Although I enjoyed this book and stuck it out to the end, I think it would benefit from some more editing, as the language was at times distractingly repetitive.

The story itself is quite entertaining. Group of Scots get stranded in a small valley due to flooding. Someone is murdered and the rest of the group must try to survive the night and hopefully identify the killer.

The Flood was a captivating novel that had great character. I found myself speeding through this book and enjoying every minute of it.

This was the first book I've read (listened via audiobook) by this author. The narration was good, but the story was a little slow paced for me, but was a good occupation on the long commute home. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC

Police Scotland has advised PC Fiona MacLeish that she needs to take a break from the pressures of a busy force since the terrible murder of her parents is still haunting her. She has since returned to the Borders, where she spent her formative years in a lonely childhood home with her aunt. a location where no one even knows she works for the cops. She finds the exact location she has gone to, to find calm may be much more deadly than she could have ever imagined when a horrific storm cuts off the little agricultural village and the bloodied body of one of her aunt's neighbors is discovered. The idea was intriguing, but some of the book's passages felt overly descriptive and unrelated to the plot. The idea was intriguing, but some of the book's passages felt overly descriptive and unrelated to the plot (i.e., locations or buildings, which always pulls me out of the story). I liked how the author used the weather to threaten the characters and used it as a sort of "character." The killer was well-developed, with a motive that was both obvious and not overly complicated. The primary character was enjoyable. This novel is one I would suggest, and I plan to read more from this author.

The premise of this book was very interesting, but the book was slightly repetitive. Maybe it was because it was told from Fiona’s perspective, but there was so much detail of her thoughts throughout the book. The wiring was very descriptive, which I appreciated, but I felt we were in Fiona’s “head” too much. It also ended in an abrupt manner. Overall it was a good read. This is my first book by this author, and I will definitely read something else by this author.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is pure intensity from the moment I started until the end. It’s a little bit of a locked room type mystery as a storm and flood trap the characters and when they start dying, there is a limited amount of suspects. No one knows that Fiona is a police officer as she is trapped with the others and so she starts to investigate without any backup.

This is a great setup for the Fiona MacLeish series. She is a likable character and determined to find justice. I wish she showed us a little more than slowing down the pace to tell us everything she was thinking as she works out the evidence, but other than that, a very enjoyable first book in this new series.

I switched back and forth between reading and listening to this one and I enjoyed Helen McAlpine’s narration and accent.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC digital copy. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions are my own.

This audiobook was narrated beautifully. I truly enjoyed the narrator’s talent with differing voices.

The mystery was slightly confusing at first, but I quickly became entertained by the cast of characters. The storm ultimately became a character in its own right.

4 out of 5 stars and my respect to the author.. A full 5 stars to the narrator!

'The Flood' is an audiobook set in the rural Scottish Borders. In a small community, PC Fiona is visiting her aunt, the woman who brought her up from age 15 following the tragic murder of Fiona's parents. The visit coincides with a devastating flood, an event that brings the few villagers together. Unfortunately when checking in on elderly neighbours Fiona finds a corpse, on closer inspection Fiona is in no doubt that the neighbour has been murdered. With all routes out of the village blocked by the flood Fiona is in no doubt that the murderer is in close proximity. All local inhabitants seek solace in a farmhouse, the only residence that has escaped the flood, unbeknown to all but Fiona, a murderer is in their midst.

As this tale unfolds Fiona finds herself in a murder mystery where she analyses the behaviour of the group for signs of who has motive for murder!

This audiobook is superbly well narrated, this narrator is talented and very pleasant to listen to, I am utterly in awe of how creepy she makes one of the characters sound!!

I felt this story to start fairly slowly, but the pace is ramped up considerably before the big reveal! Overall a very enjoyable and listenable audiobook.

My thanks to netGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.

Nice whodunnit plot based in Scotland during a major storm. Fiona MacLeish discovers the body of one of her aunt’s neighbours while battling flooding during an intense storm. It’s clear that they have been murdered and so Fiona must now figure out who the murderer is before time runs out.

