provides a good sounding board.
There is a large cast of characters and several of them were my pick for the murderer.
I was surprised to learn who the culprit was. I didn't see that coming.
Well done, Sydney Leigh. Looking forward to reading more of this series.
“Here’s a piece of advice, Ms. Byrne. ‘When people show you who they are, believe them.’”
Peril In Pink is a cozy murder mystery that takes place at an Instagram worthy Bed & Breakfast. What the new owners didn’t expect when opening their new establishment were the dead bodies…which is NOT conducive to a relaxing getaway for their clientele.
This is a super quick read with a fun and funny storyline. It is very relevant to the times with a focus on the importance of social media with new businesses and the characters speaking in hashtags. And plenty of rosé. Cheees! If you enjoyed the Finlay Donovan books I think you will enjoy this one too.
Thank you to Netgalley, Crooked Lane Books, and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A great start to a new cozy mystery series. I absolutely love the setting. It may have been responsible for my booking a vacation at a resort with two pools. I would LOVE to stay at The Pearl B&B! Except, I would stay in my room or poolside in a crowd because dead bodies keep popping up. Luckily, Jess and the attractive local detective are on the case. The other relationships Jess has at the B&B are just delightful. Her best friend, brother, and sister-in-law, all add a wonderful element of family and friendship to the story.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.

Peril in Pink by Sydney Leigh is everything I hoped it would be when I first saw the fun cover! This cozy mystery kicks off a new series featuring two BFF’s who have started a new B&B that feels more like a resort – and they’ve catered to the Instagram & TikTok crowd so you know there’s hashtags flying around left and right. Usually that gets old really fast with me, but in this case the author utilized it just the right amount and at the right moments to contribute to the overall vibe of the setting, story, and characters.
Jess & her business partner Kat are hilarious together. It’s easy to tell that they’re best friends, even if the author hadn’t already given us that information. I loved their banter and the kind of camaraderie that comes from knowing each other well. The other characters who will undoubtedly be recurring include Jess’ charming brother Nate and his ‘granola girl’ wife Sarah, their powerhouse mother, and their quirky, hippie Aunt Marnie. Oh and a swoony detective who is clearly attracted to Jess and has delicious romantic potential for the future. Each of these helped establish the overall tone of the series, as well as adding layers to this first story.
Poor Jess, though. Her opening weekend is not going the way she hoped. Instead of basking in happy guests and social media tags, she’s dodging a rising body count and trying to save her rock star ex-boyfriend from a murder rap. She’s got a B&B full of suspects, and the mystery’s layers only deepen the more she investigates. I enjoyed tagging along as she sleuthed and, while I had some inklings of whodunit, I was an equal opportunity suspecter of many characters and ended up surprised by several elements of the end result. (Yes, I can create new words like ‘suspecter’ if I want to lol)
Bottom Line: Peril in Pink by Sydney Leigh is fun and snappy and full of heart. The posh B&B setting brings some California vibes to New York, and it attracts a bevy of eccentric characters who make great suspects in the well-plotted mystery. The author’s writing voice sparkles with wit and talent, instantly drawing readers in and keeping them charmed by the smart dialogue and engaging narrative. I loved the characters, especially Jess & Kat (and hunky detective James) and I look forward to reading more books in this series.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Nothing I love more than a cozy mystery series debut. 💕
Peril in Pink embraces the cozy mystery vibes and leans into them with best friends opening a B&B with a pink Palm Springs aesthetic & Insta-worthy vibes for their millennial visitors.
When someone is murdered during their grand opening all hell breaks lose and it’s up to them and a hot detective to solve the mystery.
This is going to be a fun series and I can’t wait to read more!
Special thanks to @crookedlanebooks @dreamscape_media for the ARC/ALC.
I am always down for a cozy mystery! Sometimes you just need a little mystery in your life.
This book is told from the point-of-view of Jess Byrne. She went into business with her friend, brother, and his wife when it came to creating a B&B that was owned by her grandmother. The mystery starts off pretty quickly with people coming in for the opening and some being more creepy/suspicious than others.