I enjoyed listening to this as it was pretty fast paced especially when describing increasing dangers from both the storm and the murderer. The narrator really brought the story to life and kept me intrigued until the end. I’m looking forward to reading the next instalment.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an audio ARC of this in reply for a honest review.

Unfotunately this was a DNF for me. I just could not get on with the narrator, way too Scottish for me! So sorry i know this is a preference! But will get on kindle on its release as story looks great

My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for my audio copy of The Flood. This story is technically quite complex in it's description of the flooding and the means the characters used to extricate themselves from very difficult situations so a lot of research was obviously done and this helps the reader feel more involved in the subsidiary plot of dealing with the conditions thrown up by the flood,
Although the action started very early I found this book to be a bit of a slow burner and I didn't really feel truly invested until about two hours in.. Some of the delay was the repeated labouring of the details surrounding the murders of Fiona's parents by an unknown person and how this had led her to become a poilice officer.
Personally I was aggrieved by the ageism afforded Aunt Mary and Elsie, they were both only in their early sixties and yet they were continuously referred to as elderly ladies or the old women, come on, they weren't even pensioners!
The characters were all carefully delineated with a lot of background and quite relateable so overall a good story and I will be looking out for the sequel. I think I will choose to read it myself rather than listen to the audio version though as while, overall, the narrator did an excellent job I prefer my books to be read as I would read them and not have the characters given their own voices as I find women do not do a good job of mens' voices and vice versa too and I found at least two of the male 'voices' set my teeth on edge.

I was unable to listen this. It’s showing via netgalley but hasn’t given me the option to download.
Luckily I have the ebook copy of this which I’ve just finished and I will review via that copy.
A great read and a superb start to what looks to be a promising series.

Tense and twisty. Every chapter increases the tension until I just had to keep listening to the end. Fantastic audio book.

A raging storm in the Scottish countryside is it more deadly than the residents of the valley who are trapped?

Fiona is a police officer on leave visiting her aunt Mary when a raging storm puts everyone in danger. But, while trying to evacuate Fiona stumbles upon a dead neighbor. Now everyone must try to survive the night while Fiona tries to determine who is responsible for the bodies accumulating

Characters are well developed in this locked room mystery. Suspense builds with each chapter as the reader tries their luck at detecting the motivations of the killer as well as their identity. Fiona is a smart strong strategic female protagonist. There is a bit of repetition that tamps down some of the suspense. As this is the first in a series, I look forward to learning more about Fiona and her family mystery.

Intriguing and fast paced with lots of suspects. I enjoyed the layout and suspense I was given with the character development. Narration is done well. It kept me interest in wanting to know who’s behind the murder of Fiona’s parents. I hope the next book will spell it out!
Thank you, G.N. Smith, Bookouture, & Netgalley for my copy. All opinions are my own.

This was a very descriptive narrative and I could really picture every character and every scene. The story is set in a remote, secluded area which makes the landscape become familiar and easy to imagine. I did get a bit confused between a few of the characters but the narrators regional accents helped keep them separate.

The story was interesting but fairly drawn out with the description as mentioned above. I did speed up the narration to get through the story a bit quicker as I wanted to get to the action rather than the to and fro dialogue between the characters.

I did enjoy the story and the narration and will look for more from this author.

With thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the chance to listen to and review this audiobook.

I really enjoyed this. I was initially sceptical about a novel set in one place where characters are trapped but the author absolutely uses it to its full. I’m looking forward to the next one

I was hooked from the beginning of this thrilling book. It had everything from suspect, thriller, full of action and was gripping too.Good characters. Police officer Fiona MacLeish with Scotland was on taking a break from work but found herself solving the crime which was full of twists. Totally unputdownable crime novel

Thank you Netgalley

I finished listening 🎧 to this book 📕 a few days ago. I loved listening to this one it had me hooked from the very start. This book is fast paced and that makes it so easy to fly through it and forget you’re actually reading.📖 The narrator did an absolutely fantastic job, I loved listening to the Scottish accent! I will definitely be getting my hands on the second book, which is also out today, so I can read it soon. I gave this book 4.75⭐️‘s.