I had a feeling who would be the victim. The suspect wasn’t too obvious, but there were some details here and there that led me to my reasoning. The mystery was pretty good overall though.
The one thing I wish there was more of was character development. I feel like the relationships between characters were rather bland and I feel like if there was more development it would have made the book better because I could have connected to the characters as well because they felt a bit flat.
Overall, this was good but just needed a bit more.
A digital copy of this book was provided to me by Thriller Book Lovers Promotions. The opinions are my own and freely given.
Jess and her best friend Kat open a B&B, The Pearl, in Hudson Valley. The Pearl was her grandmother's home and when she died, Kat and Jess bought it to make it into the beautiful place it is today. It is done up in pink, and a wonderful girls weekend away. The photos on Instagram make everyone want to visit. But the morning after opening night, Jess's sister-in-law stumbles across a body. He is a very disliked person in the town, swindling people out of their hard-earned money, so the suspect list is long. I really liked the characters. Jess and Kat try to investigate the murder themselves, due to all the true-crime podcasts Jess has listened to. But every time a thought comes into her head, Jess gets distracted by something else, the reporters, the B&B guests, the actual business side of it all. Lars is the high school boyfriend that went on a singing tv reality show and made it big. He agrees to perform at the grand opening, so plenty of people flock to the B&B. The only problem is his "manager" is his stepdad, the same man that was stealing money from the townsfolk. The police look heavily at Lars. The detective also has a history with Lars, so is he right in his investigation, or is he biased? This was a very nice comfy read that still had me guessing who murdered Bob. For a girl that reads mainly thriller type books, I did not get bored with this story. It kept me engaged.
A cute cozy mystery. A bed and breakfast on opening weekend with a murder. Especially a guy who is extremely unliked in his own hometown with lots of suspects. Who did it and was able to almost get away with it?
A small side of romance to add to it.
This was a nice book to read to break up my regular thrillers. It was fast paced and I love a good cozy mystery.
On grand opening weekend of their bed-and-breakfast, True crime podcast lovers and Instagram worthy B&B owners, Jess and Kat are working hard to create the perfect weekend for their guests. The weekend quickly takes a turn when one of the guest is found dead in the pond. As the investigation doesn’t seem to be closing quickly enough, they decide to start their own side investigation in an attempt move the case forward and clear up any bad reputation their business might get from this death. The main suspect? Jess’s ex-boyfriend and town celebrity, Lars, who also happens to be the victim’s step-son. Not only does Jess have to help Lars clear his name, she quickly finds her family members, who also work at the B&B, to be acting quite suspicious.
This was a fun and quick murder mystery novel with some entertaining characters and interactions. I could totally picture this one as a movie or tv show. There’s definitely some Schitts Creek and Only Murders in the Building vibes as the synopsis mentions with the novels setting taking place at this new B&B and the weaving of the MCs love for true crime podcasts! I loved the friends and family dynamic as it added a complicated layer to the already mysterious death. The various guests and their chiming in was also great
This book was an adorable cozy murder mystery. It takes place at a recently renovated B&B, starting on opening night. There is a huge line up of characters and so many people with motives. I really couldn't figure out the culprits until it was revealed at the end. Then it all makes sense. I loved the setting, both the small town and the actual B&B, plus surrounding areas. I love the family relationships, especially between owner Jess, her brother Nate and her SIL Sarah. My only complaints are 1) there is a hint of romance from the beginning of the book but then nothing happens until the very last paragraph. I was disappointed in that, and was always hoping more would be revealed but it wasn't. 2) There is a large amount of characters and I had a very hard time keeping them straight for the first half of the book. By the second half I had them figured out.
It was cute, but it wasn't anything that I felt kept me invested. I'm not the biggest cozy mystery person and when I do enjoy them, I like them to feel like Veronica Speedwell or Finlay Donovan. This felt too cute.
I am so thankful to netgalley for this arc. But this was terrible. The writing is bad. The characters are insufferable. The plot doesn't make sense. I have to DNF. I cannot read anymore.
